    After eight months of work, Bobby Ehasz finally is ready to welcome the public into Tricky Tortoise Brewing Co. (4057 Erie St., 440-306-8372). He will do that this weekend when the doors officially open for the first time.

    Ehasz, a partner in Pompatus Brewing in Bainbridge, started with a dark, cavernous building that had been vacant since early 2020. The bulk of the work has been devoted to making the space, long home to Willoughby Brewing, feel lighter, brighter and more welcoming. Walls were removed, flooring replaced, booths extracted, lighting updated, and fixtures and furniture upgraded.

    Already, Caleb Brown, a brewer who worked at Platform/AB and Thirsty Dog, has assembled a tasty roster of beers for opening weekend. He’s starting with a couple IPAs, a cream ale, and a helles brewed in collaboration with Akronym Brewing. There’s also a house-brewed lime seltzer. In the pipeline, says Brown, is a brown ale, black lager and West Coast IPA.

    “In my mind, you’re always pushing to educate the consumer towards balance and nuance rather than to how many hops can we throw in this and how many flavors can you throw in that,” Brown says. “I think that’s what we’re seeing in the craft market overall right now. The pendulum is swinging back from the pastry stouts to things with nuance and balance and simplicity.”

    The lunch and dinner menu is simple, but hearty and scratch-made. The beer-friendly lineup includes loaded nachos, jumbo wings, sausage-stuffed peppers and a Bavarian pretzel served with beer cheese. There are salads, pizzas, fried chicken sandwiches, meatball subs, sausage and pepper sandwiches and a burger.

    There will be live entertainment, starting this weekend.

    Earlier this year,  the Vergara family made the decision to streamline the offerings at its Willoughby property. What had been a three-headed concern, with Pulpo Beer Co. and Hola Tacos downstairs and Barroco Arepa Bar on the second level, was consolidated to Pulpo operating on the main level with a new “greatest hits” style menu.

    The rearrangement freed up the second floor for something new: The Kraken Room.

    Owner Juan Vergara says that the success of Amazonia in Lakewood, the restaurant group’s first foray into craft cocktails, has inspired them to double down by adding a new east-side lounge. As with Amazonia, the bar will be under the guidance of beverage director Gabrielle Swafford.

    “As hinted by the name, The Kraken Room will put on display the dark side of our pink octopus mascot at the brewery. Very much like the mythical creature, this venue will be enshrouded in secrecy, dark tones and leathery textures. The bar program will be the creation of our very own Gabrielle Swafford, beverage director at Amazonia, so expect delicious frothy cocktails, a killer wine list and of course our line up of fresh brews.”

    With names like A Watery Grave, Siren’s Song, Harbinger of Doom and, obvs, Release the Kraken, the beverages adhere to a maritime theme. Those custom cocktails are joined by some tiki classics, Prohibition-era blends, mocktails, beer and wine.

    To eat, there will be a menu of salads and small plates.

    The Yard enters season three

    Season three of The Yard (38040 3rd St.) in Willoughby kicks off on Friday, May 10. Launched at the former Lure Bistro site in 2022, the attraction is equal parts outdoor bar, food truck park and family friendly gathering spot. This year, fans of the seasonal event can expect a mix of old and new draws.

    A collaboration with 60 different food trucks means a constantly rotating food scene, with one or two trucks on hand at all times. For the past two years, Geraci’s Pizza was the big draw in food, but following the opening of a full-service Geraci’s restaurant in Willoughby, that partnership has dissolved. Enter “The Shed,” an enclosed space offering beer, cocktails and desserts from Luna Bakery.

    “We feel that The Yard needed a dessert option to complement the over 60 rotating food trucks throughout our season – and what better dessert than warm cookies?” says operating partner Katie Uninski.

    For the “cookies and booze” facet of The Yard, Luna proprietor Bridget Thibeault has crafted a line of premium cookies that will be baked on site and served warm.

    “We’re super excited to ignite our cookie passion and create dynamic recipes that push the creative envelope more than what is offered at Luna,” says Thibeault.

    In addition to flavors like salted chocolate chip, funfetti birthday cake, white chocolate macadamia nut and trash can cookies and cream, The Shed will offer “cookie shots.” Shot glass-shaped cookies are lined with chocolate and filled with milk, chocolate milk or booze.

    “We’re known for giant solo cups with duckies floating on them, doing a shot of alcohol out of a delicious cookie shot glass is perfectly on brand for The Yard,” adds Uninski.

    Also new this year is a weekly flea dubbed the “Willbilly Flea,” which will be held on Sundays beginning at 11 a.m.

    After working together for years at Felice on Larchmere, Paul Neundorfer and José Coronado were searching for their next restaurant opportunity. They stumbled upon it by accident.

    “We looked at a church in Willoughby three separate times but decided that it just wasn’t going to work,” explains Neundorfer. “We went to go get a cup of coffee and we drove past this building.”

    Despite there being no for sale sign out front, they found an old link for the property on the real estate website LoopNet. They returned to look at it the next morning and, in 2022, purchased the building.

    It took two years, a visionary team of people, and very deep pockets to restore this former country estate to its present form. The 17,000-square-foot mansion was built between the years of 1898 and 1902 for Julia French Boyce. Architect Charles Schweinfurth, who designed many of the houses that comprised Cleveland’s “Millionaire’s Row,” constructed the Neo-Gothic building with sandstone cut from Amherst quarries.

    Over the years, the estate was home to the Andrews School for Girls, an assisted living facility, and other uses before sitting vacant for years. It had been slated for demolition in decades past.

    Today, the main house and nearby carriage house are just about ready for their next chapter. Now called Willoughby House, the property consists of a 10-room inn and full-service bar and restaurant called Julia’s 1902 (37819 Euclid Ave., 216-440-0955). Owners Paul and Michael Neundorfer worked with architects, designers and construction firms to bring the 125-year-old structure back to its former majesty. Visitors will observe original oak wood flooring, coffered ceilings, pocket doors, leaded-glass windows, stained-glass door panels and richly tiled fireplace surrounds.

    “It had a long way to go to get to this point,” Paul says matter-of-factly.

    The upscale casual restaurant will seat approximately 140 guests in separate and unique rooms, including a finished back porch. In spring, a multilevel terrace will add another dimension to the property.

    The rooms were “intentionally refurnished” with period-appropriate pieces, including some original furnishings donated by family members. Designer Troy Valentik blends antique fixtures with modern finishes to create a classic, elegant and rich interior. Gems like a turn-of-the-century Tiffany chandelier – picked up at a Paris flea market – hangs in a restroom. Those who have been to the Hermit Club in Cleveland will likely spot familiar-looking figurines – called grotesques – hanging above the bar.

    Coronado, who was chef at Felice for nearly seven years, will import his characteristic flair for fusing Latin American, Asian and American flavors into approachable, appealing dishes.

    “But this time I’m going to go more upscale,” he says.

    He’ll do that by upping the ingredients, preparations and presentations. To start, there will be harissa-roasted carrots, tempura-fried cauliflower, hamachi aguachile, and short rib croquettes. Coronado is particularly fond of the duck confit mole, whole butterflied bronzini, and a big bowl of pozole capped with seared halibut. There is also a smoked flatiron steak with chimichurri, rigatoni with vodka marinara, and a pork belly-topped burger. A bar menu will be available both before and after dinner service.

    One thing diners will not find at Julia’s 1902 is a gratuity line on checks. Instead, there will be a fixed service charge somewhere in the range of 18 to 20 percent.

    “We will be running this as a no-tipping establishment,” says Michael. “Our servers are interested in earning a living wage. They earn a salary with time off and paid health care. We think the training and level of hospitality and the lack of turnover this creates is going to offset some of the fixed costs.”

    Tips will not be accepted by any employee, from valet parker to bartender, they stress.

    Julia’s 1902 will be open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday.

    1 dead and another injured after dump truck crashes into house, both catch on fire in Willoughby

    WILLOUGHBY, Ohio — Saturday morning, a Ward’s Lawn Care dump truck crashed into a Willoughby home, according to the Willoughby Fire Department.

    Witness video showed a chaotic scene unfolding a little before 11:00 a.m. Erika Sherman watched it all unfold. She said it seemed like the driver of the dump truck lost control of the truck.

    “There was a gentleman who was driving. He ended up going over a curb, and off the side of the road, back onto the road and back on the side of the road,” she described.

    She said the only thing that stopped the truck, was when it hit a home on Vine Street.

    Willoughby Fire Chief Todd Ungar said the truck hit utility poles, both electric and gas.

    The crash caused both the house and dump truck to catch on fire.

    Witnesses rushed to the truck to try and get the driver from the vehicle, not realizing there was a passenger in the vehicle too.

    “I was able to capture the good samaritans trying to pull the young man out of the vehicle. I believe one of them burnt themselves trying to flee the man,” said James Guller, a witness.

    Sherman was one of the people who rushed over.

    “myself and other individuals got out of vehicles and ran up,” she said. “The gentleman that ran up to the scene took a brick and smashed the window because we were unable to pry the driver door open,” she said.

    No one was home at the time of the crash. Bystanders assisted the driver from the truck, and he was taken to Hillcrest Hospital, said officials.

    But after firefighters got the flames under control, they found someone in the passenger seat, who did not make it.

    The incident is under investigation
