The Yash Chopra Foundation, the philanthropic arm of leading Indian studio Yash Raj Films, unveiled a new scholarship program on Friday, coinciding with what would have been the 92nd birthday of its founder, Yash Chopra.

The initiative aims to support children of low-income Hindi film industry workers who are registered members of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees. The program will offer financial assistance of up to INR500,000 ($5,975) per student for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in fields including mass communication, filmmaking, production, direction, visual arts, cinematography and animation.

Yash Chopra, who died in 2012, was a pioneering figure in Indian cinema. Known equally for his gritty films and romantic dramas, Chopra directed numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful films over his five-decade career. His “Waqt” popularized the multi-starrer in Hindi films, while his grittier films include all-time classics “Deewar” and “Kaala Patthar.” Chopra is regarded as the father of romance in Indian cinema because of his romantic films including “Silsila,” “Lamhe,” “Kabhi Kabhie,” “Veer-Zaara,” “Dil To Pagal Hai,” “Chandni” and “Jab Tak Hai Jaan.” He founded Yash Raj Films in 1970, which grew to become one of India’s largest film production companies.

Akshaye Widhani, CEO of YRF, said: “The legendary film-maker and our founder Yash Chopra always believed in giving back to Hindi film industry in whichever way possible. His philosophy is ingrained in our company’s culture. So, on his 92nd birth anniversary, we are happy to embark on a mission to empower kids of the Hindi film fraternity.”

The selection process will include personalized interviews for candidates. Widhani said that the initiative would “inspire and empower deserving students to follow their dreams and subsequently make a mark in our film industry.”

Alia Bhatt, Sharvari Yash Raj Spy Universe Film Sets ‘The Railway Men’ Helmer Shiv Rawail as Director (EXCLUSIVE)

The first female-led film in leading Indian studio Yash Raj Films‘ (YRF) spy universe has found its director in Shiv Rawail, Variety has learned.

Alia Bhatt (“Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” “Heart of Stone”) and Sharvari (“Bunty Aur Babli 2”) will play super agents in the as-yet-untiitled film. Rawail, who had previous stints as assistant director on Yash Raj Films productions “Dhoom 3,” starring Aamir Khan, and “Fan,” starring Shah Rukh Khan, debuted as a director with the studio’s 2023 Netflix series “The Railway Men.” The four-part series deals with the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy and marks the first in a creative partnership between the streamer and YRF.

“The Railway Men” debuted atop Netflix’s South Asian charts and at No. 8 on the streamer’s non-English TV Top 10. In its second week, the show stayed at No. 1 across South Asia and soared to third position in the global chart, where it remained for eight weeks. The cast is led by R. Madhavan (“Rocketry”), Kay Kay Menon (“Bambai Meri Jaan”), Divyenndu Sharma (“Mirzapur”), emerging talent Babil Khan (“Friday Night Plan”) and Sunny Hinduja (“The Family Man”).

Created by producer and YRF chair and MD Aditya Chopra, the spy universe kicked off with the Tiger franchise, starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, beginning with “Ek Tha Tiger” (2012) and “Tiger Zinda Hai” (2017), and continued with “War” (2019), starring Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff. “Pathaan,” starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, was one of the biggest Indian hits of 2023. “Tiger 3,” which also released in 2023, is another Top 10 hit. Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan will headline “Tiger vs Pathaan,” while “Brahmastra” filmmaker Ayan Mukerji will direct “War 2,” starring Hrithik Roshan, NTR Jr. and Kiara Advani.

“Shiv‘s debut directorial for YRF, ‘The Railway Men,’ is a humongous hit and he is the talk of the town today. He is young and has a brilliant pulse on what the youth would want to consume as entertainment as is evident with the global success that he has delivered under the guidance of Aditya Chopra. Thus, Adi is confident that he is the best director to helm the young female-led action entertainer from the YRF spy universe that stars Alia Bhatt in the lead with the rising star of the industry, Sharvari,” a trade source told Variety.

The film will commence production this year.

Keerthy Suresh, Radhika Apte to Headline YRF Entertainment Revenge Thriller Series ‘Akka’ (EXCLUSIVE)

    [ad_1]

Radhika Apte (“Andhadhun”) and Keerthy Suresh (“Maamannan”) will lead leading Indian studio Yash Raj Films’ streaming production arm YRF Entertainment’s new series “Akka,” Variety has learned.

The period thriller will be directed by Dharmaraj Shetty. “Keerthy Suresh and Radhika Apte are considered two of the most gifted female actors in India today. They are incredibly natural artistes [who] are hailed as sheer tours de force on screen having delivered incredible performances project after project. So, the fact that Keerthy and Radhika have been pitted against each other makes ‘Akka’ one of the most intriguing streaming projects being made in the country currently,” a trade source told Variety.

“The project is being directed by debutant writer and director Dharmaraj Shetty, a disruptive creative mind who has been recently found by [Yash Raj Films chair and MD] Aditya Chopra. His vision for ‘Akka’ grabbed Aditya’s attention and the project was greenlit instantly with a brief from Adi to make ‘Akka’ one of the biggest tentpole series that YRF Entertainment will ever make. Every detail of this project will be kept under wraps purposely by YRF to build intrigue,” the source added.

YRF Entertainment is currently basking in the success of its first series “The Railway Men,” which is among the top 10 shows worldwide on Netflix. It is a tribute to the unsung heroes of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, starring R. Madhavan, Kay Kay Menon, Divyenndu Sharma and Babil Khan. The outfit’s second show is “Mandala Murders,” a multi-season series billed as a gritty crime thriller. Vaani Kapoor, who won acclaim playing a transgender character in film “Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui,” leads the series alongside Vaibhav Raj Gupta (“Gullak”), Surveen Chawla (“Decoupled”) and Jameel Khan (“Gullak”). The series is currently in production.

On the film front, the studio’s latest instalment in its spy universe, “Tiger 3,” starring Salman Khan, is currently on release and has grossed $48 million.
