  • Minnesota Frost spoil Seattle Torrent’s inaugural game, win 3-0 in front of record crowd

Kelly Pannek scored two goals, Nicole Hensley had a shutout and the two-time defending champion Minnesota Frost disappointed a record women’s hockey crowd with a 3-0 win over the Seattle Torrent on Friday afternoon.

The 16,014 fans set a record for largest attendance at a women’s hockey game in a U.S. arena. It was the inaugural home game for the Torrent.

Late in the first period Pannek got the bounce as she fired a shot from between the circle that Torrent goalie Corinne Schroeder couldn’t corral. She scored her second goal of the season midway through the third period and Grace Zumwinkle added a power play goal.

Hensley made 30 saves for the Frost (1-1-0-0).

Schroeder, who led the league with four shutouts last season for the New York Sirens, made 22 saves for the Torrent (1-0-1-0).

Both teams had two power plays.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — A line along the building, bagpipes and a first pitch all welcomed opening day at A Bar of Their Own Friday morning.

The new bar is set to showcase all women’s sports, all the time.

For many, it’s been a long time coming.

“I played hockey for about 12 years and we had to beg to get ice time,” said Colleen Woodley from St. Paul.

People of all ages packed the bar before lunchtime.

The Seward neighborhood watering hole is taking the space of the former Tracy’s Saloon and Eatery.

“Absolute madness, but in the best way possible,” said owner Jillian Hiscock.

Hiscock said the goal was to create a space dedicated to women’s sports and fans, after visiting a sports bar last year that was lacking.

“I think people have been ready for this and waiting for this for a really long time, and so to have it here and to have folks inside means so much,” said Hiscock.

It all comes just in time for the Big Ten women’s basketball tournament in Minneapolis.

“This is incredible. I love the atmosphere, I love that we finally have a place like this in Minnesota,” said Jami Cooper from Minnetonka.

A place so popular Friday, Hiscock and her staff really had to work to keep up, with people waiting outside for their turn to come in.

“Our team has been really busy getting ready for it. We’re doing our best to get everything out as quickly as we can, but it’s just really fun to have folks here,” said Hiscock.

A Bar of Their Own is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Sarah Nurse scored two goals, including the overtime winner, and Toronto beat Minnesota 4-3 on Tuesday night for its sixth straight victory.

Toronto pulled within three points of first-place Montreal in the PWHL standings. Minnesota remains in second place despite losing three consecutive games.

Toronto never trailed. Blayre Turnbull snuck the puck by Minnesota goaltender Nicole Hensley to put Toronto ahead 1-0 just under six minutes into the game. Kali Flanagan added a goal on a power play in the second period, beating Hensley on the glove side for a 2-1 lead with her second goal of the season. It was Toronto’s first power-play goal by a player other than Natalie Spooner.

Nurse was left alone at the side of the net and knocked home a rebound for a 3-2 lead in the third. Nurse scored her fourth goal of the season at the 3:46 mark of overtime on a deflected shot that sent Hensley the wrong way.

Toronto goaltender Kristen Campbell made 27 saves to earn her league-best eighth win in 12 starts.

Sophie Jaques scored her first professional goal — on a backhand shot — for Minnesota to tie it at 1-all. Natalie Buchbinder also scored her first goal of the season to tie it at 2-all.

Jaques, in her fifth game since being traded to Minnesota, scored on a straightaway blast to tie it at 3-all with 21.1 seconds left in the third.

It was the first three-goal outing for Minnesota since Jan. 27.
