  • BBC makes big change to show – one year after Michael Mosley’s death

Over a year on from Dr Michael Mosley’s tragic death aged 67, the BBC have announced it will be bringing back one of his popular TV programmes. The organisation has confirmed that rather than replacing Dr Michael with a sole presenter, three separate names will be hosting Just One Thing.

The series, which started as a podcast, focuses on Dr Michael’s theory that altering a single part of your life can have a huge impact on your health and wellbeing, from ingesting more beetroot to getting more sunshine. Only two episodes of the show were recorded before Michael who was found dead in June last year in a rocky area of Agia Marina.

The stars who will be hosting the programme are BBC Radio 1 Breakfast host Zoe Ball, Mastermind star Clive Myrie, and The One Show’s Roman Kemp. Each presenter will lead four episodes, and the show will see them travel to a different part of the UK to test ideas with individuals and communities. They will test out evidence-based advice, such as laughing to boost brain health and gardening to help your gut.

Lindsay Bradbury, commissioner for BBC Daytime, told The Sun: “This new series of Just One Thing builds on the legacy of the brilliance of Michael. It will offer very surprising takeaway tips on how we can try and improve our lives with minimum input for maximum rewards.”

    A heartbreaking loss

One year on from his death, Dr Michael’s family described the past year as “the hardest of our lives.”

“It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since we lost Michael,” his widow Clare wrote on Instagram. “Not a day goes by without thinking of him – his warmth, his laughter, his endless curiosity about the world, and his deep love for our family.

This past year has been the hardest of our lives. Navigating the loss of someone so central to our hearts and our home has changed everything. We have missed him in the big moments and the small ones. But we have also felt incredibly supported.”

She added that the “outpouring of love, stories and memories from so many of you” online had “meant more than we can ever say. We have taken real comfort in knowing just how many lives Michael touched – not only through his work, but through his kindness, humour, and deep desire to help people live well for longer.”

    Dr Michael’s legacy

Despite his passing, Michael’s family have been passionate about continuing Dr Michael’s legacy. In May, they announced a new Michael Mosley Memorial Research Fund, to help to appoint a dedicated research scientist to help improve the metabolic health of the nation.

A clinical research fellowship will be established to honour his memory in partnership with King’s College London and the Chronic Disease Research Foundation.

The family statement continued: “We are trying, as a family to look forward. To carry on the work Michael was so passionate about. To live with purpose and joy, as he would have wanted us to.”

In their one-year anniversary message, Mrs Mosley and her family thanked “everyone who has reached out, shared their grief, and carried us with their compassion.” They noted: “Your messages, letters and acts of remembrance have helped us through the darkest days.”

  • Zoe Ball reveals touching tribute to late boyfriend following tragic death: ‘He’s always with you’

Former Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball has opened up on how she paid tribute to her partner in the aftermath his tragic death.

In 2017, Zoe lost her boyfriend, Billy, who died by suicide at the age of 40. His heartbreaking death came as the cameraman had a long battle with depression.

But it seems in the aftermath of his death, Zoe found comfort in gardening. And it was all because of his tattoos.

Zoe Ball reveals touching tributes to late partner Billy

Speaking on her Dig It Deep podcast with Jo Whiley, Zoe found herself opening up about why she relies on gardening so much.

The 54-year-old admitted that she only began gardening following Billy’s death, because her friends would bring her so many roses.

She told Jo: “I had a tiny little yard and people brought roses for me when I lost Billy. He had tattoos up his arm of roses.

“When we lost him, a lot of his loved ones went and got the rose tattoo for him. So people would then bring me roses to grow for him. It was such a lovely thing.”

Zoe, who has had a lot of tough times, admitted “planting for lost loved ones” was a “wonderful” experience because when the plants bloom it’s like “they’re always with you”.

She added: “That’s how it started. I had this tiny little, sort of backyard, with a lot of roses in it.”

What has Zoe said about Billy’s death?

This isn’t the first time Zoe Ball has spoken about her late partner. In 2020, just three years after his death she revealed how she struggled in the aftermath of his death.

She said during an appearance on Desert Island Discs: “He had lived with depression for a huge chunk of his life. It’s so hard to watch someone you love and care for struggle with mental health.

“Losing him was the hardest thing I have ever had to deal with in my life. I think something that’s really important to share is that there is hope. There is help available.”

In May this year Zoe also paid tribute to Billy on the anniversary of his death. Uploading a photo of her late partner on a motorbike, she penned: “8 years, forever in our hearts Billface.”

Zoe’s own daughter, Nelly, who she shares with Fatboy Slim commented: “Miss him everyday x.”

  • Viewers’ 6 key complaints on everything that ITV’s Mamma Mia! I Have A Dream got wrong

Viewers’ 6 key complaints on everything that ITV’s Mamma Mia! I Have A Dream got wrong

Mamma Mia! I Have A Dream aired on ITV last night and the brand new entertainment show certainly got viewers talking.

But maybe not in a great way. While many loved the Abba-themed show, others wasted no time in complaining.

In case you missed it, the show saw 14 of the nation’s most talented musical theatre hopefuls head off to gorgeous Greece. And when we say the scenery was breathtaking… it was simply dreamy!

The hopefuls will be competing for the lead roles of Sophie and Sky in the West End production of Mamma Mia!.

But what did ITV viewers think of the new show? Let’s find out…

The ITV programme seemed to be the love child of Love Island and The X Factor. It saw the hopefuls perform and show what they’ve got to the four judges – comedian Alan Carr, vocalist Amber Riley, theatre performer Samantha Barks and singer Jessie Ware.

Meanwhile, Zoe Ball hosted the glitzy show. It all started off on a great foot, but it wasn’t long before some complaints came rolling in from viewers.

From box ticking to the choice of judges, it seems aspects of the show didn’t go down too well.

    Choice of judges

The first complaint made by some viewers was the judging line-up. One person wrote: “As for the #MammaMia judges, I get Samantha Barks and Amber Riley, they’ve both done West End theatre, but I’ve never heard of ‘pop star’ Jessie Ware and whilst I love Alan Carr?”

Another added: “The judges are being far too kind considering it’s blatantly obvious several are wrong for the parts.”

Meanwhile, someone else wrote: “I like Alan Carr as a presenter…but I really don’t get the decision to make him a judge on this show.”

    Box ticking?

Some other viewers accused the show of ‘ticking boxes’. They thought that some of the contestants weren’t necessarily picked for their voices…

One person said: “Given that we didn’t see the auditions, I can’t help but think the finalists were chosen more for ‘ticking boxes’ purposes rather than their voices.”

Someone else claimed: “No way most of these were the best out of thousands of auditions just tick the diversity box to get through.”

Too much screaming on ITV show Mamma Mia! I Have A Dream?

Of course, the contestants were over the moon to be in Greece and performing on a Mamma Mia-inspired set. Who wouldn’t be?!

But it seems their excitement began grating on some viewers. Many complained about the amount of screaming! One said: “Sorry, but I turned off after 20 mins as too much screaming & not enough real singing!”

Another wrote: “We lasted a full 5 minutes of the new #mammamia programme. All the screeching made it like a 2nd rate cross between X Factor judges’ houses and Love Island.”

A third complained: “I didn’t make it as far as the singing, the screaming at the start was too much to bear. Turned off.”

    Tough crowd, eh?

Now poor Zoe didn’t escape the criticism online as some took issue with her outfit choice! Channelling Meryl Streep’s outfit for character Donna from the Mamma Mia movie, Zoe opted for a pair of dunagrees.

One person tweeted: “I honestly think they edited the footage so we didn’t have chance to take in the true awfulness of Zoe Ball’s dungarees.” Ouch!

Others took issue with her hosting. One said: “It’s already annoying me. What a twee little show. Even Zoe Ball is annoying me.”

Another added: “I’m not sure so far, this hasnt won we over. Zoe Ball doing my head in.”

    Jet 2 music…

The show was sponsored by Jet 2. Which meant one thing. The return of Jess Glynne’s song Hold My Hand – the song the company uses for their adverts as well as flights.

And if you’ve ever been on a Jet 2 flight, you know it’s the last thing you want to hear on repeat. Especially when you’re coming home from your holiday!

Viewers thought the same as one tweeted: “If Jet2 are sponsoring #MammaMiaDream that means we’ve got to listen to that [bleep] Jess Glynne song for the whole series.” Yup.

Another added: “Jess Glynne Jet 2 ads haunting the new Mamma Mia series is nightmarish.”

    Adverts

Other viewers believed the show was interrupted by too many adverts! One complained: “@ITV killing @MammaMiaMusical TV show with all these adverts!!!”

Another wrote: “@ITV @mammamiadream surely you’re taking the [bleep] with the adverts tonight.”

Someone else ranted: “Too many adverts – which accounts for why this show is so bloody long.”

BUT. There were plenty of viewers who loved the new show. One gushed: “Love love LOVE this! #mammamiadream.”

Another added: “Ahh I love it! Such a good fun, entertaining, family friendly show, and it’s Mamma Mia. I mean, what is there not to like.”
