Wayward’s Mae Martin Revealed the ‘Frustrating’ Part of Discussing Their Identity in Resurfaced Interview: ‘I Just Feel…’

Mae Martin had lots of fun in their role in Wayward. The comedian plays a trans cop Alex Dempsey, who moves to the peculiar community of Tall Pines with his wife Laura where they unravel secrets with  teens Leile (Alyvia Alyn Lind) and Abbie (Sydney Topliffe).

“Alex is a character who’s desperate for acceptance, and he finds this what seems like a liberal utopia, the way a lot of those cults in the ’70s did seem to promise all of the right things,” Martin told Deadline about their role. “And he’s definitely someone who’s seduced by and yearning for that kind of heteronormative hypermasculinity and a nuclear family. So, it was juicy to explore that.”

What is Mae Martin’s gender?

Mae Martin identifies as non-binary. They came out in 2021 in an Instagram post. “The way I feel about my gender identity is ongoing and evolving, and it’s personal,” they wrote in the caption. “but I thought it might be good to say for clarity and in case anyone finds it helpful.

“I’m nonbinary, my pronouns are they/them and she/her (I love it when people say ‘they’ but I don’t mind ‘she’ at ALL),” the continued.

The Canadian-born actor got top surgery in late 2021, telling British GQ: “I feel more relaxed about photoshoots as I feel more connected to myself.”

“It’s so frustrating that so much of identity is about comparison,” Martin told the outlet. “I just feel like myself. I don’t even feel nonbinary. I just wake up, have a coffee and go to work.”

On their own personal experiences, they lightly touch upon it in the last moments of their Netflix stand-up special Sap. “I don’t really want to talk about gender, because it’s lose-lose,” they say. “You just have to take my word for it that I know who I am,” they said, and added that they are taking low-dose testosterone. “This has been the best of my life,” they add, defining “best” as “the absence of agony. It’s a low bar. Who are we to deny anybody that?”

The comedian has been a long advocate in educating people debunking the social norms of gender binaries with documentaries like Fluid: Life Beyond the Binary and even in their own Netflix show Feel Good. When writing the romantic dramedy, they recounted that they had lots of self-discovery in the process. “I was sort of going through those realizations in real time as I made the show,” they told Canada’s POV. “When we wrote season one, it was really about a queer person dating a closeted person, and that struggle. There were hints of gendered dysphoria I was experiencing, but then season two really made me look at myself and where I wanted to go, so by the end, to have that character come out and identify as non-binary felt authentic because I was really going through that.”

What is Mae Martin’s sexuality?

Mae Martin identifies as bisexual. They came out in 2021, and was in a relationship with Survivor winner Parvati Shallow from 2024 to 2025.
