Last year, a new horror franchise took flight with Pooh: Blood & Honey. With the iconic bear now in the public domain, the film turned Winnie and Piglet into a pair of grim slasher villains carving up a post-grad Christopher Robin and several university students. It went over about as well as expected, but did well enough financially to kick off both its own sequel and a larger universe—sorry, Poohniverse—for more public domain characters to get a horror treatment.

Blood & Honey 2 already dropped this year, so now we’re getting our first look at the whole “expanded universe” part of the thing. Per Variety, classic characters Pinocchio and Peter Pan are set to headline their own individual films, both of which are currently being sold at Cannes. Pinocchio: Unstrung takes the boy puppet will be welcomed into the Poohniverse “with a bang,” said director Rhys Frake-Waterfield, who also helmed the two Pooh movies. The film’s being pitched as a subversion of Carlo Collodi’s classic 1883 book, and one that’ll rely more on practical gore—one scene, according to Variety, will see the title character wear the skin of one of his victims to “feel like a real boy.”

Meanwhile, Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare puts Martin Portlock (Scream of the Wolf) in the title role, who’s gone and kidnapped Michael (Peter DeSouza-Feighoney), the younger brother of Wendy Darling (Megan Placito). She endeavors to save him with Tinkerbell’s (Kit Green) help, who in this universe is a heroin junkie convinced that it’s actually pixie dust. Once you’re done rolling your eyeballs, the cast is further filled by Charity Kase as Captain Hook, and the likes of Kierston Wareing, Nicholas Woodeson, Olumide Olorunfemi, and Teresa Banham in currently undisclosed roles.

Like the Marvel movies this is trying to emulate, Peter and Pin are getting solo movies to prepare them for a bigger future in the so-called Twisted Childhood Universe. Both characters will converge with Pooh and Piglet in Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble in 2025, which’ll also introduce the likes of Sleeping Beauty and the Mad Hatter. The TCU aims to keep on keeping on after the crossover, because a third Blood & Honey is locked in for 2026, while solo movies for Sleeping Beauty and Snow White are also said to be in the works. Yay?

At time of writing, Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare is set to release later this year after production wraps, while Pinocchio: Unstrung will release in 2025 ahead of Monsters Assemble.

  • Mickey Mouse Will Fight Winnie the Pooh in the Latest Public-Domain Horror Extravaganza

Mickey Mouse Will Fight Winnie the Pooh in the Latest Public-Domain Horror Extravaganza

    [ad_1]

It was inevitable, really: as soon as beloved childhood characters became fair game under public domain, they’d be seized upon by horror filmmakers… and eventually, the biggest headliners would square off. The world may not be ready for Mickey vs. Winnie, but it’s coming, and its creators promise gore galore.

Before you ask, Mickey vs. Winnie is a project separate from Mickey Mouse Trap, which announced its existence during the first week of 2024 not long after Steamboat Willie-era Mickey Mouse emerged from Disney’s copyright clutches. It’s also not part of the Twisted Childhood Universe, aka the Poohniverse, from the makers of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. This new project, which is currently in production in Michigan, is being written and directed by Glenn Douglas Packard.

A press release provides this plot synopsis: “In the 1920s, two convicts escape into a cursed forest only to be dragged and consumed into the depths of the dark forest’s muddy heart. A century later, a group of thrill-seeking friends unknowingly venture into the same woods. Their Airbnb getaway takes a horrifying turn when the convicts mutate into twisted versions of childhood icons Mickey Mouse & Winnie-The-Pooh, and emerge to terrorize them. A night of violence and gore erupts, as the group of friends battle against their now monstrous beloved childhood characters and fight to break free from the forest’s grip. In a horrific spectacle, Mickey and Winnie clash, painting the woods in a gruesome tableau of blood—a chilling testament to the curse’s insidious power.”

The basic plot sounds like another iteration of the ol’ “cabin in the woods” genre, and we’ve already pointed out that Mickey and Winnie are both becoming familiar faces in horror. However, in the press release Packard specifically notes that “the Mickey Mouse featured in our film is unlike any iteration audiences have encountered before. Our portrayal doesn’t involve characters donning basic masks. Instead, we present deeply transformed, live-action horror renditions of these iconic figures, weaving together elements of innocence and malevolence.”

So far there’s no word on when Mickey vs. Winnie might hit screens or where you’ll be able to watch it. What do you think of this latest public-domain horror project?

BURBANK, CA— Threatening legal action against those using its intellectual property without permission, Disney announced Friday that it would begin cracking down on copyright infringement by people who pictured Mickey Mouse while masturbating. “All erotic fantasies featuring Mickey Mouse, whether in his current iteration or as he appears in the classic short Steamboat Willie, must be expressly sanctioned by the Walt Disney Company, otherwise you will face litigation,” said Disney CEO Bob Iger, explaining that pleasuring oneself while envisioning the iconic mouse mascot was reserved for employees of Disney, such as the company’s Imagineers and Iger himself. “If you want to attain climax to the thought of popular cartoon imagery without paying our arousal licensing fee, make it to something in the public domain like Winnie the Pooh or Krazy Kat. You’re free to let loose your most depraved self-cest and insertion fantasies on them. But not with Mickey. He’s ours.” At press time, defense lawyers reportedly responded to Iger’s threats by arguing that laughing while masturbating to the thought of Mickey Mouse was protected under parody law.

Tom Cruise’s latest mission? Making a cameo at King Charles’ coronation concert.

On Friday, BBC announced the latest performers and entertainers slated to make an appearance at the monarch’s May 7 concert, which is set to take place on the grounds of Windsor Castle just a day after Charles and Queen Camilla are crowned at Westminster Abbey.

In addition to the “Top Gun” actor ― who rubbed shoulders with Prince William and Kate Middleton just last year ― BBC announced that the concert will feature Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls, a Dame Joan Collins cameo and some pre-recorded bits from Bear Grylls and Sir Tom Jones.

Winne the Pooh will also stop by the king’s festivities in some capacity. It’s unclear if Paddington Bear, who made an appearance at Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee last year, was booked already.

Previously announced acts for the concert include the English pop group Take That, Andrea Bocelli, Lionel Richie and Katy Perry.

Both Richie and Perry actually share close ties to Charles. Perry is an ambassador for Charles’ charity, The British Asian Trust, while the “All Night Long” singer is a global ambassador for the monarch’s Prince’s Trust charity.

Perry told Extra! earlier this week that she is “grateful” to be performing during the historic weekend. The “California Girls” singer added that she’s also really excited about the high-end accommodations that come with the gig, as she’s been invited to stay at Windsor Castle.

“I might be posting [on social media] a lot because I’m gonna be in a castle, for real,” she admitted. “This is wild.”
