DENVER (KDVR) — Rep. Brittany Pettersen, from Colorado’s 7th Congressional District, is the latest politician to call on President Joe Biden to step down as the Democratic candidate.
On Friday, Pettersen posted a statement on her personal X account asking Biden to “please pass the torch.”
Her statement reads in part:
“Joe Biden saved our country once, and I’m joining the growing number of people in my district and across the country to ask him to do it again. Please pass the torch to one of our many capable Democratic leaders so we have the best chance to defeat Donald Trump, who is the greatest threat to the foundation of this country that we have ever faced.”
Rep. Brittany Pettersen
Pettersen represents the 7th Congressional District of Colorado in Jefferson, Broomfield, Lake, Park, Teller, Chaffee, Fremont, and Custer County after being elected in 2022.
Pettersen said she has “deep admiration and love for Joe Biden and all he has done for our country, which is why this decision is so painful, but my son and my constituents can’t suffer the consequences of inaction at this critical moment.”
Pettersen joins a growing number of Democratic politicians and celebrities who are calling for Biden to step down as the party nominee. The calls came after the nationally televised debate between Biden and Trump when political analysts said Biden did not perform at his best.
Since the debate, more than 15 Democratic lawmakers and Colorado’s own Democratic candidate Adam Frisch and now Petterson have asked Biden to do the right thing. However, Biden has said that he will continue to run.
