Why do affirmations work?

The reason is simpler than you think.

But before that, let me confess.

I also thought (for a long time) affirmations are nonsense.

And it deserves that reputation thanks to some bad books with good marketing — like “The Secret.”

So I was also skeptical for a long time until Scott Adams convinced me to try it on Tim Ferriss’ podcast.

If you are new to affirmations, it’s simple.

You take a goal you want to achieve, and you write it (by hand) every day 10-15 times in a self-affirming way.

An example: “I’ll have 10,000 newsletter subscribers by the end of 2022.”

Sounds good, but it makes you wonder.

How can writing your goal every day help you achieve it?

The answer is not “the universe” as the law of attraction gurus suggest.

But it’s how our minds work.

Here’s why affirmations actually work:

1. Focus

You have hundreds of distractions every day.

And I’m not just talking about the obvious ones like social media and Netflix.

They are easier to avoid, once you decide to do so.

The real danger is with the tasks that make you feel productive but don’t take you closer to your goal.

And you find yourself proactively procrastinating for weeks without knowing.

Writing down your goal 15 times reminds you of the one thing you have to achieve.

So you can avoid distractions and work on the tasks that matter.

2- Get Lucky

Let’s say you have a long conversation with your friend about Tesla.

The next day, you start seeing Tesla cars everywhere.

It’s not that suddenly there are more Teslas around you; you just start paying attention thanks to selective memory.

It works the same way with affirmations.

When you keep one specific goal in mind, you start noticing opportunities you didn’t see before.

And you improve your chances to get lucky by increasing your luck surface area.

3- Commitment

Writing the same thing 15 times every day is a commitment.

It’s easy for a few days but gets harder after a week.

And even harder after a month.

But it’s the same as working toward a long-term goal.

It makes you think: “If I don’t even show a small effort to write it down, can I achieve it?

So by writing it every day for months, you prove to yourself that you are still committed.

4- Self-belief

Pessimism keeps you alive, but optimism makes you grow.

And affirmations fuel your optimism.

You focus on possibilities, rather than obstacles.

Hence you find the courage to take bold actions.

After all, is it even possible to achieve anything if you don’t believe it?
