Arlington firefighters rescue a toucan from behind a dishwasher.
ARLINGTON, Va. — This isn’t a typical animal rescue.
Arlington firefighters were dispatched to a home after receiving a call of a bird stuck behind a dishwasher on Sunday. According to Chester the toucan’s social media, Chester fell into the toilet while his owner, Maria Stagliano, was cleaning.
Even though the toilet was clean, Stagliano still wanted to make sure Chester had a proper bath. She went to wash Chester off but Chester had other plans as he’s not a big fan of baths, he accidently found a hole between the dishwasher and a false baseboard.
“I consider myself pretty handy, but when I started taking apart the front of the dishwasher, I noticed a bunch of pipes and tubes behind there,” said Stagliano. “I didn’t want to risk anything bursting or hurting Chester, so I figured I needed a professional to do the job. Unfortunately when I contacted emergency maintenance, the building told me maintenance said my issue wasn’t an emergency. I was really surprised to hear this since maintenance loves Chester and always asks me about him.”
“Chester was clearly scared because he wasn’t moving, he was soaking wet and cold, and he could’ve gotten into something back there like roach or rat poison. To me, this was an emergency, and i didn’t know where else to turn without my building’s help,” said Stagliano.
Stagliano called the Arlington Fire Department after her apartment complex determined that Chester’s predicament wasn’t an emergency. Crews responded to the call and were able to rescue Chester from behind the dishwasher.
Chester is safe and back to driving tiki boats and making people smile on his social media pages.
“I’m so grateful for my local fire department for being so kind and willing to assist me. As a very overprotective pet owner, their kindness during my time of stress meant everything. This isn’t the typical “cat stuck in a tree” scenario, but I am sure it’s a call they’ll remember,” said Stagliano.
