    MGM Resorts shocked New York when it abruptly yanked its casino bid for Yonkers just weeks before applications were due last fall. Despite the Las Vegas-based casino operator folding on its full-scale casino pursuit for its Empire City racino, the company remains committed to bettering the region through community grants and volunteering.

    Throughout 2025, MGM’s hundreds of employees at Empire City Casino donated their time by volunteering with various local nonprofits. The casino also provided endowments and funding to charities across Westchester County, including in Yonkers and Mount Vernon, as well as in the neighboring Bronx.

    Racino Remaining 

    It was Oct. 14, 2025, when MGM Resorts pulled its downstate New York casino application for slot machines, live dealer table games, and sports betting privileges. MGM had long been considered a favorite for one of the three concessions.

    MGM had pitched a $2.3 billion overhaul of Empire City, a racino with a gaming floor spanning 138,000 square feet fixed with approximately 4,500 slot-like video lottery terminals (VLT) and electronic table game positions. MGM concluded that “competitive and economic assumptions” led to the investment no longer being attractive.

    MGM, calling the withdrawal a “difficult decision,” added that its investment was calculated on the assumption that it would receive a 30-year casino license. State officials last year said the initial licenses would be good for only 15 years.

    Taken together, these events result in a proposition that no longer aligns with our commitment to capital stewardship, nor to that of our real estate partner in Yonkers, VICI,” an MGM statement read.

    The company nonetheless reaffirmed its commitment to Yonkers and Westchester County.

    “MGM Resorts has been a proud partner of the City of Yonkers and the State of New York since we purchased Empire City Casino in 2019. The property has generated more than $5 billion for New York State education, including $1.6 billion under our ownership. We know our decision will impact many individuals; we remain committed to operating the property in its current format and believe it will continue to enjoy success serving customers in Yonkers and the surrounding communities,” the company explained.

    Community Engagement

    MGM’s Empire City and its employees helped Feeding Westchester deliver more than 20,000 meals to seniors and needy families in 2025. The casino also provided funding for Catholic Charities Community Services, an initiative of the Archdiocese of New York, to provide 9,000 meals.

    Other Empire City Casino beneficiaries included the Boys and Girls Club of Mount Vernon, the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers High School, and the Morris Heights Health Center.

  • Forklift error at Yonkers beauty products warehouse spurs chemical leak and fire

    A chemical leak and fire at a suburban New York beauty products warehouse Tuesday may have been caused by a forklift mishap, officials said, warning neighbors to stay indoors. Commuter trains were temporarily stalled in the area ahead of the evening rush hour.

    The trouble began around noon at a facility in Yonkers, a city of about 211,000 people on the Hudson River just north of New York City’s Bronx borough. Firefighters believe a forklift damaged a container while moving products around the tightly packed space, and the container leaked a chemical of some sort, Fire Commissioner William Fitzpatrick said at a news conference.

    Voice and email messages were sent to a hair and skin products company that operates from the address.

    Fitzpatrick said firefighters arrived to find a large cloud of white chemical smoke pouring out of the warehouse, and within an hour, the chemical reaction intensified into a fire.

    Police warned residents of several surrounding blocks to stay inside because of “a hazmat situation involving bleach.” Cars and pedestrians were told to avoid the area.

    Two people with pre-existing medical problems were escorted out of the area, Fitzpatrick said. About half a dozen firefighters suffered minor injuries during an hourslong response.

    Ultimately, wind blew a lot of the smoke toward the nearby Hudson River and away from buildings, the commissioner said. He said firefighters had the blaze under control by late afternoon.

    The Metro-North Railroad stopped running trains in the area around 3:30 p.m., but they started rolling again two hours later.

    Amazon worker knifed in face in brazen NYC attack


    An Amazon worker was attacked on the job — stabbed in the face by a suspect who walked up to the 23-year-old victim from behind — didn’t say a word — and sliced him from his lip to his earlobe, according to police reports.

    Surveillance video captures the attack that left William Herrera, a young father from Yonkers, scarred for life.

    Herrera says he was delivering Amazon packages to an apartment building on Valentine Avenue in the Bedford section of the Bronx when he was attacked two weeks ago.

    Grainy footage shows the suspect dressed in black approach Herrera on the sidewalk and jab out with an object in his right hand. The two struggle. Herrera moves to run around the Amazon van and the suspect follows him out of view.

    Herrera, who is bleeding profusely from his face, flags down an officer until an ambulance arrives.

    Now he’s got a six-inch scar.

    “I got to look every day in the mirror and see this on my face,” Herrera said. “I’ve never had one stitch in my entire life and the first time I got a stitch, I got 110 stitches?”

    The 23-year-old says his attacker seemed bent on wounding him, rather than potentially lifting something from the unlocked Amazon van behind him.

    “My van was completely open. He could have took the whole van if he wanted to,” Herrera said. “He didn’t take nothing. He just wanted to cut me, I guess.”

    Herrera says he is now worried about his own safety when in the Bronx, and he is fearful that the stabber may come upon another unsuspecting New Yorker.

    His wife, Lauren Soriano, who is pregnant with their second child, said, “I just hope that they catch him. So we can get justice.”

    The couple also has a 2-year-old son.

    Officials in Yonkers are slamming legal marijuana laws in New York after police revealed that an apartment building fire that left one man dead and displaced dozens was caused by a heating lamp used to grow marijuana.

    NEW YORK – The massive fire at a Yonkers apartment building earlier this week that left one person dead and dozens of families displaced was sparked by a marijuana growing operation, according to police.

    The fire at the Mona Lisa Luxury Cooperative Residence on Wednesday started in a first-floor apartment, according to fire officials, and was likely caused by an electric heating lamp used to cultivate six marijuana plants that a resident was growing for personal use.

    “Evidence recovered at scene and statements from the resident lead investigators to believe that the lamp detached from its hanging support and broke, sparked on the floor starting the fire. Upon discovering the fire, the resident proceeded to raise the alarm and alert his neighbors,” the Yonkers Police Department said in a statement Saturday afternoon.
