  • No. 11 Duke holds off No. 21 North Carolina in women’s Battle of the Blues showdown

The No. 11 Duke Blue Devils held off a late surge from the No. 21 North Carolina Tar Heels to secure a women’s Battle of the Blues win 72-68 Sunday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

It was a heated matchup from opening tip to the final buzzer, with 16 lead changes between the two games. The Blue Devils (19-6, 14-0 ACC) were powered by a 13-0 run at the end of the first half for the lead, which the Blue Devils held onto until the end.

As a team, the Tar Heels (21-6, 10-4 ACC) did everything they could to find open players on the court, tallying 19 assists on the day. Elina Aarnisalo and Lanie Grant had five each, tying Grant’s career-high and Aarnisalo’s season-best.

After North Carolina made it a two-point game late in the 4th quarter, Ashlon Jackson drained her lone three of the day to stretch Duke’s lead back to five, 61-56. However,  Grant responded with three of her own to make it a one-possession game again with over seven minutes to play.

The Blue Devils then buckled down on defense for the final seven minutes of the game, holding the Tar Heels to just 11 points in that stretch, including five points in the final two minutes of the game.

Up next, the Tar Heels travel to Blacksburg for a Thursday night showdown at Virginia Tech, while the Blue Devils close their three-game homestand against NC State on Thursday at 7 p.m.

  • No. 3 South Carolina beats No. 6 LSU 79-72, extending winning streak against the Tigers to 18 games

BATON ROUGE, La. — Tessa Johnson scored 21 points as No. 3 South Carolina beat No. 6 LSU 79-72 on Saturday night and extended its winning streak over the Tigers to 18 games.

Trailing 73-72, LSU had a chance to take a one-point lead with 45.5 seconds left, but Flau’jae Johnson missed two free throws.

South Carolina (25-2, 11-1 SEC) closed out the Tigers (22-4, 8-4) by scoring six straight points, including Madina Okot’s layup with 25.5 seconds left and her two free throws with 16.1 seconds remaining.

Raven Johnson added 19 for the Gamecocks, Okot had a double-double with 12 points and 17 rebounds, and Joyce Edwards scored 10 points.

Johnson led LSU with 21 points, and Mikaylah Williams added 11.

The Tigers had their chances, but wasted too many opportunities. They missed 10 layups and nine free throws.

Despite leading for only 4:09 in the first half, South Carolina flipped LSU’s 21-16 first-quarter lead into a 41-40 halftime advantage.

The Tigers led by as many as five points several times in the second quarter, but never could pull away. Despite Johnson scoring eight points, the Gamecocks countered with 5-for-9 shooting from 3-point range in the period.

Tessa Johnson and Raven Johnson combined for 19 of South Carolina’s 25 points in the second period. Tessa Johnson, the SEC’s leading 3-point shooter, scored 11 points and was 3 for 4 from long distance.

LSU scored on layups on four straight possessions, two by Flau’Jae Johnson, forcing the Gamecocks to call a timeout with 3:44 left and clinging to a 69-68 lead. But South Carolina never lost the lead.

  • NYU women’s basketball team sets Division III record with 82nd straight win

NYU won its 82nd straight game to set the Division III record for consecutive victories by a women’s basketball team, beating Carnegie Mellon 69-58 on Sunday.

The Violets (20-0) broke a tie with rival Washington University of St. Louis, which won 81 games in a row from 1998-2001.

UConn holds the overall NCAA record for consecutive wins with a 111-game streak. The Huskies also have the second-longest streak, a 90-game run.

Caroline Peper scored 27 points to lead the way for two-time defending national champion NYU, which had to work hard for the record-breaking win.

The two teams went back and forth in the first half and NYU led 32-29 at the break on a 3-pointer by Brooke Batchelor a few seconds before the end of the second quarter.

Peper and Batchelor hit consecutive 3-pointers early in the third quarter to start a 17-6 run to go up by double digits. The Tartans closed to within 56-51 midway through the fourth quarter, but Zahra Alexander, who scored all seven of her points in the final quarter, answered with consecutive layups to extend the cushion and make it 60-53 with 3:19 left.

Peper then hit a 3-pointer just before the shot-clock buzzer with just over two minutes left to seal the win.

Sunday’s game was a rematch from a week ago. NYU topped Carnegie Mellon (12-7) by just one point in that game. That had been the closest a team had come to defeat the Violets during this run. No team previously came within 12 points this season.

During the historic streak, only three other teams have come within single digits of the Violets: U Chicago lost by six, Whittier by eight and Case Western Reserve by eight two days ago.

Now with the record in hand, the Violets are focused on trying to win a fifth straight UAA Conference title and potentially a third consecutive national championship. Only Wash U has done that, when the school won four consecutive titles from 1998-2001.

Peper is the only player on the roster to have lost a game in college at NYU. She was a freshman on the team that was beaten by Transylvania in the Elite Eight of the Division III NCAA Tournament.

    The Violets haven’t lost since.

  • Aaliyah Chavez scored 17 points to help No. 8 Oklahoma rout cold-shooting Mississippi State 95-47

NORMAN, Okla. — Aaliyah Chavez scored 17 points and Zya Vann added 16 and 11 rebounds to help No. 8 Oklahoma rout cold-shooting Mississippi State 95-47 on Sunday.

Raegan Beers chipped in 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Sooners (14-1, 2-0 Southeastern Conference), who had a 64-37 rebound advantage. Six players scored in double figures for the Sooners, who have won 13 straight, the second-longest streak in program history behind a 20-game run by the 2008-09 Final Four team.

Kharyssa Richardson scored 13 points off the bench for Mississippi State (14-2, 1-1), which lost for the first time since Nov. 20. The Bulldogs made 14 of 70 shots (20%) and one of 25 shots from behind the 3-point line (4%).

Oklahoma set a program record for lowest shooting percentage by a conference opponent. The previous mark was 20.7% by Texas Tech of the Big 12 Conference in 2014.

The Bulldogs made just two of their first 19 shots (11%) and trailed 21-8 after one quarter. OU extended the lead to 29-10 on a layup by Beers early in the second. Three straight baskets by Mississippi State — including a 3-pointer by Crisp — cut the deficit to 29-17.

But the Bulldogs scored only five points after that and trailed 48-22 at halftime. Mississippi State made 7 of 37 shots before the break.

The second half didn’t get much better. Oklahoma limited the Bulldogs to 13 points and extended the advantage to 62-24 on a 3-point play by Caya Smith with 5:41 left in the third quarter. A 20-2 run by OU in the fourth made it 92-40.

  • Morgan’s last-second 3-pointer lifts No. 11 Kentucky over No. 5 LSU 80-78 as Kiffin looks on

BATON ROUGE, La. — Tonie Morgan hit a 3-pointer with 0.5 seconds left to lift No. 11 Kentucky to an 80-78 win over No. 5 and previously unbeaten LSU on Thursday night.

It was a stunning loss before a crowd of 11,485 that included new LSU football coach Lane Kiffin, who walked hand-in-hand with Tigers’ coach Kim Mulkey onto the floor before the game.

Morgan, a Georgia Tech transfer, led the Wildcats (14-1, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Asia Boone had 18 points, including five 3-pointers; Teonni Key added 17 points and 16 rebounds; and Clara Strack had 15 points.

Mikaylah Williams had 26 points to lead the Tigers (14-1, 0-1). Flau’jae Johnson had 15 points while Jada Richard and Amiya Joiner had 14 apiece.

Morgan’s clutch basket came after Williams hit three free throws for a 78-77 lead with 18.5 seconds left.

UK’s front line height — Strack and Key are both 6-foot-5 — gave LSU a challenge it hadn’t faced this season.

Almost half of LSU’s nation-leading 108 points per game have come from second-chance (26.3 points per game) and fast-break (27.5) points.

But because LSU lost the rebound battle 45-29 for just the second time this season and could only force a season-low 10 turnovers, the Tigers had just four second-chance points and 13 fast-break points.

Williams scored 10 of LSU’s first 14 points as the Tigers roared to a 12-point lead in the first four minutes.

Boone’s third 3-pointer of the first half gave Kentucky its largest lead at 30-25 with 7:39 left in the second quarter. The Tigers responded with a 9-0 run for a 34-30 advantage with 4:57 left, heading toward a 41-41 halftime tie.

Entering the fourth quarter with a 65-60 lead, LSU never led by more than seven points.

Kentucky: At home vs. Missouri on Sunday.

LSU: At No. 11 Vanderbilt on Sunday.

Briana Peguero scored 14 and Jade Jones added 11 points off the bench for Houston (6-7, 0-2). The Cougars shot 38%.

  • No. 7 Maryland routs winless Central Connecticut State 98-30 despite injury issues

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Yarden Garzon scored 12 of her 25 points in the first quarter, and No. 7 Maryland routed Central Connecticut State 98-30 on Friday.

To the delight of the screaming kids in attendance for the team’s annual Field Trip Day game, Terrapins coach Brenda Frese wore a jersey with the number 67 on it before tip-off. Then Maryland nearly won by that margin.

The blowout was no surprise. Maryland entered the game as one of 12 unbeaten teams left in Division I, and Central Connecticut State was one of 10 without a victory. The Terps (13-0) scored the game’s first 10 points and led 39-14 after one quarter.

Garzon made four 3-pointers in the first period.

Oluchi Okananwa had 22 points and Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu, who appeared to hobble on her right leg before leaving the game in the fourth quarter, had 10 points and nine rebounds. Ozzy-Momodu said after the game she’s OK.

Lucia Noin led Central Connecticut State (0-11) with 12 points.

Maryland guard Saylor Poffenbarger has been dealing with an ankle injury, and she sat out Friday as a planned rest day before the team returns to conference play. The Terrapins have lost Lea Bartelme, Ava McKennie and Kaylene Smikle to season-ending knee injuries, and Bri McDaniel, who tore her ACL 11 months ago, now plans to redshirt this season.

After the Terps took a 64-18 lead, they attempted five straight 3-pointers before Garzon finally made one to gave Maryland exactly 67 points. That drew an excited response from the crowd, as expected.

Central Connecticut State: Hosts Long Island University on Jan. 2.

Maryland: Hosts Wisconsin on Dec. 29.
