Two men were near the top of Humphreys Peak near Flagstaff when they were struck by lightning, deputies said.

Two hikers were struck by lightning on a mountain in northern Arizona , deputies said.
The men called 911 before 11 a.m. Oct. 22 from Humphreys Peak, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
They were near the summit when they were struck, deputies said.
Rescuers used UTVs to “close the distance to the injured hikers,” then set out on foot to find the men. Teams couldn’t reach them by helicopter because of lightning, hail and heavy rain, deputies said.
One of the hikers went down the mountain and was found at about 2:45 p.m. at an elevation of 10,650 feet, deputies said.
The second hiker was injured and couldn’t make it down any farther. He was found at an elevation of 11,800 feet and then carried down the mountain, deputies said.
Both men were taken to a hospital.
Humphreys Peak is just north of Flagstaff.
