Ellie Downie has made the decision to retire from gymnastics
Ellie Downie has announced her retirement from gymnastics in order to “prioritise her mental health and happiness”.
In a statement released on social media she said: “With a heavy heart and an array of emotions, today is the day I announce my retirement from gymnastics!
“To say it has been a difficult decision is a massive understatement, but after a really tough last few years, I’ve made the decision to prioritise my mental health and happiness.
“Gymnastics has been my life for as long as I can remember and I am proud of everything I was fortunate enough to achieve in the sport.
“Competing and winning medals for Great Britain has meant everything and more to me and I’ll miss it enormously.”
The 23-year-old won 12 medals during her senior career, including six silver medals at the European Championships and two bronze medals at the World Championships.
She also finished 13th in the all-round at the 2016 Olympics despite landing on her head during a tumbling pass on floor.

TMZ Sports confirmed late Wednesday afternoon that the rumors circulating about the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund having already completed a purchase of the WWE are false.

Sportscaster Jon Alba said on Twitter that he was told by a “high-ranking WWE source” that reports about the sale being finalized are “completely false.”
WWE has not officially made a statement.

The world of the WWE this week has proven to be more chaotic than a Friday Night SmackDown show as rumors swirl that the company may soon be (or secretly has been) sold to a Saudi Arabian company amid the departure of current Co-CEO and Chairwoman Stephanie McMahon.
Earlier this week, it was announced that former CEO Vince McMahon would be making a comeback to rejoin the WWE board alongside former co-presidents and directors Michelle Wilson and George Barrios, meaning that two people currently on the board would have to exit in order for this to happen.
McMahon had indicated in a statement to ESPN that he is eyeing a sale of the company, as he is the majority shareholder.
The first domino to fall? His own daughter, Stephanie McMahon, who had been serving as co-CEO alongside Kick Kahn since her father’s July 2022 retirement.
McMahon wrote on social media that she would be leaving her role as chairwoman and co-CEO on Tuesday, noting that upon her departure she is “confident WWE is in the perfect place to continue to provide unparalleled creative content and drive maximum value for shareholders.”

Soon after she penned her goodbye, Twitter went wild with rumblings that McMahon had planned to sell the company to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which would make the company private, per reports from Deadspin and wrestling outlet BodySlam.net.
A report earlier this week from Front Office Sports claimed that the PIF had been eyeing a purchase of the WWE, with some “sources” even seeming to indicate that the deal was already done.

WWE has had programming in Saudi Arabia since 2014 and started televising special events there in 2018 through its partnership with the Saudi General Entertainment Authority.
The Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund is also the same company that owns the LIV Golf league.
If the deal between the PIF and the WWE were to go through, it would raise questions about certain facets of the WWE league — namely the Women’s Wrestling department and the country’s laws about what women are permitted to wear in public.
Neither the WWE nor its executives had publicly confirmed or denied the rumors as of Wednesday afternoon.

England’s Vitality Roses made an impressive start to 2023 by seeing off rivals Jamaica with a ruthless 73-52 display at Manchester’s AO Arena on Wednesday.
England began the first of their three-match series by dismantling the Commonwealth Games silver medallists in the final quarter to seal a fabulous victory.
Head coach Jess Thirlby admitted the matches against Jamaica are all geared towards the Netball World Cup this summer.
She told BBC Sport: “It’s definitely about the longer-term but everything we do, you have to have intent to do both. Part of learning how to be better at the World Cup is learning how to win these games. We’ve ticked off so many new things there.
“World Cup always has to be our destination but we want to win as well.”

The Sunshine Girls made a storming start, producing neat court transition through to goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler for a 19-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Thirlby’s side worked hard in a fast-paced encounter, with Jo Harten and Helen Housby gelling neatly together to enable England to stay in contention.
Jamaica’s lead was cut to three goals by half-time following another lively quarter in which they began to show a few signs of nerves.
With the visitors losing momentum, the Roses took advantage to close the gap to 34-31.
The tide turned England’s way midway through the third quarter with the home side moving ahead and building a slight cushion, leading 49-47 in a roller-coaster ride heading into the final quarter.
The Roses went on to show all their experience to run away with the contest in the last 15 minutes.
Natalie Metcalf, Harten and Housby toyed with the Jamaican defence to add to their tally and close out an emphatic win between the teams who are ranked third and fourth in the world, respectively.
What’s next?
The teams travel down south to the Copper Box Arena in London for back-to-back games on January 14 and 15.
The series forms part of the Roses’ preparations for July’s World Cup in South Africa – live on Sky Sports.

Fallon Sherrock has confirmed her place in the Final Stage at UK Q-School
Fallon Sherrock has made it through to the Final Stage at UK Q-School following a brilliant run in Milton Keynes on Wednesday.
The Women’s World Matchplay winner joins 104 players in qualifying for the final stage, which, supplemented by the 24 players who were automatically qualified, means that a total of 128 players will compete for the 13 available Tour Cards from Thursday.
Sherrock, who made history by becoming the first woman ever to win a match at the PDC World Darts Championship in 2019, is pleased with her progress but is also aware of the hard work ahead to earn her Tour Card.
She said on Twitter: “Very pleased with my game the past 3 days, especially today – but nothing won yet as the hard work starts tomorrow.
“But win or lose I’m just pleased to be part of QS and playing my game the best I can. Good luck and well done to everyone else who plays tomorrow.”
Sherrock says the ‘hard work’ starts on Thursday when she will look to earn a PDC Tour Card
Sherrock joins the likes of Christian Perez, Jamie Lewis, Josh Payne, Andy Hamilton, Nick Kenny, former UK Open runner-up Corey Cadby and Arron Monk in managing to secure a spot for the remainder of Q-School.
Meanwhile, Jelle Klaasen, Nico Kurz, Diogo Portela and Ronny Huybrechts will feature in the final stage at European Q-School.

The remaining 24 Tour Cards will be allocated to players from the UK and European Q-School Final Stage Orders of Merit, and split on a pro-rata basis of total participants in each region.
Any ties in the Q-School Orders of Merit will be split as follows based on all match results: Leg Difference, Legs Won, then DartConnect average. If players still cannot be split, a play-off would be organised.

U.S. stocks advanced Friday, with the Dow rising 500 points, as monthly Labor Department data showed the pace of job creation cooled in December while wage gains slowed, fueling hopes that the Federal Reserve’s interest rate hikes are starting to have the desired effect.

After several sessions of choppy trade stocks finished lower on Thursday. However, thanks to Friday’s strong rebound, the S&P 500 is on track to finish the week in the green after four consecutive weekly declines.
What’s driving markets
Stock-market bulls cheered Friday’s jobs report, which showed that the pace of job creation and wage growth cooled last month, contradicting labor-market data released earlier in the week.
The December nonfarm payrolls report showed 223,000 jobs were created in December, above expectations for 200,000 new jobs, though the pace of job creation slowed from 256,000 during November. Wages grew by just 0.3% in December, down from 0.4% a month earlier.

While stocks advanced in the wake of the data, it seems the labor market has continued to confound expectations for an imminent recession, market analysts said. While the pace of wage growth has slowed slightly, workers continued to command higher pay, even if wages have lagged headline inflation.
“This is not going to push the Fed off its agenda one iota,” said Brad Conger, deputy chief investment officer at Hirtle, Callaghan & Co., in commentary about Friday’s data.
Numerous Fed officials have made clear that they want to see unemployment climb in order to help suppress inflation and engineer a return to the Fed’s 2% target. Senior Fed officials expect unemployment to rise by nearly a percentage point in 2023, according to projections released in December.
“The release was a win-win from the Fed’s perspective, as it signaled that wage inflation is moderating while job growth remains steady,” said Peter Essele, Head of Portfolio Management, Commonwealth Financial Network. “Coupled with the fact that headline inflation continues to move in the right direction, there’s a growing chance the Fed may be able to navigate a soft landing in the economy. If it meets its target, 2023 could be one of the best years for markets given the amount of negative investor sentiment currently weighing on prices.”
The S&P 500 index is down more than 19% from its 52-week high after the Fed raised interest rates by 4.25 percentage points in 2022 in an attempt to crush inflation that hit a four-decade high of 9.1% in June, according to the consumer-price index.
Jobs data released earlier in the week painted a picture of a labor market that had remained robust despite the Fed’s best efforts, and it’s not clear whether Friday’s data have meaningfully changed this perception, market strategists said.
JOLTS data released Tuesday showed more than 10 million jobs remained open. Analysts noted that the ADP private sector employment report released on Thursday was stronger than expected, which triggered a selloff in stocks.
Later Friday morning in New York, the ISM services sector index for December turned negative for the first time since May 2020, indicating a slowdown in the all-important services sector. The ISM services index slowed to 49.6% in December from 56.5%, below forecast.
The drumbeat of cautious Fedspeak continued on Friday, with Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook saying that inflation “remains far too high, despite some encouraging signs lately.” The pace of inflation has cooled in recent months, according to the consumer-price index.
Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said on CNBC Friday that the December jobs data “doesn’t really change my outlook at all.”
A number of other Fed speakers are expected Friday, including Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin at 12:15 p.m. and Kansas City Fed President Esther George at 1 p.m.

Former CEO Vince McMahon plans to return to the WWE, but only to sell the business he turned into a global entertainment brand.
The Wall Street Journal reports that McMahon — still WWE‘s majority stockholder — indicated on Thursday that “he is electing himself and two former co-presidents and directors, Michelle Wilson and George Barrios, to the board.” Three of the current directors will reportedly have to leave their positions to make room.
McMahon, age 77, retired in the summer of 2022 amid sexual misconduct allegations. He also allegedly used his own money for $19.6 million in non-disclosure agreement payments then neglected to record those as personal expenses.
This isn’t the first time McMahon has tried to return, but the board rejected his previous attempt to take back the reins. ESPN quoted from a statement in which McMahon said the “WWE is entering a critical juncture in its history with the upcoming media rights negotiations coinciding with increased industry-wide demand for quality content and live events and with more companies seeking to own the intellectual property on their platforms.”
“My return,” he continued, “will allow WWE, as well as any transaction counterparties, to engage in these processes knowing they will have the support of the controlling shareholder.”
McMahon’s daughter Stephanie McMahon and Nick Khan have served as WWE’s co-CEOs since he retired, but he may not have a beef with their leadership as much as he wants a chance to end things with the WWE on his own terms. As the WSJ noted, McMahon has said that his actions in leaving last year were based in part on “bad advice from people close to him … to step down.”
