We’re just past winter’s halfway point, and this is when the cold-weather outfit ideas start to run out. And while our focus is starting to shift towards spring fashion, that doesn’t mean we can wear spring clothes yet!

That’s why I’ve found 30 winter outfit ideas to make getting dressed this season a lot easier, and a lot more stylish.

Whether you need an everyday outfit or something dressier for a special occasion, there’s a cute (and cozy!) look for you.

Read on for the ultimate winter dressing guide!

Cute Winter Outfits to Get You Inspired

Find an outfit based on these key winter clothing pieces that you may already own, or may decide you need in your winter wardrobe.

    Long Coat Outfit

A tailored long coat is the key to looking chic all winter long, especially in a versatile color like gray.

Though this type of coat looks stylish with just about any outfit, I love the way it can elevate some dark-wash denim and a t-shirt or simple top.

A long coat, along with some heeled booties and an oversized scarf, is able to totally transform basic pieces that you probably already have in your closet.

    Puffer Coat Outfit

Puffer jackets are one of the very best ways to stay warm in the wintertime, and luckily, they are equally as trendy as they are practical.

There are tons of ways to wear a puffer jacket, but I’d say they look best with pants, leggings, and sweatpants. If you’re wearing a skirt or a dress, go for a more structured coat instead.

For an effortless everyday look, wear your puffer jacket with denim, boots or sneakers, and any top or sweater of your choosing.

By adding accessories like chunky gold jewelry and cool sunglasses, you’ll be able to elevate this ensemble even further.

    Oversized Sweater Outfit

Nothing is quite as cozy—or as warm—as a chunky, oversized sweater.

I especially love the magic 8-ball graphic print on this knit sweater, which gives it an eye-catching element.

Wear your oversized sweater with some loose-fitting denim and Ugg boots for a laid-back winter look (leggings work, as well). A pair of faux fur earmuffs add a cute (and extra warm) touch.

    Winter Athleisure Outfit

On cold days when you don’t feel like putting together an outfit (hey, we’ve all been there, especially when 8 AM classes are involved), opt for athleisure. It’s by far the easiest and comfiest outfit option!

A matching sweat set featuring sweatpants and a hoodie will take all the guesswork out of getting dressed, and the fleece material is a warm choice for winter.

And because the two items are coordinated, it will make you look surprisingly put together.

If you feel like going the extra mile, add in some of your favorite jewelry, like hoop earrings and a chain necklace. Along with some high-top sneakers and a puffer jacket, you’ll be all set.

    Street Style Winter Outfit

For a street-style vibe, you’ll want to grab style some loose-fitting denim, trendy sneakers, and a skinny scarf, along with a shiny puffer jacket.

While they may not be quite as warm as oversized blanket scarves, skinny scarves have come back into style and are a rising trend to put on your radar this season.

Don’t forget to accessorize with some trendy sunnies and stacked rings for the complete look.

    Girly Winter Outfit

If your style is girly, you’re going to adore wearing a mauve eyelash knit sweater dress with white knee-high boots.

The feminine color is a total mood booster and is sure to stand out this winter, especially with its fuzzy texture and turtleneck design.

    Faux Leather Pants Outfit

Next to heavyweight jeans, one of the best bottoms to wear during the wintertime are faux leather pants (or leggings).

The leather-like fabric tends to be thicker, and therefore warmer, than other materials, and they will lend your winter outfits a cool, edgy look.

Faux leather pants can be worn day or night, but personally, they are my go-to option on nights I’m heading out and want to wear a dressier outfit.

You can never go wrong with an all-black monochrome look featuring black faux leather pants, a black bodysuit, and black booties.

Complete your night out ensemble with a long structured coat or oversized blazer and some metallic jewelry.

    Puffer Vest Outfit

Puffer vests are going to be your best friend as we head toward spring.

This transitional outerwear item is very versatile and particularly ideal if you’ll frequently be going from outside to inside throughout the day since it’s less bulky than a full-blown puffer jacket.

While these vests also pair well with athleisure outfits, try styling your puffer vest with some casual cargo pants, sneakers, and a hoodie for a laid-back look.

This easy-going ensemble is excellent for a day spent on campus or running errands.

    Oversized Sweater Outfit

What’s cozier than an oversized sweater?!

Beat the chill in a roomy knit that’s going to make you feel ultra cozy during the wintertime.

When styling oversized sweaters, you can either opt for a slim-fitting bottom, like leggings or a mini skirt, or go for a fully oversized look with some baggy pants. It’s all about playing with proportions here.

For example, this oversized striped sweater looks cool paired with baggy cargo pants, sneakers, and a beanie hat for a street-style look.

    Winter Tights Outfit

Tights are the ultimate way to warm up skirts and dresses for cold weather, and this year, patterned tights are having a major moment.

Try wearing some tights with a pattern (like polka dots or a lacy design) with a faux leather mini skirt, and an oversized sweater.

This neutral-colored notch-neck sweater has a longer length, which makes for a stylish play on proportions in contrast with the skirt’s mini length.

Be sure to wear some knee-high boots and a long coat over top to make this ensemble wintertime-ready.

Pro tip: wear socks over your tights for extra warm feet and so that your feet don’t slide around in your boots!

    Aviator Jacket Outfit

Not only are aviator jackets super stylish, but they are also super warm, thanks to their faux fur linings and faux leather exteriors.

While you can wear these jackets day or night, I especially like these for nights out during the winter since they have a dressy, edgy vibe.

On your next night out, try wearing a faux fur aviator jacket with some black wide-leg jeans and a cute top or blouse. Add in some trendy accessories like oversized earrings, a chunky belt, and a belt in a bright hue for a pop of color.

    Winter Whites

Why not give winter white a try?

Wearing white or cream during the winter feels fresh since it’s an unexpected hue that is usually reserved for the spring and summer.

Since most of us tend to gravitate towards darker tones in the winter, some ivory high-waisted pants will make a major statement when paired with a sweater or turtleneck in the same color.

Break up the monochromatic look with your outerwear: this navy blue plaid shearling bomber jacket will stand out against the winter whites and make a style statement. Its fluffy shearling lining and collar help to tie the outfit together and make for an extra cozy touch.

    Sherpa Jacket Outfit

Sherpa jackets are one of the coziest outerwear options for the wintertime, and they make just about any outfit—including a basic, all-black outfit—look instantly fashionable.

This faux fur sherpa jacket features a trucker jacket-inspired silhouette for a relaxed fit with a shorter length that makes it ideal for pairing with denim.

When styled with black wide-leg or baggy jeans, a black top or sweater, and some chunky black combat boots, you’ll be ready to take on the cold in style.

    Athletic Winter Outfit

Don’t let the cold stop you from taking your Hot Girl Walks or hitting the gym. You can still wear your cute gym sets — just be sure to wear a puffer jacket over top and pair your sneakers with some high socks.

Not only are the high socks trendy right now, but they will also keep your ankles extra warm compared to no-show socks!

(If you find a full-on coat to be a bit too bulky, you can swap it out for a puffer vest instead).

    Trench Coat Outfit

Trench coats are having a major moment right now, especially faux leather trench coats, which are better suited for chillier weather.

And while you may be thinking that these are a dressier item, think again.

Why not wear a faux leather trench coat paired with a laid-back, everyday look? It will make a sweater, wide-leg pants, sneakers, and a baseball cap look ultra-chic.

    Dressy Casual Winter Outfit

If you’re going for a dressy-meets-casual vibe, consider wearing a plaid print mini skirt with tights and a sweater.

This classy combination is a timeless look that can be paired with heels, boots, or loafers, depending on where you’re headed, along with a long coat.

Plaid is always a good choice in the fall and winter seasons, and this particular mini skirt is made from wool-like flannel fabric, making it ideal for chillier weather.

    Faux Leather Bomber Jacket Outfit

One of the coolest outerwear trends this winter is faux leather bomber jackets.

These are a fresh take on classic faux leather moto jackets, and they will give your outfits a vintage vibe.

Why not wear a padded faux leather bomber jacket with some baggy or loose-fitting jeans and sneakers in a bright hue for a pop of color? This laid-back look is a great way to elevate your everyday style.

    Outfits for Winter Events

If you have a specific event you’re heading to this winter, check out these outfit ideas for inspiration.

    For a Winter Night Out

So you have plans to go out with your friends, but you don’t want to freeze. No worries!

I’d suggest either wearing a sweater dress or faux leather pants with a cute long-sleeve top or bodysuit.

Faux leather is the ultimate pick for a night out since it has a dressy-meets-edgy vibe that will make you look instantly cool.

Bring the ensemble together with some black booties and a trendy bomber jacket or aviator jacket.

    For a Winter Party

If you’re heading to a dressier occasion this winter, a faux fur jacket is going to add an instant dose of glamour (and warmth) to your look.

It’s the perfect piece to wear to a party, along with a sparkly mini skirt, blouse, and tights.

Be sure to accessorize with some bold jewelry and a trendy handbag to give the outfit a nighttime feel.

    For the Snow

One of the best parts about winter has to be playing in the snow!

But whether you’re hitting the slopes or just building a snowman in your backyard, you’ll need water-repellent outerwear (including bottoms!) to stay warm and dry.

Go for a pop of color with these pink water-resistant high-rise salopettes, which you can wear over a base layer like leggings or long johns for added warmth. Their pink hue gives them a girly, Barbie-esque look that is so on-trend right now.

For the rest of your snow day outfit, wear a form-fitting turtleneck and a water-repellent puffer jacket, along with snow boots and earmuffs.

    For Brunch

Hit brunch in style with a faux leather mini skirt, tights, knee-high boots, and a chunky turtleneck sweater.

This ribbed sweater with a classic black and white striped pattern makes the faux leather mini feel more casual for the day, plus it will keep you nice and warm.

Brunch outfits should be a combination of dressy-meets-daytime, and this ensemble strikes the perfect balance between the two.

    For a Winter Date

Dressing for a date in the wintertime can be tricky. How are you supposed to look (and feel) hot when you have to get dressed for the cold?!

I have the solution: a knit dress. Opting for a bodycon dress in a knit, sweater-like material is going to help you keep warm, while still looking cute and feminine.

This black knit turtleneck dress has a sexy slit detail and a bodycon fit that will hug your curves while also retaining heat.

Wear it with some black knee-high boots, a long structured coat, and some statement earrings to jazz it up. If it’s very cold outside, you can always add tights, too.

    For School

Keep things casual for school with some loose-fitting cargo pants, sneakers, and an ultra-warm puffer jacket that is ideal for walking across campus in cold temps.

On top, you can wear anything from a long-sleeve top to a hoodie — just opt for one with a bit more coverage (the crop top above may not pass your school’s dress code requirements).

If it’s super chilly outside, don’t forget to accessorize with cold-weather items like a hat, scarf, and gloves.

    For the Office

If you’ve got a job or internship that requires you to work in an office, you’ll want to look polished and professional, no matter the season.

The key to accomplishing this during the winter is layering. Not only will layering help keep you warm, but it will also add interest to your outfits.

For example, layer a wool-blend dad coat over a knit sweater (or sweater vest), layered over a button-down shirt.

Along with some tailored trousers and loafers or elevated sneakers, this layered look takes office styling to the next level.

    For Lounging Around

Everyone needs a cute lounge set in the wintertime. It’s the perfect outfit to wear when you want to feel cozy at home or while running errands.

This set includes a hoodie and relaxed-fitting pants, both in a cable knit fabric that is as cozy as it gets.

If you’re heading out and about, wear it with some platform Ugg boots (or slippers) and a puffer jacket (or vest) for a cute, comfy, coordinated look.

  • I Just Got Back From Tokyo and Saw These 4 Trends Everywhere

I Just Got Back From Tokyo and Saw These 4 Trends Everywhere

Japan is known for many things—spectacular food, beautiful temples, high-speed trains, and a welcoming culture—but fashion certainly tops the list. So when I visited for the first time a few weeks ago, I was eager to drink up all the street style around the major cities. While all of Japan is incredibly chic, Tokyo, specifically, boasts a standout street style (it’s no surprise given it’s the biggest city with influential fashion neighborhoods like Shibuya and Harajuku). It’s also a haven for vintage shopping, with entire streets lined with incredible stores filled with treasures from the past.

That effortlessly cool style mixed with the electric city energy against the backdrop of neon lights was exactly the style inspiration I had been craving. So needless to say I had my fashion-editor cap on while exploring Tokyo, taking note of what all the most stylish Japanese people were wearing. While Tokyo style is quite directional and people have their unique styles, I did notice a few trends many people were incorporating into their wardrobes in interesting ways. From an emerging outerwear silhouette to a statement accessory color, below are the four fashion trends I saw all over the streets of Tokyo.

  • 31 Pretty Date-Night Tops You Can Actually Wear in the Winter

31 Pretty Date-Night Tops You Can Actually Wear in the Winter

Dressing for date night can be quite the conundrum under normal circumstances, but that increases tenfold in the winter. You want to feel polished and elegant while still remaining comfortable (but also effortless)—it’s a tall order. When you factor in frigid temperatures, the outfit puzzle suddenly feels impossible.

Enter the pretty top. It’s a classic for a reason, as it pairs well with everything from maxi skirts to tailored trousers. But not just any top will work when you consider the low temperatures and layers of outerwear. I have a system for gauging if a top will work well for those winter nights out: Either it has sleeves, or it has a material or neckline that looks nice under a jacket. As long as it meets one of those criteria, I can rest assured I’ll be comfortable for wherever the evening takes me. Since we’re still in peak winter and approaching Valentine’s Day, I’m highlighting 31 cute winter tops perfect for date night.

  • 4 Cozy Accessories I’m Wearing on Repeat This Winter

4 Cozy Accessories I’m Wearing on Repeat This Winter

I grew up in Southern California, so dressing for winter doesn’t exactly come naturally to me. As an avid skier, I’ve learned through trial and error which are the essential pieces when temperatures are low, and those pieces are accessories. We all know that accessories make an outfit, but in the winter, that rings especially true. Yes, the coat and layers underneath are important, but adding key accessories to prevent exposed skin will make or break your day.

This winter has been particularly brutal for much of the U.S., so I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s been living in their coziest items. I’ve hyperfixated on four accessories that have become my official winter uniform—I would truly freeze without them. From oversize scarves to shearling-lined shoes, these are the hero pieces that have been keeping me warm all season. Below, I’m highlighting the cozy accessories I can’t do winter without.

  • 7 Outfit Formulas I’ll Never Wear Again (and 7 I’m Wearing on Repeat)

7 Outfit Formulas I’ll Never Wear Again (and 7 I’m Wearing on Repeat)

I’ve worn a lot of outfits in my lifetime and tried on even more. There are a few that I’ve worn some variation of hundreds of times and will probably continue to wear for decades to come. At the same time, there are many that, despite my trying to make them work countless times, just weren’t worth a second go. That, or they were worn for years but simply no longer match my sense of style or the ways that fashion’s evolved. The more outfits you wear, the more you learn about what you like—and in turn don’t like.

Since entering into the new year, I’ve really cracked down on those fashion combinations that just don’t fit in with my style and/or current trends anymore, deciding to finally cut them off instead of holding out hope that they’ll make their way back into my good graces. In total, I’ve narrowed down my eliminations to seven full outfits, from skirt and dress looks to denim ones. Scroll down to see which ones I’m on the outs with and which will remain in my rotation indefinitely.

  • Casual Elegance Is My 2024 Vibe—8 Outfits I Just Screenshotted

Casual Elegance Is My 2024 Vibe—8 Outfits I Just Screenshotted

I’ve noticed a major shift in the overarching fashion realm and maybe you’ve noticed it, too. Style right now is heading in a very elegant direction where we’ve taken a sharp pivot away from experimental Y2K trends and have begun embracing polished, grown-up, and utterly sophisticated looks. You might be thinking that this is simply the next phase of the quiet-luxury movement, and you wouldn’t be wrong about that. But the mood du jour is also one that’s inspired by the opulence of 1960s fashion with elements like A-line skirts, luxe duchess satin, and lots of belted silhouettes.

I could go on and on about it, but for the sake of this story, I’ll cut to the chase: I’m personally stepping into my elegant era in 2024 and have gathered the outfit inspiration I’m looking to emulate in the coming weeks and months. These looks are littering my mood board for their low-key polish that’s both chic and easy to wear without feeling overly costumey. Ahead, I’m sharing eight elegant outfit ideas that are quite effortless to put together.

  • The One Winter Coat Fashion People Regularly Wear to Look Wealthy

The One Winter Coat Fashion People Regularly Wear to Look Wealthy

Although we yearn for spring to come faster (albeit for warmer temperatures or the chance to switch up our wardrobes), the harsh truth is that we’re still in the midst of winter. Sure, we can try to be in denial by putting off pulling our puffer coats, thermal layers, and snow boots out of storage, but eventually, we have to face it. When that moment comes, it can be hard to succumb to the idea that your sartorial choices must be based more on function than fashion. But what if I told you you didn’t have to choose between the two? There’s a way to look chic and avoid being cold: faux-fur coats.

We know what you’re thinking. “Faux fur coats? Groundbreaking.” In all fairness, this type of outerwear has been around for a long time. Yes, we’ve seen this coat trend surge in popularity in the last few weeks for a few reasons, most obviously, the need for warmer outerwear as several cold fronts have swept across the northern hemisphere. But the most significant element at play has been social media, which has proliferated the cultural obsession with looking, well, wealthy. You can’t scroll through TikTok, Instagram, or even our site without seeing mentions of the “quiet luxury,” “mob wife,” or “old money” fashion aesthetics. (They have a grip on the zeitgeist, okay?!) It’s within this context that we’ve seen more of the fashion set reincorporate this coat style back into their winter wardrobes.

While one might think it’s “cliché” to incorporate a coat into your closet again just because it’s cool on social media, there’s something to be said about the continued allure of this style. It’s not just that faux-fur coats feel current—they also have an air of timelessness that no other coat style can compete with. Therefore, there one of the best items one can turn to when they want to look chic during a cold front. But if you find you’re still not sold why you should adopt this coat, you’ll want to keep reading.

Ahead, we’re sharing outfits from stylish people in New York, Copenhagen, and Paris to showcase how to style fuzzy coats. Plus, we’ve rounded up the 22 best faux-fur coats at every price point should you be inspired to partake in the trend for yourself. Trust us when we say this one coat will solve any winter woes almost as well as warmer weather (or money) can.

European Women Are Wearing These 7 Winter Trends, and They're All at Nordstrom

There’s just something about European style that we Americans can’t get enough of. Even when they’re wearing something casual and low-key, the fashion people of Paris, London, Milan, Stockholm, and other cities always seem to dress with a certain polish—and I’ll go to the ends of the internet in search of ways to re-create their looks myself. I recently did just that and figured I’d share my findings with you here.

  • I'm an A-List Celeb Stylist— Here's How to Style a Puffer Jacket Right

I'm an A-List Celeb Stylist— Here's How to Style a Puffer Jacket Right

Puffer jackets and chic styling don’t often go together at first glance. How to style a puffer jacket isn’t top of mind for most people. Instead, winter dressing is usually about making sure that you’re mentally and emotionally ready to step out of the door without regretting not putting on that extra layer of clothing.

As a new-ish New Yorker who has never experienced a true winter in her entire life, I have to admit that I’m in the latter camp. So when it came to finding a winter jacket that both looked and felt good, I knew I had my work cut out for me—until I asked Karla Welch, that is.

Welch, who has years of experience styling top A-List clientele like Hailey Bieber, Tracee Ellis Ross, America Ferrera, Karlie Kloss, and Lorde, among others, partnered with Canada Goose this fall and winter to make puffer jacket outfits feel more like a creative choice rather than a chore.

“We really wanted to show how a warm functional coat can add to a look and become part of the entire fit vs. just something you wear to stay warm and dry,” Welch, who partnered with the legacy outwear brand in styling its fall/winter 2023 drop, explained. “This new collection is super flattering on the wearer and the color offerings are in arrays of muted tones with pastels here and there, that can easily work themselves into any wardrobe and on any type of person.”

She’s not wrong—a quick glance at the in-season offerings drastically shows that this isn’t your father’s bulky all-black winter puffer of the past. Earth tones and soft, muted mattes instantly elevate the collection, with a minimalist take on quilting, logos, and hardware from the Canada Goose design team.

  • It's January, and I'm Officially in an Outfit Rut, But These Looks Will Save Me

It's January, and I'm Officially in an Outfit Rut, But These Looks Will Save Me

I don’t know about you, but I’ve got some serious January fashion blues. After a whirlwind month of holiday parties that required dressing up, the unsettling reality of winter is now setting in. Even though I would love to hibernate inside, wearing my favorite pajamas or sweat sets on repeat daily, my busy new-year schedule has other plans in mind. So in order to get out of my wardrobe rut, I went straight to some of my favorite fashion sources for a little style inspiration. We all need a little pick-me-up every now and again.

Since I like to keep my looks easy and classic the majority of the time, these six winter outfits offer just that. They’re extremely stylish but not terribly stuffy. Think tailored outerwear, cozy knits, and—my personal favorite—wide-leg trouser pants. (Pro tip: Trust this New Yorker; they are great for layering leggings, knee-high socks, or boots under in the winter for extra warmth.) When it comes to footwear, I am keeping things simple. Flat shoes, like vintage sneakers and lots of loafers, will keep me comfy and on the move in style. And since I am certain these outfits will be on regular rotation for me all month, I don’t mind sharing the ideas with you. Go ahead and make these six best looks for January your own.
