CARY, N.C. (WTVD) — The Wake County School Board had a first look at plans to reassign students on Tuesday evening.

That’s in response to growth as well as underenrollment in some schools.

The changes will go into effect next school year as the district opens Hilltop Needmore Elementary School in Fuquay-Varina.

Students will be moved there to help fill the school and also to relieve crowding at other schools.

The exact number of students that will be affected wasn’t given Tuesday evening, but leaders say it’ll be fewer than the 3,500 students who were reassigned last year.

The public can weigh in on this first draft to help shape a second draft. Parents can go here to see whether their addresses will be affected.

The school board will make a final decision on Nov. 18.

School leaders said they’re also exploring an option where families can choose to stay at their schools if they give up bus service.

Last year, a reassignment plan shifted thousands of Wake County students to different schools as part of the struggle to address ongoing growth.
