  • Planet of Lana II – Expanding the Story for an Ambitious Sequel – Xbox Wire

    Summary

    •  Game directors Adam Stjärnljus and Klas Martin Eriksson reveal what to expect from the story of this anticipated sequel.
    • Learn more about how the planet of Novo has evolved, and what to expect from the narrative.
    • Planet of Lana II: Children of the Leaf will be released in 2026 for Xbox consoles and Xbox on PC as an Xbox Play Anywhere title, and will be available day one with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Just like its predecessor, Planet of Lana II’s story is told in a made-up language, and without subtitles. We want players to think of the narrative as another puzzle to be solved and allow them their own interpretation of the characters, their relationships and motivations. But in this article, we thought it would be fun to invite Xbox Wire readers to learn a bit more about how Novo itself has changed since the first game, and what to expect ahead of landing on this beautiful, beleaguered planet this time around.

    A Changing Planet

The first Planet of Lana followed 11-year-old Lana on a heartfelt rescue mission after her sister and village were taken by cold, mysterious machines. With her adorable companion Mui at her side, she crossed a world filled with danger and discovery to protect their beautiful planet, Novo. But what she uncovered was only the beginning of a far bigger story…

Chaos grips Novo after the arrival of advanced alien technology, forcing its many tribes to adapt or perish. A new society—The ruthless Dijinghala—uses the technology to strip the planet’s resources and, when Lana’s niece gets caught in the middle of this exploitation, Lana and Mui set out on another adventure to reclaim Novo’s future. But things get increasingly more complicated along the way as they are forced to confront their own past, as well as that of their home world.

    Different Factions, Different Challenges

Since the events of Planet of Lana, three major factions have emerged on Novo and they all have very different attitudes towards the arrival of the machines.

    • Tailo Village – Nestled among a calm cove in Novo’s southern lakelands, Lana’s home village has adopted a nuanced attitude to the presence of the machines, and largely made them a part of everyday life. They are used for agriculture, fishing and other infrastructure – the relationship is one of symbiosis and harmony.
    • Wemari Village – Hidden deep within the ancient Wemari forest, this protective community is very sceptical – if not downright hostile – to the strange machines that now roam the Novo wilderness. This skepticism means players will have to tread carefully while exploring this beautiful, but deadly part of Novo.
    • The Dijinghala – A new society emerging in the desolate North is quickly turning into a threat to all free peoples of Novo. Hungry to power their insatiable march toward modernity, The Dijinghala are repurposing the machines to scour the planet’s precious natural resources. Of course, players can expect some sticky situations to arise when they inevitably cross paths with these ruthless excavators.

    More of Novo to Explore

To set the stage for this planet-wide conflict, players will gain access to an array of new environments to explore; From snowy mountains, deep oceans, ancient forests, forgotten ruins and even urban areas to mention a few. All of them are packed with fresh creatures and gameplay variation to discover during the 6-8 hour campaign.

And of course, with new parts of Novo to explore comes new secrets to discover of its shadowy past – attentive fans are sure to come away with many new pieces of the long forgotten puzzle that is Novo’s human and non-human history alike.

Planet of Lana II: Children of the Leaf will be released early 2026 and will be available with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate from day one! Wishlist now and go play Lana and Mui’s first adventure in the wait up to their epic continued journey, and follow @PlanetOfLana on social media to stay up to date.

  • Indie darling 1000xResist heads to Xbox and PlayStation on November 4

Heads up, indie game fans: 1000xResist will arrive on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 on November 4. The title, which is already out for PC and Nintendo Switch, will also be available through Xbox Game Pass on the same date. The game is also adding more localization support, bringing Brazilian Portuguese, French and Korean languages, so more players around the world can experience the story.

And the story is the highlight of 1000xResist. This was an indie hit from 2024 that won a lot of fans for its innovative and branching story of a future timeline where the remaining members of humanity live underground in the aftermath of an alien invasion. The project from developer Sunset Visitor also picked up nominations for both the Hugo Awards and Nebula Awards, as well as winning a Peabody last year. Sometimes you’ll want to take award winners with a grain (or a pound) of salt, but the industry and players alike have lauded the game’s sci-fi storytelling chops.

  • Microsoft sneakily drops DLC discounts that come with Xbox Game Pass

After Microsoft decided to jack up the price of its Xbox Game Pass subscriptions to up to $30 a month, it has another unwelcome surprise for members. In a statement provided to multiple outlets like Insider Gaming, a spokesperson for Microsoft confirmed it has removed the discounts for DLC that come with a Game Pass subscription, replacing them by offering points for its Rewards program.

While initial reports discovered the change with the Call of Duty franchise, the Microsoft statement later clarified that this major shift isn’t “specific to any one game and reflects all games and DLC purchases.” To replace the discount, Ultimate subscribers will get 10 percent of their purchase back in Rewards points, while Premium members get five percent, when buying qualifying games from the Game Pass library.

Earlier this month, Microsoft detailed in a post that its goal with Game Pass was to “deliver unmatched value” along with an expansive offering of included games. In the same post, Microsoft announced that it would add 45 more games, along with introducing the $10 price hike. With this latest move, Game Pass subscribers even lose out on the immediate 10 percent discount from their purchases and are forced to accept Game Pass store credit instead. This barrage of news has some members questioning their Xbox Game Pass subscription, but there are still ways to secure the previous rate with pre-paid codes.

  • Is Xbox Game Pass Still the Best Deal in Gaming After the New Price Hike?

Xbox Game Pass is an even better deal for everybody… except for most of its highest-paying subscribers. Game Pass, Microsoft’s gaming subscription service, will offer more games and access to cloud titles for those paying between $5 and $15 on both console and PC. Ultimate-tier subscribers are also getting more, but it comes at a steep cost—a price steep enough that it seems there are fewer real “deals” left in gaming.

In a blog post, Xbox said Game Pass Ultimate will now cost $30 a month, up from $20. With the price hike, Microsoft is offering a fair few upgrades. First is the promise that gamers will be able to play upwards of 75 games available to the service on day one each year. So if you were already planning to play The Outer Worlds 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, or Ninja Gaiden 4 this year, you could save some money before Christmas. Those who pay up also get access to Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics titles. This is the second price hike to Game Pass Ultimate since 2024. Hey, at least those few gamers who already pay for the Fortnite Battle Pass and Xbox Game Pass may save $2.

New Game Pass plans: Essential, Premium, and Ultimate

Xbox also added 45 more games to the service, some of which are accessible if you opt for the two lower subscription tiers. The Standard plan is now labeled “Premium” and still costs the same $15 a month. Core subscriptions are being replaced with “Essential” for $10 per month. Premium and Essential don’t have access to day-one titles, though if you pay $15, you’ll now get access to games like Hogwarts Legacy and some of the paywalled content in games like League of Legends or Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege X. Ultimate, as I said, is $30 a month.

    Every plan gets cloud gaming

You should peruse the entire list of new games to see if there’s anything there you want to play. Otherwise, the big upgrade is now everyone on Game Pass now has access to cloud gaming. Xbox said it’s no longer in beta, and while Ultimate subscribers get priority, every Game Pass subscriber can now stream games at up to 1440p. You’ll be more limited in which games you can play in the cloud if you opt for Essential or Premium plans. Microsoft allows gamers to stream select titles they own on its servers as well.

Is Xbox Game Pass still worth it? Depends on how many games you play.

In many ways, the Ultimate tier is still full of value. The number of quality AAA and excellent indie titles available is enough to keep you going for a full year. But that’s the problem. If you have limited time to game each month, and it takes you many weeks to push through a 30-hour playthrough of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you may end up spending the same amount as if you just bought the game yourself. Gaming on the whole is getting more expensive. Since Nintendo set the score during the Switch 2 launch, the new standard for AAA releases is $70 or—in some cases—$80 even. If you end up with Game Pass Ultimate for six months, you’ll spend $180, the equivalent of two new releases plus Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Hollow Knight: Silksong running on the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X handheld. © Raymond Wong / Gizmodo

How well gamers can justify the new price will be based on how much they care about whatever new titles come to the subscription platform. Microsoft is applying a thick balm to take away the sting of a 50% price hike, but Xbox is promising to supply more of what it was already offering. GeForce Now, Nvidia’s game streaming service for titles you already own, lets you stream up to 4K at their $20-per-month tier. Nvidia just updated its service to enable better streaming quality and a higher-end GPU available for some titles. Having used both Game Pass and GeForce Now for cloud gaming, the latter is certainly a better option.

Let’s also consider what games will be out on Xbox next year. There’s High on Life 2 confirmed as a day-one title already, but other major releases like 007: First Light won’t be on Game Pass at all. Then there’s the elephant in the room in the form of Grand Theft Auto VI. I’ve spoken with analysts who fully expect the game to cost $100 at launch. If the game hopes to make the promised $3 billion in sales in the first year, then it’s certainly going to stay away from Game Pass. GTA VI could open the floodgates for even more ultra-expensive games. Xbox itself promised to boost game prices to $80 before rolling that back. When five-year-old Xbox consoles now cost more than ever after two consecutive price hikes—pushing a base Xbox Series X to $650—all future “deals” will look like recreations of the prices we once took for granted.

  • Updates to Xbox Game Pass: Introducing Essential, Premium, and Ultimate Plans – Xbox Wire

Our goal with Game Pass has been clear: deliver unmatched value, benefits, and a deep library of games for our players. Since launching in 2017, we’ve steadily grown our subscriber and creator satisfaction – and today, creator participation and player engagement in Game Pass are at an all-time high. But we have the opportunity for Game Pass to help more players find the creators and games they love.

We know not everyone wants the same thing in their Xbox experience, so we’re evolving Game Pass to offer more flexibility, choice, and value to all players, whether you love day one releases, discovering hidden gems, or playing across multiple devices and screens and across Xbox consoles, Xbox on PC, and Xbox Cloud.

Starting today, we’re introducing three upgraded Game Pass plans based on how players play: Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. Each includes expanded game libraries, including PC titles, unlimited cloud gaming, in-game benefits (including Riot Games titles), and a revamped Rewards with Xbox experience. Today’s Game Pass Core subscribers will automatically move to Essential, Standard subscribers will transition to Premium, and Ultimate subscribers will remain in the Ultimate plan.

It’s all a part of our commitment to meet players where they are, so you can choose what works best for you, no matter how or where you love to play.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Just Got Its Biggest Upgrade Yet

Ultimate has been upgraded for players who want the best of everything. We’re rolling out our most expansive upgrade yet, including more day one games than ever before, Fortnite Crew & Ubisoft+ Classics for the first time ever, enhanced Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming quality up to 1440p, Rewards with Xbox, and more. Now players can have it all.

  • Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Diablo IV, Starfield And More Missing From Game Pass’ Newest Tier

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Diablo IV, Starfield And More Missing From Game Pass’ Newest Tier

Microsoft has officially rolled out Game Pass Standard, the Netflix-like subscription service’s new middle tier, and with it revealed which games will and won’t be included at the start. Among those missing are Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Diablo IV, and some other notable blockbusters like Starfield.

Announced earlier this summer, Game Pass Standard is $15 a month and includes access to online multiplayer as well as a library of hundreds of games that can be downloaded and played on-demand. The big difference between Game Pass Standard and Game Pass Ultimate, the now $20 a month version, is that the former won’t include certain day-one additions to the library until up to 12 months later or even longer in some cases. The most notable example is Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which will only be part of Game Pass Ultimate and Game Pass PC when it launches on October 25.

But a list of the existing libraries for each tier also reveals other discrepancies for games that already came to the service. Modern Warfare 3, added last month, is notably absent. As is Diablo IV, added in the spring with a new expansion, Vessel of Hatred, coming October 8. Valorant, Riot Games’ hero shooter that recently came to console, is free-to-play but locks certain characters behind a paywall. The Game Pass version that unlocks them all for free is part of Ultimate but not Standard.

There are some smaller day-and-date games missing as well. Flintlock, the colonial-era Soulslike, came to Game Pass in July but isn’t included in Standard’s library. Neither is Another Crab’s Treasure, the cartoony Soulslike that joined in April. Still Wakes The Deep, the horror walking sim that arrived in June, is also absent. It seems like a lot of recent day-one Game Pass releases, including Microsoft’s own Age of Mythology Retold, won’t be hitting Standard anytime soon, despite arriving on the service before the split was official. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II isn’t there either, nor Starfield which came out over a year ago.

When will we see these games and others make it to the middle tier? That’s the most confusing part of all. For now there doesn’t seem to be one standard approach, with all releases being staggered by the same number of months. Even for Microsoft’s own first-party releases, it seems like their arrival on Standard will happens when it happens. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, for example, might not hit Game Pass Standard until it first arrives on PS5 in the spring.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

  • Game Pass Standard is now available on Xbox

Game Pass Standard is now available on Xbox

The Xbox Game Pass Standard plan is starting today. Microsoft announced a revamp to its Game Pass subscription plans , introducing the Standard option alongside a price increase for the Ultimate tier. The Standard plan costs $15 a month, while Ultimate will run you $20 a month.

The Standard subscription tier will offer the essential features of the Game Pass program: online multiplayer gaming, access to a large library of games, and discounts on select game purchases. The big difference between Standard and Ultimate is that Standard plan members will not be able to play some blockbuster releases, such as and , on day one. The wait time on Standard varies by title, but can last up to or longer than 12 months. Ultimate plans also include membership to EA Play and access to Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Xbox has been struggling to compete with PlayStation in this console generation. That’s partially due to hardware differences: Microsoft offered to its console lineup this summer whereas Sony managed to for the announcement of its expensive new . But the Game Pass plan has also been struggling to generate continued revenue for Microsoft, with just subscribers reported in February.

The Buck Stops With Phil Spencer, 1000xRESIST Is A Must-Play, And More Gaming Opinions For The Week

    Image: Bethesda Softworks

Earlier this week, Xbox announced that it would be shuttering several studios it had attained as part of its $7.5 billion purchase of Bethesda, including Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog Games, and Roundhouse Studios, the last of which is being absorbed into another team. Collectively, the studios’ produced games like Dishonored, Prey, Redfall, Mighty Doom, Hi-Fi Rush, and more. These studios, and some of the more innovative titles that they developed, seemed at one point to be the future of Xbox’s floundering brand. After a downturn in many of Xbox’s large key franchises due to mismanagement, the shifting priorities of its audience, and the Xbox’s dwindling image across the world, titles like the ones these teams were developing seemed like the start of a promising new era for Xbox, one that might be marked by more creative, sustainably made games that weren’t designed to bleed its audience dry. – Moises Taveras Read More

  • Starfield’s Launch Set Record for Game Pass

Starfield’s Launch Set Record for Game Pass

Starfield has been a big success for Bethesda and Microsoft. Not only was it the best-selling game in the US for September, but it’s also been a significant boon for Game Pass. According to Microsoft, the day of Starfield’s launch set a record for the highest number of new Game Pass subscribers.

Starfield’s launch set a record for new Game Pass subscribers

Microsoft recently held its 2024 first-quarter earnings call. The hour-long conference covered a lot of ground, including the recent completion of Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard buyout. However, it also touched on the success of Bethesda sci-fi RPG. This includes its launch day setting a red for Game Pass subscribers and Starfield crossing a massive sales milestone.

“We released Starfield this quarter to broad acclaim,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. More than 11 million people have played the game to date. Nearly half of hours played have been on PC, and on launch day, we set a record for the most Game Pass subscriptions added on a single day ever.”

The executive also reported that Game Pass saw more hours played than ever before. However, he did not specify precisely how many. He added that Minecraft surpassed 300 million units. Nadella also mentioned Microsoft’s strong holiday lineup featuring Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and Forza Motorsport.

Yesterday also saw Microsoft publish its 2024 Q1 earnings report. The company overall saw a 27% increase in net income. Gaming revenue grew by 9%, with Xbox content and services rising by 13%. However, Xbox consoles also experienced a dip in revenue, falling by 8%. Still, the beginning of 2024’s fiscal year has been good overall for Microsoft and its gaming division.
