No Hard Feelings on Netflix, Saw X, and every new movie to watch at home this weekend

    [ad_1]

Happy Friday, Polygon readers! Each week, we round up the most notable releases to streaming and video rental, highlighting the biggest and best new movies for you to watch at home.

No Hard Feelings, the coming-of-age sex comedy starring Jennifer Lawrence, arrives on Netflix this week alongside Old Dads, the directorial debut of comedian Bill Burr. The action comedy-drama Polite Society comes to Prime along with the Chinese World War II thriller Hidden Blade starring Tony Leung, while the horor thriller Cobweb featuring Antony Starr (The Boys) lands on Hulu. There’s plenty of new films available to rent as well this week, like Saw X; the latest installment in the long-running horror franchise starring Tobin Bell, and more.

Here’s everything new to watch this weekend!

    New on Netflix

    No Hard Feelings

Where to watch: Available to stream on Netflix

    Photo: Macall Polay/Sony Pictures Entertainment

    Genre: Comedy
    Run time: 1h 43m
    Director: Gene Stupnitsky
Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Andrew Barth Feldman, Laura Benanti

Jennifer Lawrence stars in this raunchy and endearing comedy as Maddie, a young woman struggling between her job as an Uber driver and a part-time bartender to pay off the house she inherited from her late mother. After her car is towed, Maddie is presented with the opportunity of a lifetime: Seduce Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman), the college-bound son of a wealthy couple on their behalf, in exchange for a brand new set of wheels. Simple enough, right? Yeah, that’s what Maddie thought too.

    From our review,

Like most funny stories, No Hard Feelings seems like a bad idea at first. It’s a movie in which Jennifer Lawrence, in her first lead role in a full-on comedy, spends approximately 103 minutes trying to seduce a socially awkward 19-year-old for financial gain. It’s also wildly funny, and a great reminder of how good J-Law is at lighting up a screen.

    Old Dads

Where to watch: Available to stream on Netflix

(L-R) Bill Burr as Jack, Bokeem Woodbine as Mike, Bobby Cannavale as Connor on the set of Old Dads.

    Photo: Michael Moriatis/Netflix

    Genre: Comedy
    Run time: 1h 44m
    Director: Bill Burr
Cast: Bill Burr, Bokeem Woodbine, Bobby Cannavale

Three old friends become fathers later in life, only to be confronted with the generational annoyances that come with interacting with anyone born (or anything created) after the 1980s. Old Dads is Bill Burr’s directorial feature debut and shares a co-writing credit with writer-producer Ben Tishler.

    New on Hulu

    Cobweb

Where to watch: Available to stream on Hulu

Lizzy Caplan holds a muffin tin with candles on it while smiling creepily in Cobweb.

    Image: Lionsgate

    Genre: Horror thriller
    Run time: 1h 28m
    Director: Samuel Bodin
Cast: Lizzy Caplan, Woody Norman, Antony Starr

This horror-thriller from the creator of the scariest show on Netflix follows Peter (Woody Norman), a troubled young boy who — after hearing mysterious knocking sounds coming from the walls of his home — attempts to seek help in unearthing a terrible secret hidden from him by his parents.

    From our review,

Bodin attempts to invoke dread with long shots of the film’s few distinctive set elements — the aforementioned pumpkin patch, or an old grandfather clock and icebox that each hide a hidden passage — but he doesn’t do much to render those images as something powerful or sinister. It’s as if Cobweb is set in a haunted house where nothing actually happened long ago, even as it hides a girl’s voice in its walls.

    New on Prime Video

    Polite Society

Where to watch: Available to stream on Prime Video

Ria, a Pakistani teenager in a traditional green and gold dance outfit, holds her arms out in a fighting stance.

    Photo: Parisa Taghizadeh/Focus Features

    Genre: Action comedy-drama
    Run time: 1h 44m
    Director: Nida Manzoor
    Cast: Priya Kansara, Ritu Arya

When a teenage girl on her path to being a stuntwoman learns that her sister is betrothed to a man, she suspects the man and his mother are up to no good. So she does the only thing you can in such a situation: try to sabotage the relationship and beat the shit out of the guy in the process.

Polite Society sounds like an uproarious fun time, and it’s one of the movies I’ve most looked forward to catching on streaming after a brief limited U.S. run. After you see it, make sure to read this interview with the director about Polite Society’s varied influences.

    Hidden Blade

Where to watch: Available to stream on Prime Video

(L-R) Wang Yibo, Tony Leung, Chengpeng Dong sitting across a table from an unseen man in Hidden Blade.

    Image: Well Go USA Entertainment

    Genre: Period espionage thriller
    Run time: 2h 8m
    Director: Cheng Er
Cast: Tony Leung, Wang Yibo, Zhou Xun

This Chinese World War II thriller stars the incredible Tony Leung as the Director of Shanghai’s Political Security Department, who finds himself in the middle of a time of great upheaval. The Japanese occupation is in its dying embers, China’s Communist Party is on the rise, and Leung’s character finds himself caught in the middle of it all. It’s a tense, gorgeous, occasionally opaque thriller with a great leading performance by one of the finest actors of his generation.

    Silver Dollar Road

Where to watch: Available to stream on Prime Video

Letitia Wright (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Small Axe) stars in this new Western as a freedwoman who impersonates a man in a plot to claim a gold mine. Her journey brings her face-to-face with the legendary outlaw Tommy Walsh (Jamie Bell), whom she holds captive after her stagecoach is ambushed by a gang of marauding thieves and killers. Surrounded also features the final performance by the late Michael K. Williams, who completed filming prior to his death in 2021.

    New on Apple TV Plus

    The Pigeon Tunnel

Where to watch: Available to stream on Apple TV

John le Carré sitting in a chair next to a set of eggs on a wooden table in The Pigeon Tunnel.

    Image: Apple TV Plus

    Genre: Documentary
    Run time: 1h 32m
    Director: Errol Morris
    Cast: John le Carré

John le Carré is a personal favorite author for me. His spy novels are notable for their groundedness — as a former spy himself, he had a lot to draw from — but also for their cynicism towards the heartlessness of that particular trade. Esteemed documentarian Errol Morris (The Thin Blue Line) turns his camera towards the life of the late, great le Carré, one of the finest and most important authors of the 20th century.

    New on Peacock

    Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken

Tobin Bell reprises his role as the machiavellian Jigsaw killer in the 10th installment of the long running Saw horror franchise. A prequel set between the events of the original film and 2005’s Saw II, Saw X follows John Kramer as he travels to Mexico to undergo an experimental treatment in order to cure his cancer. When he realizes that the entire program is a total scam, John enlists the help of his apprentice Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) to orchestrate a series of elaborate “games” in order to exact his own twisted brand of justice.

    Lynch/Oz

Elon Musk Frantically Emails Employees to ‘Fix’ Livestream: Report | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Technical difficulties continue to plague the livestream feature on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, after a live video with the company’s owner, Elon Musk, froze as the billionaire visited Eagle Pass at the U.S.-Mexico border.

On Thursday, Musk was attempting to report live from the scene at the border while donning sunglasses and a large, black cowboy hat.

“They are being overwhelmed by unprecedented numbers – just hit an all-time high and still growing,” Musk said of the migrants ahead of his trip. “Am going to visit Eagle Pass later this week to see what’s going on for myself.”

The video lasted about four minutes before the stream completely froze with about five million X users tuned in.

“I was a bit worried so many people might go on it that it crashes,” Musk said in the short clip.

According to New York Times reporter Ryan Mac, Musk then frantically sent a three-word email to all employees at X that read: “Please fix this.”

Musk restarted the livestream a few minutes later; it ran for about 13 minutes.

X’s live-streaming capabilities haven’t worked well in the past. When testing Twitter’s old technology in May on his profile, even Musk commented on the low quality and pixelation.

“We’re just testing the live video feature so we can see if it works, and we can modify it accordingly,” he said during the stream at the time.

X did not immediately respond to Entepreneur’s request for comment.

  • 100 Jewish leaders call out Elon Musk for antisemitism on X, formerly Twitter:

100 Jewish leaders call out Elon Musk for antisemitism on X, formerly Twitter:

    [ad_1]

A group of 100 Jewish leaders, including some prominent rabbis and academics, released a public letter criticizing X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, and its owner Elon Musk for enabling a “new stage of antisemetic discourse.”

According to the letter, the group’s concerns began with Musk’s takeover of the site in October 2022. Musk has been criticized for allowing previously banned users back onto the platform, including Andrew TateKanye West and some notorious neo-Nazi figures, and for reducing content moderation on the site. Musk — who has said he wants to promote “free speech” — has also floated the idea of removing the site’s “block” feature

Musk has also shared multiple posts that the group described as antisemitic, and they noted he has liked or platformed other such comments.

Recently, Musk threatened to sue the Anti-Defamation League, a nonprofit organization that fights antisemitism and extremism, blaming its criticism of hate speech on the platform for X’s slumping ad sales. The letter said Musk targeted the ADL “as a very clear stand-in for antisemitic representation of Jewish power.”

“We have watched in horror as a new stage in antisemitic discourse has spread like wildfire on one of America’s largest social media networks,” the letter says. “All of this has been facilitated and enabled by its owner: Elon Musk. We are speaking of course of X (formerly Twitter), which since his takeover has become a breeding ground for some of the most dangerous antisemitic discourse in America. It has made fringe figures mainstream, spread conspiracy theories that endanger Jews, reinstated neo-Nazis and other antisemites, and destroyed the content moderation that once kept things like Holocaust denial and hate speech minimized.”

The letter also cited examples of Musk “engaging in antisemitic conspiracy theories.” That behavior, the letter said, has meant that “antisemitic discourse has doubled on X” — and possibly increased even further due to recent comments from Musk.

    Elon Musk addresses Twitter controversies

    01:59

In a statement to CBS News, the group behind the letter said that Musk’s “antisemitism is far more dangerous than most people know, and we are here to insist that it be portrayed as the urgent danger it is.”

In 2022, researchers from Montclair State University found an “immediate, visible, and measurable spike” in “vulgar and hostile” rhetoric aimed at people based on their race, religion, ethnicity and orientation in the 12 hours after Musk took over the site. Data from the Center for Countering Digital Hate released in December 2022 showed slurs against Black people tripled the 2022 average after Musk’s takeover, while slurs against members of the LGBTQ+ community rose by 58%.

“In short, X has become a breeding ground for antisemitism and represents one of the largest dangers to Jews in years. If something does not change, we know what will happen: hate speech and radicalization are always the precursor to violence,” the letter said.

The letter included several calls to action, including asking organizations to end their relationships with Musk’s various companies, including Tesla and SpaceX. The letter also urged large advertisers stop spending money to advertise on X, and that Google and Apple remove the app from their app stores.

“Elon Musk has shown a refusal to back down from the danger he poses to Jews and other minorities and vulnerable communities. Appealing to him directly, as the ADL and others have, has been an abject failure,” the letter said. “Outside pressure that hits him where it hurts is the only effective measure. Not doing so will mean the further spread of extremism and antisemitism. Those don’t just threaten Jews: they threaten a free society and all those affected by the conspiracy theories tied to antisemitism.”

CBS News reached out to X for comment and received an automatic message reading: “Busy now, please check back later.” In July, Musk posted that press and media inquiries would receive such messages in an “infinite loop” of non-answers. It’s a change from the previous auto-reply, which responded to such inquiries with a poop emoji.

Tucker Carlson Says He’s ‘Grateful’ For Elon Musk’s Swift Call To His Ex-Fox Producer

    [ad_1]

Tucker Carlson said that he’ll “never stop being grateful” for Elon Musk’s quick response to Fox News letting his executive producer go from the network in April.

The ex-Fox News host, who got canned by the network along with former “Tucker Carlson Tonight” executive producer Justin Wells, told Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy this week that the network dropped Wells “within four minutes” of his own surprise firing.

“He really didn’t do anything wrong. He was the best producer in all of television and everyone knew it,” declared Carlson during an interview for his X (formerly Twitter) show.

“And Fox has a lot of nice people, a lot of very incompetent people obviously running it. And he was one of the only competent people in the whole business but they fired him, too.”

Carlson went on to note that “within an hour” of the firing Musk called up Wells.

“And [he] said, ‘You should come to Twitter,’ so I’ll never stop being grateful for that,” the host said.

“We don’t work for Elon or anything, but we’re using the site just like everyone else uses it, which is a platform that’s not censored. And I’m super grateful for that.”

Musk has previously stated that he doesn’t have a deal “of any kind whatsoever” with the host, who announced that he’d bring a show to X in May.

He noted in May that Carlson would be “subject to the same rules & rewards of all content creators.” The host has since peddled conspiracy theories on Musk’s platform.

Elsewhere in the interview, Carlson – who has been accused of misogyny – directed sexist remarks at the company as one “run by fearful women” and proclaimed that he “got along with everybody” before his firing.

HuffPost didn’t immediately hear back from Fox News following a request for comment.

Head to the 43:06 mark in the clip below for the host’s comments on Wells.

  • What Elon Musk Learned from Napoleon About Leadership | Entrepreneur

What Elon Musk Learned from Napoleon About Leadership | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Elon Musk is a self-proclaimed history buff.

“He likes military history,” Walter Isaacson, the author of a much-anticipated Musk biography, told Axios. “He believes there are lessons that apply to corporate life.”

One of his inspirations was Napoleon Bonaparte, the French military genius who rose to power during the French Revolution and became Emperor of France.

Isaacson points to one leadership strategy Musk learned from reading about Bonaparte.

“He believes that wherever Napoleon was, that’s where his armies would do best. So he liked to show up late at night on the assembly lines at Tesla and SpaceX,” Isaacson said.

    Sharing the battlefield

For example, while engineers were building a Starship booster at the SpaceX launch site in Boca Chica, Texas, Musk hung around the area for an hour, observing.

“If they see their general on the battlefield, they will be more motivated,” Musk told Isaacson.

This may also explain why Musk spends so much time in the ‘X’ offices. According to an article in the BBC, Musk has installed beds in Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters so that he can sleep there.

According to employee Dolly Singh, Musk slept on the office floor at SpaceX.

“Elon wants to live in a world where he works 80 hours a week,” she said. “It’s OK for him to say, ‘I expect you to work as hard as me,’ because he’s not phoning it in from the beach, he’s sleeping in a sleeping bag on the factory floor.”

    About the new biography

The intimate, new biography entitled Elon Musk will drop on September 12. Isaacson, who also wrote bestselling biographies of Steve Jobs and Leonardo da Vinci, spent two years shadowing Musk. He was given unprecedented access, attending meetings with him and joining him for walks around his factories. He also spent hours interviewing him, his family, friends, coworkers, and adversaries.

    About the cage match

Oh, and speaking of Musk’s adversaries, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is undoubtedly one, as evidenced by all the talk about a cage match between the two billionaires.

But Isaacson told Axios he thinks talk of Zuckerberg fighting Musk in a cage match “is completely ridiculous.”

A few days ago, he shared a screenshot of a text exchange between Musk and Zuckerberg, making the fight seem like it won’t happen anytime soon.

‘X’ Is Auctioning Off Hundreds of Twitter Office Items | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Elon Musk rebranded Twitter as “X” last month, and now the company wants to shed its old blue feathers and embrace its slick, new identity as X.

In an epic garage sale to cleanse the San Franciso HQ of all Twitterverse memories, X CEO Musk and company are auctioning off 584 lots online.

The inventory includes a Bird Cage with a Hanging Sofa (Daybed) Swing, a Twitter Bird Wood Coffee Table, and Neon “@” and “#” Marquee Light Signs.

Not all items are Twitter related. For example, there’s a large oil painting of Ellen Degeneres’ 2014 Oscar selfie, a reconstructed wood barn from Montana, and an image of Barack Obama hugging Michelle Obama entitled “Four More Years.”

Most wares up for auction are your typical office furniture and kitchen appliance variety (although not every office has a beer dispenser). But there is also an unusual amount of musical equipment, making the office seems more like a former recording studio than a social media platform. Interested shoppers will find multiple acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards, drums, and amps. There is also a DJ booth.

Twitter has auctioned its stuff before

This is not Musk’s first auction rodeo. A few months after he purchased Twitter, he revamped its offices for what he called “Twitter 2.0,” auctioning hundreds of items such as a blue bird statue.

Some of those items appear not to have sold the first time around, including the @ marquee sign.

    How to bid

The “Twitter Rebranding” auction is helmed by Heritage Global Partners (HGP). It starts on September 12, 2023, at 7 am PT and ends on September 14 at 9 am PT.

Fired Over Tweets? Elon Musk Says He’ll Fund Your Legal Fees | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Elon Musk has offered to cover the legal expenses for individuals who have experienced workplace discrimination due to their activity on the platform X (formerly Twitter).

“If you were unfairly treated by your employer due to posting or liking something on this platform, we will fund your legal bill,” Musk posted on X Saturday evening.

The proposition comes without any financial constraints, with Musk saying there is “no limit,” and X intends to pursue the boards of directors of these companies as well, as stated in messages shared on the platform on Saturday night.

The post, which has been viewed by upwards of 115 million users, garnered a slew of users chiming in — both with anecdotes about workplace discrimination in relation to the platform as well as criticism.

“I’m afraid that Elon may have grossly underestimated the number of victims and the cost of this policy,” one user wrote.

Others welcomed the initiative with praise, calling it “beyond awesome” and saying “This is everything.

The tech CEO acquired Twitter for $44 billion in October 2022 and subsequently rebranded it as X in July 2023.

Musk’s behavior on X often pushes the limits of professionalism, but this new policy is in contrast to some of his own company’s past actions. The tech mogul has taken jabs at Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, made remarks against former employees and critics, and suspended journalists.

“There are many independent journalists/creators who got banned from Twitter — me for years — who depended on this platform to fund their independent work and reporting,” one user replied to Musk’s Saturday post.

The billionaire has also used his app to publicly criticize his own employees.

In March, Musk received backlash when he ridiculed former senior director Halli Thorleifsson after the employee sought clarity on their employment status at the company.

Since Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, researchers have found that there has been a significant increase in hateful, violent, and inaccurate posts, Bloomberg reported in July.

In Musk’s first three months as CEO alone, a Center of Countering Digital Hate study found that the frequency of daily tweets containing derogatory language targeting Black Americans more than tripled. From October to March, tweets using slurs and derogatory language against the LGBTQ+ community increased by 119% per the Center of Countering Digital Hate. Over 30% of U.S. adults who used Twitter between March and May encountered content they deemed detrimental to society, according to a report by the USC Marshall Neely Social Media Index.

“This is what defending freedom of speech looks like,” Musk added to his initial post on Saturday.

As for the legal fee proposition, neither Musk nor X has revealed details on the protocol or whether the CEO will honor his statement made on Saturday night.

Entrepreneur is not asking X for comment since the company is now replying to media inquiries with the poop emoji.

‘X’ Sign Installation On Twitter Building Sparks Investigation In San Francisco

    [ad_1]

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The city of San Francisco has opened a complaint and launched an investigation into a giant “X” sign that was installed Friday on top of the downtown building formerly known as Twitter headquarters as owner Elon Musk continues his rebrand of the social media platform.

City officials say replacing letters or symbols on buildings, or erecting a sign on top of one, requires a permit for design and safety reasons.

The X appeared after San Francisco police stopped workers on Monday from removing the brand’s iconic bird and logo from the side of the building, saying they hadn’t taped off the sidewalk to keep pedestrians safe if anything fell.

Any replacement letters or symbols would require a permit to ensure “consistency with the historic nature of the building” and to make sure additions are safely attached to the sign, Patrick Hannan, spokesperson for the Department of Building Inspection said earlier this week.

Erecting a sign on top of a building also requires a permit, Hannan said Friday.

“Planning review and approval is also necessary for the installation of this sign. The city is opening a complaint and initiating an investigation,” he said in an email.

Musk unveiled a new “X” logo to replace Twitter’s famous blue bird as he remakes the social media platform he bought for $44 billion last year. The X started appearing at the top of the desktop version of Twitter on Monday.

Musk, who is also CEO of Tesla, has long been fascinated with the letter X and had already renamed Twitter’s corporate name to X Corp. after he bought it in October. One of his children is called “X.” The child’s actual name is a collection of letters and symbols.

On Friday afternoon, a worker on a lift machine made adjustments to the sign and then left.

Court Finds Ed Sheeran Did Not Violate Copyright With Song ‘I Wish I Were An Oscar Mayer Wiener’

    [ad_1]

NEW YORK—Concluding a protracted legal battle in which the popular singer-songwriter stood accused of plagiarism, a federal jury found Thursday that singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran did not infringe upon anyone’s intellectual property with his song “I Wish I Were An Oscar Mayer Wiener.” “What you need to understand is that pop songs are harmonically and lyrically very simple, so yes, my song may use a similar chord progression and the exact same lyrics as a famous jingle used to sell hot dogs, but that doesn’t make it a copyright violation,” said Sheeran, who testified in his own defense, telling the Manhattan courtroom that ruling in favor of the plaintiff, processed meat purveyor Oscar Mayer, would have a chilling effect on artistic expressions of wanting to be an Oscar Mayer wiener. “It’s all part of the folk music process. Long before anyone thought of advertising hot dogs on television, Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie sang of how an Oscar Mayer wiener is what they’d truly like to be, and you can trace this through to the Beatles and Bob Marley, who each in their own way sang about how, if they were Oscar Mayer wieners, everyone would be in love with them. The theme of envying an Oscar Meyer wiener continues today, especially in hip-hop, and will be here long after we’re gone.” Shortly after the verdict was read, Sheeran reportedly attended a ceremony at which multiplatinum certification was awarded to his album My Bologna Has A First Name.
