PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two surfers were rescued Tuesday afternoon just as the season’s first king tides start to roll in.
Just before 1:45 p.m., Cannon Beach Firefighters responded to a report of two surfers in distress at Indian Beach in Ecola State Park.
With the help of police, firefighters used a drone to locate the surfers. A water rescue team was able to bring them back to shore safely in about 15 minutes, according to a press release.
A high surf advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. A coastal flood advisory for minor tidal overflow remains in effect from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
Though the surfers weren’t injured, a spokesperson for the fire department said the incident is a reminder that visitors should be cautious when entering the ocean, especially when beach hazard statements have been issued.
As KOIN 6 News previously reported, king tides return to the Oregon Coast on Wednesday and will remain through Friday.
The fire district said people should stay off of jetties, rocks and logs in the surf zone, and never turn their back to the ocean.
