Airlines in the United States are now required to refund passengers if their flight is delayed or canceled. This new policy counts even if the customer didn’t necessarily ask for a refund.
The Department of Transportation stated that the final federal rule requiring that airlines dole out refunds in effect starting Monday. The refund does not include flight vouchers. The major change is happening right in time for holiday season, one of the busiest times of the year for an airport. The airlines must refund passengers within seven business days if they bought a ticket on a credit card and within 20 calendar days if they used another form of payment.
The Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg made the announcement yesterday stating “Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them — without a headache or haggling.”
American Airlines is the first airline to respond to the new refund policy. They stated “we support the automatic refund rule and are happy to accommodate customers with a refund when they choose not to rebook.”
