  • Dodgers historic postseason homers by Shohei Ohtani, Will Smith and Miguel Rojas fetch big bucks at auction

    Talk about easing the blow. The Canadian father-son duo that secured not one, but both home run balls that doomed the Toronto Blue Jays team they rooted for in Game 7 of the World Series turned the evidence into some serious U.S. currency Saturday night.

    Dodgers fans will never forget those baseballs hit by Miguel Rojas in the ninth inning and Will Smith in the 11th flying over the left-field wall and into the first row of seats beyond the Blue Jays’ bullpen.

    John and Matthew Bains — sitting side-by-side — will never forget the balls ending up in their hands. John, 61, caught Rojas’ 387-foot home run in his glove on the fly. Two innings later, Matthew, seated next to his dad, saw Smith’s blast land in the bullpen and bounce directly into his hands.

    Novices they were not. John has been a Blue Jays fan since the team’s inception in 1977 and purposely sits where he does for proximity to home runs. In fact, he caught one during the American League Division Series against the New York Yankees a few weeks earlier.

    Both men brought baseballs into the stadium that they threw back onto the field, giving the Blue Jays faithful the impression the Bains did the honorable thing when, in fact, they did the smart thing for their bank accounts.

    On Saturday night, the balls were sold at auction. Smith’s homer, which provided the Dodgers with the winning run, sold for $168,000 while Rojas’ blast that sent the game into extra innings fetched $156,000.

    A third unforgettable Dodgers home run ball from the 2025 postseason eclipsed the Game 7 balls. The second of Shohei Ohtani’s three home runs against the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series sold for $270,000 in the same SCP Auction.

    It was the longest of his three, landing on the Dodger Stadium right-field roof 469 feet from home plate. And it was a key element in what is considered perhaps the greatest performance in baseball history. Ohtani struck out 10 in six innings on the mound in addition to his offensive exploits, sending the Dodgers to the World Series.

    Carlo Mendoza’s story of how he ended up with Ohtani’s ball is no less head-shaking than that of the Bains boys. The 26-year-old Los Angeles man said he was eating nachos in a food court behind the right-field pavilion and saw Ohtani hit the home run on a television monitor. He heard the ball hit the roof, dashed toward the sound and retrieved the ball from under a bush.

    All three balls were authenticated by SCP Auctions through notarized affidavits and lie detector tests. SCP owner David Kohler said Mendoza was so apprehensive about handing over the ball that he insisted meeting Kohler in the parking lot of the Long Beach Police Dept.

    “We authenticated through polygraph and eyewitnesses due diligence,” Kohler said. “From the time we announced we had these baseballs until now, no one else has come forward and said they have the balls. There’s been no contention.”

  • Yoshinobu Yamamoto etches himself into World Series lore with gutsy performance in Game 7

    (CNN) — Yoshinobu Yamamoto signed a contract ahead of the 2024 season worth $325 million over 12 years.

    He had never thrown a pitch in Major League Baseball. But the Los Angeles Dodgers had enough money to take that kind of risk, making the bet that such an insane amount of money will eventually be worth it.

    From October 31 to the early hours of November 2, Yamamoto didn’t just prove to be worth that incredible contract. He proved to be priceless.

    The Los Angeles Dodgers began play on Friday with their backs against the wall, facing a roaring Rogers Centre crowd as the Toronto Blue Jays were one win away from their first title in 32 years. They had just lost two straight games at home in Chavez Ravine and it seemed like time was about to run out on their dynasty claim.

    He shutdown the Blue Jays again on Friday, going six innings and allowing five hits and just one run while striking out six. It was his second victory of the series.

    But that achievement paled in comparison to what he did in Game 7.

    Pitching on roughly 24 hours of rest, Yamamoto entered the game in the most intense of situations. The Blue Jays had two men on base, needing just one run to win the championship. On his second pitch, he hit Alejandro Kirk and loaded the bases. There was no room for error.

    He forced a ground ball to Miguel Rojas, the man who tied the game with a home run in the top of the ninth, who fired home and got Isiah Kiner-Falefa by an inch. Facing Ernie Clement, who tied the postseason record for most hits in a single playoffs, he forced a popout and ended the threat.

    In the 10th, he put the Blue Jays down in order. In the 11th, he allowed a double to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and a walk to Addison Barger, putting runners on first and third with one out. With one last nasty splitter, he shattered Alejandro Kirk’s bat and forced a game ending double play.

    It was his third win of the World Series. It was baseball heroics. It might change the course of his career – starting pitchers are not meant to pitch on such little rest in such high-leverage situations. But it was the stuff legends are made of and no Dodgers fan will ever forget it.

    “He was the MVP of this series. That was incredible,” catcher Will Smith said. “I talked to him yesterday and was like ‘Hey, if you can give one, we can win.’ He gave us three. That was special. He will have a few months off, I know he’s going to need it. I’m just happy for him.”

    His manager, Dave Roberts, put it more succinctly.

    “Yamamoto’s the GOAT!” he yelled repeatedly on the Fox broadcast, using the abbreviation for Greatest of All Time.

    That might be a stretch to say at this point in the Japanese star’s career, but it’s undisputed that his World Series will go down as one of the greatest in baseball history. Winning three games in a single World Series hasn’t been done since Randy Johnson did it in 2001. And he almost got in a fourth game – he was warming up in the 18th inning of Game 3 when Freddie Freeman went deep to give the Dodgers the win, just two days after he pitched a complete game.

    He’s now in the same conversation as pitchers such as Bob Gibson, Christy Mathewson and Mickey Lolich. It’s telling that only six pitchers have accomplished the feat since World War II.

    The kind of toughness and grit that it takes to do what Yamamoto did on Saturday – and early Sunday – can’t be overstated.

    Starting pitchers are creatures of habit. They start their game and then spend the next four days recovering, resting and following a dedicated routine that gets them ready to pitch on the fifth day. They repeat that cycle through the season, over and over from March until October.

    And when they pitch, it’s a more strategic task than what relievers often go through. Starting pitchers have to face the same batters two or three times, forming a game plan to keep hitters guessing and then executing it. Reliever often come into a game aiming to overpower hitters with their stuff, either velocity or wicked movement, and use full effort on most pitches.

    Starters don’t always make good relievers, but somehow when the games get to be the most important, managers always put their top guys on the mound whether they want to be there or not.

    Yamamoto most certainly wanted the ball.

    “I was not sure if I could pitch tonight until I went to the bullpen, but I’m glad I was able to,” Yamamoto said through an interpreter when asked about his superhuman effort pitching on back-to-back nights.

    He went two-and-two-thirds innings, allowing one hit and striking out one batter. He lowered his ERA for the postseason to a paltry 1.45 and held opposing hitters to a .143 batting average in five starts and one relief appearance.

    For all the ink spilled about his teammate Shohei Ohtani’s two-way prowess and the two incredible games that he had in the NLCS and Game 3 of the World Series, Yamamoto’s performance is arguably more connected to baseball’s glorious past.

    A complete game victory in Game 2, followed by volunteering for relief duty two days later. Then another six-inning performance, followed by two-plus innings of clutch relief pitching less than a day later.

    It’s the kind of stuff October legends are made of.

    Yamamoto, as is his wont, approached that rarefied air with humility.

    “I did everything I was supposed to do, and I’m so happy that I was able to win this with these teammates,” Yamamoto said through his interpreter.

  • Longest World Series game in years ends in the 18th inning on Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman’s walk-off home run

    (CNN) — The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 on Monday in 18 innings, which matched the longest World Series game ever, to take a two games to one lead in the best-of-seven series.

    In a thrilling back-and-forth extra innings battle, the Dodgers needed a history-making night from their two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani, who had three RBIs and three runs scored in an incredible four-hit, two-homer performance that saw the three-time MVP reach base safely an astonishing nine times.

    In the end, it was an 18th-inning, walk-off home run from 2024 World Series MVP Freddie Freeman that delivered the win for the Dodgers.

    Toronto’s 41-year-old starting pitcher Max Scherzer put his name in the MLB history books in the opening inning Monday night, becoming the first pitcher ever to appear in the World Series with four different teams. The three-time Cy Young Award winner was greeted rudely by a Shohei Ohtani lead-off double, but Scherzer managed to escape the inning unscathed.

    Los Angeles right fielder Teoscar Hernández would get the Dodgers on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with a solo home run off Scherzer for a 1-0 lead.

    Ohtani would double the Dodgers’ lead in the third inning, turning on a Scherzer fastball and sending it 389 feet into the Blue Jays’ bullpen.

    Los Angeles was poised to add another run, but a perfect throw from Toronto right fielder Addison Barger cut Freeman down at the plate after a single from Dodgers catcher Will Smith.

    The crucial outfield assist from Barger swung the momentum of the game in Toronto’s favor.

    The Blue Jays got two runners on base with no one out in the fourth inning after Dodgers second baseman Tommy Edman made a fielding error on a possible double play ball off the bat of Toronto’s Bo Bichette. Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk then turned the game on its head with a three-run homer off Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow to put the Jays in front 3-2. Toronto would tack on another run on a Andrés Giménez sacrifice fly.

    The Dodgers bounced back with a two-run fifth inning to tie it up. Ohtani collected his third extra-base hit of the game with a double to plate Kiké Hernández. Freeman then drove in Ohtani with a single down the first base line to knot the game at 4-4.

    Toronto reclaimed the lead 5-4 in the seventh inning on a spectacular play. Bichette laced a double down the first base line that sent Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. racing around the bases, slapping his right hand down on the plate just ahead of a diving tag attempt from Smith.

    Ohtani once again came to the rescue, belting his second home run of the game in the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5. The reigning National League MVP’s fourth extra base hit of the game tied a World Series record set by Frank Isbell of the Chicago White Sox in 1906. Ohtani also established his own MLB record with his third multi-homer game in a single postseason.

    The game would remain tied into the bottom of the ninth inning, when Toronto manager John Schneider made the decision to intentionally walk Ohtani rather than give him a chance to do more damage at the plate. Ohtani was promptly caught stealing when he slid past the base and was tagged out by second baseman Isiah Kiner-Falefa to snuff out the rally.

    As the game progressed to extra innings, the Blue Jays threatened to score in the top of the 10th inning, but a great throw from Teoscar Hernandez in right field and a perfect relay from Edman had Blue Jays baserunner Davis Schneider dead to rights at the plate as the game remained all square.

    With neither team able to score, the contest dragged on into the 18th inning and passed the six-hour mark. It tied the record for longest World Series game ever, matching 2018’s Game 3 between the Boston Red Sox and Dodgers, also at Dodger Stadium.

    The Dodgers got heroic efforts from a couple unlikely relievers – two shutout innings from Edgardo Henriquez and four from Will Klein, who picked up the win in a career-long outing.

    With Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who pitched a complete game for Los Angeles in Game 2, warming up to take the mound if the game went to a 19th inning, Freeman made sure that wasn’t the case with a towering walk-off home run to center field off Toronto reliever Brendon Little.

    After six hours and 39 minutes of nerve-racking agony, more than 50,000 fans in Dodger Stadium erupted into celebration as Freeman rounded the bases to the familiar tune of Randy Newman’s “I Love LA” to put an end to one of the most epic games in MLB history.

    The Dodgers team mobbed Freeman at home plate as the Blue Jays retreated to their clubhouse to lick their wounds with roughly 17 hours until the teams will do it all again in Game 4 Tuesday night.

    Freeman described his emotions rounding the bases to broadcaster FOX after the game.

    “Just pure excitement,” Freeman said. “When you grind and fight, and our bullpen and our pitching staff did what they did, to have that go six hours and 40 minutes or so, that’s as good as it gets.”

    Ohtani, who will have limited time to rest as he is the Los Angeles’ scheduled starting pitcher for Game 4, made another bit of MLB postseason history by becoming the first player to reach base nine times in a playoff game. Prior to Monday, no player had reached base more than six times in a postseason game. After his 4-for-4 start to the game, the three-time MVP was the recipient of four intentional walks and one traditional walk.

    Ohtani was asked after the game how he felt following his historic night.

    “I want to go to sleep as soon as possible so I can get ready (for Game 4),” a grinning Ohtani told FOX through an interpreter.

    Los Angeles will enter Game 4 with a decided advantage – historically when the teams split the first two games of the World Series, the winner of Game 3 has won the championship 67% of the time.

  • Brewers turn potential grand slam by Dodgers slugger Max Muncy into wild double play in NLCS

    MILWAUKEE (AP) — Max Muncy was inches away from hitting a grand slam for the Los Angeles Dodgers to open the scoring in the National League Championship Series.

    Little did he know his 404-foot drive instead would end the top of the fourth inning Monday night in one of the most incredible plays of this or any postseason.

    “It’s definitely the worst fielder’s choice/double play I’ve ever hit in my life,” Muncy said after the Dodgers’ 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1.

    Here’s how Muncy’s potential grand slam turned into an unusual 8-6-2 double play:

    With the bases loaded and one out, Muncy hit a long drive to center field, where Sal Frelick jumped and reached over the wall in an attempt to make the catch.

    The ball popped out of Frelick’s glove and hit the top of the fence before Frelick caught it in the air. Muncy wasn’t ruled out because the ball hit the wall — but the Dodgers’ runners scrambled back to their bases thinking the ball was caught on a fly.

    “I didn’t see it hit the wall,” said Will Smith, who was on second base. “I just thought he kind of brought it back in and caught it.”

    Frelick fired to shortstop Joey Ortiz, who quickly relayed a strike to catcher William Contreras. Aware a force was still in effect, Contreras alertly stretched for the throw with his right foot on home plate, rather than position himself for a tag that would have been necessary if the ball hadn’t hit the wall.

    Contreras caught the ball before Teoscar Hernández slid across the plate, forcing out Hernández after he had hesitated at third base.

    “Teo knows the rule. I think right there he had just a little bit of a brain fart, appreciating that when it does hit the glove, you can tag (up) there,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “But then he tagged, did it correctly, then saw he didn’t catch it, (and) he went back. That was the mistake. But he owned it. And after that, there’s nothing else you can do about it.”

    After the forceout at home plate, Contreras smartly got up and jogged to third to force out Smith, too.

    Smith had gone back to second when he thought Frelick made a clean catch.

    “From home plate, I had a pretty good view of it,” Contreras said through an interpreter. “I could tell pretty much right away it hit off the wall. Right away once it hits off the wall, you know that ball is played live. Tremendous job by the guys there just doing what we needed to do to finish that play off.”

    As all of it was developing, Frelick had his arms out with a quizzical look on his face, wondering what exactly had just happened — not unlike many fans.

    The Dodgers challenged the call, but a replay review confirmed the forceouts at home and third for a most unusual inning-ending 8-6-2 double play.

    Umpires called it correctly in real time all the way through the play.

    “Honestly, I didn’t know they ruled it a no-catch,” Roberts said. “I just wanted clarity on the whole situation. And then kind of making sure that they got a couple of forceouts, which they did. And ultimately, those guys and replay, the guys on the field got it right. They nailed it.”

    At 404 feet, it was the second-longest projected distance on a batted ball resulting in a double play since Statcast tracking began in 2015 — regular-season games included. For Muncy, it goes down as a grounded-into-double play, even though the ball didn’t touch the ground.

    There had not been an 8-6-2 double play in the postseason over the last 35 years, the Elias Sports Bureau said. Those type of official scoring details are not always clear in records going back any further.

    The most recent 8-6-2 double play in the regular season involved a ball hit by Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa to Cincinnati center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. in April 2004 — though that one ended with a tag at the plate.

  • Season Five of Slow Horses Highlights An Unlikely Character

    Slow Horses, Apple TV+’s critically superlative series highlighting the exploits of a group of castoff MI5 agents, returns for a 5th season today. If you’re saying to yourself, “Wait a minute, didn’t they just wrap up Season 4?” Then that’s probably the Netflix conditioning talking. For unlike most streaming series, Slow Horses has hewed to an almost traditional, network TV-style release schedule, with this most recent season dropping less than a year after the conclusion of the last.

    Once this season ends, that will mark five full “series” (to use England-speak) since 2022. Meanwhile, the fifth season of Stranger Things (remember Stranger Things?) is set to drop in November, *nine and a half years* after its debut.

    Slow Horses’ lightning fast production schedule not only satisfies audiences eager for the next installment of Mick Herron’s intelligence rejects (Season Five adapts London Rules) but also makes it much easier to remember past details. The premise is simple: Slough House is a dumping ground for Security Service personnel the powers that be wants shelved, whether because of public mistakes (nominal series lead River Cartwright, played by Jack Lowden) or because they’ve outlived their usefulness (Gary Oldman’s Cold War relic and head of Slough House, Jackson Lamb).

    The fact that none of them will ever return to active duty is one that eventually dawns on all the castoff agents, but is especially galling for Cartwright, since 1) the aforementioned cock-up wasn’t really his fault, and 2) his grandfather David (Jonathan Pryce) is a retired MI5 legend.

    This latest season, however, turns the spotlight away (somewhat) from Cartwright to shine it on a character not very beloved of either the denizens of Slough House or viewers: resident hacker Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung). Ho’s biggest contribution to past escapades has consisted largely of timely phone traces and GPS fixes, always provided with the maximum reluctance possible.

    “When do we start shooting again?”

    Ho’s primary infraction at MI5 was being such an obnoxious asshole that no one wanted him around, and thus has a mostly antagonistic relationship with the rest of Slough House. So when this emotionally stunted dork — whose only prior onscreen relationship turned out to be with a bot (in Season 4) — suddenly lands a gorgeous, intelligent girlfriend, his co-workers are as suspicious as Ho is oblivious.

    It’s not much of a spoiler to say his fellow Slow Horses are correct in their assumptions, or that Tara (Hiba Bennani), if that’s her real name, is more than she seems. Whether she’s connected to shocking crime committed in the first episode, one seemingly directed at London’s mayor (Nick Mohammed), currently in a reelection campaign against a far right activist, is something Cartwright, Lamb, and the rest will have to figure out.

    Unusually (for her) interested in Ho’s comings and goings is Shirley (Aimee-Ffion Edwards), whose own shaky background renders her less than trustworthy in the eyes of her fellow agents. Happily, those same spooks are not without skills. For all the caustic comments Lamb may make about Catherine’s (Saskia Reeves) alcoholism, J.K.’s (Tom Brooke) apparent sociopathy, or River’s unrealized potential, they’re actually pretty good at their jobs.

    But we shouldn’t forget about the “proper” Security Service. Second Desk Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) is back, simultaneously attempting to unravel a white nationalist plot, keep tabs on Lamb, and outmaneuver newly appointed First Desk Claude Whelan (James Callis).     The 2023 Kansas City Royals were embarrassed. A 106-loss season can — and should — do that to a major league team.

    Royals owner John Sherman said something about it. Then he did something about it.

    “It sucked,” Sherman told MLB.com at the end of spring training. “But that’s what motivates you. Sometimes, you need that slap upside the head, right? We don’t know what’s going to happen, but we cannot tolerate something like that again for our fans.”

    So the Royals went big and bold.

    Their aggressiveness stoked a remarkable 30-game about-face (56-106 last season to 86-76 this season), a two-game sweep of the Orioles in the American League wild-card series, and a berth in the ALDS before they fell in four games to the Yankees.

    By beating the Orioles, Kansas City became just the second team to win a postseason series one year after losing at least 100 games. The other was the 2020 Marlins, who snuck into the playoffs in the pandemic-shortened 60-game season.

    Rockies fans should hope owner Dick Monfort was paying attention.

    Monfort’s club, which lost 103 games last season and 101 this season, is making some strides toward a turnaround with some young talent on the roster and in the system. But does the will and the wherewithal exist at 20th and Blake to put the Rockies in position for a playoff swing?

    General manager Bill Schmidt and manager Bud Black, who just agreed to return for the 2025 season, are optimistic about the future but not making any promises.

    “Our talent base is getting better,” Schmidt said at the end of the season. “Our depth is getting better. I’m not going to say we’re going from this year to win 95 next year. Our record this year might be similar (to 2023), but we’re going to be a better club.”

    Asked if Colorado can mimic the Royals and the Tigers (who went from 78-84 to 86-76 and the playoffs), Black answered: “Kansas City? Detroit? Anything is possible. When I got here in ’17 … what happened in ’16? (Colorado was 75-87 under Walt Weiss.) And then we made the playoffs. I’m going to say yes. I’m optimistic.”

    But the Rockies aren’t the Royals and Monfort is not Sherman.

    During the offseason, K.C. committed $109.5 million to free agents, the most money in any offseason in franchise history, including free-agent starting pitcher signees Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha. They also signed their star shortstop, Bobby Witt Jr., to a contract extension that could add up to $377 million over 14 years.

    The Royals’ first big roster move was signing free-agent pitcher Will Smith for the back end of their bullpen. Smith had been on the roster of the last three World Series champions, with the Rangers, Astros and Braves.

    During the season, when they sensed success was on the horizon, they acquired closer Lucas Erceg and outfielder Tommy Pham.

    The Royals, who had not been to the playoffs since winning the World Series in 2015, created an effective roster mix. Their postseason roster featured 12 homegrown players, including draftees and international signees. The other 14 players came from trades and free agency. Of those 14 players, 11 had previous postseason experience.

    The Royals are far from a powerhouse franchise. Last season, they averaged just 16,136 fans per game at Kauffman Stadium, ranking 27th in the majors, ahead of only the Marlins and the A’s. This season, the Royals drew 20,473, ranking 26th.

    According to Spotrac, Kansas City’s total payroll this season was $122.5 million, ranking 20th. Last year, it was $96.1 million (23rd).

    After the 106-loss debacle, GM J.J. Picollo immediately began reshaping the front office. He hired Brian Bridges as the new scouting director, promoted Jim Cuthbert to director of pro personnel and strategy, and beefed up the preseason and development department by hiring six new people.

    And so the seeds of a playoff team were planted.

    The Rockies, meanwhile, have some distinct advantages over the Royals. They drew 31,360 fans per home game this season, ranking 15th. Their payroll was $147.4 million (17th).

    The problem is not the Rockies’ failure to spend money; it’s how they’ve spent it. This season, $28 million (19%) of Colorado’s payroll went to the perennially injured Kris Bryant, who played in just 37 games with 155 plate appearances. For the record, that amounts to about $757,000 per game.

    Monfort courted Bryant, who has played in just 33% of the Rockies’ games since signing a seven-year, $182 million contract before the 2022 season, the biggest free-agent deal in franchise history.

    Giving former closer Daniel Bard a two-year, $19 million deal for the 2023-24 season was also a big misstep. Bard, derailed by injuries, did not pitch a game in ’24.

    Earlier in the night, Will Smith stood in a circle of fire – joined by Fridayy and the gospel choir Sunday Service – to make the live debut of his latest single, “You Can Make It.”

    “I don’t know who needs this right now,” Smith opened his set. “But I am here to tell you, you can make it.”

    Mid-way through, Kirk Franklin joined, and then two rapped together. “Nobody gets an easy ride,” Smith, who is in the midst of his comeback from slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars two years ago, told the room. “There is wisdom in that fire. Dance in your darkest moments.”

    The forthcoming presidential election was a huge topic of conversation throughout the show. After Childish Gambino presented Killer Mike with the album of the year award for “Michael,” the rapper used his acceptance speech to address his Grammys arrest and voting.

    “Technically, I was not supposed to be here. I was put in handcuffs, and I was marched out of this building. But I want to tell you, look at God. ‘Cause I’m back, baby. I’m back and I’m winning,” he said in his speech. Killer Mike was arrested at the Grammys earlier this year over a physical altercation he said was caused by an “over-zealous” security guard; he was not charged over the incident.

    “They going to tell you who we vote for is important,” he continued his speech, “And it is who we vote for on the big stage. It’s important, but it’s more important you know who your city council person is, who your prosecutor is.”

    Megan Thee Stallion opened the show by emerging from an egg – a metaphor for her a new musical rebirth – before diving into with an energetic medley of her new singles “Hiss” and “Boa.”

    “BET, Where my girls at?” she said, shouting out Monét and Jones in the crowd before launching into “Where Them Girls At” – a track that’s been an immediate fan favorite since Friday’s release of her third studio album, “Megan.”

    Taraji P. Henson hosted the show at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Her opening monologue was a performance, Henson rapping “It’s about us,” in a loose parody of Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” which he released in the midst of his reignited feud with Drake.

    “No beef in here tonight,” she joked, “Can we say plant-based?”

    Tyla, the Johannesburg , South African amapiano superstar, won two honors on the show, starting with best international act.

    Later in the night, she’d take home the award for best new artist. “This is crazy,” she said. “I just want to dedicate this one to Africa.”

    Monét, who earlier this year won the Grammy for best new artist, made her BET debut and set a high bar for performances, condensing a full set into a few mins with three costume changes and a pair of songs, “On My Mama” and “Alright.”

    Then Sexyy Red took the stage, performing her smooth bedroom ballad “U My Everything” before moving to another stage and a costume change – tackling “Get It Sexyy” in front of an LED screen depicting the White House and dancers dressed like the Secret Service.

    The show took a tonal shift when VanVan and Heiress Harris, two child rappers, their empowerment anthem “Be You” in a school room set. Harris is the daughter of rapper T.I. and singer Tiny Harris.

    Best female R&B/pop artist went to SZA and best actress to Regina King, both of whom were not in attendance; the BET HER award went to Monét for “On My Mama.” She brought her mother up to accept it.

    Country musician Tanner Adell brought her “Buckle Bunny” and her new song, “Cowboy Break My Heart.” GloRilla emerged from above, descending to join her dancers for “Yeah Glo!” and “Wanna Be” – the latter of which saw a surprise appearance from Megan Thee Stallion. Shaboozey kept the country coming with “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” and was joined by rapper J-Kwon, who appears on the track, creating an unexpected and rewarding collaboration across genres.

    Lauryn Hill closed the night, beginning with “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” going into “Lost Ones,” before introducing her son YG Marley for his reggae tracks “Survival” and “Praise Jah In The Moonlight.” Best of all: Wyclef Jean appeared, and the trio – in front of a full-band – performed Fugees’ “Fu-Gee-La.” Pras, the third member of Fugees, was not present. The rapper, who was accused in multimillion-dollar political conspiracies spanning two presidencies, was convicted in April.

    Last summer was pretty packed with big movies, from the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to Across the Spider-Verse and Barbie. 2024’s summer movie season began this weekend with The Fall Guy and a re-release of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. With two throwback movies coming out in the same weekend—one based on an old ‘80s TV show and the other that first released in ‘99—you’d think we were in for another big summer, but so far, things aren’t hitting quite as hard in terms of box office.

    The Secret to Taika Waititi’s Success

    Individually, those two movies did fairly solid: Fall Guy (headlined by Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt) ended up with $65.4 million worldwide, with $28.5 million of it coming from North America. While it fell just shy of initial projections of $30-40 million domestically, it’s still got pretty good reviews, and word of mouth may help get it across the finish line. In second place came Phantom with $8.1 million for North America and $14.5 million overall. A growing prequel fondness goes a decent way, as does attaching a preview of June’s The Acolyte series for Disney+.

    But in Fall Guy’s case, its opening numbers mark a sharp falloff (heh) from that of 2023 and 2022. In both instances, Marvel kicked things off: Guardians opened last year on May 5 to $118.4 million, and Doctor Strange 2 saw $187.4 millon. Deadpool & Wolverine was once meant to come out this weekend as well alongside Fall Guy, but production was suspended that July due to the strikes, and it had just over a month’s worth of shooting left. So with no Marvel movie taking up a May slot as per usual, this year’s numbers are down by 53% (for 2022) and 66% (2022), making for what Variety called the softest start for summer movies in around 15 years.

    Looking ahead, the rest of May is well-stocked with blockbusters. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes releases next week with strong buzz behind it, followed by The Strangers: Chapter One and If on May 17. Furiosa will close things out on May 24, riding right into Memorial Day weekend. Come June 7, that first weekend’s packed with three big movies: Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return with Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the Shyamalan family trot out The Watchers, and Russell Crowe returns to horror with The Exorcism.

    New anaconda species said to be largest ever found during filming of Will Smith docuseries

    A giant anaconda species thought to be the largest in the world has been captured deep in the Amazon of Ecuador by a team of scientists from The University of Queensland.

    The group of scientists, led by professor Bryan Fry, uncovered the nearly 10 million-year-old species with help from the indigenous Huaorani people while filming “Pole to Pole with Will Smith,” a National Geographic series streaming on Disney+ and hosted by the Oscar winner.

    “The size of these magnificent creatures was incredible,” Fry said in a news release. “One female anaconda we encountered measured an astounding 6.3 meters (20.8 feet) long.”

    The invitation by Huaorani Chief Penti Baihua to enter the Baihuaeri Huaorani Territory in the Ecuadorian Amazon was “one of only a handful granted since the tribe’s first contact in 1958,” Fry told USA TODAY on Thursday.

    “Our team received a rare invitation − to explore the region and collect samples from a population of anacondas,” he said.

    Chief Baihua led Fry’s team on a 10-day search for the anacondas, consider sacred to the tribe.

    The team took canoes down river in the Bameno region where they found “several anacondas lurking in the shallows, lying in wait for prey,” Fry said.

    The group then captured several specimens of the species that they named the northern green anaconda (Eunectes akayima).

    “The key to understanding the discovery is the difference in the geographic range of anaconda species,” Fry told USA TODAY.

    The Amazon has two separate basins. The larger basin in the south (Brazil, Bolivia, Peru and parts of French Guiana) is home to the green anaconda, from which the northern green anaconda comes. The smaller basin in the north (Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad, Venezuela, and parts of French Guiana) is home to the newly discovered northern green anaconda.

    The two species differ genetically by 5.5%, Fry said. “It’s quite significant – to put it in perspective, humans differ from chimpanzees by only about 2%.”

    Rumors of larger snakes

    “There are anecdotal reports from the Huaorani people of other anacondas in the area measuring more than 7.5 meters long (24.6 feet) and weighing around 500 kilograms (1,102 pounds),” Fry said, sharing with USA TODAY that Chief Baihua’s son, Marcelo Tepeña Baihua, has scars from a snake about that size.

    “The scars were clearly from a truly massive snake. They say that one wasn’t even the biggest they’ve ever seen,” Fry said. “So its clear that the snakes in the Huaorani lands are indeed the biggest of all anacondas.”

    Details on the snakes found have been published in scientific paper MDPI Diversity.

    Fry says his team’s work in the Amazon is far from done. Pollutants such as cadmium and lead have woven their way into “the delicate fabric of this ecosystem as consequences of the frequent oil spills plaguing the Yasuni Amazon,” Fry shared.

    Fry’s team hopes to keep an eye on the reproduction of the northern green anaconda to gain greater insight into the health of the ecosystem at large.

    “Our future expeditions will focus on the collection and analysis of soil, water, and biological samples, employing cutting-edge techniques to trace the pathways of these contaminants,” Fry said. “By understanding how these metals affect the endocrine systems of the Amazon’s wildlife, we can begin to unravel the long-term consequences of exposure and devise strategies to mitigate these effects.”

    Though the future of this newly discovered species is insecure, the journey through the jungle was full of “wonder,” even where there were challenges, Fry shared.

    “I like nothing better than being overheated, and under-washed while wading through swamps in search of giant snakes,” said Fry. “This discovery is the highlight of my career.”

    Will Smith will play a veteran-turned-vigilante in the upcoming action thriller “Sugar Bandits.”

    The film, based on the 2010 Chuck Hogan novel “Devils in Exile,” follows a group of Iraq War veterans who team up to take down the drug trade in Boston, Variety reported. Hogan — who also wrote the novel “Prince of Thieves” and its star-studded 2010 film adaptation “The Town” — wrote the screenplay for “Sugar Bandits” as well. The director has not yet been announced.

    “Sugar Bandits” was first announced back in 2013, with Universal developing the feature, but it is now hitting the independent marketplace. The film’s worldwide distribution rights will be introduced to buyers at the European Film Market in Berlin, which began Thursday and runs through Feb. 21. There, the film could fetch somewhere in the $80 million range, according to Deadline.

    Later this year, Smith is also set to return to the “Bad Boys” franchise, a series of buddy-cop action films starring Smith and Martin Lawrence as detectives in the Miami Police Department. The untitled fourth “Bad Boys” flick is currently in post-production, and is scheduled to premiere in June.

    Smith and Lawrence recently attended North Philly-native comedian Kevin Hart’s tour stop in Atlanta, where they were previously spotted filming “Bad Boys 4.”

    Smith is also reportedly going to star in and produce a sequel to his 2007 post-apocalyptic film “I Am Legend” alongside “Creed” actor Michael B. Jordan. Most details have been kept under wraps, but the sequel will apparently follow the original film’s alternate ending in which Smith’s character survives, according to Variety.

    These upcoming projects will mark a return to the big screen for West Philly-native Smith, whose only major feature since the now-infamous Oscars slap was the 2022 Apple TV+ film “Emancipation.” Smith has been delving into other forms of media in the meantime. Last summer, Smith made his first video game appearance as a post-apocalyptic guide in the game “Undawn.” He also launched the hip-hop-focused “Class of 88” podcast in October.

    Dave Chappelle calls it “one of the craziest things I have ever seen.”

    He is talking, of course, about the infamous Will Smith/Chris Rock Oscars confrontation.

    Like many, Chappelle wasn’t sure what he was watching. He thought it was “fake,” and he “waited 30, 40 minutes” before calling Rock to find out what really happened.

    “I called him on FaceTime, and he picked up,” Chappelle shared. “Soon as he picked up, he said, ‘Yous the only n***a I’d answer the phone for.’ Apparently, Obama and Oprah, everybody called this n***a to see if everything’s all right.”

    “And I thought it was fake. I didn’t know,” he continued. “So I asked. I go, ‘Well, you know.’ He said, ‘What?’ I said, ‘Did it hurt?’ He said, ‘Yes, n***a, it hurt.’ And then I knew it was real. And then, and only then, was I offended.”

    Chappelle was offended how “Will just sat down and enjoyed the rest of his evening. It was crazy. What the f**k is this?”

    He related the incident to his own on-stage attack at the Hollywood Bowl that same year, when he was tackled by an audience member who ran onstage during his performance.

    “For a homeless guy, this n***a had incredible seats,” Chappelle quipped. “Jamie Foxx was the first motherf**r that jumped out of the crowd. He was wearing a white cowboy hat like he knew this s**t was going to happen to me.”

    He continued, “Every celebrity just ran out because every celebrity saw themselves in me, and they just started beating the f**k out of that kid. And I know Chris was backstage looking like, ‘Nobody helped me.’”

    Chappelle then described what would have happened had Smith attacked him. “I do now know what Will Smith would not have done, and that is enjoy the rest of his evening.”

    Jada Pinkett Smith isn’t letting the intimacy rumors about Will Smith and Duane Martin slide. She recently revealed she and Will plan to take legal action in response.

    In an interview with gossip vlogger Tasha K, a former friend and business partner of Will alleges he caught Smith and Duane in the middle of a sexual act. Brother Bilaal told Tasha he witnessed the alleged moment after walking into Duane’s dressing room. He went on to graphically describe the act and the alleged size of Will’s genitals.

    Social media has exploded with reactions to Brother’s claims, including conversations about this being a resurfaced rumor from years ago. At this time, no public physical evidence has been released to support Brother Bilaal’s claims.

    Will Smith & Jada React To Brother Bilaal’s Claims, Sources Say Duane Martin Won’t Respond

    However, it seems like Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith won’t be letting those types of talks slide this time around. In fact, a rep for the ‘I Am Legend’ actor slammed the rumors in a statement to TMZ on Tuesday (Nov. 15).

    “This story is completely fabricated, and the claim is unequivocally false,” the rep said.

    As for Duane Martin, TMZ reports that sources close to him say he has no plans to address the sexual allegations. The source reportedly called the allegations “so ridiculous.”

    TMZ was also the first to report, via a source, that Will was considering legal action. But on Wednesday (Nov. 15), Jada Pinkett Smith confirmed that’s the direction she and her husband are heading in.

    Speaking on ‘The Breakfast Club,‘ Jada blatantly said that legal action is in the pipeline. However, she did not specify if Tasha K — who previously lost a defamation case brought by Cardi B — will also be sued.

    Jada also said Brother Bilaal tried to “shake them down” in the past.

    “It’s ridiculous, and it’s nonsense, and this is a person that tried a shakedown, a money shakedown that didn’t work. We’re going to take legal action because it’s one thing to have your opinion about somebody versus just making up salacious, malicious stories. So that’s actionable, so we gon’ roll with that.”

    Jada added that Will previously attempted to backpay Brother for his “idea” that he was involved in Will Smith’s book. Brother allegedly declined Will’s offer, but Jada said that was a situation she had limited knowledge of.

    However, rumors come with the territory of fame, Jada said. Still, the Smiths are “definitely” taking the sexual allegations through legal channels.

    “It’s not true. We gon’ take care of it, and that’s that,” Jada said.

    As for how Will Smith is dealing with the talks, his wife says he knows how to find a joke in every situation, including this one.

    Despite wanting to “spit game,” Will Smith said he was worried about Pepa’s ex-boyfriend. At the time, it hadn’t been that long since Pepa and Treach of Naughty by Nature had broken up. So, Will said he was distracted by how the rapper would take their date.

    “So in my mind, when I was like, I was trying to spit my game, but I ain’t really had nothin’ cause my concern was that I was gon’ get killed, ” Smith said.

    Salt jumped into the conversation, adding that death “was a legit concern.” Her response had her, Will, and Pepa laughing.

    “I thought Will was really cute, and we would hang out a lot on the road. He liked to take care of me and never let me spend a dime. He was that kind of guy, real generous,” she told Global Grind. “I sometimes kick myself when I think about what could have been. He was so nice to me, but I really wasn’t feeling him. I guess I couldn’t appreciate a nice guy like Will Smith. He wasn’t thug enough. I was attracted to thugs and hoodlums. Will was too nice to me.”

    Jada Pinkett Smith’s memoir rollout brought some of their marriage secrets to light and caused a ripple of mixed reactions. The most shocking news happened to be Will and Jada’s seven-year separation leading up to the Chris Rock Oscars slap.

    Amid the media storm, Smith stepped with Jada to a book reading in Baltimore. There, he told the audience that he would always support his “best friend.” Adding that he’s accomplished so many of his dreams “on the foundation of Jada’s sacrifices.”
