If you want added security or parental controls, Asus offers those with no additional monthly fee.

    We were impressed with the RT-BE58U’s range right out of the box, with our reviewer Simon Hill saying it covered his two-story, 1,600-square-foot home without any extra help, although he noted that sometimes devices would switch to the slower 2.4-GHz band at the edges of the range. If you think you’ll need extra coverage for your larger-than-average house, you can use Asus’ AiMesh feature to easily add extra routers or range extenders to your setup.

    Of course, it still has all the wired connections you’d expect from a modern router, with three gigabit LAN ports, 2.5- and 1-gigabit WAN ports, one of which is also a LAN port, and USB WAN for 4G LTE and 5G mobile tethering.   • How to Switch to Google Fi

    All of the prices above are for a single line paid monthly. Google periodically offers half off and other specials, usually only if you bring your own phone.

    Activate Your Chip

    Once you’ve picked your plan and signed up, Google will mail out a SIM card. It took a couple of days for my physical SIM to arrive, but I’ll gladly take the slight delay if it saves me from setting foot in a physical carrier store. If you’re using an iPhone, Google Pixel, Samsung phone, or other device that supports eSIM, you can set up Fi with an eSIM instantly.

    Once your chip arrives, you’ll need to use a SIM tool to pull out the SIM tray and insert the SIM card into your phone. Then, download the Google Fi app (you’ll need to be on Wi-Fi to do this since your chip won’t connect to the network yet), and follow the steps there. If you’re porting in your old phone number, it may take a little longer. For me, after setting up a new number, Fi was up and running after about 5 minutes. That’s it, you’re done.

    I have traveled and lived in rural areas for the past 7 years, and I’ve tried just about every phone and hotspot plan around—none of them are anywhere near this simple. The only one that comes close is Red Pocket Mobile, which I still use in addition to Google Fi. There are cheaper plans out there, but in terms of ease of use and reliability, Fi is hard to beat.

    Using Google Fi as a Hotspot

    You can use Google Fi as a simple way to add cellular connectivity to any device that accepts a SIM card, like a mobile hotspot. You’ll need to activate your Google Fi SIM card with a phone using the Google Fi app, but once the activation is done, you can put that chip in any device your plan allows. If you go with the Unlimited Plus plan, that means you can put your chip in an iPad, Android tablet, or a 4G/5G mobile hotspot. You are still bound by the 50-gigabyte data limit, though, so make sure you don’t go too crazy with Netflix.

    Alternatively, consider ordering a data-only SIM. Google allows you to have up to four if you’re on the Unlimited Premium or Flexible plans, meaning you can keep four gadgets—a spare phone or tablet—connected to the internet. The caveat is that they can’t place phone calls or receive texts. You don’t have to use your phone to activate the SIM first. You can order a data-only SIM in the Plan section of your account, under Devices & subscriptions. If you have an eSIM-only device you want to connect, you can tap Connect your tablet and Fi will offer a QR code you can scan to activate the SIM.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    • Do I need a Google account? Yes, you do need a Google account to sign up for Google Fi, but you don’t need to be all-in on Google to use Fi. I have an Android phone, and I use Google apps since that’s what we use here at WIRED, but outside of work I do not use any Google services other than Fi, and it still works great.
    • Is Google Fi tracking my every move? Yes, but so is your current provider. Google Fi’s terms of service say Google doesn’t sell what’s known as customer proprietary network information—things like call location, details, and features you use—to anyone else.
    • I’m traveling and want to use Google Fi abroad. Will that work? Fi’s terms of service require you to activate your service in the US, but after that, in theory, it should work anywhere Fi has partnered with an in-country network. WIRED editor Julian Chokkattu has used Fi in multiple countries while traveling. However, based on feedback from WIRED readers, and reading through travel forums, it seems that most people are being cut off if they’re out of the US for more than a few weeks. I would say don’t plan on using Google Fi to fulfill your digital nomad dreams.

    Tips and Tricks

    There are several features available through the Google Fi app you might not discover at first. One of my favorites is an old Google Voice feature that allows you to forward calls to any phone you like. This is also possible in Google Fi. All you need to do is add a number to Fi’s forwarding list, and any time you get a call, it will ring both your cell phone and that secondary number—whether it’s a home phone, second cell, or the phone at the Airbnb you’re at. This is very handy in places where your signal strength is iffy—just route the call to a landline. Similarly, it can be worth enabling the Wi-Fi calling feature for times when you have access to Wi-Fi but not a cell signal.

    Another feature that’s becoming more and more useful as the number of spam calls I get goes ever upward is call blocking. Android and iOS calling apps can block calls, but that sends the caller directly to voicemail, and you still end up getting the voicemail. Block a call through the Google Fi app, and the callers get a message saying your number has been disconnected or is no longer in service. As far as they know, you’ve changed numbers. To set this up, open the Fi app and look under Privacy & security > Manage contact settings > Manage blocked numbers, and then you can add any number you like to the list. If you change your mind, just delete the listing.

    One final thing worth mentioning: I have not canceled my Google Fi service despite switching to Starlink for most of my hotspot needs. Instead, I just suspended my Fi service using the app. That way, should I need it for some reason, I can reactivate it very quickly.

    Some Apple AirPods wireless headphones can be used as hearing aids with a new software update available in October. It’s a high-profile move that experts applaud, even if they only reach a small portion of the millions of Americans with hearing loss.

    An estimated 30 million people — 1 in 8 Americans over the age of 12 — have hearing loss in both ears. Millions would benefit from hearing aids but most have never tried them, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. Countless others have tried them, but don’t use them because of cost, poor quality, poor fit, how they look or for other reasons.

    Over the past few years, there’s been a push to change that. Two years ago, federal rules changed to allow hearing aids to be sold over-the-counter, a move that many hoped would bring better and cheaper options to patients. And last month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved software from Apple that would turn AirPods Pro 2 into hearing aids.

    It’s unclear yet whether the rule changed has helped, experts say. But turning AirPods into hearing aids is the kind of creative move advocates had hoped for. Here’s what to know about hearing loss, hearing aids, and Apple’s new option.

    Hearing loss can contribute to isolation, dementia, even fall risk

    About 15% of Americans report some difficulty hearing. Most people with hearing loss are over 60, but hearing problems don’t only affect older people. One study found men and people living in rural areas are more likely to have hearing loss.

    And it has been linked to many health effects beyond the ear. It contributes to isolation, depression and cognitive decline, experts say. It raises dementia risk and rewires the brain. It’s also been linked to an increased risk of falls — a major health concern among older adults.

    “Everything we do, all our relationships, whether it’s personal or in our work life, involve hearing conversation,” said Barbara Kelley, executive director of Hearing Loss Association of America. “We’re finding now that the sooner that people can pay attention to their hearing health, the better.”

    You don’t need to see a doctor to get a hearing aid

    Before the 2022 rule change by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, everyone had to see a doctor and get a prescription for a hearing aid to get one. Now, they’re available without one.

    “As more of them are sold, then hopefully the price will go down,” said Elizabeth Stangl, an audiologist at the University of Iowa. “But we haven’t seen a big rush to get them.”

    Even buying over-the-counter, a decent hearing aid can easily run you $400 to $500, said Stangl, who researches how well people adjust to using hearing aids. And some of the less expensive options are really just “cheap amplifiers,” lacking the personalized level settings and noise canceling features that really make hearing aids helpful.

    How does the Apple AirPods hearing aid feature work?

    The hearing aid feature is available with AirPods Pro 2 models, and requires an iPhone or iPad to set it up. It starts with built-in tests that will help users determine if they have hearing loss, set up the feature if they do, and set personalized amplification levels.

    The headphones sell for $249 on Apple’s website, and sometimes less from other retailers.

    While there are many other earbud-type devices that can function the same way, experts agreed that the AirPods addition is a good one, simply because of the way it could help normalize hearing aids.

    “It’s just mainstream,” Kelley said. The ubiquity of AirPods could make people worried about the look of a hearing aid more open to using them.

    There may be some drawbacks, though. Fit and comfort during long use might be an issue. And while other hearing aids are built to last through a whole day or more, Stangl said the battery life of the AirPods won’t allow for that. She also noted that wearing earbuds can send a message to others that the person doesn’t want to be disturbed or spoken to.

    “But we’re hoping that more people will try it and realize, ‘Yeah, these do help,’” she said.

    Tips for buying OTC hearing aids

    Stangl suggests people do plenty of research before buying. She said Facebook and Reddit forums can be especially helpful in vetting devices. The websites Hearing Tracker and Soundly also have reliable reviews and resources for selecting a hearing aid, she said.

    The Hearing Loss Association of America and American Academy of Audiology have guides to buying a hearing aid at their websites. If you are stuck, consult an audiologist.

    Look for devices that allow you to adjust different pitches. Most people with hearing loss have the hardest time hearing higher pitches, so find a device that can adjust amplification across frequencies.

    To avoid the piercing whistle of feedback, buy a device that has a “feedback manager.” Fit is critical, but beware: it might not necessarily be the one that’s initially the most comfortable, so take your time.

    Can you use your FSA or HSA money to buy OTC hearing aids — or even AirPods?

    Pre-tax money stashed away in flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts can be used to buy hearing aids, including ones sold over the counter.

    Does this mean you can score a new set of AirPods Pro2 with pre-tax money? Experts say it’s a gray area that hasn’t been tested yet, so be wary. You may even need a letter of medical necessity. It’s best to check with an accountant before you try it.

    Your smartphone can help you even without hearing aids

    Even if you can’t afford the latest and greatest tech, your smartphone can be a tool to protect and improve your hearing.

    Most phones can now turn speech into text, which can help facilitate conversations. iPhone’s “Live Listen” feature turns your phone into an amplifying microphone that can beam your dinner date’s voice right to your ear even if you’re in a noisy restaurant.

    Multi-Link Operation

    Perhaps the most exciting advance in Wi-Fi 7 is Multi-Link Operation (MLO). Every previous Wi-Fi standard establishes a connection between two devices on a single band. Even a tri-band Wi-Fi 6E router connects two devices on a single band on a fixed channel (the router decides whether to connect on the 2.4-GHz, 5-GHz, or 6-GHz band).

    MLO can combine several frequencies across bands into a single connection. A Wi-Fi 7 router can connect to a Wi-Fi 7 device across two or more channels in different bands simultaneously. MLO potentially enables wider channels capable of transmitting more data—going back to our highway analogy, you can send traffic on the highway and the superhighway at once.

    Speed isn’t always the priority, but MLO also allows for more efficient performance. A Wi-Fi 7 router can take congestion and other interference into account and transmit on the best channel to bypass it, switching to maintain a stable connection and low latency. MLO can also help mitigate the relatively short range of the 6-GHz band, ensuring you get seamless connectivity from your mesh system as you move around the home.

    Higher QAM

    Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) is a method to transmit and receive data in radio-frequency waves. The higher it is, the more information you can pack in. Wi-Fi 7 supports 4K-QAM, while Wi-Fi 6 supported 1,024-QAM, and Wi-Fi 5 was limited to 256-QAM.

    The potential benefits are complicated by signal strength, background noise, and interference. Consequently, as QAM goes up, the range drops, and you need a stronger signal. So, the jump to 1,024-QAM in Wi-Fi 6 offered around a 25 percent data rate increase over Wi-Fi 5. The leap to 4K-QAM in Wi-Fi 7 translates to a 20 percent increase in peak performance.

    Wi-Fi 7 also enhances existing technologies like OFDMA, MU-MIMO, and TWT, which we discuss in our Wi-Fi 6E explainer.

    When Should I Upgrade to Wi-Fi 7?

    This is a tricky question. Wi-Fi 7 devices and routers began rolling out in early 2023. While you won’t feel the benefit of a Wi-Fi 7 router until you have Wi-Fi 7 devices, the new Wi-Fi 7 routers are backward compatible. Buying a Wi-Fi 7 system may make sense for people considering an upgrade now, especially folks considering an expensive Wi-Fi 6E system, as they will handle 6E connections but also afford some future-proofing.

    We have tested a number of Wi-Fi 7 routers and mesh systems, including the TP-Link BE800 (8/10, WIRED Review), the Amazon Eero Max 7 (7/10, WIRED Review), the Netgear Orbi 970 Series (7/10, WIRED Review), and the TP-Link Deco BE85 (7/10, WIRED Review). All of these systems are very expensive. Thankfully, some manufacturers have started dropping prices on their flagship Wi-Fi 7 routers and introducing midrange and entry-level options (you can find some in our best router and best mesh guides).

    On the device side, we are seeing more and more smartphones and laptops with Wi-Fi 7 on board. The latest flagship phone ranges from Apple, Google, and Samsung all support Wi-Fi 7. By prevailing standards, it’s a clean, logical, and usable app, which is about as much as anyone is entitled to expect.

    As far as performance is concerned, the headline here is that Bowers & Wilkins has come within an ace of justifying the asking price of the Pi8—and, what’s more, drawbacks (such as they are) to Pi8 ownership are both mild and not centered too heavily on the way they actually sound.

    Keep volume levels anywhere between “realistic” and “perhaps a little too loud,” and there’s a huge amount to enjoy about the way the Pi8 perform. They create an expansive, well-defined, and rigorously organized soundstage, which means that every element of even the most complex recordings have plenty of room in which to spread out and express themselves.

    This spaciousness and separation doesn’t affect the singularity or unity of the way the Pi8 present something like Fela Kuti’s Gentleman. No matter how hectic the going gets, there’s a togetherness to the Pi8 sound, despite their ability to peer so deeply into the mix that any individual instrument is easy to isolate and examine.

    Avoiding Aural Pileups

    The same recording allows the Bowers & Wilkins to demonstrate their facility with dynamics, too. There’s plenty of headroom when the shifts in intensity or simple volume come along, but the earbuds are also able to identify and contextualize the more minor (but no less important) harmonic variations or transient occurrences.

    In fact, detail levels approach sky-high at every turn. No aspect of the recording is too fleeting or too far back in the mix to be overlooked by the Pi8. To these earbuds, there’s no such thing as “negligible.”

    Angry T-Mobile customers have filed a class action lawsuit over the carrier’s decision to raise prices on plans that were advertised as having a lifetime price guarantee.

    “Based upon T-Mobile’s representations that the rates offered with respect to certain plans were guaranteed to last for life or as long as the customer wanted to remain with that plan, each Plaintiff and the Class Members agreed to these plans for wireless cellphone service from T-Mobile,” said the complaint filed in US District Court for the District of New Jersey. “However, in May 2024, T-Mobile unilaterally did away with these legacy phone plans and switched Plaintiffs and the Class to more expensive plans without their consent.”

    The complaint, filed on July 12, has four named plaintiffs who live in New Jersey, Georgia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. They are seeking to represent a class of all US residents “who entered into a T-Mobile One Plan, Simple Choice plan, Magenta, Magenta Max, Magenta 55+, Magenta Amplified or Magenta Military Plan with T-Mobile which included a promised lifetime price guarantee but had their price increased without their consent and in violation of the promises made by T-Mobile and relied upon by Plaintiffs and the proposed class.”

    The complaint seeks “restitution of all amounts obtained by Defendant as a result of its violation,” plus interest. It also seeks statutory and punitive damages, and an injunction to prevent further “wrongful, unlawful, fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair conduct.”

    “T-Mobile Will Never Change the Price You Pay”

    The lawsuit’s allegations will be familiar to those who read our previous articles on the recent price hikes of up to $5 per line. In January 2017, T-Mobile issued a press release announcing the “Un-contract” promise for T-Mobile One plans. “Now, T-Mobile One customers keep their price until THEY decide to change it. T-Mobile will never change the price you pay for your T-Mobile One plan,” the company said at the time.

    The price guarantee was also hyped by then CEO John Legere at a press event in Las Vegas. But separately from the announcement, T-Mobile revealed a significant caveat that essentially nullified the promise. T-Mobile said in a FAQ on its website that the only guarantee was T-Mobile would pay your final month’s bill if the carrier raised the price and you decided to cancel.

    Many customers saw the prominent lifetime price guarantee but not T-Mobile’s contradiction of that promise and signed up for plans thinking their prices would never be raised. The “Un-contract promise” was offered on certain plans between January 5, 2017, and April 27, 2022.

    T-Mobile started offering a different guarantee called Price Lock on April 28, 2022. This was originally more ironclad than the Un-contract, and customers who snagged it were apparently not impacted by this year’s price increases.

    But T-Mobile then created a confusing situation with Price Lock. The stronger version of Price Lock was offered from April 28, 2022, to January 17, 2024. It was replaced by a weaker version that is still called Price Lock but is basically the same as the Un-contract. Customers who signed up for Price Lock on or after January 18, 2024, don’t actually have a price lock—but they can get their final month’s bill covered if T-Mobile raises the price and they decide to cancel.

    After the price hikes, several T-Mobile customers contacted Ars to express their displeasure. One of those customers said that he canceled and tried to get his final month’s bill covered, but T-Mobile refused to provide the refund. The Federal Communications Commission told us it had received about 1,600 consumer complaints about the price hikes as of late June.

    Class Action Plaintiffs

    The lawsuit says the plaintiffs and many other customers were swayed to switch plans based on promises made in the January 2017 announcement and afterward.

    “The experiences of the named Plaintiffs [are] not unique. Numerous wireless customers were motivated to switch to T-Mobile based upon the Press Events and Videos first promoted at the Las Vegas Trade Show,” the lawsuit said. “The extensive advertising by T-Mobile in print and on television also motivated customers to switch to what have now become legacy plans that T-Mobile customers are no longer able to keep.”

    Ham radio enthusiasts are gearing up to gather at the top of Summit Avenue in Rockport on Saturday to connect with fellow radio operators around the globe.

    The June 22 gathering — the 2024 Field Day — will include the participation of operators from the Cape Ann Amateur Radio Association and American Radio Relay League. The event will take place from noon to sundown at the site, also known as Hospital Hill.

    The event will feature a host of operators who will set up and operate different HAM (amateur radio) stations that will test the club’s ability to make contacts with other participating stations around the nation and the world, according to Hamilton resident Brandon Hockle, president of the Cape Ann Amateur Radio Association.

    “This event is a free and family-friendly event open to the community and a great way to introduce kids to the STEM hobby,” he said. “It will be a great opportunity for the public to observe and learn about radio communication and also discover how they themselves can become licensed radio operators.

    “They will learn more about local hams working in their community to provide emergency and community service radio communications,” said Hockle whose call sign is NQ1W.

    Tom Stephenson of the Cape Ann Amateur Radio Association (CAARA) said the Field Day event is observed around the globe.

    “It’s a day when amateur radio operators, HAMS, go into the field and setup their equipment,” he said. “It’s an opportunity for HAMS to practice their radio skills. Working outdoors presents a different set of challenges with the operation and logistics.

    Stephenson, who is in his 70s, said he has been a HAM since he was a child.

    “It’s the love of radio and making contacts all over the world,” he said. “Most HAMS have been fascinated by radio since they were kids. It’s a cool hobby. It’s a lot of fun.”

    Hockle estimated more than 40,000 HAMS in North America will participate during Field Day.

    “It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach and technical skills all in a single event,” he said. “Field Day has been an annual event since 1933 and remains the most popular event in ham radio.”

    The Field Day site for the gathering at the top of Rockport’s Summit Hill, known as Haskins Park or Hospital Hill, was once the location of the former Leander M. Haskins Hospital.

    “This site is frequently picked by CAARA because of its elevation, proximity to the ocean and relative quiet radio background noise, which are all really helpful features aiding long distance radio communication with low power equipment,” Hockle said.

    “We will have three or four small portable radio stations set up and running outside with stations both in the open and under small tents to keep the sun and rain off operators and equipment. Even casual park visitors are encouraged to stop by and ask questions and see folks operating or inquire about how they can get licenses themselves.”

    The Cape Ann Amateur Radio Association is a club established in 1977 which operates from its clubhouse in the Old Riverside Fire Department Building near the Annisquam River in Gloucester. The address is 6 Stanwood St. in Gloucester.

    It’s mission it to aid the community by providing emergency communications expertise, testing for amateur radio licensing and providing social connections between people interested in electronics and radio communication.

    The organization hosts a community open house every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon and holds a members meeting every second Saturday at noon.

    While the Netgear Orbi 970 Series has impressed me over the past month, it is not flawless. I first tried to test this system before it was released and had to give up after encountering frequent network drops. To be fair, I had issues testing many pre-certified Wi-Fi 7 systems, particularly with Google’s Pixel 8 (and I’m not the only one). Netgear has updated the Orbi 970 firmware, so it runs far more smoothly. I had issues with the Xiaomi 14 Ultra this time, but deleting its network settings and reconnecting fixed my problems.

    Premium Price

    There’s a lot to like about the Netgear Orbi 970 Series, but it makes the Eero Max 7 (7/10, WIRED Review) and the TP-Link Deco BE85 (7/10, WIRED review) look relatively affordable, and both of those systems slightly bested it in many of my tests. The scenario where the Orbi comes out on top is for very large homes with multi-gig internet connections. If you have a big house, you can likely afford it, but why pay more? One possible answer is the extras.

    Netgear Armor is a comprehensive security package with many features. It scans devices when they connect to your network, proactively blocks threats, including malware and dodgy websites, and includes Bitdefender Security and VPN service to safeguard your devices outside the home. This package certainly adds value, and some families will find it very useful, though you only get the first year for free. It costs $100 a year after that.

    Basic parental controls are free but limit you to creating profiles for your kids’ devices and pausing their internet. If you want to set limits, track website and app usage, apply age-appropriate filters, set bedtimes, and more, you need Smart Parental Controls at $8 a month or $70 a year after the 30-day trial. These are comprehensive parental controls, but that’s a hefty extra fee.

    While the subscription model is now dominant, Asus still offers much of the same functionality for free with its router range. It’s not quite as user-friendly, but you can tweak more settings. If you prefer the set-and-forget approach, you can save hundreds with the Eero Max 7 at $1,700 for a three-pack or $1,150 for a two-pack (less if you wait for a sale). It is every bit as easy to use, and an Eero Plus subscription at $100 a year includes everything you get with Netgear Armor and Smart Parental Controls, plus genuinely handy extra smart home features and one of our favorite password managers.

    You might pay a premium for some consumer electronic brands because you love the design or for unique features, but that’s harder to justify for something as utilitarian as a router. The Netgear Orbi 970 Series is undoubtedly an excellent mesh, but it doesn’t do much, if anything, that another mesh system cannot do for less. Ultimately, it is overpriced and overkill for most folks.

    Over a year after announcing it would acquire Mint Mobile for up to $1.35 billion, T-Mobile has closed the deal. With the Un-Carrier’s purchase of parent Ka’ena Corporation, it will not only get Mint, but internationally focused prepaid operator Ultra Mobile and wholesale wireless provider Plum. T-Mobile also promised to keep Mint Mobile’s $15 per month/5GB offering that’s among the least costly in the US.

    Mint Mobile is backed by Ryan Reynolds, who is believed to own 20 to 25 percent of the company. The purchase was announced back in March 2023, but the FCC only approved the deal last week. Mint will continue to be operated as a separate brand with Reynolds as pitchman and founders David Glickman and Rizwan Kassim joining T-Mobile to guide the brands.

    Mint Mobile’s $15 plan has a few loopholes, namely you have to pay for three months at the start to get that rate, then pay for an entire year to keep it ($180 in total). As a perk, T-Mobile is offering “unlimited” (40GB with throttling, really) data for the first months. Customers will also get unlimited talk and text in Canada, along with 3GB of roaming data.

    Mint’s rivals include T-Mobile itself, which has a very similar plan but a hard cap at 5GB, along with AT&T, which offers 15GB for $25 including 10GB of hotspot data. A one-year contract and up-front payment is required for the latter.

    What Does 5G Mean?

    5G is a global wireless standard, and it stands for fifth generation. Mobile carriers have been rolling out the fifth generation of cellular networks over the past few years. Compared with the previous generation (4G), 5G opens up unused radio frequencies at the high end of the spectrum. You can read our guide to 5G to learn more, but in simple terms, 5G is faster, has lower latency, and can handle more connected devices.

    What Is 5G Home Internet?

    5G home internet is an alternative to traditional broadband. Instead of running a cable into your home to connect to the internet, you connect to the 5G cellular network wirelessly with a fixed receiver inside or outside your home. You will use a SIM card and have a service contract, just like you do for your phone. You’ll still need a modem and router to convert the incoming signal into Wi-Fi and spread it around your home.

    What About 4G Home Internet?

    Some carriers already offer 4G LTE home internet, and some offer a mix of 4G and 5G. Both work the same way and require a receiver, but 5G allows faster speeds and lower latency. Theoretical speeds go beyond 10 Gbps with 1 millisecond of latency, but real-world performance around 1 Gbps is more common. A gigabit is enough for 5G to compete with broadband. 4G LTE typically maxes out at 100 Mbps but is often slower in the real world.

    Is 5G Home Internet Better Than Broadband?

    The short answer is no. The longer answer is that it depends. If you have fiber optic cable to your house, you can enjoy super fast wired internet, but if you rely on copper cable, your internet speed will be limited. The proximity of an exchange and internet demand in your area will also impact the speeds you get. Some folks lack a cable connection, but remote areas typically don’t have great 5G coverage. If you have solid 5G coverage in your area but internet service is poor or expensive, 5G home internet might be a better choice.

    What Are the Advantages of 5G Home Internet?

    5G home internet has a few advantages over wired broadband, but there are three big ones:

    • Since there is no need for a physical cable, installation of 5G home internet tends to be much easier, and you can likely set it up yourself without an engineer visit.
    • If you have good 5G coverage in your area, you can likely enjoy fast speeds, certainly much faster than old copper cables can provide.
    • 5G home internet service might be cheaper than wired internet. Some carriers offer discounts and incentives to add 5G home internet service to your existing mobile plan.

    What Are the Disadvantages?

    There are pros and cons to everything. Here are some of the possible cons of 5G home internet:

    • Coverage is limited and is likely to be best in cities. If you don’t have good 5G coverage in your area, 5G home internet is not for you.
    • You will need a receiver with a good line of sight to a 5G cell site or tower for the best results. This may mean attaching an antenna to the outside of your home because 5G signals are not very good at penetrating through walls and can be prone to interference.
    • As 5G adoption grows and networks expand, you may find your 5G home internet service is impacted. When 5G networks get busier, your home internet may slow down or suffer interruptions.

    Can I Get 5G Home Internet?

    It depends on where you live and what 5G coverage is like in your area. This coverage map from nPerf allows you to select by carrier to see coverage and download speeds. You can also check with your preferred carrier (most have coverage maps on their websites), but most only offer 5G home internet service in specific areas (big cities for now).

You are likely to get the best deals from carriers you take multiple services from, so if you already have cell service, your carrier will likely offer a discount on home internet.     Our Verdict

    These are both nice savings. I got the cable offer, but not the wireless one. I’ll immediately go and use it up with two manual payments to avoid forgetting about them later.

    Depending on the exact details of your offer, some people won’t find it very worthwhile when they are giving up earning 5x Ultimate Rewards points on the Chase INK Cash/Plus card.

    WOODSIDE, Calif. (KGO) — San Mateo County officials are meeting with AT&T representatives on Monday to talk about the carrier of last resort’s proposal to end landline service to thousands of California customers.

    The beauty of Woodside is certainly something to talk about, but talking by phone from Woodside is another story.

    Bree-Anna Vail has lived in the town 29 years and she has the relics to prove it.

    “We have wired in a landline here and it’s a candlestick phone, an antique phone and it’s wired so you can dial the rotary,” said Vail.

    Beyond entertainment purposes, the Vail family needs a landline.

    “We do have power when the power is out because we have a generator that powers the whole home,” said Vail.

    But the generator doesn’t power the WiFi router, which the Vails need to use a cellphone inside their home.

    “This is my new generator,” said Vail.

    “We have about an hour and a half of time and then the wifi goes out, we have no television, we have no computer, we have no phones, we have nothing,” she continued.

    Which is why San Mateo County District 3 Supervisor Ray Meuller says county officials are meeting with AT&T to better understand what’s going on.

    The AT&T nationwide outage was caused by a software update gone wrong, not malicious intent, sources tell ABC News.

    According to the California Public Utilities Commission, AT&T has submitted two proposals to remove its obligation to provide voice services in its service territories.

    “It’s about someone who’s sitting there in a natural hazard scenario with a fire bearing down on them or completely cut off in a storm system who may have other ailments not being able to reach out and call 911 because they have no means of communication they’re completely isolated,” said Meuller.

    “So last year, we had an eight day outage, there are seven days we would not have any kind of communication for police, fire or ambulance,” said Vail.

    “We’re getting up in years and we think it’s important for us to be able to call for medical attention and fire department and police and those kinds of things,” said Robert Vail.

    Last month, AT&T’s wireless network went down for customers across the U.S.

    Thomas Steed is the Chairman of the Association of BellTel Retirees.

    “If the entire electrical grid in the United States went dark, your landline phones will still work because our central office generates our own power automatically,” said Steed.

    In an emailed statement, AT&T tells ABC7 News it is not cancelling landline service in California, writing: “No customer will be disconnected, and we’re working with the remaining consumers who use traditional landline service to upgrade to newer technologies.”

    “But that broadband internet goes out in these natural hazard events,” said Meuller.

    Which is why opponents like the Vail family say landlines should be here to stay.

    The San Mateo Board of Supervisors meeting is open to the public at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

    There’s also a California Public Utilities Commission virtual public hearing on March 19.

    Those in the Peninsula are still dealing with problems because of the storms we’ve seen.

    AT&T’s full statement here:

    “We are not cancelling landline service in California, and none of our California customers will lose access to voice service or 911 service. For customers who do not have alternative options available yet, we will continue to provide their existing voice service as long as is needed. No customer will be disconnected, and we’re working with the remaining consumers who use traditional landline service to upgrade to newer technologies.”

    • Our application with the CPUC is just the first step of a multi-year process to phase out copper-based landline phone service as demand for it continues to decline. In California, 99.7 percent of consumers within our service territory have at least three facilities-based alternative options for voice service. We are committed to bringing more modern services to California that the public needs and wants.
