Warm Rainy Day Outfits: Your Outfit Dilemmas, Solved!

This post will show you what to wear on warm rainy days, with outfit ideas.

Dressing for a warm rainy day isn’t quite as simple as bundling up during chilly rainstorms — so I thought it warranted its own article. (See our guide to what to wear on cold rainy days for tips for those chillier storms!)

After all, when it’s hot and sticky out, the last thing you want to wear is a pair of heavy winter rain boots and an insulated raincoat. Not exactly comfortable!

Read on for tips on how to stay comfortable, dry, and stylish even in warm, rainy weather conditions.

Warm Rainy Day Essentials

Think beyond traditional wellies when keeping your feet dry during spring and summer rainstorms.

Short Rain Boots

I love tall rain boots, but in the summer, try a short pair instead.

Chelsea-inspired rain booties won’t overheat your legs and can be worn with anything from dresses to shorts.

This pair comes in multiple colors, including classic black, but a lighter color, like cream/white, feels even more appropriate for the warm season.

Jelly Shoes/Sandals

Jelly shoes have come a long way since the ones you wore in elementary school, and believe it or not, they are a budding trend that’s gaining traction in the fashion world.

These jelly fisherman sandals will look stylish paired with your summer skirts, shorts, and dresses, and you won’t have to worry about them getting soggy since they’re water-resistant.

Rubber Birkenstocks or Rubber Slides

Rubber sandals, including Birkenstocks and slide sandals, will be just as useful at the beach or pool as they will be on a hot, rainy day, thanks to their quick-drying properties.

They are both comfy, easy shoe options (so long as you don’t mind your feet getting a little wet).

Waterproof Sneakers

Whoever invented waterproof sneakers is a genius in my eyes.

I’m a sneaker girl the majority of the time, but soggy, rain-soaked sneakers are (obviously) not appealing.

With a waterproof pair, though, you can take on the elements without that worry while staying comfortable on your feet.

Synthetic Leather Shoes & Boots

Synthetic leather can withstand light rain and provide an edgy touch to your ensemble.

Shoes like lace-up and combat boots can handle a drizzle with ease, and since they don’t go higher than your calves, you won’t feel overheated when wearing them.

Outerwear

A lightweight jacket is the ideal companion for a warm rainy day.

It doesn’t have to be waterproof (see our guide to how to wear a raincoat if you want to go that route), but it should be made from a fabric that dries relatively quickly.

Be sure to pick something lightweight since the goal is to keep the rain off your skin, not necessarily to keep you warm (like in the fall and wintertime).

Classic Trench Coat

A timeless classic, the trench coat is the epitome of elegance on a rainy day. It will instantly elevate just about any outfit and is something you’ll be able to wear for years to come.

Its twill weave fabric is lightweight and will keep you dry — just don’t forget an umbrella!

P.S. — Also, look for cropped trench coat styles, which are currently trending.

Utility Jacket

Timeless with a touch of rugged flair, utility jackets are a practical addition to any wardrobe.

This olive green option is 100% cotton, which isn’t waterproof, but it is lightweight and has a hood, making it a solid choice for a warm, rainy day.

Nylon Parka Jacket

Nylon is a great material to look out for when shopping for a lightweight rain jacket, and this one has a similar design as a utility jacket, with plenty of functional pockets.

Its neutral hue also makes it super versatile, and its nylon fabrication means it’ll dry in no time.

Denim Jacket

Denim jackets prove that denim can be rain-ready, too. This versatile piece adds a touch of casual cool to your outfit while offering a degree of water resistance.

Its adaptable nature allows you to pair it with various tops and bottoms, and you can wear it in the fall and spring seasons, too.

Windbreaker Jacket

For a sportier vibe, go for a windbreaker jacket. This activewear piece is as lightweight as it gets but will keep you dry and shield you from winds (hence its name).

Make sure to choose a hooded windbreaker (like this one) to keep you extra dry.

Accessories

If the forecast is predicting heavy rain and winds, a bubble umbrella is a sensible option.

In addition to my heavy-duty bubble umbrella, I have a compact umbrella that I stash in my bag every day — just in case. (Can you tell I had bad experiences getting caught in surprise storms? These days, I over-prepare for precipitation… constant vigilance!)

Try a denim mini dress for a stylish contrast, which is 100% cotton, meaning it’ll be breathable in warm weather but also won’t easily get soaked through or stick to your body the way other materials might.

Athleisure Rainy Day Outfit

I’m a huge fan of athleisure — it’s what you’ll find me in 90% of the time, including on rainy days.

Pro tip: invest in a pair of waterproof sneakers so that you don’t have to sacrifice comfort when it’s wet outside! These Nike running shoes are waterproof, so they’ll keep your feet dry regardless of the weather conditions, paired with some slouchy socks.

You can still wear shorts since it’ll be warm out, and nothing is easier than a matching set when it comes to getting dressed. This bike shorts and t-shirt set are made from a stretchy, breathable material to help keep you cool and comfy.

These rubber platform sandals are the ultimate summer rain shoes since they are water-resistant, but you can wear them just as easily on a sunny day. Their chunky platform sole also means you’ll be able to walk through (small) puddles without a problem.

7 Outfit Formulas I’ll Never Wear Again (and 7 I’m Wearing on Repeat)

I’ve worn a lot of outfits in my lifetime and tried on even more. There are a few that I’ve worn some variation of hundreds of times and will probably continue to wear for decades to come. At the same time, there are many that, despite my trying to make them work countless times, just weren’t worth a second go. That, or they were worn for years but simply no longer match my sense of style or the ways that fashion’s evolved. The more outfits you wear, the more you learn about what you like—and in turn don’t like.

Since entering into the new year, I’ve really cracked down on those fashion combinations that just don’t fit in with my style and/or current trends anymore, deciding to finally cut them off instead of holding out hope that they’ll make their way back into my good graces. In total, I’ve narrowed down my eliminations to seven full outfits, from skirt and dress looks to denim ones. 7 Things Fashion People Always Wear to Football Games

I’ll admit it—seeing Taylor Swift cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs from a luxury suite has piqued my interest in football a bit. Recent questions I’ve asked my husband have included “What is the quarterback yelling about while they’re all frozen in their positions?” and “Why did the ref just throw a yellow thing on the field?”. Yeah, I’m that clueless about football, as I usually just watch the cheerleaders at the games I’ve attended. But at least I have some ideas about what to wear to a football game.

New Orleans is one of the most unique cities in the US with a distinctive culture that draws visitors from all over the world. To figure out what to wear in New Orleans, you first have to consider the weather. Nawlins, as it’s also called, is surrounded by swampland, so you can expect plenty of heat and humidity. As such, you’ll want to gravitate toward cool, sweat-wicking fabrics that won’t cling to your skin: breezy maxis are perfect for day, and netted dresses will serve you well at night. Add to that visors, the city’s famous parasols, and hand-held fans, and you’ll be set.

Next, you’ll want to think of your itinerary. If you’re visiting New Orleans during Mardi Gras, it’s a fun time to experiment with the festival’s signature colors: purple, green, and gold. Revelers usually dress in layers for the winter celebration, while also showing their personal style by way of tutus, sequins, or fringe — and, of course, endless beaded necklaces. Heading to the city for Essence Festival? Plan for a printed romper, flats, and a fan you can wear during the day; a fun embellished dress for the Superdome concerts at night; and an ivory matching set for the inevitable white party on your calendar.

I’m an F1-Obsessed Fashion Editor—Here’s Everything I Wore to the Miami GP

If you follow me on, well, any social media platform, you’re probably on the brink of sick of me after the content explosion that erupted during the Miami Grand Prix. Though I’ve been to a race before, I wasn’t prepared for everything that the first of three American Formula One races this season had in store for me when I touched down in Miami last Thursday to attend the weekend with Puma, F1’s new exclusive licensing partner and retailer. From the garage tours and on-track action to the celebrities—yes, I did attend a poolside Jonas Brothers concert—and fashion parties, there’s simply nothing quite like Miami during race week, especially for an F1 super fan like me.

Attending a Wine Tasting? Here’s What to Wear

For wine lovers, there’s always a good reason to go for a tasting, whether it’s for a special occasion like a date night or you’ve planned a day-long tour with friends. (Is it rosé season yet?) But with your visit planned, your last task is to figure out what to wear wine tasting, a question that’s maybe best answered by an expert.

We enlisted Magdalena Wojcik, owner of The Blending Lab in Los Angeles, to provide her expertise for the appropriate attire, whether you’re headed to a sun-filled day in the wine country or an evening at a tasting room, such as hers.

“When in wine country, I think of comfort and weather. I like to usually wear a dress. For shoes, comfort is essential. In spring and summer, I stick with sneakers—you never know where you’ll end up! Even in the winter, the sun is strong, so I never leave without a hat.” Wojcik also tells us that sunscreen is her top accessory at the winery.

If you’re opting for a tasting room in the city, there’s nothing like a cool military or moto jacket, according to Wojcik. “Urban wine tasting is a little bit different in my opinion, so I dress for the occasion.” A pair of jeans styled with a plain white tee allows you to be comfortable as you run around town but prepared for when the weather begins to cool down. “Tasting rooms are usually cold because of the wine, and a jacket ensures that you’re not cold when enjoying your wine tasting.” She also recommends comfortable flat shoes as you might not have a seat in the room.

What to Wear (or More Importantly, Not Wear) to the Ballet

As someone who just last month went to her first true ballet, I can say from experience how tricky of an event it is to dress for. Part of that it is because of the allure and exclusivity of it. Often held at lavish theaters, like the Palais Garnier Opera House in Paris and the Vienna State Opera in Austria, it’s easy to assume that attending a large-scale ballet immediately calls for an exquisite outfit that says, “Of course I’m at the ballet. Where else would I be?”

Adding to the pressure to show up sartorially are all the pop-culture moments that take place at or outside of one of the elegant performances, from Carrie Bradshaw in that pink, drop-waist minidress outside of Lincoln Center on Sex and the City (fun fact: Sarah Jessica Parker is the vice chair of the New York City Ballet) to Julia Fox wearing a metallic gown by Zac Posen at the city’s 2022 Fall Fashion Gala. Most often, when we see photos of people attending the ballet, it’s to celebrate a big moment for the company. A red carpet is rolled out, and the expectations for what attendees show up in are high.

But contrary to what you’ve seen in the society pages, experiencing the beauty of a ballet at one of the world’s top theaters isn’t always a glitzy event. Sometimes, say if the performance you’re going to see is taking place in the daytime, the dress code can be quite pared-back. Then again, no one’s going to say a word if you doll it up a little. Really, it’s all about your personal style preferences. According to the New York City Ballet, that and your comfort level are all that matters. Of course, if it’s a gala or other special event you’re attending, always refer to your invitation for dressing details.
