AURORA, Ill. — A kitten is looking for a new home this week after officers in the western suburbs pulled him to safety after he found himself stuck between an ice machine and a hard place.
According to police, the rescue unfolded outside of an Amstar gas station located near Hill Avenue and Summit Avenue, in Aurora.
While it is unclear exactly when the rescue took place, Aurora police shared details about it in a social media post shared Friday morning.
Officers say the little tabby kitten’s spelunking skills were not particularly well polished as the cat, which appears to be about 4 months old, became wedged behind the gas station’s ice machine.
Officers were called to the scene following a call for assistance in the area, but never expected to spend the evening moving more than 1,000 pounds of ice in order to free the cat.
With the store clerk’s permission, several officers began unloading the machine bag by bag, in an effort to reduce the weight of the ice machine so they could shift it and pull the kitten free.
“It was truly a team effort to complete the mission … and while a batch of ice was lost in the process, we’re pleased to report no backs were strained, the kitten was unharmed, and he was turned over to City of Aurora IL Animal Care and Control to be reunited with his owner or placed for adoption,” a spokesperson for the Aurora Police Department said in the post.
The kitten, who was later named Cadence, was then turned over to animal control.
Offices say Cadence will be up for adoption soon once his stray hold, neutering and vaccinations are complete.
Officers say once available for adoption, Cadence will be listed 24petconnect.com, alongside a host of other pets looking for a new home.
