  • 17-year-old arrested after group smashes into The Kushery cannabis shop in Everett, WA

A teen has been arrested after he was accused of being part of a group involved in a smash-and-grab burglary at a cannabis shop in Everett.

The crime was caught on security video at a neighboring business. The group led law enforcement on a chase following the break-in.

    The backstory:

Security video shows the moment thieves smashed into The Kushery cannabis shop.

Early Sunday, two cars appeared in the video first. The driver in one of the vehicles first pushed a cement bollard out of the way, then rammed the storefront, triggering an alarm.

At one point, the group appeared to jump out of the getaway car and tried to run into the store, but there was one more secure barrier that the car had not punched through inside the store. The driver had to reset, ramming the entrance again, before the group could run into the store.

Law enforcement was on the scene, just as video showed the group jumping back into a getaway car and speeding away as they gave chase.

    What they’re saying:

Regular customer Tina Littlefield says it was disappointing to hear about the theft.

“I really support local businesses, this is a local business, so I hate to see anything bad happen,” Littlefield said.

Mill Creek Police and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office say officers and deputies pursued the group in what they now believe was a stolen Kia Optima.

The pursuit ran from the cannabis shop south to the Maltby area where law enforcement used spike strips to damage the car’s tires near 180th and SR 9. The driver eventually crashed into a ditch.

“I don’t know what possesses people to even think about doing stuff like that. It’s not something I would have ever done, even at 17,” said Littlefield.

Law enforcement said six people dressed in masks, gloves and hooded jackets ran from the car.

“My only comment was, ‘I hope they caught them and prevent them from committing further crime,’” said Littlefield.

A King County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit helped to track the group east to a large property where the 17-year-old was located and taken into custody.

“I hope that people just think things through a little more, like I said, with local businesses it’s hard enough to keep going,” said Littlefield.

Anyone with information, or who can identify the additional suspects involved, is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office tip line at 425-388-3845.

  • ‘Seattle News Weekly’: School shooting concerns

Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens ages one to 19-years-old in the United States, according to Every Town for Gun Safety

On the seventh episode of the “Seattle News Weekly” podcast, FOX 13 Seattle anchors Erin Mayovsky and John Hopperstad talk about the threat of school shootings and what laws Washington state has passed in hopes of limiting the number of deadly incidents.

Earlier this month, police arrested a 13-year-old from Pierce County for making mass shooting threats online. The 13-year-old boy is charged with unlawful possession of a gun, unlawful possession of fireworks and threats toward a school.

On the podcast, Mayovsky and Hopperstad talked about concerns surrounding this case, specifically questioning how he had access to the guns. Investigators found 23 guns, many 3-D printed and untraceable, in his home, along with evidence of his obsession with past mass shooters, including imitating and idolizing them.

They further discussed the statistics surrounding gun violence and youth in the country and around the state of Washington. Mayovsky said in an average year, 935 people die from guns in Washington alone.

They discussed the differences between gun control laws in the United States and compared them to other countries. Specifically, in Australia, where the National Firearms Agreement (NFA) was implemented in 1996, following the Port Arthur massacre, which banned certain semi-automatic and pump-action firearms, established a buyback program, created a national firearms registry and introduced strict licensing and waiting periods for gun ownership.

The podcast concluded with a lighter topic, where they discussed the celebration surrounding the Seattle Mariners and their clinching of the AL West Division, Cal Raleigh’s legacy and the overall morale between fans and the community.

  • ‘Seattle News Weekly’: Renton’s abandoned building, hate crimes

The city of Renton has received criticism from community members this week, due to safety hazards in abandoned buildings. Additionally, this week, a serious hate crime occurred in Renton, involving teenagers who chased and beat a transgender woman.

On episode six of the “Seattle News Weekly” podcast, FOX 13 Seattle Anchor David Rose and Renton Mayor Armando Pavone discuss a former Boeing office building that has become a safety hazard and sparked local businesses’ frustrations due to vandalism and squatting, along with a recent attack on a transgender woman in Renton and how the region is planning to prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

On the podcast, Rose asked Mayor Pavone about the costs of this building, both pertaining to the dollar amount of fines the city has implemented on the property and surrounding businesses’ costs for security and fixes. Pavone said that once the property owners saw the fines increased to $3.5 million, it got their attention.

They further discussed the legal steps the city of Renton would need to take in order to properly help the situation, ethically and legally.

Earlier this week, four young men in Renton were arrested in connection with a hate crime assault of a transgender woman. The woman said young men were harassing a security guard, which led her to ask them, “Don’t you have anything better to do?”

Later that evening, the woman was walking back through the area, when two of the teenage brothers chased down and beat her near the Renton Transit Center Monday evening.

On the podcast, Mayor Pavone said, “We need to take a stronger stance.”

The podcast concluded with a discussion over the regional approach for the large influx of visitors for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to the mayor, the whole county is coming up with a plan to make the event as enjoyable for visitors as possible.

Police arrested a teen and a man for allegedly harassing women while wearing clown masks and flashing guns in Seattle’s Bitter Lake neighborhood.

    What they’re saying:

According to the Seattle Police Department (SPD), officers were flagged down by two women on Aurora Avenue North at around 12:20 a.m. The women told officers that two masked men had approached them near North 128th Street; one appeared to be holding a gun, and the other repeatedly adjusted his waistband.

The women ran away, fearing they were going to be abducted.

While speaking with the victims, officers saw the suspect’s car pull into a nearby fast-food parking lot.

Officers contacted the suspects and saw clown masks and extended gun magazines in the car.

Authorities say the 19-year-old admitted that the incident was part of a prank and showed officers a video of it. Both suspects were arrested for investigation of felony harassment. The 19-year-old was booked into the King County Jail. The other suspect, a 17-year-old boy, was booked into the Judge Patricia H. Clark Children and Family Justice Center.

  • Deputies arrest 13-year-old in Pierce County, WA over school shooting threats

Police arrested a 13-year-old boy in Pierce County over the weekend after he allegedly made threats to carry out a school shooting and claimed to have access to firearms.

    Timeline:

According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), deputies received a tip about the juvenile’s threats to kill on Friday evening. On Saturday at around 1 a.m., deputies and a SWAT team served a warrant at the suspect’s home near the corner of Chesney Road East and 20th Avenue Court East. He was taken into custody and booked into Remann Hall without incident.

Authorities say the investigation remains active.

During the search, deputies found numerous firearms, both secured and unsecured, as well as loaded magazines with school shooter writings on them. Law enforcement also recovered clothing and writings that appeared to support a typical mass shooting scenario. All of these items were confiscated.

The 13-year-old was last enrolled in the Franklin Pierce School District in 2021, but has not been enrolled since. He is not currently an active student in any school district, authorities said.

    What they’re saying:

“We want to thank all involved agencies and the Pierce County Sheriff personnel who have spent the last 24 hours tirelessly working this case and bringing closure to something that could have harmed our community,” the PCSO wrote in a press release. “Thanks to their quick actions, we are safe today.”

    YPD Youth Conference 2024

National Campaign to Reduce Youth Violence.

Given the national outcry about youth violence in schools and outside of schools making education difficult for teenagers and young adults, the YPD Youth Conference has declared a national campaign to reduce youth violence.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) report, youth violence is common. Homicide is the third leading cause of death for young people ages 10-24 and the leading cause of death for non-Hispanic Black or African American youth. Emergency departments treat over 800 young people for physical assault-related injuries each day.

Youth violence is costly. In 2020, youth homicides and nonfatal physical assault-related injuries resulted in an estimated $122 billion annually in costs, including medical care, lost work, and quality of life. This estimate does not include costs to the criminal justice system.

Conference Theme: “Good Education is the key to success,” — Joshua 1:8.

Objective: “Get your college education or the equivalent, solve conflict without violence, say no to drugs, crimes, violence, or bullying, and plan to be a productive member of society.”

Date: Saturday, July 13, 2024, starting at 10 am and with Livestream.

Raleigh Police Department host free gun lock giveaway at Triangle Shooting Academy

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — The Raleigh Police Department is continuing its push to address youth gun violence.

RPD held a free gun lock giveaway on Saturday at the Triangle Shooting Academy.

The goal was to make sure families in Wake County know why it’s important to store firearms securely, know how to do that and understand the legal consequences if they don’t.

Earlier this week, the Wake County School Board passed a resolution on safe gun storage.

WATCH | Wake County school board passes safe gun storage resolution

The resolution directs staffers in Wake County schools to “provide families with information and resources on the importance of secure gun storage.”

This comes amid a growing movement across the country for school boards.

The resolution cited a few statistics:

    • 1,200 children and teens die by gun suicide each year, most often using guns belonging to a family member
    • Every year, an average of 350 children under the age of 18 unintentionally shoot themselves or someone else. That’s nearly one unintentional shooting per day, and more than 70 percent of these incidents take place inside a home

  • ‘Guitars Not Guns’ aims to curb youth violence through musical exploration

‘Guitars Not Guns’ aims to curb youth violence through musical exploration

A group of students in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood graduated from a music program designed to curb youth violence.

Guitars Not Guns is a volunteer program dedicated to teaching children to play the guitar, directing their energy into more positive and creative outlets.

“We’re clearly anti-gun violence,” said Tim Wong, the director of Guitars Not Guns King County Chapter. “What we’re doing in our own little way is providing some alternate positive thing to keep some youth from taking a different direction.”

About a dozen students participated in the eight-week program at Miller Community Center. Friday was their final week of participation. Their lead guitar instructor was Jack Ballard.

“The way I look at it is that I give them two things: learn a structure, learn the discipline and learn to overcome frustrations,” said Ballard.

Guitars Not Guns, a national program, fosters personal development that hopes to divert at-risk youth away from self-destructive influences such as drugs, alcohol and guns.

Guitars Not Guns provides children between the ages of eight and 18 with guitars and lessons.

At the end of Friday’s final lesson, participating students who attended every lesson were given their equipment to take home.

“It’s a beautiful thing,” said parent Moxie-Svetlana Hubbard-Shirley. “I saw my daughters taking out the guitar to deal with their stress and that’s cool.”

Miller Community Center plans to host its next round of Guitars Not Guns in April.

The program is looking for musical instructors to teach and mentor upcoming students. Anyone interested is asked to contact Tim Wong at tim.wong@guitarsnotguns.org.

  • Garfield HS parents call for community safety following last week’s shootings

Garfield HS parents call for community safety following last week’s shootings

Community members in Seattle’s Central District gathered for a public safety meeting Monday night to address concerns over recent gun violence in the neighborhood.

The meeting was scheduled after two recent shootings that happened on Wednesday within a few hours of one another.

“Since those shootings, I’ve been getting calls from parents wanting answers,” said long-time public safety Advisory Council Liaison, Victoria Beach. “We immediately organized. Do I think there will be concrete answers? Probably not. But this is a part of the process.”

Last Wednesday, a 17-year-old girl was shot at a bus stop outside Garfield High School in the afternoon.

Seattle police have said she was not the intended target, however, no one has been arrested in the shooting.

Police described the suspect as a “teen boy wearing a camouflage ski mask.” It was reported the suspect fired the shots at the bus shelter from a light-colored SUV. The SUV was last seen traveling westbound on East Jefferson Street.

Hours after that shooting, the Seattle Police Department (SPD) to a deadly shooting that claimed the life of 41-year-old Eboni Walker. The shooting happened just blocks away from Garfield High School.

“My student is terrified. I am terrified,” said parent Karen Emmerman Mazner. “I’m ready to do anything I can as a community member. What are we doing right now?”

Emmerman Mazner like many people at Monday’s meeting demanded immediate actions and solutions from the city.

“Immediately after the shooting, we had officers in the area,” said Captain Jung Trinh. “It’s going to continue through Friday. We assigned two officers to Garfield High School and the surrounding area.”

But many in the audience said that’s not enough to make them feel safe.

“Every morning is a concern,” said Garfield High School parent Melanie Skinner. “I tell her I love her and hope that she’s not harmed by gun violence.”

Parents who spoke with FOX 13 said they need more action and less lip service.

Monday’s meeting follows months of concern about safety from community members.

In June 2023, Garfield High School parents held a meeting regarding gun violence near the school campus.

  • Shuffle of juvenile prisoners lands 8 at adult penitentiary

Shuffle of juvenile prisoners lands 8 at adult penitentiary

NEW ORLEANS — A controversial transfer of juvenile prisoners to a temporary facility at Louisiana’s sprawling high security prison farm for adult convicts involves a shuffle of youths to and from four different lockups around the state, officials said Thursday.

As of Wednesday night, the facility at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola held eight young offenders in a building isolated from the adult population. That building is now being called the Feliciana Center for Youth. The penitentiary is in a remote rural area in West Feliciana Parish, north of Baton Rouge.

The move of young offenders was announced in July by Gov. John Bel Edwards. It came as state officials were under growing pressure to do something after the latest in a series of escapes from the violence-plagued Bridge City Center for Youth in suburban New Orleans. That escape involved six inmates who overpowered a guard and jumped a fence. One inmate is suspected in a carjacking and shooting that happened before all were recaptured.

However, the state said in a news release that the eight at the Feliciana facility are not from Bridge City, as initially announced by a state senator. Four were from Acadiana Center for Youth at St. Martinville in southwest Louisiana and four were from Swanson Center for Youth at Monroe in northeast Louisiana.

Ten youth offenders from Bridge City, initially thought to have been taken to the Feliciana facility at Angola, were actually transferred to Monroe, Nicolette Gordon, a spokeswoman for the state Office of Juvenile Justice confirmed Thursday.

State Sen. Patrick Connick, whose district includes Bridge City, acknowledged he had been mistaken when he said the Bridge City youths had been taken to Angola, in accordance with plans announced in July. Connick said in a Thursday interview he was told by officials that behavior at the Bridge City Center has improved since the pending transfers to Angola and stepped up security at Bridge City were announced in July.

Connick said juvenile justice officials transferred prisoners this week based on assessment of the behavior of individuals at each of the state juvenile lockups. The ones moved to Angola, he said, “were the worst of the worst.”

Gordon said this week’s moves were the first of a three-phase transfer. She said the youths were evaluated in accordance with a state law passed earlier this year that ordered juvenile justice authorities to establish a tiered system for classifying youths as low-, medium- or high-risk based on age, aggressive tendencies and other factors.

Juvenile justice advocates and families of the young inmates have objected to the transfer of youths to Angola. The penitentiary is home to serious offenders, some sentenced to death. It is where executions of condemned prisoners are carried out. It has its own checkered history of sometimes bloody violence and has been the subject of litigation alleging inadequate medical care.

A lawsuit filed by opponents of the transfer contended the trauma of being housed at Angola would be irreversible.

U.S. District Judge Shelly Dick, however, said that “while locking children in cells at night at Angola is untenable, the threat of harm the youngsters present to themselves, and others, is intolerable. The untenable must yield to the intolerable.”

It’s unclear exactly how long the Feliciana facility at Angola will be used as a youth lockup. Officials have said space is being built at the Jetson Correctional Center for Youth near Baton Rouge for those with disciplinary problems. Also, new juvenile housing at the Swanson facility in Monroe is to be in operation by the spring, and a behavioral health unit there is being renovated.
