NAACP Image Awards 2023: How to watch and why the show still matters | CNN

    CNN
     —

The 54th NAACP Image Awards is a week-long celebration of excellence in film, TV, music and literature that will culminate in a televised ceremony Saturday.

And while areas of the entertainment industry have worked to become more inclusive and diverse in recent years, Kyle Bowser, senior vice president of the NAACP’s Hollywood Bureau, told CNN the organization’s annual awards ceremony is still vital.

“We do have an underlying mission, and ours is to broaden the scope, widen the lens, if you will, in the critique and the evaluation of what excellence looks like,” he said.

Multiple honors have already been awarded, including outstanding ensemble cast in a motion picture for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” outstanding host in a talk or news/information program to Jennifer Hudson and outstanding breakthrough creative (television) to Quinta Brunson for her work on “Abbott Elementary.”

That’s not to say the main ceremony Saturday won’t have star power as well.

The presenters list alone is A-list Black Hollywood with talent like Cliff “Method Man” Smith, Taye Diggs, Issa Rae, Janelle Monáe, Jonathan Majors, Kerry Washington, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tracee Ellis Ross and Zendaya.

Not to mention Queen Latifah hosting.

“It’s an honor to host the 54th NAACP Image Awards, especially in the year we are celebrating 50 years of Hip Hop,” she said in a statement. “This is a night to celebrate Black excellence and Black contribution to our industry and beyond. Celebrating one another, lifting each other up and you know we’ll have fun doing it!”

There will also be several high-profile award recipients such as Serena Williams receiving the Jackie Robinson Sports Award and Gabrielle Union-Wade and Dwyane Wade the President’s Award.

The ceremony will air live Saturday at 8:00 p.m ET on BET. It will simulcast across Paramount Global networks, including BET HER, CBS, CMT, Comedy Central, LOGO, MTV, MTV2, Paramount Network, POP TV, Smithsonian, TV Land, and VH1.

Will Smith Had To Drop Out Of Grammys Hip Hop Tribute Due To ‘Bad Boys 4’ Scheduling Conflict

Will Smith was supposed to appear in the star-studded Grammys performance that celebrated the 50th anniversary of hip hop.

The actor, who was one of the biggest rappers in the ’90s a.k.a the Fresh Prince, was forced to step away from the gig last minute due to a scheduling conflict.

“I’ll give the spoiler alert away. Will Smith was apart of the festivities tonight, but they started shooting ‘Bad Boys 4’ this week,” Questlove, who coordinated the tribute, told Variety on Sunday night during a red carpet interview. “There were a lot of preliminary shots that he had to do, so we had to lose Will.”

The award-winning musician and record producer added that attempting to get Smith for the 14-minute-long performance was “a shot in the dark” because he is “always shooting movies.” The actor and his co-star Martin Lawrence just announced the sequel last week.

However, Smith wasn’t the only hip hop artist who was pulled from the choreographed number. In a separate interview, Questlove told the New York Times that Lil Wayne and Future were also set to perform in the tribute but both backed out last minute.

Nonetheless, Questlove still managed to put together an iconic show featuring several A-list artists, including those who paved the way like LL Cool J, Queen Latifah, Big Boi, De La Soul, Salt-N-Pepa, Grandmaster Flash, Grandmaster Melle Mel, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Ice-T, Busta Rhymes, Method Man, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, Rakim, Scarface and Too Short.

“I explained to them all that I understand the historical significance of it,” Questlove shared with the newspaper. “But you’ve got to understand that there is a new generation that has a seat at the table. Our job is to make it right.”

“I know this reeks of a lot of overcompensatory acts, but just trust me, the old guard is gone and the new guard is the establishing guard,” he continued. “What should’ve been due to you 35 or 40 years ago is coming to light now.”

  • Will Smith and Martin Lawrence will be collaborating again on Bad Boys sequel

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence will be collaborating again on Bad Boys sequel

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence will be teaming up once again for the Bad Boys sequel. This will be the fourth film in the franchise and one of the biggest projects for Will since his last year’s Oscar fiasco.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence come together for Bad Boys sequel

The untitled Bad Boys movie is currently in the pre-production stage, Sony Pictures informed on Tuesday. Will took to his Instagram space and posted a video in which he can be seen driving to Marin Lawrence’s house. The two actors embraced each other at the door, while Will excitedly announces, “It’s about that time!” He also captioned his post with the same line.

Last year, it was reported that the upcoming Bad Boys sequel, which will follow the 2020 movie Bad Boys for Life, was put on hold after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Academy Awards in March, 2022. However, in May, Tom Rothman, who is the chief of Sony Pictures denied these reports.

According to Indianexpress, Rothman said, “There weren’t any brakes to pump because the car wasn’t moving.” Adding further, he continued, “That was a very unfortunate thing that happened, and I don’t think it’s really my place to comment, except to say that I’ve known Will Smith for many years, and I know him to be a good person. That was an example of a very good person having a very bad moment, in front of the world. I believe his apology and regret is genuine, and I believe in forgiveness and redemption.”

    Bad Boys sequel: More details

The prequel for the upcoming film, Bad Boys for Life grossed a whopping $426 millions worldwide, making it a success at the box-office. Directors Adil El Arbi and Billal Fallah will be reuniting yet again for the fourth film. The duo received widespread acclaim for the 2022 Disney+ series Ms Marvel. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer will be returning for this project, along with Will Smith, Doug Belgrad, and Chad Oman. Martin Lawrence, James Lassiter, Mike Stenson, Barry Waldman, and Jon Mone will be collaborating as executive producers. If a report by Variety is to be believed, the script for the Bad Boys sequel will be written by Chris Bremner.

  • Will Smith Says An ‘Emancipation’ Co-Star Spat On Him While Filming: ‘I Was Like Whoa’

Will Smith Says An ‘Emancipation’ Co-Star Spat On Him While Filming: ‘I Was Like Whoa’

Will Smith revealed he was surprised after getting “spit on” by a co-star while filming his latest movie, “Emancipation.”

During a conversation on Facebook Watch’s “Red Table Talk” this week with his three kids Willow, 22, Jaden, 24, and Trey Smith, 30, the star recalled the uncomfortable “ad-libbed” moment while filming with one of the co-stars that left him speechless.

“As the years have gone on, I’ve gotten more and more locked into these characters for longer periods of time,” the 54-year-old explained, discussing the intensity of his role in the period film. “And it’s just the weight of this story, the weight of these experiences — the quality of these actors. It was emotionally, it was physically, it was spiritually taxing.”

Sharing that the actors got so into character that, at one point, an unnamed co-star spits in his face while filming, Smith detailed the jarring moment that happened early on while filming.

“One of the first days on set, there is a scene with one of the actors, and he leans down in my face and says, ‘You a cold one, ain’t you?’ and then he ad-libbed…”

After reenacting the off-script spitting, the Oscar-winner shared his exaggerated reaction at the red table, with his kids erupting into laughter.

Smith added with a chuckle, “I was like, ‘Makeup!’ No, but it was like … I was like, ‘whoa,’ every actor on this set was taking it really, really seriously.”

Directed by filmmaker Antoine Fuqua, Smith stars as Peter, an enslaved man who “risks his life to escape and return to his family” and “embarks on a perilous journey of love and endurance,” the film’s synopsis reads.

“Emancipation” marks Smith’s first film since he slapped Chris Rock across the face at the 2022 Oscars after the comedian made a joke onstage about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Last month, the father-of-three opened up about understanding if filmgoers have second thoughts about watching “Emancipation” considering his behavior at the Oscars.

“I completely understand that if someone is not ready, I would absolutely respect that and allow them their space to not be ready,” Smith told film critic Kevin McCarthy in an interview clip posted on social media.

He added that he hoped the reaction to the slap didn’t affect the film’s chances of success or the award opportunities for the other people who worked on the film.

“My deepest concern is my team — [director Antoine Fuqua] has done what I think is the greatest work of his entire career,” Smith said.

Based on a true story, “Emancipation” is now streaming on Apple TV+.

How to Navigate The Heartthrob to Hollywood Transition

“Being in such a specific pigeonhole right now, it’s very strange,” Pattinson told Vanity Fair in 2011, a person couldn’t swing a vampiric baseball bat without hitting a Team Edward shirt. “Having a persona people recognize, it’s the thing that probably gets you paid the most—but it’s also the thing that virtually every actor in the world doesn’t want. ’Cause, like, no one would believe me if I wanted to play something ultra-realistic, like a gangster or something.”

In the decade since Twilight’s final installment, Pattinson worked to prove just the opposite and undo his teen heartthrob status, trading mainstream fare for challenging roles in films from David Cronenberg, Werner Herzog, Claire Denis, and Nolan. And yes, he even got to play that “ultra-realistic” gangster in 2017’s Good Time, a hard-boiled thriller directed by Benny and Josh Safdie. Pattinson’s blockbuster origins and recent indie presence collided for his weirder, more detached take on Bruce Wayne in The Batman earlier this year.

Nearly two decades before Johnson was considered a presidential contender, not to mention one of the biggest stars in the world, it was unclear if he would even be taken seriously as an actor. He was credited only as The Rock, his professional wrestling name, for his first several films, including The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King. At times, Hollywood struggled with which space to slot Johnson into—testing him as a family-friendly lead in The Game Plan and Tooth Fairy and brawny supporting player in comedies like Get Smart and The Other Guys. But it was his casting in the Fast & Furious franchise as Hobbs, a character he’s played in five films and a spin-off, that first truly tapped into Johnson’s built-in action-star charisma.

At the time, Johnson says he reinvisioned his career around fellow heartthrobs turned movie stars like Will Smith and George Clooney. “I said, ‘Those are the guys who are on top. And I don’t know how, but I feel like if we can all go shoulder to shoulder on this, I feel like there’s a pathway to that kind of success, only different and maybe better or bigger,’” he told Vanity Fair. With box office smashes such as Jumanji, San Andreas, and the recently released Black Adam, it appears that Johnson’s vision has been realized to the tune of $430.4 million in box office receipts in recent years.

  • Will Smith’s ‘Emancipation’ role taught him lesson post-slap

Will Smith’s ‘Emancipation’ role taught him lesson post-slap

LOS ANGELES — While filming “Emancipation,” Will Smith routinely drew inspiration from the words “sacred motivation” that were written on the front page of a script. But the Oscar winner heavily leaned on the phrase even more in recent months, as he tried to overcome the backlash to his Oscars slap and banishment from the ceremony.

“It’s like when you can locate and center yourself in your divine purpose, you can withstand anything and everything,” Smith said of the phrase that greeted him when he took on the lead role in Antoine Fuqua’s “Emancipation,” which is currently in theaters and will be available to stream Friday on Apple TV+. “Sacred motivation” became like a theme for him and his castmates, Smith said.

The film, completed months before Smith strode onto the Oscars stage and slapped presenter Chris Rock for a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, was a grueling shoot. Inspired by an iconic 1863 photo of the scarred back of “Whipped Peter,” Smith portrays the character Peter — a man who attempts to escape slavery while he uses his wits to dodge slave hunters and brave alligator-infested Louisiana swamps in his quest for freedom.

The photos of “Whipped Peter” were taken during a Union Army medical examination that first appeared in Harper’s Weekly. An image known as “The Scourged Back” showed countless mutilated whip marks on Peter’s bare back that were delivered by his enslavers. The photo contributed to the growing opposition to slavery.

Smith said his character taught him a lesson in overcoming adversity after he faced condemnation, memes and a 10-year Oscars attendance ban. The “slap” seemingly overshadowed his own biggest career milestone, which came later in the night: winning his first-ever Academy Award, best actor for “King Richard.”

The backlash rocked Smith, but Peter ultimately helped steer him back on track too.

“Peter has absolutely helped me through these last few months, just reestablishing within myself in what my purpose is in this world,” Smith said in a recent interview, one of his first since the Oscars. He has repeatedly apologized for his behavior after accepting his ban.

Normally, “Emancipation” might earn Smith some serious Oscars buzz. He’s still eligible for nominations and awards, but can’t personally accept them. Given backlash to “The Slap,” Smith mainly hopes that audiences will still watch Fuqua’s film.

“This movie was so grueling. Literally across the board, everybody had to devote a hefty amount of suffering to what you see on that screen,” Smith said. “So my greatest wish, and I guess I can talk about my greatest fear, is that my team would be penalized for my actions. I’m out with this film that I love and strictly want my people to get their flowers.”

Fuqua knows Smith made a mistake, but he hopes audiences can move past it. The director believes the story about Peter’s search for freedom, fighting to get back to his family and being a catalyst in highlighting the horrific side of slavery in “Emancipation” is much bigger than “The Slap.”

“Peter’s story is so inspiring, especially as a Black man. We go through a lot of things daily, just being Black,” said Fuqua, known for directing “Training Day,” “Equalizer” films and “The Magnificent Seven.” He said his new film tackles how certain elements of racism in America that still occur today.

“For me, it’s a mistake,” Fuqua said of Smith striking Rock on live television. “Hopefully everybody can get back on track and God bless everyone. But we’re talking about 400 years of brutality.”

Bingwa, who plays Peter’s wife Dodienne, credits Smith’s ability to endure the adversity while pushing forward through it.

“It’s in line with the film. I imagine it’s been a tough period,” said Bingwa, who hopes audiences can learn more about Peter’s determination to return home after making a promise. “I don’t want to speak on Will’s behalf, but he’s been an inspiration to so many for so long. I love seeing him with his head held high. Everyone can learn from his experience. I just love the way you took it on the chin, you’re wearing it and walking forward. We’re all human.”

While promoting the film, Smith held private screenings for several influential figures including Rihanna, Tyler Perry, Dave Chappelle, LeBron James and his Los Angeles Lakers teammates along with students at Morehouse College. He garnered a great amount of support from those individuals, giving him somewhat a sigh of relief.

Each time Smith harkened back to Peter’s story, the more he became empowered to share his character’s journey.

“I feel very comfortable in this current situation with this project, with these people,” he said. “I feel cleansed. I feel purified and transformed in many ways. And as one of the lessons from Peter is, ‘Suffering leads to salvation.’ So I am comfortable taking my medicine.”

Will Smith, opening up about Oscars slap, tells Trevor Noah ‘hurt people hurt people’ | CNN

    CNN
     —

Will Smith opened up to Trevor Noah about the now-famous slap at the Oscars in March during an appearance that aired Monday night on “The Daily Show.”

While promoting his forthcoming film “Emancipation,” Smith called it “a horrific night” and said he “lost it” when he stormed the stage and slapped presenter Chris Rock.

“And I guess what I would say, you just never know what somebody is going through,” Smith said. “I was going through something that night. Not that that justifies my behavior at all.”

Smith said that what was most painful to him was that his actions made it “hard for other people.”

“And it’s like I understood the idea where they say hurt people hurt people,” he said.

“That was a rage that had been bottled for a really long time,” Smith said.

Noah pointed out how Smith had written in his memoir about growing up being afraid of conflict and the talk show host also noted the negative things that have been said about Smith and his family on the internet.

“It was a lot of things,” Smith said in response. “It was the little boy that watched his father beat up his mother, you know. All of that just bubbled up in that moment.”

Smith said who he was in that moment was “not who I want to be.”

In July Smith addressed the slap and issued a public apology on social media.

The Academy has sanctioned Smith by banning him from attending the Oscars for the next 10 years.

Smith walked onto the stage from his front-row seat and took a swing at Rock with an open palm, generating a loud smack. Smith returned to his seat and shouted for Rock to “Keep my wife’s name out of your f–-ing mouth!”

  • Will Smith addresses

    Will Smith addresses

Eight months after the slap heard around the world, actor Will Smith sat down with “The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah on Monday to address his confrontation with Chris Rock on the Oscars stage.

In March, Smith went on the Oscars stage and slapped Rock across the face after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Rock referred to her as “G.I. Jane” in a failed attempt to poke fun at her hair loss, which happened because of the autoimmune disorder alopecia. Smith has since apologized for the incident, but had yet to sit down for a  major TV interview to discuss what happened.

“That was a horrific night, as you can imagine,” Smith told Noah. “There’s many nuances and complexities to it, but at the end of the day, I just – I lost it. I guess what I would say, you just never know what somebody’s going through.”

Smith turned to the audience and used them as an example, saying that people could be sitting next to others who just lost a parent, has a sick child, lost their job or other issues that are taking a toll on their well-being.

“I was going through something that night. And not that that justifies my behavior at all. You’re asking what did I learn and it’s that we just got to be nice to each other, man. It’s hard. And I guess the thing that was most painful for me is that I took my hard and made it hard for other people.”

Noah told Smith that even with the controversy surrounding the slap and the significant criticism that arose from it, to him, the incident seemed to be a response to years of unrelated happenings in the actor’s life. Smith agreed.

“It was a lot of things. It was the little boy that watched his father beat up his mother. It’s all of that just bubbled up in that moment. It’s just – that’s not who I want to be,” Smith said.

Noah responded by saying that “everybody can make a mistake,” and that the reason the slap was so shocking is because it was not who Smith really is at his core. That response prompted Smith to tear up.

“I understand how shocking that was for people, man. … That was a rage that had been bottled for a really long time,” Smith said. “But I understand the pain.”

Smith also spoke with FOX 5 DC’s Kevin McCarthy on Monday about his new movie, “Emancipation,” his first major post-slap movie that’s set to be released this weekend. Even though Smith was banned from the Oscars for a decade and resigned from the Academy for his actions, he could still be nominated and win an Oscar for his role in the film.

He told McCarthy that he would understand if people refrain from watching the movie and aren’t “ready” to embrace him again. His utmost concern, however, is that he doesn’t want his actions to come at the cost of the team who made the film possible.

But ultimately, even with that possibility, Smith told Noah, that the situation has taught him one presiding thing: “I had to forgive myself for being human.”

“There’s no better that hates the fact that I’m human more than me,” he said. “…I’ve always wanted to be Superman. I’ve always wanted to swoop in and save the damsel in distress and I had to humble down and realize that I’m a flawed human and I still have an opportunity to go out in the world and contribute in a way that fills my heart and hopefully helps other people.”

    Will Smith says he

Actor Will Smith says he would understand if audiences are not ready to see him on the big screen so soon after the infamous Oscars slap earlier this year.

On Monday, Smith spoke to FOX 5 DC’s Kevin McCarthy about his new film, “Emancipation,” which is set to be released in theaters on December 2 and starts streaming on Apple TV+ on December 9.

It is his first major project since he slapped Chris Rock on stage during the Academy Awards ceremony in March after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Following the incident, Smith publicly apologized to Rock and was banned from the Oscars for 10 years. While Smith also resigned from the Academy, he is still eligible to be nominated and win.

When asked what he would tell people who aren’t ready to see him on the big screen following the slap, Smith said he would respect that choice but said he hopes his personal actions don’t diminish the hard work of the team behind the film.

“I completely understand that, if someone is not ready I would absolutely respect that and allow them their space to not be ready,” he told McCarthy. “My deepest concern is my team… the people on this team have done some of the best work of their entire careers, and my deepest hope is that my actions don’t penalize my team.”

“I’m hoping that the material, the power of the film, the timeliness of the story, you know, I’m hoping that the good that can be done would open people’s hearts at a minimum to see and recognize and support the incredible artists in and around this film,” Smith added.

“Emancipation” centers around Smith’s character, Peter, an enslaved man who escapes a Louisiana plantation and makes his way north. According to Apple, the film was inspired by1863 photos of a man whose bare back was mutilated from whippings by his enslavers — brutal images that helped coalesce public sentiment in opposition to slavery.

  • Chris Rock’s First Stand-Up Special Since the Slap Will Air Live on Netflix

Chris Rock’s First Stand-Up Special Since the Slap Will Air Live on Netflix

While Chris Rock was on the road for his Ego Death comedy tour, it was assumed that he would address the Will Smith Oscar slap that started his year with a shock. “People expect me to talk about the bullshit,” he said during a show in London, according to Deadline. “I’m not going to talk about it right now. I’ll get to it eventually, on Netflix.”

The time to talk has officially come, and its manifestation will be notable not only for its content, but its format: Netflix announced on Thursday that in early 2023, Rock will become the first comedian to air a live streaming special on the platform. It will be his second stand-up event for the streamer following 2018’s Chris Rock: Tamborine.

“Chris Rock is one of the most iconic and important comedic voices of our generation,” Robbie Praw, Netflix’s vice president of stand-up and comedy formats, said in a statement. “We’re thrilled the entire world will be able to experience a live Chris Rock comedy event and be a part of Netflix history. This will be an unforgettable moment, and we’re so honored that Chris is carrying this torch.”

Rock, who was reportedly offered the hosting slot for next year’s Oscars now occupied by Jimmy Kimmel, has yet to majorly acknowledge the incident or Smith’s YouTube apology video released in July. On the day of Smith’s mea culpa, Rock joked about the slap while performing at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre. “Everybody is trying to be a fucking victim,” Rock said, according to People. “If everybody claims to be a victim, then nobody will hear the real victims. Even me getting smacked by Suge Smith…I went to work the next day, I got kids.” (This appeared to reference currently incarcerated Death Row Records cofounder Suge Knight.) “Anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face,” he continued.

The comedian was back at the mic only 72 hours after the slap. “How was your weekend?” Rock began his set at Boston’s Wilbur theater. “I don’t have a bunch of shit about what happened, so if you came to hear that, I have a whole show I wrote before this weekend. I’m still kind of processing what happened. So at some point, I’ll talk about that shit. And it will be serious and funny.”

Some of the reported jokes from Rock’s new set center on the Johnny Depp–Amber Heard trial, about which he said: “Believe all women…except Amber Heard.” He has also joked about the royal family’s reported treatment of Meghan Markle, with Rock quipping that if she wanted to be embraced by her white in-laws, she should’ve “married into the Kardashians. They love Black people more than Black people.”

Netflix has yet to announce an official date—or title—for Rock’s special.

  • Jada Pinkett Smith has deal for ‘no holds barred’ memoir

Jada Pinkett Smith has deal for ‘no holds barred’ memoir

NEW YORK (AP) — Jada Pinkett Smith has a lifetime of thoughts she’d like to set down.

The actor, singer, entrepreneur and co-host of the Facebook Watch show “Red Table Talk” has a deal for what Dey Street Books is calling an “honest and gripping memoir” that will cover her “complicated marriage to Will Smith,” among other topics. The book is currently untitled and scheduled for next fall.

“Jada Pinkett Smith chronicles lessons learned in the course of a difficult but riveting journey — a rollercoaster ride from the depths of suicidal depression to the heights of personal rediscovery and the celebration of authentic feminine power,” read Thursday’s announcement by Dey Street, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.

According to the announcement, Pinkett Smith will recount her “unconventional upbringing in Baltimore,” her friendship with late rapper Tupac Shakur, her love story with Smith and her experiences with motherhood.

“In crisis at age 40, Jada recounts the excruciating choices she was forced to make to redefine her life in every way,” the publisher said.

Pinkett Smith, 51, is known for such films as “Collateral” and “The Matrix Reloaded,” as well as being vocal about her battles with depression and the hair-loss disorder alopecia areata, the source of Chris Rock’s infamous joke at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony.

When the comedian likened her shaved head to Demi Moore’s look in “G.I. Jane,” Will Smith — who published his own bestselling memoir last year — stunned the world by striding from his front-row seat to the stage and slapping Rock.

Pinkett Smith addressed the slap two months later, on an episode of “Red Table Talk,” saying the incident had prompted thousands to reach out to her with their own experiences with alopecia areata. She also said she hoped “these two intelligent, capable men have an opportunity to heal, talk this out, and reconcile.”

  • Will Smith’s first movie since Oscars slap will be released in December

Will Smith’s first movie since Oscars slap will be released in December

Will Smith’s new film “Emancipation” will be released in December — his first major project since he infamously slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars in March. Smith posted a trailer of the movie on his social media pages and called it the “hardest movie I’ve ever made.”

“Blood, Sweat & Tears… LITERALLY! Shoutout to Apple who doubled (and tripled) down on their commitment to deliver this epic story to the world,” he wrote Monday.

The movie centers around Smith’s character, Peter, an enslaved man who escapes a Louisiana plantation and makes his way north. According to Apple, the film was inspired by the 1863 photos of  “Whipped Peter.” One of the images – known as “The Scourged Back” – shows Peter’s bare back mutilated from whippings by his enslavers and it proved to be instrumental in shifting the public sentiment in opposition to slavery.

“Emancipation” will be out in theaters on December 2 and available for streaming on Apple+ on December 9.

The film premiered in an advanced screening during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 51st Annual Legislative Conference over the weekend. NAACP President, Derrick Johnson was in attendance and praised the movie.

“I had the pleasure of watching the film #Emancipation and can’t begin to tell how powerful this is for OUR community and OUR history. It’s a story of adversity, of resilience, of love, and of triumph,” Johnson tweeted.

The announcement of the movie’s release date comes more than six months Smith slapped Rock on stage during the Academy Awards ceremony. Smith hit Rock after he made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. Rock likened Pinkett Smith to movie character “G.I. Jane” because she is bald due  to a diagnosis of alopecia, which causes hair loss.

Smith apologized to Rock publicly and the Academy announced Smith would be banned for 10 years from any of their events after the incident. While Smith also resigned from the Academy, he is eligible to be nominated and win.
