    It’s the time of year to celebrate the transition from 2025 to 2026. There will be closures for the D.C. region for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

    It’s the time of year to celebrate the transition from 2025 to 2026.

    With that, there will be closures for the D.C. region for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

    Transit and travel

    Metro announced that Metrorail will operate on a regular weekday schedule and run until 2 a.m. on New Year’s Eve, giving riders two more hours to get home safely. You can ride for free between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m.

    On New Year’s Day, Metrorail will run on a weekend late night schedule from 5 a.m. until midnight, and Metrobus will be on a Sunday schedule.

    Additionally, parking is free at Metro stations from 8 p.m. New Year’s Eve through New Year’s Day.

    The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) will operate on a reduced schedule on New Year’s Eve, but not run on New Year’s Day.

    The Fairfax Connector will run on its regular schedule on New Year’s Eve, but on New Year’s Day, it will run on a Sunday schedule.

    In Arlington, the following ART buses will run on a Sunday schedule: 41, 42, 45, 51, 55 and 87. All the other routes won’t be running.

    All the DMV locations in the District and Virginia will be closed on New Year’s Day, along with the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Motor Vehicle Administration.

    The MARC train in Maryland will run on a reduced schedule on all three lines on New Year’s Eve, but won’t run on New Year’s Day.

    Prince George’s County’s TheBus won’t be offering rides on New Year’s Day.

    Trash pickup

    In D.C., trash collections scheduled for Thursday will move to Friday.

    In Arlington, Virginia, trash collection scheduled for Thursday will be completed Friday, while collections scheduled for Friday will be done Saturday. The same goes for special collections. The Household Hazardous Materials/Electronics Collection Recycling Center and the Earth Products Recycling Yard are both closed Thursday.

    In Alexandria, Virginia, trash collections scheduled for Thursday will move to Friday.

    In Fairfax County, Virginia, trash collection will continue as scheduled. However, the I-66 Transfer Station and the I-95 Landfill Complex recycling and disposal centers will close at 2 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and stay closed on New Year’s Day.

    In Montgomery County, Maryland, trash collections scheduled for Thursday will move to Friday. The Shady Grove Transfer Station and Recycling Center will be closed on New Year’s Day.

    In Prince George’s County, Maryland, trash collections scheduled for Thursday will move to Friday.

    Other local closures

    Also in the D.C. region, post offices, schools, public libraries and most banks will be closed on New Year’s Day.

    Jan. 1 is a government holiday for numerous jurisdictions in the area, such as:

    Christmas Day is a time of year many spend with family and exchange gifts with loved ones.

    If you need to do any shopping for holiday meals or last-minute presents, consider yourself fortunate — there will be stores open to ensure the holiday goes smoothly.

    Here’s what’s open and closed on Christmas Day in the D.C. region.

    Stores and pharmacies

    The Holiday Hours, a website that tracks chain store closures, said these stores will be open on Christmas Day:

    • CVS Pharmacy — Numerous locations will be open during regular hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
    • Giant — Most stores will open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but some are closed.
    • Rite Aid — Numerous locations will be open during regular hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and it depends by the location.
    • Safeway — Some locations will be open with adjusted hours,
    • Walgreens — Numerous locations will be open and have extended hours on Christmas Eve but reduced hours on Christmas Day.

    These stores will be closed on Christmas Day:

    Entertainment

    If you don’t celebrate Christmas, you can go watch a movie or get a bite at a nice restaurant.

    Many movie theaters will be open on Christmas Day, such as AMC and Regal Cinemas locations. You can go see new movies such as “Marty Supreme,” “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants,” “Avatar: Fire and Ash” or “The Housemaid.”

    There are restaurants that will be open as well. Here are some D.C.-area restaurants, according to OpenTable:

    • Ambar — Arlington and D.C.
    • Blue Duck Tavern — D.C.
    • Carmine’s — D.C.
    • Fogo de Chão — North Bethesda, Oxon Hill, Reston, Tysons and D.C.
    • Founding Farmers — Alexandria, Potomac, Reston, Tysons and D.C.
    • La Vie — D.C.
    • Palette 22 — Arlington
    • Minetta Tavern — D.C.

    You won’t be able to buy last-minute gifts at Pentagon City, Tysons Mall or Potomac Mills. But you can buy them at the Mall at Prince George’s, Bethesda Row or The Shops at Wisconsin Place.

    Transit

    Metro has announced it will operate on a weekend late-night schedule on Christmas Day. Parking will be free Christmas Day.

    But the trains that will not operate on Dec. 25 are the VRE and MARC trains.

    For those riding on the I-95 Express Lanes, there won’t be any reversal as lanes will be remaining southbound all day, according to road operator Transurban.

    Local services

    Government offices and courts across the D.C. region are closed for Christmas.

    Roads and parkways

    In Maryland, the Open Parkways will be open to bicyclists and pedestrians but closed to motor vehicles. Here are the following hours for these parkways, according to The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission:

    • Beach Drive between Knowles Avenue and Cedar Lane, and Sligo Creek Parkway between Old Carroll Avenue and Piney Branch Road:
      • Saturdays through Sundays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    • Sligo Creek Parkway between Forest Glen Road and University Boulevard West:
      • Thursday, Dec. 25, at 9 a.m. until Sunday, Dec. 28, at 4 p.m.
      • Thursday, Jan. 1, at 9 a.m. until Sunday, Jan. 4, at 4 p.m.

    In D.C., reversible lane operations will be suspended for the following roads on Christmas Day:

    • Canal Road between Chain Bridge and Foxhall Road NW
    • 16th Street NW between Irving Street and Arkansas Avenue NW

    Additionally, from Wednesday through Friday, reversible lane operations on Rock Creek Parkway will be suspended.

    Trash and recycling pickups

    If you’re thinking about getting rid of your Christmas trees or ripped-up gift wrappings, consider yourself unlucky, because trash collection and pickups will happen the day after Christmas and New Year’s for the D.C. region.

    Check your county’s waste management schedule for additional details.

    Mail and package deliveries

    If you’re anticipating a package to be delivered to your comfy homes on Christmas, you may have to wait until the following day.

    That’s because FedEx and USPS will be closed for deliveries. But FedEx will be available for custom critical services.

    Thanksgiving lands on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2025. Here’s what you need to know about what’s open and closed across the D.C. region.

    Thanksgiving will (probably) gobble up your Thursday — and whether you’re traveling, cooking or trying to pick up a last-minute ingredient, here’s what you need to know about what’s open and closed across the D.C. region.

    Government and schools

    Federal, state and local government offices in D.C., Maryland and Virginia will be closed Thursday in observance of the holiday.

    D.C.-area school systems will also be closed, with most schools reopening by Monday, Dec. 1.

    Mail and shipping

    The U.S. Postal Service will not deliver regular mail on Thanksgiving. Expect only Priority Mail Express deliveries.

    UPS and FedEx will operate limited or no services depending on the category. Check carrier-specific holiday schedules.

    Banks

    Most major banks — including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Truist, PNC and Capital One — will be closed Thursday.

    Grocery stores

    If you need a last-minute pickup, many grocery stores are operating — but with sharply reduced hours.

    Open (hours vary by location):

    • Whole Foods Market: Open with modified hours; many locations closing early.
    • Harris Teeter: Open; many stores closing around mid-afternoon.
    • Food Lion: Open, often 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    • Dollar General: Open with adjusted holiday hours.
    • Family Dollar: Many stores open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    • Safeway: Open with modified hours.

    Closed:

    • Walmart
    • Target
    • Costco
    • Trader Joe’s
    • Aldi
    • Lidl
    • BJ’s Wholesale Club
    • Kroger Pharmacies

    Most closures are part of chain-wide holiday policies for 2025.

    Retail

    Large retailers and department stores across the D.C. region continue the trend of staying closed on Thanksgiving Day. Expect Walmart, Target, Costco, Best Buy and most malls to keep their doors shut until Black Friday.

    Some in-store pharmacies and convenience stores may be open, but with reduced hours. Check your specific location.

    Restaurants

    Restaurant hours vary widely. National chains, such as Golden Corral or IHOP, may keep select locations open, but many independent restaurants close for the holiday.

    Parking services and traffic

    DC

    All parking enforcement will be suspended Thursday and Friday. You don’t need to feed the meter.

    Transit

    Here’s how to get around the region on Thanksgiving:

    Metrorail

    • Operates on a weekend late night schedule.
    • System runs approximately 6 a.m. to midnight.
    • Regular operations resume Friday, Nov. 29.
    • First and last trains vary by station; riders should check WMATA’s trip planner.

    Metrobus

    • Runs a Sunday schedule across the region.
    • Regular operations to resume Friday, Nov. 29.

    Parking at Metro stations

    Metro-owned garages and lots are typically free on Thanksgiving. WMATA has not issued a 2025 exception.

    Maryland

    The MARC train won’t provide service on Thanksgiving. For Black Friday, trains will operate on a Saturday schedule for the Penn Line only. No Brunswick or Camden line service.

    Local bus services will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule for Thursday. However, commuter bus operations will not run Thursday and Friday, except for Route 201, which will operate on a weekend/holiday schedule on both days.

    The Light Rail service will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule Thursday.

    Anne Arundel County

    There will be no service on the Anne Arundel bus lines. For Friday, only the following routes will be in service: 201, 202, 203 and the BWI Express.

    Free parking in downtown Annapolis at metered spaces between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.

    Montgomery County

    Ride On Bus, including Ride On extRa (pink and lime), will operate on a Sunday schedule for Thanksgiving.

    Flash bus service will operate Thursday on weekend and holiday schedule for the Orange Route, as the Blue Route not be in service. Both Blue and Orange routes will operate on a regular weekday service on Friday.

    Fees will not be enforced Thursday for any public parking garages, lots and curbside meters. Payments will resume Friday.

    Prince George’s County

    TheBus will not operate on Thursday. Regular operations will resume Friday, except for Route P78.

    The Call-A-Bus and PGC Link services will not operate Thursday or Friday. Operations start back up Monday, Dec. 1.

    Howard County

    Parking fees will not be enforced Thursday, but will in effect Friday.

    Virginia

    VRE does not have service on Thanksgiving Day.

    City of Alexandria

    DASH buses will run on a weekend schedule Thursday. Lines 102, 103 and 104 will not run. It will operate regular weekday service Friday.

    The King Street Trolley service will run its regular schedule Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

    Arlington

    ART buses 41, 42, 45, 51, 55 and 87 operate on Sunday schedule on Thursday. All other routes are not operating.

    On Friday, ART 41, 42, 45, 51, 55, 77 and 87 will operate on Saturday schedules on Friday. All other routes aren’t operating.

    Fairfax County

    Fairfax Connector will operate on a Sunday service schedule Thursday and a holiday weekday schedule for Friday.

    City of Fairfax’s CUE Bus will not have service Thursday. It will have a modified weekday service Friday.

    Loudoun County

    There won’t be any Loudoun County Transit bus service Thursday.

    For Friday, there will be a significantly reduced schedule. See the Transit and Commuter Services webpage for more information.

    Prince William County

    There won’t be any OmniRide bus service Thursday.

    OmniRide Metro Express, OmniRide Local and OmniRide East-West Express will operate regular service on Friday.

    DC services

    • Trash and recycling collections shift to the following day.
    • Recreation centers, libraries and DMV locations are closed.

    Maryland and Virginia services

    County offices, libraries and courts are closed. Trash collection schedules vary by jurisdiction but generally operate on a holiday slide schedule.

    Libraries and recreation centers

    DC

    D.C. Public Library will open the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday. The Neighborhood Library will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Co-located libraries (Rosedale, Northwest One and Deanwood) will operate from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

    On Thanksgiving Day, all libraries will be closed.

    Recreation centers, community centers and indoor aquatic centers will be closed Thursday and Friday.

    Maryland

    Anne Arundel County

    Libraries will be closing at 5 p.m. on Wednesday and will remain closed Thursday and Friday. Doors will reopen Saturday.

    Montgomery County

    Libraries will be closed Thursday and reopen Friday.

    Park facilities and buildings are closed Thursday (parks and trails are always open daily from sunrise to sunset). Community recreation centers will be closed Thursday and Friday.

    Howard County

    Libraries are closing at 5 p.m. on Wednesday and will be closed Thursday and Friday, reopening Saturday.

    Community and athletic centers are closed Thursday and Friday to the general public.

    Prince George’s County

    Libraries close at 5 p.m. Wednesday and will remain closed Thursday. Branches will reopen Friday. Community centers are closed Thursday.

    Virginia

    City of Alexandria

    Libraries are closed on Thursday and Friday.

    All recreation centers are closed Thursday. On Friday, the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility, Charles Houston Recreation Center, and Patrick Henry Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All other facilities will be closed.

    Arlington

    Libraries are closing early at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, and will remain closed Thursday and Friday. All community centers are closed Thursday and Friday. However, the Long Bridge Aquatics and Fitness Center will be the sole community center open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday.

    Fairfax County

    Recreation centers are open Thursday from 6 a.m. to noon, and will follow normal operating hours Friday.

    Libraries are closed Thursday and Friday.

    Prince William County

    Libraries will be closed Thursday and Friday.

    There will be some closures and adjustments in the D.C. area on Monday, Oct. 13, as the country commemorates Indigenous Peoples Day and Columbus Day.

    There will be some closures and adjustments in the D.C. area on Monday, Oct. 13, as the country commemorates Indigenous Peoples Day and Columbus Day.

    In 1937, Congress and President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated Columbus Day — the second Monday in October — as a national holiday to commemorate Christopher Columbus’ expedition to North America, and how it started European exploration and expansion to the Western Hemisphere. Other jurisdictions use the second Monday of October to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day, which recognizes the contributions and history of Native Americans.

    Being that it’s a federal holiday, federal offices are closed and there are other changes to service around the D.C. region.

    Here’s what’s open and what’s closed on Indigenous Peoples Day and Columbus Day around the D.C. region:

    Transit

    DASH Bus: The City of Alexandria said the DASH buses will run on a weekend schedule. Lines 102, 103, and 104 will not run. 

    Fairfax Connector: The county said the Fairfax Connector will go off a holiday weekday schedule. The following routes will operate on a Saturday schedule: 101, 109, 151, 152, 161, 162, 171, 308, 310, 321, 322, 371, 401, 402, 423, 463, 467, 558, 559, 574, 605, 610, 615, 622, 630, 642, 651, 672, 703, 721, 803, 901, 921, 924, 937, 950, 952, 954, 983, RIBS 1, RIBS 2, RIBS 3, RIBS 4 and RIBS 5. Additionally, the following routes will operate on a weekday schedule: 306, 660, 662. If a route is not listed above, it does not operate Holiday Weekday service, the county said.

    Maryland Commuter Bus: All bus routes are canceled with one exception — Commuter Bus Route 201 is operating on a reduced schedule.

    Metro: Metro trains will run on a weekend service schedule from 5 a.m. to midnight. Metrobuses will be running on a Saturday supplemental schedule. All MetroAccess trips are canceled Monday.

    Montgomery County Ride On: The county said the bus will operate on a weekday schedule. 

    MTA MARC Train: The train will run on the R schedule on all three lines. 

    PRTC OmniRide: There is no service on the OmniRide Express. OmniRide Metro Express and OmniRide Local and East-West Express will have regular service. 

    TheBus: The transit service will run on Monday, except for Route P87. 

    Virginia Railway Express (VRE): The trains don’t run on federal holidays, including Indigenous Peoples Day.

    DC

    • Classes are canceled in public schools on Monday.
    • There will be one library open in each ward from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
    • Trash and recycling won’t be collected. The trash day will slide for the rest of the week, with the last day of collections being Saturday.
    • The Department of Parks and Recreation’s outdoor parks, playgrounds, athletic courts and fields will be open. Department of Parks and Recreation-maintained community centers and offices will be closed.
    • All Department of Motor Vehicles locations will be closed on Saturday and Monday, and all parking enforcement will be suspended on Monday.
    • Emergency shelters are open 24 hours on Monday, and the Downtown Day Services Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Any non-emergency construction work will be suspended until Tuesday.

    Maryland

    Charles County

    Howard County

    • Government offices, courts, the animal shelter and over 50 centers in the county will be closed.
    • Public schools will be open for students.
    • Public libraries will be open.
    • Normal Monday trash, recycling, yard trim and food scrap collection services will still take place and the Alpha Ridge Landfill will be open.
    • The Regional Transportation Agency will be open.

    Montgomery County

    Prince George’s County

    Virginia

    All Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles offices will be closed. Customers are encouraged to use its online services.

    Alexandria

    Arlington County

    Fairfax County

  • Labor Day 2025: What’s open, what’s closed around the DC area – WTOP News

    Here’s what you need to know about schools, transportation, trash collection, libraries and other services in the D.C. area affected by Labor Day weekend and holiday closures.

    Summer is nearly over, folks.

    Even though some area school districts have only been back in session for a week, all public schools in the D.C. area will be closed for Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 1.

    Here’s what else you need to know about schools, transportation, trash collection, libraries and other services in your area that are affected by Labor Day weekend and holiday closures.

    Transportation

    Metro will be operating on its Sunday schedule on Monday, with Metrorail running from 6 a.m. until midnight. Metrobus will also be on a Sunday schedule. MetroAccess subscription trips are canceled, but customers can make individual reservations. Parking at Metro-owned lots and garages will be free.

    On the Green Line, Branch Avenue, Suitland and Naylor Road stations will reopen on Labor Day after a monthlong closure, with free shuttle buses continuing to operate.

    There will be no MARC train service Monday. MTA Commuter Bus #201 will run only trips marked for weekend/holiday schedules. Local Bus, Metro Subway and Light Rail in Maryland will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule.

    There will be no VRE train service Monday.

    Amtrak will be running on Labor Day, but check Amtrak’s schedule and timetable for status updates.

    In the District, the D.C. Streetcar will operate on its normal schedule.

    In Prince George’s County, TheBus, as well as the county’s Call-A-Bus and PGC Link services, including transportation for those undergoing dialysis, will not operate Monday. Regular operations will resume Tuesday.

    The RideOn Bus in Montgomery County will be operating on a Sunday schedule on Monday.

    Fairfax County’s Fairfax Connector will be operating on Sunday service on Monday.

    In Arlington, ART 41, 42, 45, 51, 55 and 87 will operate on Sunday schedules. All other ART routes will not operate.

    D.C.

    D.C. Public Library neighborhood locations and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library will be closed Monday.

    All Department of Motor Vehicles locations will be closed both Saturday and Monday. Customers are encouraged to use online options, or download the agency’s free mobile app.

    The District Department of Transportation will suspend construction and work zones for non-emergency work. Approved construction activities may resume Tuesday.

    All parking enforcement will be suspended Monday, except for Streetcar ticketing and towing. Parking enforcement will resume Tuesday.

    Home trash and recycling pickup regularly scheduled for Monday will occur Tuesday instead. Pickups will “slide” to the next day all week until Saturday, meaning pickups scheduled for Friday will occur Saturday.

    The Fort Totten Transfer Station will be closed to the public Monday, with all services resuming Tuesday for bulk trash and recycling.

    The following Department of Parks and Recreation outdoor pools will be open Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.: Banneker Pool, Francis Pool, Hearst Pool, Upshur Pool, Langdon Pool, Rosedale Pool, Ridge Road Pool and Oxon Run Pool.

    Spray parks will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

    Outdoor parks, playgrounds, athletic courts and fields will be open.

    All low-barrier shelters for individuals experiencing homelessness operate year-round, including 24 hours on Monday. Zoe’s Doors Youth Drop-In Center for residents experiencing homelessness will be open Monday.

    The Downtown Day Services Center (The Center) is providing walk-in services to guests with no appointment required. Center hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    The following D.C. services will be closed Monday: The Department of Human Services Economic Security Administration Service Centers, the D.C. Health & Wellness Center, D.C. Health’s Vital Records Division and the Sasha Bruce Youth Drop-In Center for District residents experiencing homelessness.

    D.C. Health’s Licensing and Renewal Division will be closed Monday, but the online license applications system will be available.

    The Department of Employment Services Navigation Call Center and all American Job Centers will be closed Monday. Residents are encouraged to file their unemployment insurance claims online.

    Maryland

    Prince George’s County

    The Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement and PGC311 will be closed on Monday, resuming regular business hours Tuesday. Residents can still submit service/issue requests online for PGC311.

    Prince George’s County public libraries are closed both Sunday and Monday.

    Curbside bulky trash, recycling and trash collection in county-contracted areas will be collected regularly, beginning Wednesday through Saturday.

    The following services will be closed Monday: Animal Services Facility & Adoption Center, Brown Station Road Public Convenience Center, Brown Station Road Sanitary Landfill, Bulky Trash Collection, Electronics Recycling Acceptance Site and Household Hazardous Waste Acceptance Site, Missouri Avenue Solid Waste Acceptance and Recycling Drop-off Center, Prince George’s County Materials Recycling Facility and the Organics Composting Facility.

    Montgomery County

    All Montgomery County Public Library locations will be closed on Sunday and Monday.

    Trash will not be collected Monday, and trash collection will “slide” by one day throughout the week.

    Parking in county-owned lots, garages and on-street spaces will be free.

    County outdoor pools will be open Monday, but recreation, senior and indoor aquatic centers will be closed.

    Other services closed Monday include: Department of Permitting Services, Shady Grove Transfer Station and Recycling Center and MC311.

    Frederick County

    All Frederick County Public Libraries are closed Sunday and Monday.

    All solid waste and recycling facilities are closed Monday, including Reichs Ford Road Facility, Yard Waste Drop Off, and Recycling Center. Recycling services will get shifted one day.

    The Animal Control administrative office and kennels will be closed for adoptions Monday, though officers will remain on duty for emergencies.

    The transit office will be closed, and all transit services will be canceled for the holiday, including MDOT MTA Commuter Buses 204, 505 and 515.

    Other offices closed Monday include: Board of Elections, Department of Social Services, Health Department, Frederick County Courts and the State’s Attorney’s Office.

    Virginia

    Arlington County

    Arlington Public Libraries are closed Monday.

    While permit parking is still in effect as noted by signage, meters are not enforced on holidays.

    Recycling, trash, organics and special collections will operate under a normal schedule.

    Permit Arlington Center is closed Monday, but will be available online.

    The Arlington Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court and Sheriff’s Office will be closed.

    All community centers, as well as Parks and Recreation facilities and programs, will be closed Monday, except for Long Bridge Aquatics and Fitness Center, which is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    Fairfax County

    Fairfax County Public Libraries will be closed Monday.

    The McLean Community Center and the Old Firehouse Center will be closed Monday.

    Fairfax County collection customers will have regular collection services Monday. Private collection customers should check with their hauler for any changes.

    The Recycling and Disposal Centers at the I-66 Transfer Station and the I-95 Landfill Complex will be open on Labor Day.

    Prince William County

    All Prince William Public Libraries are closed Saturday through Monday.

    Labor Day is not listed as a no-pickup holiday; the landfill and compost facility will be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    All parks and trails will be open.

    Birchdale Pool is open for its last day of the season, and Veterans Park Pool will be open Monday from noon to 6 p.m. SplashDown Waterpark will also be open noon to 6 p.m.

    Community centers including Veterans Memorial Park, Ben Lomond, Chinn Aquatics and Fitness Center, and Dale City Recreation Center will all be closed.

    Loudoun County

    All Loudoun County Public Library branches will be closed Monday.

    As curbside waste pickup is handled by private providers, residents should check with their hauler.

    Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, and the Loudoun County Landfill will be closed.

    Claude Moore Recreation and Community Center and the Dulles South Recreation and Community Center will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

    Loudoun County Transit bus services, including Commuter, Local, Paratransit and the Courthouse Shuttle, will not run Monday.

    Here’s what you need to know about D.C.-area government schedule modifications and closures this Juneteenth.

    On June 19, 1865, a Union general informed enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, that the Civil War had ended — two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which outlawed slavery.

    June 19 — or Juneteenth — was recognized by Congress as the 12th federal holiday in 2021. Most local governments across D.C., Maryland and Virginia observe Juneteenth, which will be celebrated this Wednesday.

    Here’s what you need to know about D.C.-area government schedule modifications and closures this Juneteenth.

    Major transit services

    Metrorail will be on a Saturday holiday schedule, with service from 5 a.m. to midnight. Green and Yellow Line trains will run every 10 minutes. Red Line trains will run every six minutes until 9:30 p.m., when they will run every 10 minutes. Orange, Silver and Blue Line trains will run every 12 minutes until 9:30 p.m., when they will run every 15 minutes.

    Metrobuses will run on a Saturday Supplemental schedule. Some bus routes do not operate under this schedule.

    MARC trains will operate on an “R” schedule across all three lines, as well as Penn Line Trains 455 and 454. Eastern Panhandle Transit Authority connecting bus service to West Virginia stations will be available from Train 875 at Brunswick.

    Virginia Railway Express will run on its “S” (reduced-service) schedule

    DC Streetcar and DC Circulator will run on normal schedules.

    Shipping services

    Since Wednesday is a federal holiday, the U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail. All post office locations will be closed. In select areas, Priority Mail Express will be delivered for an additional fee. Normal business hours and delivery will resume Thursday, June 20.

    UPS and FedEx will both run on normal schedules.

    DC

    Trash collection will “slide” to Thursday, June 20, according to the city’s Department of Public Works. For more information, call 311 or (202) 737-4404 or visit www.dpw.dc.gov.

    All DC Public Library locations will be closed on Wednesday, June 19. Libraries will only be accessible online with the use of a library card to check out eBooks, watch videos and stream music.

    According to the District’s Department of Transportation, all parking meter fees are waived on Wednesday.

    All Washington, D.C.–area Smithsonian museums are open.

    The District Department of Transportation will suspend reversible lane operations at the following locations Wednesday:

    • Canal Road between Chain Bridge and Foxhall Road NW
    • Rock Creek Parkway
    • 16th Street NW between Irving Street and Arkansas Avenue NW

    Emergency shelters will remain open on Wednesday. The Downtown Day Services Center, Adams Place Day Center and Zoe’s Doors Youth Drop-In Center will also be open.

    All senior centers operated by the Department of Aging and Community Living will be closed Wednesday.

    The DC Health & Wellness Center and the Sasha Bruce Youth Drop-In Center for residents experiencing homelessness will also be closed.

    Due to the ongoing heat emergency, D.C. will open a select number of its outdoor pools from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Since the District’s pools are on a weekend-only schedule until Monday, June 24, the pools will re-open Saturday and stay open on their weekly six-day schedules for the rest of the season:

    • Banneker Pool
    • Francis Pool
    • Hearst Pool
    • Upshur Pool
    • Langdon Pool
    • Randall Pool
    • Rosedale Pool
    • Ridge Road Pool
    • Oxon Run Pool

    The following recreation centers will also be open, operating from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

    Maryland

    The state’s office Motor Vehicle Administration offices will be closed Wednesday.

    Anne Arundel County

    All county offices will be closed Wednesday.

    Landfill and recycling centers will be closed, but trash will be collected as usual.

    Calvert County

    The following county services will be open on Wednesday:

    • All recreation parks, including Dunkirk District Park, Ward Farm Recreation & Nature Park, Hallowing Point Park and Cove Point Park
    • Appeal Solid Waste Facility
    • Solomons Septage Receiving Facility
    • The Calvert Marine Museum and Museum Store, with Juneteenth programming to take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
    • Chesapeake Hills Golf Course
    • Flag Ponds Nature Park and Kings Landing Park, with extended holiday hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    • Breezy Point Beach, with extended holiday hours from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
    • Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center, Cove Point Pool and Kings Landing Pool

    The following county services will be closed on Wednesday:

    • County offices
    • All county-operated senior centers
    • Meals on Wheels delivery — will resume on Thursday, June 19
    • Community centers
    • County bus service
    • Calvert Library
    • The Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter and Animal Control Division — animal control officers can be reached for emergencies at 410-535-3491
    Charles County

    The Waldorf Senior and Recreational Center will be open for recreational activities only on Wednesday.

    The following county services will be closed on Wednesday:

    • Government offices
    • The Charles County Animal Care Center
    • Indoor and outdoor pools
    • The Charles County Public Library
    • The Nanjemoy Community Center
    • Senior centers and school-based community centers
    • Elite Gymnastics
    Howard County

    All trash, recycling, yard trim and food scrap services will operate normally on Wednesday.

    Parking regulations and fees will be in place, too.

    The Regional Transportation Agency (RTA) will run its regular weekday schedule.

    • Gary J. Arthur, North Laurel and Roger Carter Community Centers
    • Meadowbrook Athletic Complex
    • Robinson Nature Center

    The following county services will be closed on Wednesday:

    • The county’s animal shelter

    • Alcohol Beverage Services stores — 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    The following county services will be modified on Wednesday:

    • Trash and recycling collection will “slide” one day for the rest of the week, with the final collections on Saturday, June 22
    • Public parking garages, lots and curbside meters will be free

    Bulky trash collection will take place by appointment only — scheduled collections will resume Thursday, June 20.

    Thebus will operate normally, except for Route 51X which will resume its regular schedule on Thursday, June 20.

    Call-A-Bus and PGC Link services, including dialysis transportation, will not run on Wednesday. They will run as usual again on Thursday.

    PGC311 will not operate Wednesday, but residents can still submit requests online at PGC311.com.

    The county’s Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement will be closed on Wednesday.

    The Animal Services Facility on Brown Station Road will also be closed.

    Virginia

    HOV restrictions will be lifted across Northern Virginia highways on Wednesday.

    City of Alexandria

    DASH bus services will run normally on Wednesday; so will the King Street Trolley.

    Parking enforcement will be suspended at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts.

    Between Wednesday and Friday, June 21, scheduled residential refuse and recycling collection will be delayed one day. Curbside food waste collection will run as usual.

    The following City services will be open on Wednesday:

    • All museums will be open during their standard hours, except for the Alexandria Black History Museum and Freedom House Museum, which will operate from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Charles Houston Recreation Center and Patrick Henry Recreation Center — 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
    • Warwick Pool, Old Town Pool and Memorial Pool — 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
    • Torpedo Factory Art Center
    • Emergency hotlines

    The following City services will be closed on Wednesday:

    • Recreation and nature centers, besides the ones specified above
    • Libraries
    • Public schools
    • The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria — residents can call 703-746-4444 with animal emergencies or wildlife concerns

    Arlington County

    The county will not enforce metered parking, but permit parking will be in effect unless otherwise specified on the sign.

    Curbside trash, recycling and organics collection will run normally; so will special collections, including brush, metal and e-waste.

    The ART Bus will run on its regular schedule.

    The Specialized Transit for Arlington Residents (STAR) office and call center will be closed, but residents can call in advance to book rides for Wednesday and Thursday, June 20.

    The following county services will be open on Wednesday:

    • Spraygrounds
    • The Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center — with modified hours from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    • Human services including Child Protective Services, Adult Protective Services and Mental Health Emergency Services
