The “Wicked: For Good” star is nominated for best actress in Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards.
WASHINGTON — Cynthia Erivo is nominated for a Golden Globe for best actress, but she won’t be at Sunday’s ceremony.
The “Wicked: For Good” actress will miss Sunday’s ceremony as she is “deep in production” for the West End production of Dracula, Variety reported Tuesday. Erivo could take home the award for best actress in a musical or comedy during the 83rd Golden Globe Awards.
She was previously nominated in the same category the year prior for the first part of “Wicked.” With this year’s nomination, Erivo became the first Black woman to be nominated twice in the best actress category.
“I hope there are many more to come, not just for me, but for other Black women. I hope it’s just the beginning,” she told Variety at the time. “What a wonderful thing to do that and be a part of changing history a little bit and hopefully open up doors for someone else too.”
Erivo is nominated alongside Rose Byrne, Kate Hudson, Chase Infiniti, Amanda Seyfried and Emma Stone.
According to Variety, the upcoming “Dracula” production is a one-woman stage adaptation of the classic story with Erivo set to play 23 characters, including the iconic vampire. The production will run in London’s West End from Feb. 4 to May 31, the outlet said.
“I haven’t been back to stage for such a long time. Since 2015’s ‘The Color Purple.’ The first time I really did anything that felt like a stage was ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, and that was only three nights. So this is probably the first time I’m going back to a theatre, on stage to do a lengthy run of sorts,” Erivo said in an interview with Wonderland Magazine in December. “I’m very scared. But I’m also like — I don’t know, is this sadistic of me — but I’m really excited about it as well. It’s absolutely nonsensical and insane, and I kept trying to resist it for the longest time.”
When are the Golden Globes?
The 83rd Golden Globe Awards ceremony begins at 8 p.m. EST at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, and will be televised live on CBS and streamed live on Paramount+.
