  • ‘We just want the guy who did it’: Family of 9-year-old struck by car speaks out

    [ad_1]

The family of a 9-year-old who was injured in a hit-and-run in West Philly on Saturday said they want justice for the boy, who has been released from the hospital, but faces a long road to recovery.

“It’s a kid, I’m very emotional. We just want the guy who did it,” said Jasmine Jones, the aunt of Thomas, who has been identified by his family as the child severely injured during Saturday’s hit-and-run.

The incident happened at about 12:22 p.m. on Feb. 14, 2026, along the 2200 block of South 56th Street (police had previously said it was at the 800 block).

The driver who fled the scene is still being sought by Philly police.

The car involved has been described by police as a 2010 to 2013 Honda Crosstour with a bicycle rack on the roof. The car is mostly burgundy in color, but has mismatched panels.

Thomas’ mother, Kimyetta Demby, said her son is home now, but he has a broken leg and still requires surgery.

“He has a broken femur, he has to get plastic surgery on his lip and he has bruises and abrasions from being dragged all over his body,” Demby said.

Video from a camera at the scene shows the driver stop, get out to look and then flee the scene.

Despite his injuries, Thomas’ family said the honor roll student at Mastery Charter will certainly be back to playing the sports he loves.

“He’s strong. He’s strong,” Jones said. “Tom is strong. My guy is strong. Yup.”

Anyone who sees the car or has any information on it is urged to call 911 or contact the Philadelphia Police Department at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or anonymously online here.

  • Cyclist killed in Philly hit-and-run ID’d as longtime Bob and Barbara’s DJ

    [ad_1]

A 54-year-old cyclist who was struck and killed in a hit-and-run in the Overbrook neighborhood of West Philadelphia on Saturday morning has been identified as June Rodriguez, a longtime employee and DJ for Bob and Barbara’s Lounge in Center City.

“June was with the Bob and Barbara’s family for decades and may have worn the most hats,” the lounge wrote in a post to social media. “From a long standing member of the drag show DJ team, to solo feature nights in the booth, he also greeted you at the door, he worked security inside, he helped cover barback shifts and most recently made the move into learning how to tend your bar.”

“A June of all trades, he was gracious and willing to do whatever he could for this bar and for all that crossed his path. He will be very missed and forever loved; we will be posting updates of memorials to come.”

In addition to working at Bob and Barbara’s Lounge, Rodriguez was popular in the house music scene.

Some of Rodriguez’s friends and family held a vigil for him at Penn Treaty Park in Fishtown on Sunday, playing music and remembering him at a place where he was known to host DJ events.

“It doesn’t seem real. I see him every week,” said James Thomas, who worked with June. “I don’t want to forget him. I don’t want anybody to forget that man. He’s such a great man.”

State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, whose district is in North Philadelphia, also knew June and considered him a friend.

“June knew how to lighten every room he walked into,” he said. “He treated people with a kindness that we can only hope that we could see matched around this world.”

Rodriguez’s brother, Moise, told NBC10 he wishes more was known about the driver involved in his June’s death.

“It’s ridiculous,” he said. “I don’t understand how we don’t know not even the license plate of the vehicle when there’s cameras everywhere and nobody’s even come forward to say that they know about this is pretty sad.

According to police, the crash happened at around 3:44 a.m. at the intersection of North 56th Street and Lancaster Avenue when a red SUV, possibly a Jeep Grand Cherokee, struck Rodriguez as he attempted to make a left turn on his way home from work.

Both Rodriguez and the SUV were initially traveling westbound on Lancaster Avenue, with the car trailing behind Rodriguez. However, Rodriguez tried to make a left turn southbound onto North 56th Street when he was struck by the SUV, police said.

The SUV initially appeared to swerve and then continued westbound on Lancaster Avenue, fleeing the scene, police said.

Rodriguez was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:47 a.m., police said.

Although police have not said if speed was a factor in the crash, neighbors told NBC10 that drivers often speed down the section of Lancaster Avenue where it occurred.

“Everybody loved him. To see him go like this is so tragic,” Thomas said. “Who ever did it please come forward.”

According to Philly Bike Action, a bicyclist activist group in the city, Rodriguez was the seventh cyclist to be killed by a motorist this year, which is up from three total deaths in 2024.

The crash is being investigated by the Philadelphia Police Department, and anyone with information is urged to contact investigators at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or anonymously online here.

  • Caught on Cam: Fight over weed smoke ends in gunfire at Overbook Wingstop

    [ad_1]

Law enforcement officials have released surveillance footage in the hopes of tracking down two men after, police said, an employee at a Wingstop in Philly’s Overbrook neighborhood was injured in a shooting.

On Wednesday morning, police shared surveillance video of the incident on social media.

Though the video claims the incident happened on “September 8, 2025” the shooting was previously said to have happened on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025, at about 5:18 p.m., officials initially said.

NBC10 has reached out to police to clarify.

In this incident, officials said that a shooting happened shortly after two men — one described as having shoulder-length, braided hair and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a clock logo, black and white “Jordan” sneakers and a ball cap with a “K” logo and another described as having shoulder-length braided hair and wearing a black and blue sweatshirt with an “Amari” logo on the chest and “Amari” written on black and white sneakers — walked into the shop.

At that time, police said, an argument erupted between the pair and store employees after the men allegedly used marijuana in the store.

During this argument, officials said, one of the men produced a firearm and fired once, hitting a female employee — though, she declined medical attention after the incident.

Both men, police said, fled the scene in a white sedan, that was possibly a late model Volvo S60.

Police are asking anyone with information on this incident to contact the Philadelphia Police Department’s Shooting Investigation Group at 215-686-8270/71.

  • Cyclist fatally struck by speeding driver in hit-and-run crash in West Philly

    [ad_1]

A bicyclist was struck and killed by a speeding driver in a hit-and-run crash Tuesday morning in West Philadelphia, police said.

The crash happened around 9:50 a.m. on the 1600 block of Belmont Avenue, a section of Fairmount Park near the Please Touch Museum and the Shofuso Japanese Cultural Center.

A black Dodge Charger and a black Chrysler were both speeding along Belmont Avenue as they approached Avenue of the Republic, where the cyclist was traveling east when he was struck by one of the vehicles, police said. The cyclist was thrown from his bike and later taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. He has not been identified.

On the way to the scene, investigators spotted the Dodge Charger parked on the side of the 3200 block of Sedgley Avenue. Police said they observed a group of men who appeared to be inspecting the front end of the car for damage. Officers stopped to investigate and seized the vehicle. Authorities did not provide details on the whereabouts of the Chrysler and whether the driver of that car is sought in the investigation.

No arrests have been made, police said.

The crash marks the fourth time this year that a cyclist has been killed in a collision with a car in the city. There were three cyclists killed in crashes in Philadelphia last year, down from 10 in 2023. Earlier this year, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia reported that traffic deaths in the city have plateaued in recent years after spiking at 158 in 2020. There were 124 traffic deaths last year and 64 this year, including Tuesday morning’s crash.

In this year’s budget, Philadelphia made a $30 million investment over the next six years in the city’s Vision Zero initiative to improve traffic safety. The increase in funding came a year after Mayor Cherelle Parker had made cuts to the Vision Zero program. The city saw an uptick in activism among cyclists after 30-year-old Barbara Friedes, a doctor at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, was fatally struck by a drunk driver in Rittenhouse in July 2024. The driver in that case was sentenced to spend between six and 20 years in prison.

Police said anyone with information about Tuesday’s hit-and-run crash can call the department’s tip line at 215-686-8477 or submit an anonymous tip online.

1 killed, 8 others wounded in West Philadelphia shooting at block party

    00:59

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Police now say at least nine people were shot, including one person who died, after a mass shooting at a birthday party in West Philadelphia early Saturday morning.

The victims include seven women and two men, ranging in age from 17 to 51 years old.

“We were all standing on the porch. Next thing you know we’re hearing gunshots,” said a 22-year-old witness. “Everybody gets down. We’re running in the house, jumping over people.”

A 22-year-old woman who wants to stay anonymous recounted what she went through during a mass shooting near Wyalusing Avenue and North Creighton Street.

She said, during the chaos, one of the victims was laying on top of her while they both ducked for cover.

“She got shot on her legs and they took her away in an ambulance,” she said.

Police said one man died just before 6 a.m after he was shot several times in his face and body. Eight others were also shot but are in stable condition.

Police said a large crowd came together for a birthday party but by 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, they responded to the scene after countless 911 calls came flooding in.

“Emergency 911 received numerous calls about a shooting on the highway with numerous victims also numerous gunshots heard in the area,” Philadelphia Police Captain Anthony Mirabella, Jr., said.

Police said they found nearly 40 shell casings where gunshot markings can still be seen in this area of the block.

Just a short distance from where the shots were fired, Xavier Glynn, Sr., and his son were playing basketball Saturday afternoon.

“I thought this was a peaceful area, that’s why I decided to bring my son,” Glynn said.

He said the ongoing violence needs to stop.

“We’re losing our children and we’re losing our community,” Glynn said.

Police said they have no motive and no arrests have been made yet.
