RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Another local tribute for conservative activist Charlie Kirk was held in the Triangle on Sunday, this one organized by the Wake County Republican Party.
Hundreds of people attended the memorial service held outside Wake GOP headquarters in Raleigh.
“He’s an amazing man. Stood for great principles, and I’m here to do the same,” said Vicki Harry, who drove from Willow Spring for the event.
The event included prayer, hymns, tributes from organizers with Wake County GOP, and remarks from state officials Luke Farley and Dave Boliek.
“In my opinion, it’s a turning point for all of us as North Carolinians and Americans to commit to ending political violence and to endeavor in engaging in civil discourse on the political questions of the day,” Boliek told the crowd.
Wake GOP Chair Sandy Joiner said in the aftermath of Kirk’s assassination at an event in Utah 11 days ago, there’s been renewed interest in local Republican politics.
“We have people coming in, walking in off the street asking if they can change your voter registration, asking if they can help us, asking if they can sign up for canvassing or what they can help with,” Joiner said.
Those who attended on Sunday told ABC11 they hoped the moment of reflection would lead to lasting change.
“We need to be able to agree to disagree. I mean, we’ve always done that over the years. And I think that we should be able to do that in a safe way because all human life matters,” Harry said.
