    West Sacramento’s mayor is the latest person to announce plans to campaign for one of California’s congressional districts in the 2026 midterm election since the passing of Proposition 50.The voter-approved measure aims to send more Democrats to Congress by redrawing five Republican-heavy districts to include more Democratic voters.     The voter-approved measure aims to send more Democrats to Congress by redrawing five Republican-heavy districts to include more Democratic voters.     One of the bridges commuters use between Sacramento and West Sacramento will shut down over several days for maintenance.The I Street Bridge, built in 1911, will close beginning at 6 a.m. on Oct. 6 for Union Pacific Railroad to complete repairs to the exterior siding of a building on the bridge. All travel across the bridge will be paused during the repair period, including drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians.”I’m wondering, like, how am I going to get to downtown? How am I going to get into that area? Because that’s where everything is. Everything’s popping in that area. So it’s going to be tricky,” said Oskar Castaneda, a West Sacramento resident.The primary alternate route during the closure will be the Tower Bridge. For drivers traveling on I Street from Sacramento to West Sacramento, turn left on 3rd Street and then take a right on Capitol Mall. For drivers traveling from West Sacramento to Sacramento, take 5th or 3rd streets up to Cabaldon Parkway and turn left to get onto the Tower Bridge.   • Central California police officer dies in on-duty crash with big rig

    A Central California police officer died in an on-duty crash with a big rig Friday night, authorities said. 

    The California Highway Patrol, which is handling the investigation, said the officer was driving a marked Chowchilla Police Department patrol vehicle east on Highway 152 near the intersection of Road 13 just after 10:30 p.m. Friday. 

    When the driver of a big rig attempted to cross the eastbound lanes at the intersection, the front of the patrol vehicle struck the right side of the big rig’s rear trailer, the CHP said. 

    The patrol vehicle was stuck under the trailer as both vehicles came to a stop, blocking both lanes of Road 13 and south edge of Highway 152, the CHP said. 

    The officer, identified by officials as Ray Barrantes, died from his injuries, the CHP said. 

    “We are holding the officer’s family and friends in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” the Chowchilla Police Department said in a statement. “This officer was a dedicated and respected member of our department and had many years of dedicated law enforcement service.”

    The CHP said the driver of the big rig was not injured and that DUI does not appear to be a factor. 

    Gov. Gavin Newsom released a statement Saturday night, saying flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff in memory of Barrantes’ service. 

    “Jennifer and I are saddened by the loss of Officer Barrantes,” Newsom said in the statement. “We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and Chowchilla Police Department colleagues.”

    In a social media post, the West Sacramento Police Department said Barrantes was a former officer at the department. 

    “We are saddened to learn of the passing of former WSPD Officer Ray Barrantes, who was serving with Chowchilla PD at the time of his death,” the social media post read. 

    “Moments of tragedy like this are devastating to our department and especially the family of this amazing officer,” Chowchilla Police Chief Jeff Palmer said. “It is going to take time for our department to heal from this tragic loss.”

    The CHP said the crash is still under investigation.

    Sacramento bicyclist killed in semi-truck crash

    (FOX40.COM) — A bicyclist is dead after a fatal crash with a semi-truck on Monday afternoon, according to the West Sacramento Police Department.

    At around 2:26 p.m., WSPD responded to the area of Industrial Boulevard near Stone Boulevard for a report of a traffic collision involving a bicyclist and a semi-truck. When officers arrived,  they said the West Sacramento Fire Department was tending to the bicyclist. Despite their efforts, the victim, a man in his early twenties, was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Police said the semi-truck driver was cooperative and “there is no indication of the driver being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

    Roadways were temporarily closed, but have since reopened.

    As the Athletics arrival in West Sacramento gets closer, small businesses are coming up with a game plan. It happened Friday afternoon in the Brodderick Bryte neighborhood in West Sacramento. The sign was for Emiliano Rosas. He’s a candidate for West Sacramento City Council’s District One seat. “My initial reaction was it was disheartening,” Rosas said. “Given what’s going on in national politics right now, I think it’s unfortunate to see kind of the discord and the vitriol that is going on.     WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) – Giants starting pitcher Blake Snell talks with reporters following Friday night’s dazzling debut with the River Cats, where he helped Triple-A Sacramento defeat the Oklahoma City Baseball Club 5-1.

    The two-time Cy Young Award winner talks about building off of last week’s rehab start with San Jose, how he’s feeling coming off of a left adductor strain, the injury bug biting San Francisco, looking forward to returning to the big leagues and Sutter Health Park as a home for Major League Baseball games next season.

    Snell, 31, tossed five scoreless innings on Friday night without allowing a hit. He struck out 10 batters, walked one, a hit batter in the first inning and he threw a wild pitch after getting his signs crossed up with River Cats catcher Jakson Reetz.

    Snell’s impressive outing consisted of 60 pitches, 41 of them for strikes, before he left the game in the fifth inning to throw 15 more pitches in Sacramento’s bullpen.

    “I’m anxious to get back to the big leagues, but be myself and to be able to help the team out, “Snell said after Friday’s outing. “Early on, I didn’t help the team at all. Didn’t help myself at all. Being able to feel strong, confident and make the pitches I know I can make, I’m really excited about that.”

    After signing with the Giants late into Spring Training, Snell is looking to overcome his poor outings with San Francisco before going down with the adductor injury. He went 0-3 in those starts with a dubious 11.57 ERA, allowing 15 runs over 11.2 innings pitched, giving up 18 hits, and recording 12 strikeouts to five walks.

    In what figures to be his last test before returning to the Giants, Snell said that he’ll be talking to the organization over the weekend to assess his progress, but he hopes his next start will be with San Francisco.

    “We’ll get back tomorrow and talk, and see where to go from there,” Snell said.

    (FOX40.COM) — The newest members of the California Highway Patrol were recently sworn in during a graduation ceremony at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento.

    On Friday, 106 officers were added to the agency as a part of the CHP’s multiyear recruiting campaign to fill 1,000 vacant officer positions.

    “These men and women have chosen to dedicate themselves to a career in public service. They have completed several months of rigorous training at the CHP Academy to prepare them to serve the people of California,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “While this job is one of the most difficult things they will do in their entire life, it is also the most rewarding thing that they will do, and we are proud to have them as part of the CHP family.”

    The swearing-in ceremony for the new officers marks the completion of a 26-week training at the CHP Academy. Training reportedly consists of “nobility in policing,” leadership, professionalism and ethics, and cultural diversity. 

    Officials said cadets also receive instruction on mental illness response and crisis intervention techniques. In addition, training covers vehicle patrol, crash investigation, first aid, and the apprehension of suspected violators, and other police-related activity.

    The new officers will report to one of the 103 CHP Area offices throughout the state to begin serving the people of California.

    (FOX40.COM) — A man pulled a loaded gun on an officer during the process of being arrested for retail theft at Target, according to the West Sacramento Police Department.

    Earlier this week, officials said that Target Assets Protection contacted the West Sacramento Police Department (WSPD) about a shoplifter and an accomplice who was in the store “concealing merchandise” in a bag.

    Upon arrival, officers said that one person suspected of retail theft exited the store and attempted to hide in the grass on the Clarksburg Trail. He was arrested and taken into custody.

    A separate WSPD officer entered the Target store to contact the accomplice who was reportedly seated in the Asset Protection office. When the officer attempted to handcuff the accomplice, he allegedly began to fight the officer. During the altercation, police said the suspect removed a loaded Glock handgun from his backpack which was later confirmed to be stolen.

    The suspect dropped the gun during the fight, and a Target Assets Protection team member kicked the gun out of the way, according to police. The officer eventually handcuffed the suspect.
