  • Capital One Arena hosts highest-attended game in US women’s hockey history – WTOP News

    D.C.’s Capital One Arena marked a milestone Sunday when it recorded the largest in-arena attendance for a professional women’s hockey match.

    D.C.’s Capital One Arena marked a milestone Sunday when it recorded the largest in-arena attendance for a professional U.S. women’s hockey match.

    The record-setting crowd of 17,228 attendees came as the arena hosted the Professional Women’s Hockey League Takeover Tour game. The anticipated game saw the New York Sirens defeat the Montreal Victoire 2-1.

    Game attendance surpassed the previous record of 16,014 fans set during a PWHL game between the Seattle Torrent and Minnesota Frost at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena on Nov. 28, 2025, according to a release issued by Monumental Sports and Entertainment.

    The game was broadcast locally on Monumental Sports Network and marked the first PWHL match-up played in the District.

    This achievement also comes after the Washington Mystics hosted the Indiana Fever at Capital One in September 2024 for a game that drew a record 20,711 fans. The event itself set the Women’s National Basketball Association single-game attendance mark for a regular season game.

    “We’re incredibly proud to see Capital One Arena serve as the stage for another historic moment with today’s record-setting PWHL game,” said Ted Leonsis, founder, chairman, managing partner, and CEO of MSE.

    “Whether it’s on the ice or the court, these record-setting crowds are the result of deliberate investment, long-term partnership and a belief that women’s sports deserve to be celebrated at the highest level.”

    As part of the weekend’s events, the Capitals hosted a series of events at MedStar Capitals Iceplex and hosted girls’ youth hockey clinics led by ALL CAPS ALL HER instructors and ambassadors with appearances by PWHL players.

    The Montreal Victoire and New York Sirens earlier held open practices for the public with autograph sessions and other fan experiences.

    Women’s hockey brings Takeover Tour to DC

    Women’s professional sports leagues continue to grow in popularity in the United States, with soccer and basketball leading the way. Now, women’s hockey is looking to forge its path.

    In its third season, the Professional Women’s Hockey League organized a “Takeover Tour,” playing 16 regular season games on neutral sites during the 2025-26 season. One of those games will take place at D.C.’s Capital One Arena as the New York Sirens take on Montreal Victoire.

    The game is set to take place on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on Ticketmaster, with prices starting at $30.

    However, the game will not be an exhibition. As of Friday, both teams sat in the upper half of the eight-team standings, with Montreal in second place with a 7-4 record and New York in fourth place, 6-5.

    It’s the third season the PWHL has played games outside of its teams’ cities. The second tour drew over 123,000 fans across nine games.

    Montreal forward Laura Stacey said the league’s quick growth in three years before a Winter Olympics puts it into perspective of how far the sport has come.

    “We never dreamed about being where we are right now,” Stacey said. “The fact that we’re here, we’re now going to Washington to play in Capital One Arena. I think slowly, every single year, we’re getting these moments of ‘Where are we? How are we doing this?’ And I think it really blows our mind every time.”

    For Hayley Scamurra, Sunday’s game is a mini homecoming.

    While she was raised in New York, the Montreal forward is the daughter of former Washington Capitals defender Peter Scamurra, and her mother is from Maryland. Hayley also spent time in the D.C. area as a former coach for the Capitals Youth Development Program and ALL CAPS ALL HER initiative to bring hockey to women and girls.

    Scamurra said she’s watched the D.C. region’s love for hockey grow, despite the region not having a notable women’s college hockey program. She added that, after speaking to people within the Capitals organization, the team and D.C.-area hockey fans will welcome the PWHL with open arms.

    “Growing up, as a kid, no one knew what hockey was,” Scamurra said. “So now, to see so many girls playing hockey there, there’s like dedicated girls teams at the Caps organization and things like that. The growth has been immense.”

    Before the game, both teams will host an open practice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Virginia, where fans can meet players and received signed autographs. On Saturday night, Montreal’s Marie-Philip Poulin and Sirens player Kayla Vespa will participate in a ceremonial puck drop before the Capitals take on the Florida Panthers.

    Vespa, a lifelong Capitals fan, said it is a “full circle moment” to be playing in D.C.

    “I’ve only watched them play on TV, so to be able to be there, at an NHL venue, just shows how much the game has grown,” she said. “To be a lifelong fan, it means a lot, and to be able to bring both teams here … is very exciting, and it’s the next step for us.

    Inside the fight to bring DI women’s hockey to Michigan: ‘Women belong on the same ice’

    Denise Ilitch was tired of being told no.

    For the last few years, she had been championing the idea of varsity women’s hockey to the University of Michigan administration. Because while the school is known as a men’s hockey powerhouse — with nine national championships, the second most all-time — Michigan has never iced a women’s Division I hockey team.

    Ilitch — a regent at the University and the daughter of Marian and the late Mike Ilitch, who bought the Detroit Red Wings in 1982 — had been told repeatedly that it couldn’t be done. The reason? It was too expensive, though Ilitch had never been given any specific figures to back up the rejection.

    “I had not heard a good enough reason on why we couldn’t have women’s hockey DI at Michigan,” Ilitch told The Athletic.

    So, during the March regents meeting, Ilitch went public with her pitch: It’s time for the University of Michigan to launch a varsity women’s hockey program.

    The women’s club team will be in its 30th year when the puck drops for the 2024-25 season on Thursday. And the appetite for women’s hockey in the State was apparent when a Professional Women’s Hockey League game at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit drew a record crowd for a game back in March.

    “Part of our mission statement at the University of Michigan says ‘to serve the people of Michigan.’ And right now, the people of Michigan are not being served. There is a demand for women’s hockey at (Michigan),” Ilitch said during the meeting. “Women belong on the same ice as men. The University of Michigan must show that on our ice, we support varsity women’s hockey. That’s leadership. Hockey is for everyone, and we are ‘HockeyTown.‘”

    Michigan president Santa Ono said he would look into launching a feasibility study with athletic director Warde Manuel.

    The athletic department launched the study in May; it is expected to be completed sometime in the fall.

    The study is a significant step toward a potential future for elite women’s hockey at one of the biggest schools in college athletics. It’s the first real look at adding the sport in decades. This time, though, the push for women’s hockey comes at a historic moment for the sport, with a new professional league and more eyes on the game than ever before.

    “It almost feels like we’ve got this perfect storm,” said Jenna Trubiano, the club team’s head coach. “I personally would have wished it happened many years ago. We can’t change the past but you can focus on the future.”

    There’s reason to believe a women’s DI program would make sense at Michigan.

    But the questions remain: Why has it never worked before? And can they make it happen now?


    It’s been 26 years since women’s hockey was seriously considered for varsity appointment at Michigan.

    The club team was founded in 1994 by a group of women who played hockey in the area — mostly on men’s teams or in open adult leagues — and wanted to see more opportunities exclusively for women. By the 1997-98 season, Michigan was looking to promote two teams to varsity status and women’s hockey — which was about to debut at the 1998 Nagano Olympics — appeared to be high on the shortlist.

    According to archived board minutes, business plans for the addition of women’s hockey and men’s soccer began development in March 1998. That process was not unlike the current feasibility study: The athletic department dug into how it could add women’s hockey as a varsity sport, and how much it would cost.

    Plans were submitted in September 1998, according to the records, but only two months later the department moved on from hockey. In the end, the school opted to elevate men’s soccer and women’s water polo.

    “It was just a money decision,” said Sue McDowell, one of the co-founders of the women’s club hockey team who became a longtime assistant coach.

    Water polo, McDowell was told, would cost significantly less than hockey. And the women’s team could share a facility, the Canham Natatorium, with the men. Soccer already had fields in place. For hockey, though, Yost Ice Arena — with only one ice sheet and one up-to-standard locker room — isn’t easily shared.

    “That was pretty much the nail in the coffin,” McDowell said. “Whenever you brought it up, it was ‘this is too expensive,’ and ‘there’s no way we can do it.’”

    While Michigan passed on women’s hockey, other varsity programs started popping up, including at Big Ten rival schools Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ohio State. Since the NCAA sanctioned women’s hockey in 2000-01, Minnesota (6) and Wisconsin (7) have won the most championships. Ohio State — Michigan’s biggest rival — has won two championships in the last three years, which might actually be the biggest argument in favor of women’s hockey at Michigan in most circles.

    “If Ohio State wins national championships, they should have to run through Michigan,” said Michigan regent Jordan Acker, who supported Ilitch’s argument in favor of a varsity team at the March meeting. “It absolutely plays a role (in the desire for a team), there’s no question about it.”

    Female hockey registration has also grown in the state of Michigan in the decades since that late ’90s decision. Last season, Michigan ranked fourth behind major hockey hotbed states Minnesota, Massachusetts and New York in female registration, per USA Hockey. And yet, save for the Wayne State program, which folded in May 2011, there have been no DI women’s hockey programs in the state of Michigan. In contrast, there are seven men’s programs that will play in 2024-25.

    This has resulted in homegrown talent from successful youth programs such as Little Caesars or HoneyBaked having to leave Michigan to pursue elite college hockey opportunities. Four players from Michigan — Kirsten Simms, Megan Keller, Abby Roque and Taylor Girard — appeared on Team USA rosters last season. All four left the state for college hockey; Simms — who grew up in Plymouth, Mich., and is a junior at Wisconsin — led all NCAA players in scoring last season.

    For McDowell, it’s easy to feel like Michigan missed a critical window in 1997-98. “It’s always been a sore spot,” she said.


    When the feasibility study is complete it will provide decision makers with a comprehensive overview of what it will actually cost to run a program. This includes everything from the cost of scholarships, salaries, and travel budgets, to Title IX implications, and an evaluation of potential venues, which could mean updating an existing facility or building an entirely new one.

    Michigan has hired Collegiate Sports Associates, an executive search and consulting firm, to lead the study. College Hockey Inc. is also involved. A spokesperson from the Michigan athletic department confirmed that the study is ongoing, but did not have anything to share publicly at this time.

    A feasibility study can provide a clear path toward setting up a team. That was the case for the University of Delaware when the school announced at a press conference last year that it would add women’s hockey as a varsity sport for the 2025-26 season. The athletic department had already committed to move to the Football Bowl Subdivision — the highest level of college football in the nation — and was committed to adding a women’s sport to remain Title IX compliant.

    “As we considered all of the NCAA-sponsored sports, women’s ice hockey did make the most sense at the highest level,” said Chrissi Rawak, Delaware’s athletic director.

    Delaware’s study laid out the finances and found that Fred Rust Ice Arena, where the team will play — one of two rinks on campus — only needed small-scale renovations, which made women’s hockey more feasible financially.

    Typically, the lack of an existing facility is the biggest hurdle when it comes to adding DI hockey. For Michigan, Yost Ice Arena is going to play a central role in the study and the future of a women’s varsity program. It was built in 1923 as a field house and was turned into a hockey facility in 1973. It’s an iconic venue in college hockey, but it has only one sheet of ice and one locker room — the men’s home locker room — that would be considered quality enough.

    The varsity men’s hockey team is also the only full-time tenant at Yost. The women’s and men’s club teams do not have locker room space in the arena, and usually practice during off hours because the men’s team has priority. The women’s club team is required to pay to play at Yost, at a cost of between $30,000- $40,000 — it will cost players $2,500 in dues to play hockey at Michigan this season — though President Ono has reimbursed the team for most of its rink bill the last few years.

    If a second team were to move into Yost on a full-time basis, renovations would likely be required, either to add another ice sheet or more locker rooms. But an expansion is unlikely given how old the arena is and the footprint it already has on campus — it backs up onto the baseball facility and sits between the football training facility and an academic building.

    There are rinks in Ann Arbor — such as the Ann Arbor Ice Cube — that could potentially be used as practice facilities to make sharing Yost only necessary for games. The study will examine all of the possible facility options, including other sites on campus that could be renovated to accommodate hockey.

    Donors will likely play an important role in women’s hockey at Michigan, especially if a new building is required.

    In 2011, Michigan promoted men’s and women’s lacrosse teams to varsity; two years later the athletic department received a $100 million donation from Stephen M. Ross, the owner of the Miami Dolphins, which helped fund the new athletic campus that includes a lacrosse stadium. In hockey, Penn State men’s and women’s hockey debuted in 2012-13 after a $102 million donation from Terry and Kim Pegula, the owners of the Buffalo Bills and NHL Sabres, which funded the construction of the Pegula Ice Arena.

    “I think that there’s cautious enthusiasm for this,” Ilitch said. “I’ve received numerous calls from people that want to help, that want to get involved, that want to donate. Generally you have to call donors. Donors don’t call you.”

    Another major consideration for Michigan will be where the team plays. Delaware is joining Atlantic Hockey America, which already includes Lindenwood, Mercyhurst, Penn State, Rochester Institute of Technology, Robert Morris University, and Syracuse.

    For Michigan, the most likely options are the AHA and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Big Ten doesn’t currently sponsor women’s hockey like it does for men’s hockey, but it’s fair to wonder if that would change if Michigan entered the picture.

    The WCHA makes a lot of sense with three Big Ten teams (Wisconsin, Ohio State and Minnesota) and would allow Michigan to capitalize on preexisting rivalries. But, the conference’s footprint stretches over 900 miles between Bemidji, Minn., and Columbus, Ohio, which would impact travel costs. Joining the AHA would mean more drivable trips, and would likely be easier to compete in — that’s ultimately what made it a “perfect league” for Delaware, Rawak said.

    AHA commissioner Michelle Morgan said she’s had some “very preliminary” conversations with Michigan about league dues and travel. When asked if Michigan would be a fit for the WCHA, commissioner Michelle McAteer said, “Like everyone in women’s hockey, the momentum, interest and potential around Michigan elevating to DI status is very exciting. We would work with College Hockey Inc., institutional representatives and the other DI hockey conferences to help make that happen.”


    The current push for women’s hockey at Michigan appears to have all the right pieces assembled: the support of the regents — including the power and influence of Denise Ilitch — and President Ono, potential donors, and the desire to beat Ohio State in every sporting arena.

    Two years ago, those ingredients might have led to an easy yes. But now?

    “It might be the worst time to add a varsity sport to an athletic program,” said Greg Dooley, a professor at Michigan who teaches courses about the history of college athletics.

    College athletics are on the cusp of unprecedented change. The explosion in NIL compensation for athletes has already changed the landscape. And now — after the NCAA and the nation’s five biggest conferences have agreed to pay nearly $2.8 billion to settle several antitrust claims — the stage is set for millions of dollars to go directly to student athletes.

    A groundbreaking revenue-sharing model outlined in the March settlement proposal would have schools each provide up to $21 million annually to student athletes. That has already led to budget cuts across the NCAA, with more difficult decisions — particularly when it comes to Olympic or “non-revenue sports” — sure to come.

    “Most athletic departments right now are going to be making decisions about which programs to support and possibly cut,” Dooley said. “Who is going to add a hockey program right now?”

    In June, the Michigan athletic department projected total operating revenues for 2024-25 to be $255.7 million — a $25 million increase from the 2024 fiscal year — with projected operating expenses of $253.4 million. Michigan athletics financially benefits from its football program — the defending national champions — and the Big Ten’s $8 billion media rights deal that began last season. But even Michigan, with its large revenues, is going to face major challenges in the new landscape of college athletics.

    “It has to make sense financially for the athletic department to support all the teams in this new world, which we’re not quite clear on yet,” Dooley said. “If you’re running a business, you probably wait to make any significant changes until you understand the real impact.”

    When Delaware decided to move forward with women’s hockey, the athletic department had no sense of what was to come. Rawak said the looming changes wouldn’t have altered their decision, given the increased exposure and national visibility that comes with a move to FBS football. But she did admit this is a much more complicated time to add significant expenses to an athletic department.

    And while Dooley has many reservations about the changes to come, if there’s a school that can pull this off at this time in collegiate athletics, it’s Michigan.

    “I think it’s the right thing to do at the right time,” he said. “I think people in this town will support it, and frankly most people wished they had this team 20 years ago.”

    We waited more than a year for proper PWHL nicknames and logos. Now that we have them, courtesy of Monday’s official unveiling, we’re not going to waste any more time.

    Which of the six new combos — the Boston Fleet, Minnesota Frost, Montréal Victoire, New York Sirens, Ottawa Charge and Toronto Sceptres — is our No. 1? How do the rest measure up?

    Shayna: Everything about Montreal’s look and branding just clicks. Victoire just feels fresh relative to other names associated with Montreal hockey in the past (and present, really). It’s something that works for both French and English speakers, too. The maroon of the color scheme feels grand enough to match the energy that the name brings, and using cream over white adds a classic touch. The navy completes the look and accents the logo. I have nitpicks here or there with the rest of the teams, so the combination of the name and logo makes this an easy No. 1 for me.

    Hailey: I was surprised at how much I liked Montreal, considering I wanted the league to go back to Les Canadiennes from the CWHL days. Regardless, Montreal has the best combination of name and logo, which is why it gets the edge over New York and Toronto for me. There’s more detail to appreciate in the Montreal logo specifically, with the fleur-de-lis and the hidden M toward the bottom. “Victoire” is also just a cool name to have for a team with the most clutch player in the history of the women’s game.

    Sean: I almost feel bad having them at No. 3. Shayna and Hailey are correct about everything. I really appreciate the freshness of the package — if this one isn’t groundbreaking, it’s pretty close. Also, the logo looks like a diamond! Nobody else said that!

    2. Toronto Sceptres

    Hailey rank: 3
    Sean rank: 2
    Shayna rank: 2

    Hailey: If you asked me immediately after the PWHL announcement, I’d probably have “Sceptres” lower than No. 3 and maybe I was just being a picky local because I can see Coca-Cola Coliseum from my apartment. But Toronto’s logo might be my favorite of the six and the name is really growing on me – if nothing else it’s certainly unique. The colors look great, and I do think a team like Toronto – with fans who dressed up as spoons and nurses last season – could have a lot of fun with this. Sarah Nurse literally has a brand with the motto “Queen Energy Only.”

    Shayna: Absolutely yes to the logo and to the color scheme. The name just … I need some time with this one. The Toronto teaser tweeted out the other day made me think “Royals” or “Monarchs” was the direction here, and I think either of those would have slapped. Sceptres isn’t a bad name and it’s unique to a sports team, it just doesn’t roll off the tongue yet.

    Sean: I didn’t like the nickname initially — like, at all — but it grew on me pretty quickly … if we’re grading on a curve. I don’t love a monarchy; Canadian money bothers me for this reason. Still, points for creativity, the originality of a navy-light blue-gold combo and the best logo of the bunch. It’ll sell well with Taylor Swift fans.

    Hailey: I didn’t even consider that. Sean might be the biggest Swiftie of the group!

    3. New York Sirens

    Hailey rank: 2
    Sean rank: 1
    Shayna rank: 6

    Sean: I’m hard to please when it comes to team names. I don’t like collective nouns (i.e., “Kraken”), but I’m also not looking for more Panthers or Vikings. That’s a small sweet spot, and nobody hit it more directly than the Sirens. The logo isn’t my favorite — something about the way the wordmark halves the Y — but I think it’ll pop as a center crest.

    The main reason I have them in my top spot: I don’t think any name-logo combo is more cohesive. “Sirens” works as a reference to hockey, yes, but also Long Island Sound, and I continue to love that shade of teal, especially in concert with the New York Liberty and Gotham FC. It’s the total package.

    Hailey: I was Team New York Sirens until my last-minute swerve to the Montreal bandwagon. I think the name Sirens is my favorite, but the Montreal logo was the tie-breaker in my ranking. The colors are great, and the synergy with women’s sports in the tri-state area is a nice touch. This team has a lot of potential with in-arena activations, too. Can we get a giant siren?

    Shayna: I absolutely love New York leaning into teal to stay consistent with the Liberty and Gotham FC. But the name is a no from me. I know it’s probably a reference to the water, but my immediate thought was: “We get it, New York’s loud with a lot of sirens.” I actually would prefer the Sound, which was one of those original trademarks leaked last year. That made sense for a team that bounced among New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. As for the logo – remember the Superman S you probably sketched on your notebook in middle school? This feels like a dressed-up version of that.

    4. Boston Fleet

    Shayna rank: 3

    Sean: I had a pretty defined top three and bottom three — half the brands seem to be going for one thing, and half another — and Boston was the best of the second batch based largely on the logo. It helps that the letter ‘B’ looks so much like a fishhook, but credit where it’s due. I also spy a bit of a Hartford Whalers reference, if you look from the side. Is that me projecting? Perhaps. In any case, it’s fine. A little uninspired, but fine. As for the name, I don’t like “Fleet,” but I also dislike it less than the other (Anglo) collective nouns.

    Hailey: While Boston is a tier below Montreal, New York and Toronto, it’s also the best of the rest for me. The logo is far superior to Ottawa and Minnesota – the details inside the B and the anchor shape – though I like the “Charge” name more than “Fleet.” I can’t imagine it’s easy developing a sports brand in a city with the Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics, but this is a nice entry.

    Shayna: Boston may have one of the coolest logos here, which really boosts its ranking. The anchor-like B is just so sharp. If that W is an intentional reference to the Whalers, I like it even more as a way to celebrate New England hockey in the post-Connecticut Whale era. The name I was initially sour on, but it’s not that bad. It’s a nice nod to Boston’s history and overall being a major seaport.

    5. Minnesota Frost

    Shayna: I was really rooting for the “Reign” here with the purple scheme as a nod to Prince, but this isn’t a bad direction. The Minnesota Frost is honestly a pretty sick name that makes a lot of sense for a hockey team without being too cheesy and literal. The reason they don’t rank higher isn’t because the other teams are all so incredible that it was a process of elimination. The logo just falls short and drags the entire branding down. The ‘F’ is a promising start, but feels so incomplete.

    Sean: This feels more like a create-a-team template than any of the others. I guess the negative space creates a mountain, which … it’s something. Points for purple.

    Hailey: More than the other teams, Minnesota feels like a victim to the legal process when it comes to naming sports teams in 2024. The Ontario Reign already exist in the AHL, and the league clearly wanted new names it could fully own. I honestly don’t dislike the Frost – or any of the names for that matter – and I love the colors, but I can’t stop thinking about the F being on a cartoon superhero. I thought it was Frozone, but he doesn’t wear purple.

    6. Ottawa Charge

    Shayna: Ottawa is very middle-of-the-road for me. I think the more I look at it, the more I find flaws with it. The color scheme doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but red-yellow-white is bright and eye-catching on the ice which I can appreciate. But I second what Sean said earlier on collective nouns for team names. And the logo (plus the color scheme) is giving knock-off Calgary Flames. I do love the Flames look and logo, so it’s not necessarily a bad thing. It just isn’t my favorite!

    Hailey: I honestly don’t have strong feelings about Ottawa: The name works well enough for me, and the logo is fine. The whole electric charge vibe would have been cool if Daryl Watts was still on the team. Too soon! I’m sorry!

    Sean: “Go Charge Go” is going to be a great arena chant, but the rest of it looks way too close to a software company logo from, like, 1997 for my taste. Sorry.

    Chasing a hockey dream together: How Luke and Sophia Kunin make the first NHL-PWHL marriage work

    ST. PAUL, Minn. — For years, Luke Kunin watched as his girlfriend, then fiancée, then wife, Sophia, supported his career.

    She was a shoulder to lean on when things got tough in Minnesota. Moved to Nashville when he was traded there. Was a constant during the toughest season of his pro career — last year with the San Jose Sharks, when he tore his ACL.

    So Kunin can’t wait to walk into Xcel Energy Center — the arena where he began his NHL career as a Minnesota Wild rookie seven years ago — on Saturday with the shoe on the other foot. The 1 p.m. CDT game will be his first time watching Sophia play at the highest level in person, as she’ll take the ice with Minnesota’s Professional Women’s Hockey League team to face Boston in its regular-season home finale ahead of next month’s playoffs.

    “I’ll get to see what it’s all about,” Luke said. “I’ve watched her games on the internet all year — as much as I can with our schedule — but I think of all the things she’s sacrificed for me over the years so I can live out my dream. I can’t wait to be there to support her and watch her live her dream.”

    Luke and Sophia Kunin’s relationship has helped them come through so much to arrive at this point. Meeting as teenagers. Watching each other excel in hockey. Becoming college sweethearts. And Luke being Sophia’s “rock every step of the way” after the most traumatic event of her life, the death of her younger brother, Drake, at the start of her sophomore year.

    Luke, 26, is a hard-nosed, hard-working forward for the Sharks who hails from suburban St. Louis. Sophia, 27, who grew up in Wayzata, Minn., and is now one of PWHL Minnesota’s fastest, most reliable forwards, was known as Sophia Shaver until the Kunins were married last summer in the Twin Cities.

    They are the only husband and wife professional hockey players in their respective top leagues in North America.

    For now.

    “I think the more our league’s around, the more we’re going to start to see it,” said U.S. Hockey Hall of Famer Natalie Darwitz, GM of PWHL Minnesota and a two-time NCAA champion with the University of Minnesota. “Not to say that romances are going to happen left and right at the rink, but as more franchises start to share facilities and we’re around, it only makes sense because who better to understand the other’s schedule and commitment than another professional hockey player.

    “To me, Luke and Sophia is such a cool story. It’d be even cooler if Luke still played for the Wild.”


    Luke and Sophia met at the University of Wisconsin before their freshman years. Luke was an incoming men’s hockey player for a Badgers team he’d ultimately captain as a sophomore. Sophia was an incoming women’s hockey player for a Badgers team she’d ultimately captain and help lead to an NCAA championship with the winning goal in the title game.

    At Wisconsin, athletes usually come to Madison for summer training before the school year starts.

    “We actually were both in the same dorm,” Sophia recalled. “It was a small dorm with us — women’s hockey — men’s hockey, both basketballs and then some track people. We had a lot of time on our hands so we would hang out all the time. We’d see each other at the rink. Started off as friends and then really quickly just started dating in the fall of our freshman year.”

    They’ve been together since, although because Luke plays for San Jose and Sophia was part of the Minnesota team in the inaugural PWHL season, they were newlyweds who rarely got to see each other during this first year as husband and wife.

    Wild winger Marcus Foligno may be six years older than Luke, but the two hit it off right away when Luke arrived in Minnesota as a rookie, becoming such good pals that Foligno was a groomsman in the Kunins’ wedding, along with Luke’s former Nashville Predators teammate Colton Sissons and childhood best friend Matthew Tkachuk.

    In early March, when the Sharks came to Minnesota for their first visit of 2023-24, Foligno was so excited to see his old friend that he asked if he wanted to have dinner the night before the game. He forgot, of course, that Luke would probably rather spend some time with his wife.

    “He’s like, ‘Dude, I haven’t seen Sophia in two months,’” Foligno said, laughing. “I’m like, ‘Oh my God, that’s right. You guys have a crazy lifestyle.’ I don’t know how they do it. I’d go insane if I didn’t see my wife all the time, especially the first year of our marriage.”

    But as tough as it is, the Kunins have done the long-distance thing often in their relationship since Kunin left Wisconsin after his sophomore year to turn pro.

    “It’s tough, but we’re kind of used to it,” Sophia said. “We’ve been apart a lot of our lives. And with both of our schedules, we kind of have the same schedule. So we’re both unavailable to each other throughout the day. We’re here at the rink and then we get to catch up at night.”

    Added Luke, “We both love playing and both love what we’re doing and just want to enjoy it as long as we can or as long as both of us want to do it, I guess. Yeah, it’s tough being separated. You want to see each other. But it’s cool to see everything that she’s been doing and the way the league’s going, how much fun she’s having.”


    Sophia had just played a weekend series against St. Cloud State when she got the devastating call from her parents, Cristen and Tom, on Oct. 2, 2016, that Drake had taken his own life. A high school hockey and lacrosse player, an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, Drake was only 17.

    “He was a very happy, normal, popular guy,” Sophia said. “That’s why it came as such a shock to all of us because we would’ve never seen the signs. He seemed to have everything together, but he was struggling on the inside and didn’t want to open up.”

    Sophia returned home but came back to school a week later. She buried herself in as much schoolwork and hockey as she could, but she was not doing OK.

    Luke was one of her continuous means of support.

    “This is probably one of the reasons why we’re so strong together because we would only have been dating for a year at that point,” Sophia said. “I had to lean on him a ton that year because it was obviously the hardest year of my life. That year and even years past, just having him there for me — and he was so good about just checking in and making sure I was doing OK, it’s probably how I got through it. And remember, he’s going through a year where he’s trying to make it to the NHL, too, so he had a tough time with it as well, and I’ll just forever be grateful for him for that.”

    Luke was only 18 at the time and was heartbroken for Sophia and her family. He had started to become close with her parents and siblings, including Sophia’s sister, Crosby, who went to the Air Force Academy, was a pilot who flew refueler jets and now has an independent contracting job in Washington, D.C.

    “I still can’t imagine what she was going through and her family, and I just wanted to be there for her and her family,” Luke said. “Yeah, it was tough. Drake was such a good kid, and I think the way she handled everything and continues to handle everything, she is crazy strong mentally, just to get through that. She kind of keeps everything moving forward and in the right direction.

    “The way she had to handle herself when it happened has really helped turn her into the person she is today. Every day, she just goes about her business and is good and decent to everyone she meets. I know she says I helped her through that time, but she’s the toughest person I’ve ever met. Still is, and we still talk about Drake all the time when the families are together, and he’s still a big part of our family for sure.”

    Luke is very close with Sophia’s family, especially her dad, Tom, who takes him to their cabin in Crosslake to go fishing and hunting.

    “Luke was never into it because he just didn’t grow up with it, but now he’s got a real passion for the outdoors and loves hanging with my dad,” Sophia said. “They’ve known him since he was 17, so my dad loves teaching Luke things about fishing and hunting. They’ve kind of grown together through that, and they really do think of him as a son.”

    As tough of a year as the Sharks had, winning only 19 games, Luke scored 11 goals, got into a team-leading nine fights, led the team’s forwards with 165 hits and wore a letter on his chest. General manager Mike Grier said he epitomized what the team is looking for in San Jose, someone willing to battle every night.

    A restricted free agent, Luke hopes to sign a long-term deal there this offseason.

    And Sophia, who scored a goal in Minnesota’s first game at Boston, is a player Darwitz feels will prove quite valuable once the playoffs begin. Every team has high-end skill, but Darwitz believes the teams that separate themselves will be the ones with high-end depth provided by players like Sophia, who has scored two goals and an assist in 21 games.

    “In any playoff run, it’s your depth,” Darwitz said. “Sophia’s a big part of our secondary scoring because of her speed. She’s got good hockey IQ. She makes stuff happen. Usually, a lot of her play is without the puck — how well she angles, creates a turnover. Does she want to be on this stat sheet more? Absolutely. Should she be? She could be. She has the potential and the skill. But she’s doing exactly what we need from her right now.”

    Luke and Sophia don’t do a lot of offseason training together. In Nashville, when Sophia was a commercial real estate broker, she skated with the Junior Preds high schoolers to keep in shape and keep playing. But in the summertime now, even though they’re both pros, Luke does his own thing and she does her thing with a group of women who play professionally.

    “She’s worked crazy hard to get to where she is,” Luke said. “And I think it’s awesome for the players to have something to look forward to post-college. It’s been great to see how well the turnouts have been in terms of attendance and how well the league’s going. Obviously, it’s real young, but hopefully good things to come for both her and the league.

    “Sophia does a little bit of everything. I’ve seen her play in college, and similar to me, just seeing the transition from her college game to pro is really cool. She’s very well-rounded. I’m just having a blast watching her have fun and just hope her and her team does well.”

    Foligno got to read the starting lineup in the locker room for PWHL Minnesota’s first-ever home game. Two of his young daughters were by his side, and he hoped it would make an impression long into the future that women were about to play a professional hockey game.

    “And my girls know who Sophia is for sure,” Foligno said. “Luke and Sophia are two great people who come from great families. The whole long-distance relationship after getting married is wild in itself, but they’re two people that are passionate about what they do and support each other, which is pretty cool. It’s why they’ve been together for so long. Not to be sappy, but Luke really loves his girl, so it’s cool to see them playing professionally and having success while doing it, too.”

    Kunin is back in Minnesota for now, but he will head to Czechia next month with the U.S. national team to take part in the world championships. In 2017, he captained the U.S. to world juniors gold.

    He’s just excited that during this short stay he’ll get to take in one of Sophia’s games.

    And to hang out with his best friend, their spunky 4-year-old French Bulldog, Rocco.

    “Luke misses Rocco more than me when he’s away,” Sophia said.

    “He’s my favorite,” Luke joked. “But Sophia might take a little better care of him than I could in San Jose, so he stays here. It’s always tough leaving him, especially because when I come back, he pouts at first because he’s so mad I was gone. He gets over it, but the cycle always repeats itself.”

    This has been a long, long year for the Kunins being separated. On their wedding day last July, Luke stole the show at the reception by grabbing the mic and singing rock n’ roll songs like Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Goin Down.”

    “He’s not a good singer at all, by the way,” Sophia cracked.

    Several NHLers were there, including Matthew and Brady Tkachuk, Sissons, Dante Fabbro, Ryan Hartman, Jordan Greenway and Foligno.

    Several of Sophia’s former teammates were bridesmaids, including Abby Roque, who plays for PWHL New York.

    “Abby is kind of the Matthew Tkachuk of our league: talks smack, kind of a rat, so naturally we paired them together as bridesmaid and groomsman and they walked down the aisle together,” Sophia said, laughing.

    This is life as an NHL-PWHL couple. Enjoying the moments they get together and appreciating each other’s careers as they try to fulfill the same dreams.

    Even Grier said, “I hear it in Luke’s voice when he talks about the league and talks about Sophia. He’s so proud of her and gets such enjoyment watching her play hockey.”

    “I think we’re both super grateful that we, one, met in college and got to play college hockey, but then to continue our careers both professionally,” Sophia said. “It’s a super unique experience. It’s really nice to just have someone else that’s going through the exact same thing as you. Our seasons are going on at the same time. We get to talk about the highs and lows.

    “To have someone like that as your partner is really special for us.”

    The business of Sarah Nurse: She’s one of the faces of hockey, but her sights are set on more

    TORONTO — Sarah Nurse was driving home from a recent PWHL Toronto practice when she got a bit of sage advice.

    It wasn’t from a podcast or a friend on the phone. The advice came courtesy of a billboard on the side of the road in Canada’s most populous city, featuring her own face with the Adidas slogan “You got this.”

    “I was like, yeah, I do,” Nurse said with a laugh.

    The billboard she drove past is one of many across the country, including a massive advertisement at Yonge-Dundas Square — Toronto’s closest approximation to Times Square in New York City — that pairs Nurse with Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes and World Cup champion Lionel Messi.

    Nurse, 29, has had major partnerships in the past. In 2020, Tim Hortons and Mattel collaborated to make a Barbie doll in her likeness. In 2022, she was featured on a Cheerios box. But in the two years since her breakout performance at the Beijing Olympics — in which she broke a record for points in a single tournament (18) — Nurse has become one of the biggest faces in women’s hockey.

    She became the first woman to appear on the cover of an EA Sports hockey video game with NHL 23. She was a key figure in the launch of the Professional Women’s Hockey League as a member of the player-led bargaining committee that struck a first-of-its-kind CBA in women’s professional hockey. This month, she starred in a Canadian Super Bowl commercial and was one of the busiest athletes during NHL All-Star Weekend, appearing at several league and partner events.

    “Everywhere you turn, it’s like, there’s Sarah,” said Canadian national team defender Erin Ambrose.

    Nurse’s eight major endorsement deals put her ahead of virtually every other professional hockey player, outside of a handful of NHL stars. Among women and players of color, she is in uncharted territory.

    Her ascension has been years in the making — all part of a carefully crafted business plan developed by Nurse and her team at Dulcedo Management, a talent agency, to make Nurse not just one of the faces of the game, but someone with the kind of celebrity that transcends her sport.

    “You don’t need to follow basketball to know who LeBron James is,” said her agent, Thomas Houlton. “That’s what we want to do for Sarah.”

    When Nurse signed with Dulcedo in 2019, her reputation as a player was already strong.

    At 24 years old, Nurse had already been a star at the University of Wisconsin, won an Olympic silver medal and been drafted with the No. 2 pick in the now-defunct Canadian Women’s Hockey League. In those early days, Nurse was often discussed as one of the newest branches of an impressive athletic family tree.

    Her father, Roger, was an elite lacrosse player. Her aunt, Raquel, was a celebrated point guard at Syracuse University who married Philadelphia Eagles legend Donovan McNabb. Her cousins include Kia Nurse, a two-time Olympian and WNBA all-star, and Darnell Nurse, a defenseman for the Edmonton Oilers.

    With Nurse’s multifaceted appeal, several agents came calling.

    But after the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, Nurse, who graduated with a business degree, was looking to explore her interests in fashion and beauty — fields that are typically outside the areas of expertise for traditional sports agencies. Nurse, however, wasn’t playing in a typical sports landscape.

    In the CWHL, players were paid only small stipends — Nurse said she made $2,000 as a rookie in the league — which meant playing women’s professional hockey was not a main source of income.

    Dulcedo, which launched as a modeling agency but has since expanded into other industries, including sports, could give Nurse more opportunities to branch out.

    “She didn’t just want to be known as Sarah Nurse, the hockey player,” explained Houlton. “And not just as a piece of the (family tree). … It’s been clear from the beginning that she really wanted to have her own legacy.”

    “When I first signed with them,” Nurse said, “I did this glamor photoshoot, and I’d never done anything like that before because I’m a hockey player — nobody gives me fake eyelashes or puts lipstick on me. I was like, this could be the start of something great, because I felt like they got me.”

    Houlton signed Nurse to blue-chip sports partners like CCM and Adidas but also worked on building up her social-media profile to position her in areas outside of hockey. “No skincare brand is going to want to work with you if we don’t see skincare anywhere,” he explained.

    On the ice, Nurse was in another Olympic cycle with Team Canada leading up to the 2022 Games in Beijing and in the middle of a period of upheaval in women’s professional hockey. The CWHL folded in March 2019, and most of the players banded together to sit out of professional hockey until a better league was formed. Then the 2020 women’s world championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The stakes were high in the year leading up to the Olympics. For athletes without big-ticket professional contracts, the once-every-four-year window the Games provide is a critical moment to make money — and a name for themselves. A knee injury during tryouts put into question whether Nurse would be healthy enough to play.

    “I came out of the world championships in Calgary and I was on the fourth line — that’s not a safe place to be. Then I blew up my knee,” Nurse said. “So I’m going into Olympic tryouts and I’m like, I don’t know if I can make this team.”

    To the coaching staff, despite the fact she couldn’t skate in the months leading up to the tournament, Nurse had more than proven her worth to the Canadian national team.

    “We knew that she was going to be a big part of our program if she was healthy enough to go,” said Canada’s head coach, Troy Ryan. “The combination of her work ethic and the medical staff did a great job getting her back.”

    “What I love about Sarah, as a teammate and as a hockey player, is that she does the little things right. She’s versatile in the sense that she can play center and play wing. She can win draws, she’s hard to play against, you can trust her in tough matchups,” said Ambrose. “For so long with the national team, that was her m.o. Whatever you needed, she was there.”

    Nurse made the team and was healthy in time for the start of the tournament. She also secured Olympic campaigns with General Mills, Sportchek, RBC and more.

    Team Canada rewrote the record books in Beijing, going undefeated in the tournament to win a gold medal. Nurse, who started the tournament on the fourth line, worked her way up to the top line with Marie-Philip Poulin and Brianne Jenner, and broke Hayley Wickenheiser’s Olympic scoring record with 18 points in six games. She set a record for assists in a single tournament (13) and became the first Black woman to win an Olympic gold medal in hockey.

    “That was really the catalyst for her to take that next step,” said Houlton. “And really propelled us into what was the next phase of her life.”

    Ninety minutes before the NHL All-Star red-carpet event, Nurse was in a hotel room in downtown Toronto doing her hair, getting her makeup done and shooting content for her social media channels — nothing she wasn’t used to.

    Her All-Star weekend responsibilities had started days before, with media and promotional appearances. Earlier that morning, she was on the ice for an outdoor practice with the PWHL players chosen to represent the brand-new league at the NHL’s tentpole event. She then made a surprise visit to a girls hockey team with teammates Renata Fast, Natalie Spooner and Adidas.

    After leaving the hotel, she’d walk the red carpet, surprise another girls hockey team — this time with Canadian Tire and Poulin — and, 12 hours after her day started, play in the PWHL three-on-three showcase at Scotiabank Arena. That part of her schedule doesn’t include the NHL skills competition, which Nurse was on the ice for on Friday night, or the regular-season PWHL game she played on Saturday.

    “That whole week was a blur,” Nurse said.

    “I don’t even know if we were anticipating what occurred there in terms of, like, you can’t even walk a couple of steps without someone stopping and saying, ‘That’s Sarah Nurse, can I get a picture?’” Houlton said. “It was amazing to see how far she’s come.”

    Everything about Nurse’s NHL All-Star weekend suggests the plan has worked. In the last year, Nurse has gotten so busy that Dulcedo added Phoebe Balshin to the team as a senior athlete manager in January 2023. Her job was to create a more strategic plan for Nurse’s brand and help her take the next step.

    “When I first came on, a big conversation was: Sarah works with so many brands, but what is her brand? Who is she? What is her mission and vision?” Balshin said. “So we basically built out a five-year plan with her to take us through Milan (the 2026 Olympics.)”

    To refine the process, Nurse identified four specific intersections of her own interests and growth opportunities: hockey, fashion and beauty, entrepreneurship and community. A potential partnership must move the needle in at least one of those categories.

    “If something doesn’t align with me, we’re not going to do it,” Nurse said.

    Nurse now has eight major sponsors: Adidas, CCM, RBC, Canadian Tire, Tim Hortons, EA Sports, Chevrolet and, most recently, Dyson. She’s also signed other paid partnerships with beauty brands such as Dove, L’Oréal and Revlon.

    Brands targeted Nurse after her Olympic performance, but that’s just one part of the total package. She’s outgoing with an affable charm, an infectious laugh and an ease on camera.

    “It comes down to personality, and Sarah is very much one-of-one,” Houlton said. “Sarah can show up on set straight out of bed and look amazing, sound amazing, and give the brand the best performance they’ve ever seen.”

    Nurse is a biracial Black woman and is vocal in her support of increased representation in a predominantly White sport. Her team is cautious about the intentions of potential sponsors. “I need to ask all the right questions to make sure that this brand is not just using her so they check their diversity box,” Houlton explained.

    They’ve also worked with partners that Nurse already had in her portfolio to ensure that her goals are being met — not just the brand’s own objectives.

    During All-Star weekend, Nurse did a shoot with RBC that included Poulin and Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews, which oriented  Nurse as a professional athlete — not just as a women’s hockey player. Her Adidas campaign has her aligned with big names outside of the sport, such as Mahomes and Messi. “Our goal is to get her neck and neck with the best,” Balshin explained.

    Last week, Nurse launched “Nursey Night,” in which she will host young Black girls at PWHL Toronto games, meet with them postgame and mentor them throughout the year. The idea started as a way for Nurse to give away her brother’s season tickets every once in a while but it ended up with a $50,000 donation from Rogers and a partnership with Black Girl Hockey Club, a non-profit organization focused on making hockey more inclusive.

    “People want to be involved in anything she does,” Balshin said. “That’s kind of how we snowball things over here.”

    On top of promotional appearances and events, Nurse posts paid promotions on social media and has gotten more active on TikTok, posting videos while doing her makeup or skincare, or providing motivation to young girls and women who visit her channels. Everything gets put into a content calendar that Balshin manages, and every morning she sends Nurse a text outlining “everything we have to worry about today.”

    “She has made our lives a lot happier,” Nurse said. “We got to a point where there was just too much happening and we couldn’t facilitate everything.”

    With everything going on off the ice, it’s easy to forget that Nurse is one of Canada’s best hockey players and a face of the PWHL in Toronto. She’s also the vice president of the PWHL Players Association and is on the Hockey Canada player committee.

    “I would love to sit down and see her calendar,” Ambrose said. “I am in awe of what she does away from the rink. I am in awe of what she does at the rink. I truthfully don’t know how she does it but I love her for it.”

    Nurse knows it sounds like there’s a lot on her plate but insists she’s very good at compartmentalizing. Ryan, also her coach with PWHL Toronto, says Nurse’s other responsibilities have “never negatively impacted who she is as a player.”

    “I think she’s found ways to actually use it to make sure she still has an impact in the game,” he said. “She’s under a spotlight and under a microscope so much. I think that sense of pride she probably gets with that has probably forced her to do the extra work.”

    “I’m very conscious of the fact that for me to do all of this other stuff, I need to perform my best on the ice,” added Nurse, who scored two goals on Tuesday night, including the game winner against Minnesota.

    Gone are the days of players such as Nurse making only $2,000 a season to play hockey. In the PWHL, the minimum salary $35,000, with some top players making as much as $100,000. Still, even the league’s best players aren’t getting rich playing women’s professional hockey.

    “The marketing does mean a lot to them and is a main source of income,” Balshin said.

    The work that Nurse is putting in is also laying the track for life after hockey, whenever that comes. It would take something unforeseen for Nurse to not be at the 2026 Olympics.

    Nurse has thought about pursuing several paths, from real estate investment to launching a clothing line or a production company. “I definitely have aspirations to expand and grow into different sectors,” she said.

    “We want her to be a face of hockey, period, not just women’s hockey. And of inclusion in sport,” Balshin said. “She wants to show young girls that they can be so many things.”

    How the PWHL’s youngest player is adjusting to a new league — and a new language


    OTTAWA — Nearly 6,000 miles away from her hometown in Hokkaido, Japan, Akane Shiga was being asked about the weather.

    Mike Hirshfeld, general manager of Ottawa’s PWHL team, was sitting with Shiga and coach Carla MacLeod in the team office at TD Place Arena, speaking to the 22-year-old forward and Japanese national team member through her interpreter.

    “She’s looking at me like, ‘What is he talking about?’” Hirshfeld said about the playful preamble to an important bit of news ahead of the PWHL’s final roster deadline.

    Because what Hirshfeld really wanted to know was how Shiga felt about spending the winter in Ottawa, as a member of the newest pro team in Canada’s capital.

    When he told Shiga that she’d made the team, “her face just lit up,” Hirshfeld said.

    “I feel very honored to be given this opportunity,” Shiga told The Athletic through her interpreter, Madoka Suzuki.

    The moment was the culmination of a hockey journey that saw Shiga travel across the world for her chance to play professional hockey in North America. Despite her credentials — an Olympian and four-time member of Japan’s World Championship team — she was not selected in the 15-round PWHL Draft in September. Unswayed, Shiga flew to Ottawa alone in November, with no guarantee of a contract, to try out for the team.

    Her skating ability, quick release and hockey IQ impressed Ottawa’s braintrust and earned Shiga a one-year contract.

    Now, she is a historic player in a historic league embarking on a singular path: Shiga is the youngest player in the PWHL and the only Japanese-born player.

    This season Shiga is adjusting to her first year as a professional hockey player, and simultaneously adapting to life in a new country and learning a new language.

    “To know the courage it took for her to fly over here on her own and walk into an environment where she didn’t speak the language and she didn’t know anyone,” MacLeod said. “To know at that moment that she had gambled on herself and she earned her opportunity — that’s what sport is all about.”


    Where Shiga grew up in Hokkaido — the northernmost and second-largest island in Japan — hockey is, at the very least, an option. Some might call it Japan’s hockey hotbed, with most of the national team players coming from the northern region.

    “If you want to play hockey, it’s accessible,” Shiga said through her interpreter. “But it’s not a sport that everyone picks to play like it is in Canada.”

    In Tokyo, on the other hand, where Suzuki — who was hired to serve as Shiga’s interpreter in November and plays hockey at Carleton University in Ottawa — is from, “you’re kind of a weirdo if you’re playing hockey,” he said with a laugh.

    According to the IIHF, there are only 1,281 registered female hockey players in Japan, with a national population of about 124 million. There are more indoor rinks in Canada (2,860) and registered female players in the state of Florida (1,517).

    Shiga, though, found hockey skating on an outdoor rink with her sister, Aoi, when she was six years old and she “never looked back.” When she was 13, in 2014, Shiga watched a Japanese women’s hockey team play at the Olympics for the first time in her life — and for the first time since Japan was the host nation in 1998. “It had a big impact on my career,” she said.

    MacLeod, now Shiga’s coach in Ottawa, was an assistant coach for Japan at the time.

    “I know what ’98 meant to me as a young Canadian kid when I saw those women on TV and I knew that that dream could then be mine,” said MacLeod, who went on to win two Olympic gold medals with Team Canada. “To know that a piece of that moment is within her and helping her to inspire that next group and helping her to achieve her dreams is pretty special.”

    Shiga’s dream was realized only one year later when she made the Japanese under-18 team for the 2015-16 Division 1 world championships. She was one of the youngest players at the tournament and scored two goals and four points to lead Japan to a gold medal, and promotion to the top tier U18 world championships in 2016-17.

    “I didn’t think I was ready to make the jump that soon,” Shiga said. “But I was very excited to get the news.”

    She’s been a member of the Japanese national program ever since, playing on four under-18 teams, four senior world championships and qualifying for the 2022 Olympics. In 2019, Shiga made the switch from defense to forward because her coach, Yuji Iizuka thought she could help provide more offense for the team.

    And he was right.

    In 2021, Shiga was one of the breakout stars of the women’s world championships in Calgary, Alta. She scored the opening goal against Hungary in a critical 4-1 win for Japan to make it to the quarterfinals. She became the first Japanese player ever to score against Team USA — and she did it twice. Then, she scored the game-winning goal against Czechia to secure Japan’s best finish (sixth) at women’s worlds. Her four goals tied for fifth among North American stars like Natalie Spooner and Hilary Knight. It was one more than Canada’s Captain Marie-Philip Poulin had in the tournament.

    “She’s a very important part of the team’s success,” Iizuka told IIHF.com “Our teams have always had trouble scoring, so to find someone who can put the puck in the net is very important.”

    After years of adding to her reputation as one of the most talented players outside North America — including a trip to the 2022 Beijing Olympics — it was only natural that Shiga’s name popped up when the PWHL Ottawa front office decided to prioritize bringing in international talent.

    “Obviously there’s a natural tether for me to the international game, and I’ve been lucky to see how talented these players are around the world. So for us it was an easy decision to say, Let’s bring in some international players and see how they do,” MacLeod said. “If they can make it, great. And if they don’t, at least we know that too. But we didn’t want to leave that uncertainty.”

    According to Shiga, Ottawa was the only team to call when PWHL free agency opened in September.

    At training camp, Shiga quickly impressed.

    “I would say two days in, we knew we had something,” Hirshfeld said. “Her skating is off the charts. So is her hockey IQ. I remember Claude Julien (the former NHL coach) was here one day and he was like, ‘Who is that?’”

    “Her skill with the puck catches everyone’s attention because she can maneuver things in a small space that a lot of people can’t,” MacLeod explained. “The puck comes off her stick faster than you anticipate and with a velocity that you’re not sure where that’s all coming from because she’s such a petite player. And she can do it in a phone booth.”

    There was chatter amongst the Ottawa players ahead of camp about a player from Japan trying out for the team. Some national team players would have been familiar with Shiga’s game from world championships or the Olympics. But others, like defender Zoe Boyd, were being introduced to her for the first time.

    She recalls a moment early into training camp where Shiga danced around in the offensive zone and sent a slapshot zinging past her face, bardown and in.

    “Holy crap, this girl is legit,” Boyd thought at the time. “She’s the real deal.”

    “Surprised isn’t the right word to describe it,” she explained. “We’re just amazed by Akane, her play, and what an amazing person she is — in spite of not being able to fluently speak English.”


    When Madoka Suzuki answered the phone on a Thursday afternoon, he was in the car taking Shiga home from one of their errands.

    “Had to do some banking,” he said. “Applying for credit cards and stuff.”

    Bringing Shiga to Ottawa introduced the issue of the language barrier. The PWHL has 14 players from overseas — hailing from countries such as France, Hungary, and Czechia — but most of those players speak at least some English. Shiga did not, so Ottawa knew they’d need an interpreter to make her feel more comfortable and confident at tryouts.

    The team started with a call to the Japanese Embassy, who provided a list of names, but those interpreters would cost around $300 per hour. “No one can afford that,” Hirshfeld said, laughing.

    The team tried calling the universities in the city and connected with Stacey Colarossi, the coach of Carleton’s women’s hockey team, who referred Hirshfeld to Suzuki, a 24-year-old from Japan and a forward on the men’s hockey team.

    As it turned out, Suzuki’s sister, Chihiro, played on the national team with Shiga last year and had already alerted her brother that Shiga had made the move to Ottawa and might need a friend in town. So, when Hirshfeld made the call with a job offer, Suzuki quickly accepted.

    The day Shiga arrived in Ottawa, Suzuki was at the airport to pick her up and bring her to the team hotel. When the team skates, Suzuki is on the ice translating instructions for drills, or messages from the coaching staff. He attends team meetings and games, too, as his schedule allows. If Suzuki has class — he’s a psychology major at Carleton — or is on the road with his hockey team, he will join meetings or interviews over the phone.

    “He understands the teachings from the coaching side and obviously as he’s translating, is giving her information that’s helping her grow and fit within the team side of things,” MacLeod said. “He’s really invaluable when it comes to Akane and Akane feeling included.”

    “We love having Madoka around,” said defender Jincy Roese (née Dunne). “I feel like he’s just one of the girls — as much part of this team as any one of us.”

    Suzuki’s work with Shiga goes beyond the rink. After Shiga made the Ottawa team, she had to fly to Hungary to play in the 4 Nations tournament for Team Japan. While she was there, Suzuki found a realtor to start looking for apartments for Shiga and got all the paperwork done so that when she returned they could find her a place to live as quickly as possible. He’ll take her to the bank to get an account or credit card set up, or to Ikea to buy furniture, or to get food at a restaurant or grocery store.

    “A lot of the ‘work’ I’m doing is more as a friend than anything,” he said. “She’s made it super easy on me too. She’s very enjoyable to work with.”

    Suzuki moved to Canada from Japan with his mom and sister in 2014, when he was 14 years old. He spoke English and had family with him, but he still remembers the difficult adjustment to a new place and new culture.

    “I’m glad I could help her out this way, because otherwise it’s quite the journey to get your feet going up here,” he said.

    Shiga has been using the Duolingo app to learn English. Her teammates have been helping her learn, too. Suzuki will sometimes step back and just let Shiga try to talk without needing the translation. If he’s not around, teammates will use Google Translate if Shiga needs help.

    “She’s really quiet right now, but that’s to be expected,” said Roese. “But you see it there, she’ll speak a little more, she’ll get a little more involved in conversation. You can tell she’s starting to follow along more.”

    Roese has learned some Japanese to help break the language barrier where she can. And MacLeod still knows a few words from her time as an assistant coach with Team Japan.

    “I know the word ‘koko’ (which means here in Japanese), or I know the word hurry or no hesitation,” she said. “There’s certainly something small, small nuggets that obviously I was fortunate enough to pick up when I worked with them for two years. Not enough to actually be smart, but enough to maybe help in moments.”

    Shiga’s teammates “love her,” Hirshfeld said. And several have taken her under their wing to make her feel comfortable and included on the team.

    Boyd and her roommate Kristin Della Rovere will drive Shiga home from the rink, or take her to a teammate’s house if there’s a get-together. They’ve gone for bubble tea and have promised to have Shiga over once she’s settled in so she can see Boyd’s cat, Sam.

    Shiga loves cats and has two back home in Japan named Pickle and Churro. “I miss the cats more than anyone,” she said with a laugh.

    “I can’t imagine what it must be like to come to a country where nobody speaks your language,” Boyd said. “So naturally I just wanted to make sure that she understands things — like everybody did.

    “But Akane is hilarious. Even though she can’t speak English very well, she still makes the funniest jokes and gets her point across. It’s been a pleasure to hang out with her and be a teammate with her.”

    On the ice, Shiga is still adjusting to her first professional season. Through six games, Shiga hasn’t registered a point yet, but nobody in Ottawa is looking at the scoresheet.

    “We’re not even worrying about that,” said Hirshfeld. “She’s getting used to the speed and physicality of this league, but I know she’s got the hockey IQ to work through it. She’s a great skater, which I think is a great advantage in this league. We’re very optimistic.”

    Shiga has impressed in games with her skating and hands in tight with the puck. MacLeod says she works hard in practice and has already seen Shiga’s game grow in Ottawa. It seems like only a matter of time before she scores her first PWHL goal.

    “I’ve never seen somebody that can rip the puck like she can,” Roese said. “Just bardown from anywhere.”

    Shiga is also one of the most popular players in Ottawa. “I think she got the second loudest cheer after (Brianne) Jenner,” MacLeod said about the home-opener intros.

    The Ambassador of Japan to Canada attended Ottawa’s home opener. There have been several Shiga signs spotted in the stands, and plenty of fan mail sent to her home — something Shiga says started after she played in the Olympics.

    “She’s 22 years old,” MacLeod said. “Think of all the variables: youngest in the league, playing in a country, in a league that’s not native tongue to her, and she just keeps rising. What an incredible human being.”

    Shiga hopes her sister, a 24-year-old defender playing in Switzerland, can join the league next season. The two were signed to play together with the Buffalo Beauts in the PHF before the league folded last season. More than anything, she hopes more players from Japan can follow in her footsteps.

    “To be able to pave the path for younger players and give them someone to look up to — to say, you can be from Japan and play hockey — is a huge honor,” she said. “And I’m just very excited for what the future holds.”

    Salvian: There’s no world juniors for women. What would it take to make it happen?

    The top under-20 men’s players from Czechia, Finland, Sweden and the United States will vie for a spot in the gold medal game during the semifinals of the 2024 World Junior Championship on Thursday.

    The best women in that age group won’t have the chance. They never have.

    Since 1977 the IIHF has sanctioned a men’s world juniors. The world’s best female hockey players compete in annual under-18 and senior national championships, tournaments which began years after their male counterparts. And even though the women’s game is rapidly growing — look no further than what will be a multi-million dollar investment into the professional game with the PWHL — there is still no women’s world juniors.

    That’s something Team Canada and Team USA general managers Gina Kingsbury and Katie Million want to change.

    “The U20 group is the missing piece,” Million said in an interview with The Athletic. “It’s been (our) dream to make this happen.”

    There have been discussions with the IIHF about a potential women’s world juniors within the last year, Million said, but in recent committee meetings the idea has been voted down largely because other nations outside the U.S. and Canada aren’t ready to add another team to their women’s programming.

    It’s true that Canada and the U.S. have dominated at the under-18 level, just as their senior teams have — no other nation has won a U18 gold medal since the tournament started in 2008. But there has been noticeable growth. Last year, Sweden beat Team USA in the semifinals and won a second silver medal after making it to the gold medal game for the first time in 2018. And it was Nela Lopušanová, a 14-year-old from Slovakia, who was the star of the 2023 tournament.

    Lopušanová might be the most obvious example of growth in international women’s hockey. If the IIHF had decided women’s hockey wasn’t ready for a U18 tournament all those years ago, Lopušanová probably wouldn’t have become one of the most exciting young players to watch right now.

    “We have to start somewhere,” Million said.

    The main critique of all levels of women’s international hockey has typically been that Canada and the U.S. are going to win everything, so what’s the point? It’s a stale argument.

    Because what’s also true is that two countries have dominated the men’s world juniors over its nearly 50-year history. Canada and Russia, or formerly the Soviet Union and CIS teams, have won 33 of the 47 gold medals since the tournament officially began. Canada, with 20, has won nearly half of the possible championships and only missed the podium a 13 times. Only six teams have ever won over five decades of competition.

    Since 2013, only Canada (5), Finland (3), and the U.S. (3) have won gold.

    If you’re OK with two or three teams dominating a men’s tournament, why is it a problem when it happens with women?

    Team Canada has been dominant at the world juniors — their early exit at this year’s tournament notwithstanding — and this has become entwined with national pride and making hockey “Canada’s Game.” Why do we celebrate this, and then use Canadian women’s dominance as a reason to not play?

    It’s entirely possible, even with two teams at the top, to grow interest in a niche product. That’s what the men’s world juniors was before TSN bought the rights in 1991. Now it’s must-see TV, particularly in Canada because of the team’s dominance and TSN’s investment.

    “It’s a spectacle here in Canada,” said Canadian Olympian Sarah Nurse. “And I think that speaks to TSN, the media and how they’ve been able to spin a tournament into this Canadian tradition. I think we can do the same thing with women’s events.”

    With the right partners, and money, of course.

    But besides all that, a women’s world juniors would be vital for the overall health of women’s hockey and would provide a critical — and missing — opportunity for development.

    Under-18 or -19 female hockey players, for the most part, are well served. There are club team championships and U18 nationals in Canada. USA Hockey has national championships for 19U girls. And, of course, there’s the IIHF under-18 world championships.

    But very few players in North America can jump from U18s or high school hockey right to the senior women’s national team — Marie-Philip Poulin, who went from U18 worlds to senior worlds in 2008-09, is one of the few to have done it — which creates a large gap in opportunity for the top players in the sport. Team USA and Canada have played an under-22 series since 1999 — it’s now called the collegiate series — but that’s typically only three games played in August.

    “Those kids that are on a U18 team, we don’t see them again until they’re maybe junior, senior in college or post-grad,” Million explained. “It only helps our development of those players to have that touch point when they’re younger and keep them in our culture and playing our systems.”

    An under-20 team would expose decision-makers in the game to a potentially different set of players at a critical point in their careers, or provide more touch points for the development of stars from their under-18 years. Players are different at 19 years old than they are at 17 — some take off, others might go the other way — but there is no perfect way for national teams to track that progress other than scouting college teams.

    “There is almost this forgotten group of players,” said Nurse. “You see girls at 16, 17, 18 years old and send them off to college. And they have to hope that our GM or scouts are at games at the right times and are talking to the right people.”

    Take Claire Thompson as a recent example. The Canadian defender did not make an under-18 national team before heading off to Princeton in 2016 and was only spotted by Team Canada scouts who were sent to watch her teammate Sarah Fillier. Thompson was quickly invited to the under-22 team and went on to set a record at the 2022 Olympics for points by a defender.

    “Imagine a player like that slipping through the cracks,” said Nurse.

    It would also provide the opportunity for players who are too old for U18s and just outside the senior team to continue to play important games.

    At 19 years old, Laila Edwards has already made history as the first Black woman to play for Team USA and is expected to become one of the faces of the game — in due time. She should be squarely in the mix to make the 2024 world championship roster, but if she’s not quite ready she won’t have any national team opportunities until USA Hockey’s annual August training camp. And then she wouldn’t play in international competition until the 2025 worlds, should she make that roster.

    Of course someone like Edwards can continue to develop in college, but it would only aid her development to get into competitive international games.

    Player development is not just about Team Canada and Team USA anymore, either. Not with the first-ever PWHL season officially underway. Men’s world juniors offers not just one of the most prestigious stages for young hockey players, but an opportunity to significantly boost their draft stock heading into the NHL Draft.

    Let’s consider TSN for a moment again. The network promotes the world juniors as an opportunity to watch the future legends of the game before they become legends. One promo for the 2023 world juniors said, “Before they were household names they were here on TSN.”

    Women’s hockey players should be afforded the same opportunity, to not just grow as players, but to announce themselves on a big stage. Fans, too, deserve to know who to watch for, or who to hope their favorite team drafts in the first round of the PWHL Draft.

    So, what next? And what could this look like?

    At first, it could be as simple as Canada and the U.S. expanding their national team offerings. Each summer, Canada’s U18 and Collegiate teams face off in a mini-series. Maybe they could add an under-20 — next generation — rivalry series to the mix.

    Or maybe, instead of a 10-team tournament like the men’s world juniors, it’s a smaller number of teams like a Four Nations tournament, but for the under-20 age group. Maybe it’s a World Cup-style tournament with teams from Canada, the United States and Europe. The latter option would allow top players — like Lopušanová — from countries that might not have enough U20 players for a full roster to be in the mix.

    What a women’s world junior offering might look like remains to be seen. The timing is even more challenging to predict.

    Hopefully these decisions are made soon, though. Because every year that goes by is another missed opportunity to grow the game.

    TORONTO — The line began at the gates of Mattamy Athletic Centre and stretched a full city block. Women’s hockey fans, after decades of waiting for a best-on-best league, were happy to wait a little longer for the doors to open for the first-ever Professional Women’s Hockey League game.

    The line was dotted with reminders of the past. There was a Natalie Spooner Toronto Furies jersey from her time in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League. Several Toronto Six jerseys representing the Premier Hockey Federation and some from the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association exhibition stops. The people wearing those jerseys from previous eras of women’s professional hockey were on their way into the old Maple Leaf Gardens to celebrate something new: the inaugural game of the PWHL between Toronto and New York.

    Later, inside the arena, two young girls were locked in. Ella Shelton was on the ice, and the girls — who wore matching Shelton jerseys and waved homemade signs — wanted her attention. Not long before New York left the ice, Shelton finally locked in on them and flipped them a puck.

    She made their day. Less than an hour later, she made history.

    The Team Canada defender from Ingersoll, Ont., scored the first-ever PWHL goal less than 11 minutes into the game. The puck and her stick are headed for the Hockey Hall of Fame.

    “We’ve come a long way as women’s players and we’re very excited to be a part of that historical moment,” Shelton said after the game.

    “I hope that young girls look up and go, ‘I want to do that one day and be just like her and play in this league.’”

    New York ultimately won the game 4-0 — starting goalie Corinne Schroeder’s stick is Hall of Fame-bound, too. The game, between two teams featuring the best players in the world, was a long time coming. The league itself came together in a six-month sprint — a whirlwind of logistics, decision-making and, occasionally, compromises.

    How do you build a pro sports league in just half a year? The Athletic talked to the people behind the scenes — from the league-builders to the players and staff — to find out.


    Kendall Coyne Schofield gave birth to her son on July 1. If he’d been born any sooner, the landscape of women’s professional hockey might look much different than it does today.

    “If Drew came earlier I don’t know if we’d be here,” Brianne Jenner said with a laugh. “She was that integral.”

    Instead, Coyne Schofield had her son the day before the PWHL and the players’ union ratified a landmark collective bargaining agreement on July 2 — a document that Coyne Schofield “was an engine” behind, according to Jenner, and spent her second and third trimesters negotiating.

    There were definitely late nights, early mornings, constant emails, constant phone calls,” Coyne Schofield said. “Every sentence, every word, every letter was so important to all of us.”

    The players’ union was officially formed in February 2023, months before Mark and Kimbra Walter purchased the PHF, the league ceased operations, and a new women’s pro hockey league was announced in its place. CBA negotiations began shortly after between future league leadership — including Stan Kasten, Billie Jean King and Ilana Kloss — and a player-led bargaining committee that included Coyne Schofield, Jenner, Hilary Knight, Sarah Nurse and Liz Knox.

    According to Kasten, it was Mark Walter, billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and PWHL owner, who really wanted the players to organize and have a collective bargaining agreement “so that the problems we’re trying to fix are memorialized.” Starting with a CBA — which had never been done in a major women’s professional sports league — was part of the players’ long-term vision for the league, too.

    “So often what we’ve seen in other professional women’s sports leagues is they start off with a league and they’re told, ‘These are the conditions in which you’re going to participate and you don’t have another option, and be grateful for what you have and go play,’” Coyne Schofield said. “We didn’t want to be like that. We wanted to start with our voices at the table and work to build this together.”

    And while the process was highly collaborative, it still took around six months to finalize, given they were drafting a document from scratch. Some weeks, the two sides breezed through multiple items. Other times, the process would stall. There were some contentious moments, of course, but also funny ones. Coyne Schofield recalled that when players asked for meals to be provided after games and training, they were met with surprise.

    “They were like, yeah, obviously, you have to eat,” she said, laughing. “But that hadn’t been obvious to date.”

    The eight-year CBA is over 40 pages, with 30 articles covering everything from player salaries and player-related expenses; benefits; player movement; travel; and safety and working conditions. Specific items covered in the document range from league-minimum salaries to meals, hotel accommodations, per diem, housing, relocation expenses, health insurance, pregnancy benefits, parental leave, a 401(k) program, nursing accommodations and more.

    “If we weren’t working with people on the other side that had the best intentions for this league and for these players, the CBA wouldn’t look how it looks,” said Coyne Schofield.


    League leaders gave themselves roughly six months.

    The announcement of the PHF acquisition and the Walters’ plans for a new women’s league came on June 30. While they had considered a potential league start in 2024-25, PWHL leaders ultimately decided on a January 2024 puck drop — even though launching a single expansion franchise in professional sports usually takes two to three years from conception to play.

    “We owed it to the athletes to get on the ice and to have a league,” said Royce Cohen, who leads business strategy for the Dodgers and was tapped to help with the PWHL“And we felt confident that we were going to be able to deliver an improved product.”

    The work truly began on July 1, 2023, though Cohen says they did some league-building during the CBA and acquisition talks — examining markets and venues and discussing a marketing strategy.

    PWHL season previews: How do the teams stack up heading into the first season?

    The first item on the to-do list was to finalize the original six markets. Discussions had begun in May, and the league spent time looking at everything from population figures to youth hockey participation, women’s hockey history and existing infrastructure across 20 potential markets. Facilities were a major part of the process, as the league had certain standards of professionalism — and availability — it needed to meet.

    A women’s pro hockey arena shouldn’t be too big to fill, but it also shouldn’t be so small as to put a ceiling on ticket revenue. You need adequate locker rooms for players. Training facilities. Prime ice-time windows — gone are the days of 10 p.m. practices. Venues, whether training or game facilities, need to be “appropriate for professional/international hockey,” according to the CBA.

    Eventually, the league landed on Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Minnesota, Boston and New York. That wasn’t the original “original six,” either. According to multiple PWHL sources, the league looked at Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., and London, Ont., among others.

    The original six markets were announced in August. Venues weren’t announced until three months later. The delay, Cohen said, was due to signing agreements with the venues — not choosing them. Once the markets were finalized, the league hired six general managers, who then hired their own coaches and team staff. The league also built out its business staff. Some were hired from the PHF or PWHPA. Others came from places like the WNBA, MLB and other professional sports leagues.

    The league put together the plan for the Sept. 18 draft in just three weeks, starting at the end of August. The inaugural schedule was released on Nov. 30, barely one month before the start of the season.

    There have been some hiccups, of course. The league’s merchandise was criticized for its high price point and lack of inclusive sizing. All six teams are starting the season without team nicknames or logos. Instead, teams will play with their market names printed diagonally across their jerseys. According to Amy Scheer, the PWHL’s senior vice president of business operations, team branding was too important to fit into the league’s tight schedule.

    “There are decisions you can make that are fast and if you make an error in your judgment on that decision, it’s easy to walk back, or you can learn from it and move on,” said Scheer, who assumed her role on Oct. 31. “From the team name perspective, it was just better off slowing the process down.”

    “(When) you challenge yourself to do something in six months, you really find out what is necessary versus ‘nice to have,’” added Cohen. “We anticipate that people expect a more traditional sort of nickname and mascot and all that fun stuff, which we have been and we will continue to work on prioritizing where it goes in the list of things to do.”


    PWHL general managers had just over three months to build their teams — through free agency, the draft and two waiver periods. For Danielle Marmer, the first order of business was convincing Hilary Knight to sign with Boston.

    The GM and future Hockey Hall of Fame forward had conversations when PWHL free agency officially opened on Sept. 1. Marmer, she said, could tell Knight wanted to be in Boston, but Marmer needed to sell her on the environment that she, as the first general manager of the Boston franchise, was going to create.

    So, Marmer painted a picture of the sports town Knight spent five years in at the start of her professional career — and of why it would be the perfect place in which to, eventually, finish it off.

    “If you want to be an elite athlete, you want to do it in Boston,” she told Knight. “The superstars in Boston are the athletes and this is a market that is exciting to be in.

    “Think about your legacy and where you are in your career right now,” she added. “Where do you want to finish it out?”

    Knight signed a three-year deal with Boston, along with defender Megan Keller and goalie Aerin Frankel. Initially, Marmer didn’t think she would sign a goalie as one of her first three free-agent contracts. And in the days leading up to free agency, the scuttlebutt was that if any goalies were signed it would likely be Ann-Renée Desbiens — and only Desbiens. With so much talent at the position, the thought was that teams would simply wait for the draft.

    That was Marmer’s thought until she did more digging. Even though the top goalies in the sport are all excellent, there was, of course, still a ranking within them. Marmer, after spending last season working for the Boston Bruins who have two elite goalies in Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman, didn’t want to be outside the top tier at a critical position. Waiting until the draft was too much of a risk.

    “I wanted to make sure I had a lock in each position,” she said. “I was very excited with what I got to start with.”

    The question after free agency was how to build around those foundational pieces through the 15-round draft on Sept. 18.

    The plan was to balance the best available players with positional need and to ensure the team wasn’t getting caught up in positional runs. For example, if there was a run on defenders, they would get in only if the right player was still on the board. If there was a drop-off to the next tier of players, the team would take advantage of the focus on defense and grab a top forward.

    “If you’re just following each run, you’re never going to head,” she said. “So it was like, let’s take what they give us, let’s be totally prepared, and totally flexible.”

    Boston’s draft began with the easy selection of Swiss star Alina Müller as the No. 3 pick. It was no secret that Minnesota was going to take Taylor Heise at No. 1 but Toronto taking Jocelyne Larocque at No. 2 was the best-case scenario for Marmer, she said.

    Marmer got in on the run on defenders in the second round, selecting Sophie Jaques, the offensive right-shot defender from Ohio State University. One of the team’s biggest debates came in the third round. There, Marmer hoped to get one of Hannah Brandt or Loren Gabel. When Jamie Lee Rattray was still on the board — they believed she’d be taken by Ottawa by then — Marmer swerved to take the Canadian Swiss army knife forward, at the behest of coach Courtney Kessel.

    “We thought when we picked Rattray that we were going to miss out on Gabel and Brandt,” Marmer said.

    Boston ended up with all three, along with other stellar picks like Theresa Schafzahl (Round 7), Taylor Girard (Round 9), Emma Söderberg (Round 10), Sophie Shirley (Round 11) and Shiann Darkangelo (Round 12).

    That draft class is a big reason why Boston has widely been viewed as the team to beat this season. They are deep, with a ton of top talent at every position and a GM with a vision for not just her team on the ice, but the environment she’s hoping to create off it. Marmer signed all of her draft picks heading into training camp and didn’t invite too many players to camp. She felt comfortable with the work they did in the draft and wanted players to feel confident and settled heading into the season. And she wanted the focus of training camp to be on preparing for the season — not as much about tryouts.

    “The team that comes together the quickest is going to be the most successful this season,” she said. “The decision to sign them was to show them we believe in them. Have players figure out what kind of apartment they can go look for, how much they’re making, make sure they’re not in the middle of training camp and trying to build their Ikea bed.”


    For many PWHL players, the start of the league required major changes.

    Some, like Toronto captain Blayre Turnbull, moved across the country. Ottawa’s Akane Shiga made the move from Japan to play in Canada’s capital city.

    For Kali Flanagan, joining the PWHL came with an unexpected departure.

    Flanagan, 28, had spent her entire hockey career in Boston, moving up the youth hockey ranks to a stellar career at Boston College and a defender of the year award while playing for the PHF’s Boston Pride in 2023. So it came as a bit of a surprise when Toronto stepped up in the sixth round of the PWHL Draft to select her.

    “My initial reaction was, ‘Oh my God, a new adventure,’” Flanagan said“I couldn’t have been more excited.”

    In October, Flanagan signed a two-year contract with Toronto — which wasn’t announced until Nov. 10 by the league — moved out of her shared apartment with his sister, Kristine, and started apartment hunting in a new city — and country — for the first time.

    Her new Toronto teammates were a big help, she said, pointing her in the direction of good neighborhoods and recommending spots to eat. Renata Fast, one of Toronto’s foundational free-agent signings, helped connect Flanagan — and other teammates — to a realtor who was a “huge” help.

    Michael Ouzas, who played professional hockey with Fast’s husband, viewed apartments for Flanagan while she was still in Boston and FaceTimed her to show her the spaces. With his help, she found a spot quickly and moved in November, two weeks before the start of training camp, and “spent a lot of time building Ikea furniture.”

    The timing allowed Flanagan to find a home and get settled, versus living in a hotel while trying to earn a spot on the roster. That was by design from Kingsbury, who wanted the athletes they knew would be on Toronto’s first roster to have peace of mind and a level of comfort in a new place before the start of training camp.

    “It definitely helped,” Flanagan said. “I just think this team and staff and the environment that they’ve created for us so far has been amazing. It feels like a really special atmosphere.”

    On Monday afternoon, fans got their first glimpse of a league that was built quickly, but with the goal of longevity.

    The puzzle pieces have been put together. Now it’s time to see what the PWHL can really be.
