Following a winless September, Western Conference-leading San Diego FC hit the road for their final two matches, starting with a Saturday night contest against the Houston Dynamo.
San Diego (17-9-6, 57 points) is tied for the top spot with the Vancouver Whitecaps (16-6-9, 57 points), who have a game in hand. San Diego finishes the season at Portland on Oct. 18, while the Whitecaps still have home games against the San Jose Earthquakes and FC Dallas sandwiched around a road date at Orlando City.
San Diego FC went 0-2-1 in September, including a 1-0 loss to the visiting Earthquakes last weekend.
‘The most important thing now is to maintain calm, know that we are a good team,’ San Diego coach Mikey Varas said. ‘We have good players. We work really hard, and finding that little extra that we need to make sure that we turn these into not just good, statistically speaking, performances, but wins.’
The good news is that both of San Diego’s final two games are on the road, where the team has compiled a 10-4-1 mark, best in the league.
Houston (9-14-9, 36 points) is two points behind ninth-place San Jose (10-14-8, 38 points) in the battle for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Dynamo come in off a 3-1 loss at Nashville SC that saw them play the last 81 minutes with 10 men after defender Erik Sviatchenko was shown a red card for a foul on Hany Mukhtar at the edge of the box.
‘We’re still in this thing,’ Houston coach Ben Olsen said. ‘We’ve got to look for some results now and all we can do is take care of San Diego at home and hopefully get the results (ahead of traveling to Sporting Kansas City on Decision Day) where we can sneak in with a win there. Six points still give us a good chance.’
However, Houston learned Thursday it will have to do it without arguably its best player, Jack McGlynn. The midfielder, who has career highs in goals (six) and assists (eight), will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery for a foot injury sustained in the Nashville loss.
‘I am very disappointed that I will be unable to help the club push for the playoffs or join the U.S. national team for this important upcoming camp,’ McGlynn posted on his Instagram account. ‘Get behind the team. I know they will make us proud.’
Houston won the first meeting at San Diego 4-3 on July 5 as Argentine forward Ezequiel Ponce scored a brace, including the game-winner in the 10th minute of second-half stoppage time.
Charley Crockett $10 Cowboy Tour 713 Music Hall September 3, 2024
Have you ever met a stranger and been completely amazed by their entire demeanor? The kids these days would call it “swag” or “vibes,” which is something magical and intangible about the person’s attitude. That’s exactly how I feel about Charley Crockett. His chiseled jawline and piercing green eyes attract your attention, and then BOOM!… His voice and southern twang grabs a hold of your soul and doesn’t let go.
Crockett began his set at 713 Music Hall with $10 Cowboy, where he sings “people always ask me, if I’m a rodeo star / doubt if I got 8 seconds / but I can sing you a song!” He definitely fits the casting call for a vintage cowboy film: leather jacket, Stetson on his crown, wranglers and boots. He carries his guitar around the stage like dancing partner, flashing his pearly-white smile with the precision of a heart surgeon.
The singer-songwriter is a native of San Benito, Texas – the same hometown as Freddy Fender of Texas Tornados fame. He later moved to Dallas and also spent time with family in New Orleans, no doubt absorbing every character and experience he encountered into his repertoire of inspiration.

The amber colored accent lights that flanked him and his band on stage added to the warm feel of the show. This wasn’t a modern country set with pyro, lasers, and songs about your dog dying in your truck down by the river. This was more subdued, classic country music with heavy blues influence. “I used to think I was a folk singer” he told the audience. “But then I realized this ain’t nothing but The Blues!”
Crockett mostly sings in a low baritone voice, almost like Johnny Cash or Kris Kristofferson. But peppered in between verses and jam sessions with his band The Blue Drifters, he sometimes allows a yelp and a yee-haw ring out, shifting from serious to rowdy in a split second. In that regard, he reminds me more of Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams Jr.
“Some publication once called me a stylistic man” Crockett told the crowd. “The way I see it, I’m always just myself… and I’m the only person that can do that!” A lady named Juliet, who was enjoying the show next to me, said “He definitely looks like a character from the movie Giant (1956) starring Rock Hudson, James Dean, and Elizabeth Taylor. I quickly added the film to my “must watch” list.

By the time the set list arrived at “The Man From Waco,” Crockett was in total control. There were couples two-stepping around the venue, friend groups drinking beer and singing along to the tracks, and girlfriends holding their boyfriends tight around the waist. I go to a lot of shows, but outside of Rodeo season, this was the most Houston show I’ve seen in a very long time.
There were 2 large, old school neon letters on the stage behind the band, and they read “CC.” It was so cool to see them glow behind Crockett throughout the performance, and they added to the western theme of the tour. As the evening came to a close, the crowd chanted “Charley! Charley! Charley!”
Outside of Rodeo season, this Charley Crockett concert was the most Houston show I’ve seen in a very long time.

Of course Charley and his band returned for an encore, offering Jamestown Ferry before bringing out opening act Vincent Neil Emerson for an awesome cover of Good Hearted Woman by Waylon and Willie.

Eldridge Williams, the Chicago restaurateur behind Wicker Park’s lively Mississippi-style restaurant the Delta, is setting himself up for a bustling 2024 with two new dining and drinking spots coming this spring and summer to River North: The Pink Polo Social Club and Bar, a coffee shop and co-working space by day and ambitious cocktail bar by night; and Red River Dicks, a country-western saloon and barbecue spot touted as the only Black-owned venue of its kind in the Midwest.
These major moves from Williams and G.O.O.D. Pineapple Hospitality partner Robert Johnson will begin in late spring or early summer with the debut of the Pink Polo inside the Chicago Collection hotel at 312 W. Chestnut Street. Then they’ll unveil Red River Dicks in late summer at 1935 N. Sedgwick Street, the former home of long-vacant sports bar Sedgwick’s Bar & Grill.
Despite the sizable chasm between the venues’ styles and cuisines, both represent an ethos Williams holds dear. “I have this theory that for me to be able to get behind an idea or project, it has to have a story,” he says. “It has to have substance, something that’s more tangible than just food and beverage.”
In the case of Red River Dicks, that story is a powerful one, inspired in large part by the life and legacy of 18th-century African American cowboy Nat (pronounced “Nate”) Love. Born into enslavement in 1854 in Tennessee, Love — also known by his nickname, Red River Dick — was among the first and most famous Black cowboys of the Old West. Historians estimate that from the 1860s to 1880s, around 25 percent of cowboys were African American, though media portrayals have largely obscured their roles.
A Memphis, Tennessee, native and a rare Black restaurant owner in Wicker Park, Williams has engaged head-on with the disparities BIPOC (Black, indigenous, and people of color) hospitality operators face on Chicago’s North Side. He’d long harbored a desire to open a country bar, citing his love of a scene in 2008 comedy Soul Man where Samuel L. Jackson and the late Bernie Mac portray soul singers who find themselves onstage in a White-dominated honkey tonk saloon. “They were singing soul music, but it was like they bridged cultures and blended with this country aesthetic,” he says. “Everyone started line dancing, it was beautiful. I want to bottle that energy.”
The pieces began to come together when Williams learned about Black cowboys from Netflix documentary series High on the Hogand, after deeper research, encountered Love’s story. The barbecue menu will be based on the famed cowboy’s travels with representation from Tennessee, Kansas City, and Texas. Though the lineup is still in development, the team teases options like Crusted Cowboy beef ribs and a Tennessee smokehouse duck sandwich. Williams also promises a selection of “world barbecue” for those looking to expand their palate beyond the classics. Given his Memphis roots, he feels confident that barbecue fans will be satisfied. “There won’t be any half-stepping here, we’re going to do it right,” he says.
As in any Western watering hole, the bar at Red River Dicks will be a focal point, reaching almost the entire length of the 110-seat space. There, the team will offer an ample selection of whiskies and bourbons but hopes that patrons won’t overlook a lineup of “exciting, ambitious” cocktails, including group-sized concoctions that reflect the bar’s upbeat energy. Williams promises intricate custom woodwork, reclaimed tabletops, and a rustic Western aesthetic buoyed by a 15-foot cast iron hood (a relic from the previous tenant) that will hang overhead as a chandelier, as well as a soundtrack of both classic and modern country tunes.
“I want [customers] to feel as if they have been placed in a time capsule and they’re sitting in a bar from the 18th Century,” he says. “I want it to feel like a legitimate saloon that is somewhere in this old country-western town that you just stumbled across.”
Chicagoans can expect a very different scene at the Pink Polo, a chic replacement for shuttered snack spot Drop Shop Coffee. Williams and Johnson envision the space as a hub for remote workers and organizations with the atmosphere of a private club sans a hefty membership fee. At the Delta, Williams has worked with groups that don’t have a permanent space to gather and he plans to replicate that approach in River North with meeting spaces, coffee, and espresso drinks. The space bears a mix of industrial design and softer elements like Persian rugs and leather seating, as well as a dining room space that seats up to 60.
Once the workday is over, the Pink Polo will transition into a cocktail den equipped with a marble tile bar that seats around a dozen. But Williams has bigger plans than humdrum after-work drinks — he aims to unveil an “extremely ambitious cocktail program” that channels the over-the-top energy of 2000s cocktail culture. Though he’s keeping his cards close to his chest for now, “We’re not going to hold back,” he says. “I want [the Pink Polo] to be globally recognized for its cocktail program.”
While drinks are the star, the team will also offer a selection of small plates such as butter-poached ceviche and a Peruvian spin on nachos, tapping into the cuisines of South America, where the sport of polo is popular, says Williams. It provides a lively counterpoint to the intentionally preppy, country club implications of the venue’s name, which the founders drew from a lyric in Kanye West’s 2007 track “Barry Bonds.”
“I took my favorite social club and I took my favorite cocktail bar and imagined they had a baby, but I raised it,” says Williams. “That’s what the Pink Polo is going to be.”

This television series features eight episodes and is based on the life of the first African-American Deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River, Bass Reeves. Created by Chad Feehan, season 1 premiered on November 5, 2023, and it follows a weekly release schedule.

Asking rents climbed by $6, or 0.3%, from January to February. That is the first monthly increase in rents in five months, since they last rose in September 2022, according to a recent survey. The 0.3% increase is only somewhat smaller than the typical February increase of 0.4%, averaged over data from 2016 to 2020, suggesting that the rental market remains somewhat cooler than normal.
Typical asking rents at the national level now stand at $1,976, which is 6.3% higher than one year ago, but 0.5% below the peak of $1,987 observed in September 2022. That annual growth rate is now down more than 10 percentage points from the peak growth rate observed one year ago this month: 17.0%, the record-high pace reached in February 2022.
Monthly changes: Winter comes to Florida
The steepest monthly declines in rent were observed this February in Cleveland (-1.0%), Jacksonville (-0.4%), Salt Lake City (-0.4%), Richmond (-0.3%), and Miami (-0.3%). That bucks the recent trend of mostly Western cities, plus New Orleans, having the largest rent drops earlier this winter. The substantial declines observed in two of Florida’s major metropolitan areas suggests some cooling may finally be arriving after years of very rapid rent growth.
Rents rose the most on a monthly basis in Hartford (1.3%), Sacramento (0.9%), Chicago (0.8%), New Orleans (0.6%) and Raleigh (0.6%). Many of these markets represent more affordable alternatives to competing cities, which may explain their recently climbing rents.
Western markets: Stepping off the roller coaster
Rents are very close to where they were last February in several inland West markets. On a year-over-year basis, rents are down 1.0% in Las Vegas, and only up modestly in Phoenix (1.0%), New Orleans (1.8%), Sacramento (2.5%), and Baltimore (2.9%). Annual rent growth didn’t fall much further in these markets from its pace in January.
The Western markets may be going through a lull after breakneck rent growth in 2021, when they saw a great deal of migration from expensive West Coast markets, followed by some mean reversion in rent growth in 2022. The cumulative effect, though, is that rents still stand much higher than pre-pandemic: 3-year growth in Phoenix, for instance, is still a staggering 37%.
Annual rent growth was highest in Cincinnati (9.4%), Indianapolis (9.1%), Louisville (8.9%), Kansas City (8.2%), and Boston (8.1%), reflecting the continued strength of demand in affordable, mid-sized Midwestern metropolitan areas, as well as a belated rebound for Boston. Miami’s absence from the top 5 MSAs for year-over-year rent growth is also notable, after growing the fastest earlier in the pandemic.
The most expensive major market is San Jose, where typical monthly rent is $3,189, followed by San Francisco ($3,084), New York ($3,084), San Diego ($2,959), and Boston ($2,958).
The beginning of a return to normal?
Not only did monthly rent growth in February break its 4-month streak in the red; it also climbed much closer to average pre-pandemic growth rates for that time of year. In each of the last 3 months, the monthly growth rate was 25 to 30 basis points lower than the pre-pandemic average: -0.41% in November (vs -0.11%); -0.26% in December (vs -0.01%); and -0.06% in January (vs 0.21%). But this February, growth was only 13 basis points below the 0.43% averaged at this time of year in the five years of data from 2016 to 2020.
If monthly rent growth for the rest of the year simply matches its pre-pandemic average growth rate in each month, the annual pace of growth would continue to decelerate, from February’s 6.3% to a low of 3.0% in September. A normal year of rent growth would be a major relief for renters after last year’s blistering pace of rent hikes. Year-over-year rent growth has already dropped precipitously, from a record-high of 17.0% in February of 2022.
The deceleration of annual asking rent growth in February only heightens the contrast with official inflation measures of rent growth, like the Consumer Price Index’s Rent of Primary Residence component, which grew 8.6% in January (the most recent month available at this time). Previous research suggests a 12-month lag between annual ZORI (Zillow Observed Rent Index) growth and annual CPI Rent growth, giving cause for hope that the year-over-year growth in the latter could begin to decelerate sometime soon.
One small data point consistent with such a slowdown was that the compounded annual growth rate of January’s monthly change in CPI Rent, 8.8%, was already down measurably from its pandemic-era peak of 11.1% in September of 2022. Given that monthly CPI Rent growth accelerated sharply last May and June, those months might be the most likely time this year to see a peak and turning point in year-over-year CPI Rent growth.

His heart was super, super fragile,” Rhods said.Rhods teaches fifth grade at Karen Western Elementary School in Ralston. So far this school year, she has spent a lot of time out of the classroom to be by Caden’s side.”You’re trying to be there for your son and for my two other kids I have at home and then I’m also trying to be there for my students,” she said.Rhods’ student, Case, noticed that struggle about a month before Caden died, and decided she wanted to do whatever she could to help. “I got him a blanket and I felt like that wasn’t enough so I started a GoFundMe,” Case said.With the help of her mom, Case was able to create a GoFundMe, raising $2,000 for her favorite teacher.”I thought it would just be, not like to $2,000. I thought it would just be like a couple hundred dollars,” Case said.For Rhods, the joy of all of this is about so much more than the money.”It’s more of, what she did to show her compassion and caring for others. COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Norwegian police said two climate activists tried in vain Friday to glue themselves to Edvard Munch’s 1893 masterpiece “The Scream” at an Oslo museum and no harm was reported to the painting of a waif-like figure appearing to scream.
Police said they were alerted by the National Museum of Norway and had three people under their “control.” A third person filmed the pair that tried to affix to the painting, Norwegian news agency NTB said.
The museum said that the room where the glass-protected painting is exhibited “was emptied of the public and closed,” and will reopen as soon as possible. The rest of museum remained open.
Police said there was glue residue on the glass mount.
A video of the incident showed museum guards holding two activists with one shouting “I scream for people dying” and another one shouts “I scream when lawmakers ignore science” while a person was shielding the painting from the protesters.
Environmental activists from the Norwegian organization “Stopp oljeletinga” — Norwegian for Stop Oil Exploration — were behind the stunt, saying they “wanted to pressure lawmakers into stopping oil exploration.” Norway is a major producer of offshore oil and gas.
“We are campaigning against ‘Scream’ because it is perhaps Norway’s most famous painting,” activist spokeswoman Astrid Rem told The Associated Press. “There have been lots of similar actions around Europe, they have managed something that no other action has managed: achieve an extremely large amount of coverage and press.”
It was the latest episode in which climate activists have targeted famous paintings in European museums.
Two Belgian activists who targeted Johannes Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring” in a Dutch museum in October were sentenced to two months in prison. The painting wasn’t damaged and was returned to its wall a day later.
Earlier this month, climate protesters threw mashed potatoes at a Claude Monet painting in a German museum and a similar protest happened in London, where protesters threw soup over Vincent van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” at the National Gallery. In both those cases, the paintings also weren’t damaged.
