We first met Veronica Scarborough in 2017. At the time she was delivering meals to families after school. Eight years later, her mission has grown.
PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. — In 2017, Veronica Scarborough was a school secretary at Waldon Woods Elementary in Clinton, Maryland. She told us she was on a mission.
“It’s an assignment. And when the Good Lord gives you an assignment, it’s important that you do it,” she said.
That assignment was making sure her students had enough to eat. Over the years, she noticed some of her ‘babies’ as she likes to call them, didn’t always have enough to eat. Ms. Scarborough says sometimes the children would ask for a snack, and she couldn’t say no.
“I would bring extra lunches and I would share. Then it became besides one student, two students, three students, and before you knew it, it was overwhelming!” she said.
She even went as far as making house calls to deliver hot meals to some of her families. After our story first aired in 2017, Scarborough says the donations came pouring in.
Eight years later, she’s now a guidance counselor at Suitland High School, but her mission remains the same. The constant donations over the years have allowed her to keep a small army of snacks in her office.
Students are allowed to visit her office during lunch to grab a snack. Many times students will stay to hang out.
“With Ms. Scarborough you can feel comfortable talking to her about anything,” said “Azzure Brannum, a senior at Suitland High School.
And it’s not just the students that appreciate the helping hand.
“The response from the parents has been even more overwhelming, you know, they know that their babies are safe and that they know that they can get something here and that means a lot,” said Scarborough.
Throughout the years, donations have also included coats. On any given day, Scarborough says there are dozens for her to hand out to her students in need.
“Some of them are a little ashamed to say, but if I notice a child that has on like a heavy sweater and not a jacket, sometimes I’ll pull them to the side and tell them I got something for you. I’m not trying to embarrass you. They look and they’re like any jacket I want? And I say any one you want, as long as it fits, its yours. So it’s a good feeling. I love it,” she said.
