'The fight of his life': Bernie Kosar humbled and grateful for fan support

CLEVELAND (WJW) – Bernie Kosar found himself struggling to hold back tears as he reflected on all the support he has recently received from fans as he continues the fight of his life.

Kosar needs a liver transplant and told the FOX 8 I-Team last week that the procedure could happen any day.

“Bernie is more than a player,” said Scott Nunnari, of the Muni-Lot Browns Backers. “He is more like a hero and more like a friend.”

After our story ran, fans from all over Northeast Ohio and the United States reached out. Some even willing to donate part of their liver.

“I want to stay calm and look cool,” Kosar said. “I  don’t want to have a tear in my eye, but I want to say to everyone who reached out, who prayed, thank you so much.”

The former quarterback said he is particularly touched by those offering to give part of their own liver.

“University Hospital’s awesome, but they only do full liver,” Bernie explained.  “I explored the possibility of a partial one, but that’s not really in the cards.”

Bernie tells us he is waiting for a call from University Hospitals to get a full liver transplant. He said the call could come any day now.

While he waits for that call, he continues to go to the hospital a couple days a week for procedures. He is also going to Browns training camp and helping out with the Browns media staff. He said watching the new team come together is a great experience.

“I really feel at home here,” Bernie said. “I can’t thank the Browns and the Haslams enough for what they’re doing for me. They have supported me and have been great.”

Bernie said he is ready to pull through with the help of love and support from people like you.

“I just want people to know I’m looking forward actually to doing this,” Kosar said. “And all the support is huge. It helps so much.”
