MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) — A woman visiting New York from California was changing her 10-month-old daughter in a seventh floor restroom at Macy’s Herald Square when a woman suddenly stabbed her from behind, police said.

It happened Thursday afternoon just before 3 p.m. at the flagship store during the heart of the holiday shopping season.

The baby was not injured. The 38-year-old victim was stabbed in the back and slashed in the arm and was taken to the hospital where she was said to be stable.

The victim and her husband work for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He disarmed the woman and held her for police.

Kerri Aherne, 43, of Tewksbury, Massachusetts, is charged with attempted murder in connection with the seemingly unprovoked attack.

She is expected to appear in court later Friday.

Officials say she is believed to be homeless and does not have any prior arrests.

A Macy’s spokesperson released a statement saying, “We are deeply saddened about the incident that took place today as the safety of our customers and colleagues is our top priority. We kindly defer any further questions to the local authorities.”
