The family had been searching for Richard McClintic for almost two weeks.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Sacramento family is grieving but grateful for closure after police arrested a caretaker in connection with the death of a missing man found in his own apartment.

Family members identified the victim as 59-year-old Richard McClintic, who lived with cerebral palsy and was last seen two weeks ago. Sacramento police said McClintic’s body was discovered Thursday inside his apartment at Woodbridge Apartments in South Natomas.

Outside his home, loved ones gathered for a candlelight vigil, leaving behind balloons, flowers, and candles to honor the man they say never let his disability hold him back.

“He minded his own business,” said McClintic’s oldest sister, Sherry Klagenberg. “I am angry right now about how this could have happened. Why?”

McClintic’s nephew, Ryan Klagenberg, said the family had been searching for him for almost two weeks.

“We already lost an aunt, his sister,” he said. “We have been trying to get ahold of him to let him know of that stuff. That is what turned into a missing person report.”

Ryan described his uncle as a “fiery guy, full of energy” who never let his condition define him.

“He was 59 years old with cerebral palsy and pushed through his entire life with that condition and never complained,” he said.

Stuart Robertson, McClintic’s former coach and high school classmate, remembered him for his positivity and curiosity.

“He was nonverbal, but there’s so many other ways he could communicate,” Robertson said. “He always had such a great smile on his face.”

Family and friends said they are thankful to police for their investigation and the arrest, and they’re now looking for justice.

“He was a good guy,” Sherry said. “He didn’t deserve this whatsoever. He’s in a better place now.”

Police said 41-year-old Christina Cowens remains in jail without bail. She faces multiple charges, including unlawful disposal of human remains and grand theft. Investigators said those charges could change once the identification and cause of death are confirmed.
