AURORA, Colo. — A suspect with a lengthy criminal history was arrested after leading police on a pursuit in a stolen van through Aurora, KKTV reported.

According to the Aurora Police Department, the pursuit began just before 5 p.m. on Aug. 23 when Flock Safety camera technology alerted officers to a stolen van, according to the report.

Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled. Police tried several PIT maneuvers to stop the vehicle, the last of which brought the vehicle to a stop. The pursuit ended after a flat tire disabled the van.

The suspect reportedly refused to exit the vehicle, prompting officers to attempt breaching the window using a 40mm launcher. When that failed, they broke the window using another tool and deployed pepper ball rounds inside the van.

The suspect’s response? He lit a cigarette, told officers he’d come out after finishing it, and sat back.

“Spoiler: pepper balls don’t wait, and neither do we. He quickly exited on his own,” APD said in a social media post.

Inside the van, officers found multiple credit and debit cards and IDs belonging to other individuals.
The suspect faces several charges, including motor vehicle theft, eluding, obstruction and criminal possession of financial devices.
