  • Stonewall Young Democrats bounces back from “quiet year” with Hero Awards

    [ad_1]

This Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments regarding two cases about transgender girls in sports: Little v. Hecox and West Virginia v. B.P.J.

In 2020, Idaho Governor Brad Little signed into law HB 500, which bans transgender girls and women from participating in school sports. This affected the first case’s respondent: transgender student athlete Lindsay Hecox, who was barred from participating in the track and cross country teams as well as intramural soccer and running clubs.

In 2021, then-governor of West Virginia, Jim Justice, approved HB 3293, which enacts a similar ban. Becky Pepper-Jackson (B.P.J.), now an incoming high school student, opposed the discriminatory policy when it prevented her from joining her then-middle school’s cross country and track and field teams. Pepper-Jackson has also only undergone female puberty due to gender-affirming care, but West Virginia argues that its anti-transgender policies should be upheld because of her assigned sex at birth.

For LGBTQ+ advocates and allies, these cases illustrate the burden and harm transgender people face daily as their rights to privacy, dignity, care, and inclusion are constantly at risk of being eroded and stripped completely.

Experts also wonder if these cases could potentially reshape the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause as well as the civil rights law, Title IX. The former prohibits discrimination on other factors aside from race, though governments have argued that certain “suspect classifications” can be looked at more closely through “heightened scrutiny.” The latter prohibits sex-based discrimination in federally-funded schools.

What is unfolding and how local advocates are informing change:

The fight ahead is weary, and experts are certain that the states involved will not concede their points. In a webinar organized yesterday by the Williams Institute, several LGBTQ+ policy experts, including Rutgers Law School professor and anti-discrimination scholar Katie Eyer, examined where these cases may be heading, as well as efforts to muddy the arguments.

“It seems possible that the court might try to sidestep that issue here by saying that these laws don’t target transgender people at all,” Eyer said. “I think for most people, this seems bananas: like an upside-down world. We all know these laws were about transgender people.”

Jenny Pizer, an attorney for the LGBTQ+ civil rights legal organization Lambda Legal and a co-counsel member for the B.P.J. case, affirmed this sentiment at a press conference organized Tuesday by Lambda Legal and AIDS Healthcare Foundation affinity group, FLUX. “They’ve gone to great lengths to say there’s no discrimination,” Pizer said. “[They’re arguing] it’s just technicalities or classifications.”

Eyer was one of three Equal Protections scholars who filed an amicus brief to be considered in the Supreme Court cases. An amicus brief is a legal document submitted by someone who is not involved directly in a case but who may offer additional perspectives and information that can inform the ruling process.

Eyer’s brief provided historical context that clarified the disadvantages of blanket sex-based policies. These types of laws, according to Eyer, uphold stereotypes over nuance, truth, and equal protection guidelines. For Pepper-Jackson, who has only undergone female puberty and who does not “benefit” from what dissidents define as a sex-based competitive “advantage,” the state should have provided her the ability to argue that she should have the same rights as other girls.

“Of course, the state hasn’t done that here,” Eyer said. “Under these precedents, the Supreme Court should invalidate the laws as applied to those trans girls who really don’t have a sex-based competitive advantage.”

    Who are these bills protecting?

The states argue that their policies are merely “ensuring safety and fairness in girls’ sports.” But queer advocates understand that this is a veneer for the exclusion of transgender people from society. Forcing trans youth out of sports “does not protect anyone,” according to California LGBTQ Health and Human Services Network director Dannie Ceseňa, who spoke at Tuesday’s press conference.

“It encourages the scrutiny of children’s bodies. It fuels gender policing, and it creates hostile school environments — not safer ones,” said Ceseňa. “Our youth should not inherit a world that treats their existence as a threat.”

    Transgender people are systemically disempowered

At yesterday’s webinar, Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the Williams Institute Andrew Flores discussed his own amicus brief in support of Pepper-Jackson. The brief highlights the need for “heightened judicial scrutiny” in Pepper-Jackson’s case because the majority of political processes “systemically fail” transgender people.

For example, the transgender community faces substantial barriers in exercising their voter rights because of voter identification laws and other policies that regulate and define identity. “Even being able to gain access to the franchise is a burden for transgender people,” Flores said. “The court does play an important role there. It can grant legitimacy to arguments…or at least [acknowledge] that these issues are more complicated than maybe how they’ll receive them.”

    What’s next?

Experts are hesitant about where the cases stand. “Bottom line: I don’t know what the court is going to do in these cases. They may send them back down for further development,” Pizer said, who thinks future rulings will not shift more overarching policies regarding transgender rights. “I think they will probably decide based only on laws about sports, not laws more broadly about the rights of trans folks.”

But whatever is decided, the impacts will trickle down to everyone. While the cases deal specifically with anti-transgender policies, experts warn that LGBTQ+ issues have always been tied to racial, economic, and disability justice. “There’s this looming constitutional campaign to really undermine civil rights,” said Eyer. “That affects LGBTQ people. It affects people of color. It affects people with disabilities. It affects everybody, and it really is concerning.”

As transgender inclusion and safety are being argued on the largest legal stage, advocates are asking: “When are you going to step up?” They are also sending a direct message to transgender youth: “We see you, we believe in you, and we are fighting for you,” said Ceseňa. “You deserve joy, community, and care. You deserve a future that reflects who you are and not who anyone or any politician demands you to be. Trans youth deserve better.”

  • Victims lose jewelry, Rolex in West Hollywood daytime robberies

    [ad_1]

Authorities in West Hollywood were investigating two brazen robberies Thursday that left victims without their luxury watches and jewelry.

The first robbery occurred around 2 p.m. in the 8100 block of Santa Monica Boulevard, according to the LA County Sheriff’s Department. A group of armed suspects got out of a vehicle and demanded the victim’s watch and took the jewelry from his neck.

Similarly, during the second robbery, four suspects demanded the victim’s gold Rolex watch before fleeing in a grey sedan. The robbery happened about a mile away, around 3:34 p.m., near Melrose and Westmount Drive.

Neither victims were hurt, and it’s unclear at this moment if the robberies are connected.

No arrests have been made and the investigation remains open.

Earlier this month, a man visiting from San Francisco was ambushed by at least three armed men and was robbed of everything he had.

  • 41st AIDS Walk LA steps out with “Community Is the Cure” message

    [ad_1]

Thousands gathered Sunday at West Hollywood Park for the 41st annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles.

This year’s theme, “Community is the Cure,” was meant to reflect a sobering reality: the fight against HIV is not over, and the community must once again lead the way.

Founded in 1985 as a response to government inaction, AIDS Walk Los Angeles continues to raise critical funds for APLA Health, which provides comprehensive services to more than 22,000 Angelenos each year, with a strong focus on people with or at risk for HIV.

Team ABC7 | Disney PRIDE shows their spirit at AIDS Walk Los Angeles

Support ABC7 & Disney PRIDE’s AIDS Walk Team by purchasing merchandise from the ABC7 Pride collection!

These include access to free and low-cost HIV medical care, PrEP and PEP, testing, case management, benefits counseling, mental health services, and the nation’s largest food pantry for people living with HIV.

“This event was born out of urgency, and it’s just as relevant today,” said Craig E. Thompson, CEO of APLA Health. “We’ve made incredible progress in the fight against HIV, but that progress is under direct threat from funding cuts and political attacks.”

While scientific advances like U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable) and PrEP have transformed HIV prevention and treatment, organizers say too many people still face barriers to accessing the care they need.

“We’re being pushed back-but we’re still facing forward,” said Thompson. “AIDS Walk is how we protect each other, amplify our voices, and keep moving forward, together.”

This year’s opening ceremony was hosted by ABC7’s Coleen Sullivan, and featured speakers U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, West Hollywood Mayor Chelsea Lee Byers and L.A. County Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath among others, as well as a special live performance by Heidi N Closet, star of RuPaul’s Drag Race, who was introduced by fellow Drag Race alum Monét X Change.

  • Man recounts being robbed at gunpoint while visiting in West Hollywood

    [ad_1]

A man from the Bay Area is speaking out after being the victim of a brazen robbery at gunpoint in West Hollywood.

Abram Cortez says he was visiting with his husband from San Francisco when at least three armed men ambushed him and took everything he had.

“You know, they were checking my body for my stuff, asking me what else I had, asking me to give them all other things, and I, you know, I let them take everything,” said Cortez.

The Bay Area man estimates the stolen items are worth more than $10,000.

“They weren’t very specific with what they were asking for. They were just asking for my things, so I don’t think that I was necessarily a target,” said Cortez.

The robbery was reported around 5:45 p.m. in the 1100 block of Hacienda Place just north of Santa Monica Boulevard.

Security camera footage shared with NBCLA by the WeHo Times shows at least three burglary suspects hopping out of a vehicle and pointing what appears to be a weapon at Cortez.

The investigation remains active, and no arrests have been reported.

  • San Francisco man robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight in West Hollywood

    [ad_1]

Police are investigating Friday a group of armed robbery suspects responsible for a brazen daylight theft outside a West Hollywood apartment.

The victim, a man visiting from San Francisco, was robbed of his belongings and jewelry, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The robbery was reported around 5:45 p.m. in the 1100 block of Hacienda Place just north of Santa Monica Boulevard.

Security camera footage shared with NBCLA by the WeHo Times shows at least three burglary suspects hopping out of a vehicle and pointing what appears to be a weapon at the victim.

“There were three masked men, all dressed in black and they threw this guy down on the ground,” said Mike Pingel, a WeHo Times reporter who witnessed the robbery.

Among the items stolen were a Rolex watch, a wedding ring and a phone, which the thieves later through out, according to Pingel.

“I can’t even explain the sheer terror. They weren’t even following him. They just stopped, saw him walking and threw him to the ground and stole everything,” said Pingel.

It’s unclear how much the items that were stolen were worth.

No arrests have been made and the robbery is still under investigation.

  • 5SOS Go Full Rockstar Mode for Secret L.A. Show

    [ad_1]

The concert followed the Australian quartet’s announcement of a new forthcoming album

    Credit: Andy DeLuca

As teen rockers, pop-rock band 5 Seconds of Summer never cared for being called a boyband. But just over a decade later — a string of No.1 albums, a slew of chart-topping tracks and solo projects under the belt — Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin are embracing the label.

On Sept. 24, the Aussie group officially reemerged with its first new music since 2022’s 5SOS5. Whispers of a return began the day before when the band’s Instagram was wiped clean, save for a carousel of images that began with “5SOS are breaking up?? Click here for proof.”

Equipped with a new look that lands somewhere between goth-punk and ‘90s boyband extravagance, 5 Seconds of Summer ignited its new album cycle with the release of “Not Ok,” an arena-ready track that puts instrumental showmanship and rockstar bravado front and center. The lead single gives a taste of what’s to come on the rest of the album, Everyone’s a Star!, out on Nov. 14 through Republic Records.

    Credit: Andy DeLuca

With its well-honed boyband powers, 5SOS ignited the fan bat signal and announced a free show in West Hollywood just a few hours before showtime. First come, first served, No RSVP. The girls (and some guys) came running, looping Olive Drive and down Sunset Boulevard with the hopes of being one of the lucky crowd members.

    Credit: Andy DeLuca

Just after 6 p.m., a baby pink limo rolled onto The Sun Rose West Hollywood’s checkered piazza, which had been transformed from valet zone to pop-up concert, complete with a circular hot pink stage emblazoned with a black star. All fans in attendance wore t-shirts (also hot pink and black) that proclaimed “Your Favorite Boy Band.”

    Credit: Andy DeLuca

Hemmings, Clifford, Hood and Irwin hopped out of the limo to stand on top of the stretched vehicle for a moment of glory, taking in the screams and applause before hitting the stage for the live debut of “Not Ok.” Performing through technical issues, the band showed their ever-present sense of humor and encouraged the crowd to chant “Refund! Refund! Refund!” Past the blip, 5SOS powered through “Teeth” from 2020’s Calm to the palpable excitement of fans — Hemmings hardly had to sing the chorus.

    Credit: Andy DeLuca

Much of the concert was dedicated to previewing the new album with more than half of the set dedicated to Everyone’s a Star! Closing with a redo of “Not Ok,” 5SOS also debuted the title track, “Boyband,” “Telephone Busy,” and “No. 1 Obsession.” But as any good boyband knows to do, the group played two other longtime favorites: pop punk breakthrough “She Looks So Perfect” and the infectious “Youngblood.”

After taking a group bow, 5SOS piled back into the limo for an especially stylish exit. Peeling out of The Sun Rose West Hollywood driveway, the vehicle moved out slowly, careful while driving past the dedicated fans that stayed for the concert on the sidewalk, even if only to listen.

  • West Hollywood defends half-staff Pride and trans flags for Charlie Kirk

    [ad_1]

West Hollywood has responded to criticism for flying the Progress Pride flag and transgender flag at half-staff in response to the killing of Charlie Kirk.

The California city, known for its sizable LGBTQ+ population, released a statement Sunday saying that lowering its flags was not an endorsement of the late anti-LGBTQ+ activist, who was assassinated Wednesday at a Utah university, but rather an act of policy that follows the directives of presidential proclamations.

“The City’s action should not be interpreted as an expression of alignment with, or endorsement of, Mr. Kirk’s political views or actions. Rather, the action was undertaken in accordance with the City’s Policy for Recognitions and Memorials, which acknowledges that the City follows the direction of the President in determining when flags in the City are flown at half-staff,” read the statement, according to WeHo Times, a local outlet.

In its statement, the city added that it would revisit this flag policy “in the coming weeks” in order “to ensure that it appropriately reflects the values of the West Hollywood community.”

Kirk had a long history of using his platform as a right-wing influencer to attack the LGBTQ+ community, particularly transgender people. And the city’s move to lower Pride flags in its Matthew Shepard Square sparked sizable backlash when the WeHo Times posted a video of the flags to its Instagram account Saturday.

“This is wild!! I’m all for empathy but this is just ridiculous,” wrote transgender performer Laganja Estranja. “He hated us, raise our flags back up!!” Added Willam, “Why are we as a people in WeHo listening to Trump?” The RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni made headlines last weekend advocating for transgender people at the VMAs in a performance by Sabrina Carpenter.

A sign left near the flags Sunday read, “Shame on West Hollywood for lowering our flags in honor of a racist, transphobic, homophobic, Nazi-loving monster.”

President Trump issued a proclamation Wednesday that ordered flag-lowering on “all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its territories and possessions until sunset, September 14, 2025.”

Notably, the states of New York and New Jersey did not follow the flag directive, drawing the ire of conservative critics.

The act of publicly mourning the late Trump confidant and founder of Turning Point USA, a key group for conservative youth outreach, has emerged as a political litmus test. Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth drew much queer criticism for commenting on Instagram that she “didn’t always agree but appreciated some perspectives” of Kirk and that he must now be in “heaven.” And Stephen King was pressured to apologize for noting on X that Kirk advocating for stoning gay people — even though Kirk indeed stated that stoning gays was “‘God’s perfect law.”

Musical icon Stevie Wonder took the stage at The Sun Rose on the Sunset Strip Friday night to help his friend, producer Adam Blackstone, celebrate an album release with an intimate performance after he offered up some words of wisdom.

“Clearly we are in a spiritual war,” Wonder told the crowd. “I celebrate the blessing, the spirit, of God…God is a spirit of the blessing of goodness. I say it with love in my heart…Using love against the weapon of hate, at the end of the day that is the key.”

And then he launched into a rendition of his hit song “Higher Ground,” a song the 75-year-old singer wrote for his 1973 album “Innervisions,” to a jubilant crowd. Wonder was in attendance to celebrate the release of “Humble Magic,” the second album for the Sun Rose musical director Blackstone, who has worked with a slew of talent included Rihanna, Jill Scott, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, Maroon 5, Eminem, Janet Jackson and was the magic behind the Super Bowl LIV Halftime show with Shakira and J-Lo.

Blackstone is now the creative director for the sexy live performance space on the first floor of The Sun Rose hotel, a former Pendry property that flipped to the Sun Rose last month. The club had been the site for the House of Blues, and part of the deal for developers on the site is a requirement to maintain a live music venue. The Sun Rose with Blackstone – a wildly talented, multi-instrumentalist – is a welcome addition to Sunset Boulevard.

  • 40th anniversary AIDS Walk happening this weekend in West Hollywood

40th anniversary AIDS Walk happening this weekend in West Hollywood

    [ad_1]

Four months after seeking asylum in the U.S., Fernando Hermida began coughing and feeling tired. He thought it was a cold. Then sores appeared in his groin and he would soak his bed with sweat. He took a test.

On New Year’s Day 2022, at age 31, Hermida learned he had HIV.

“I thought I was going to die,” he said, recalling how a chill washed over him as he reviewed his results. He struggled to navigate a new, convoluted health care system. Through an HIV organization he found online, he received a list of medical providers to call in D.C., where he was at the time, but they didn’t return his calls for weeks. Hermida, who speaks only Spanish, didn’t know where to turn.

By the time of Hermida’s diagnosis, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services was about three years into a federal initiative to end the nation’s HIV epidemic by pumping hundreds of millions of dollars annually into certain states, counties, and U.S. territories with the highest infection rates. The goal was to reach the estimated 1.2 million people living with HIV, including some who don’t know they have the disease.

Overall, estimated new HIV infection rates declined 23 percent from 2012 to 2022. But a KFF Health News-Associated Press analysis found the rate has not fallen for Latinos as much as it has for other racial and ethnic groups.

While African Americans continue to have the highest HIV rates in the U.S. overall, Latinos made up the largest share of new HIV diagnoses and infections among gay and bisexual men in 2022, per the most recent data available, compared with other racial and ethnic groups. Latinos, who make up about 19 percent of the U.S. population, accounted for about 33 percent of new HIV infections, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The analysis found Latinos are experiencing a disproportionate number of new infections and diagnoses across the U.S., with diagnosis rates highest in the Southeast. Public health officials in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and Shelby County, Tennessee, where data shows diagnosis rates have gone up among Latinos, told KFF Health News and the AP that they either don’t have specific plans to address HIV in this population or that plans are still in the works. Even in well-resourced places like San Francisco, HIV diagnosis rates grew among Latinos in the last few years while falling among other racial and ethnic groups despite the county’s goals to reduce infections among Latinos.

“HIV disparities are not inevitable,” Robyn Neblett Fanfair, director of the CDC’s Division of HIV Prevention, said in a statement. She noted the systemic, cultural, and economic inequities — such as racism, language differences, and medical mistrust.

And though the CDC provides some funds for minority groups, Latino health policy advocates want HHS to declare a public health emergency in hopes of directing more money to Latino communities, saying current efforts aren’t enough.

“Our invisibility is no longer tolerable,” said Vincent Guilamo-Ramos, co-chair of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS.

    Lost without an interpreter

Hermida suspects he contracted the virus while he was in an open relationship with a male partner before he came to the U.S. In late January 2022, months after his symptoms started, he went to a clinic in New York City that a friend had helped him find to finally get treatment for HIV.

Too sick to care for himself alone, Hermida eventually moved to Charlotte to be closer to family and in hopes of receiving more consistent health care. He enrolled in an Amity Medical Group clinic that receives funding from the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, a federal safety-net plan that serves over half of those in the nation diagnosed with HIV, regardless of their citizenship status.

His HIV became undetectable after he was connected with case managers. But over time, communication with the clinic grew less frequent, he said, and he didn’t get regular interpretation help during visits with his English-speaking doctor. An Amity Medical Group representative confirmed Hermida was a client but didn’t answer questions about his experience at the clinic.

Hermida said he had a hard time filling out paperwork to stay enrolled in the Ryan White program, and when his eligibility expired in September 2023, he couldn’t get his medication.

He left the clinic and enrolled in a health plan through the Affordable Care Act marketplace. But Hermida didn’t realize the insurer required him to pay for a share of his HIV treatment.

In January, the Lyft driver received a $1,275 bill for his antiretroviral — the equivalent of 120 rides, he said. He paid the bill with a coupon he found online. In April, he got a second bill he couldn’t afford.

For two weeks, he stopped taking the medication that keeps the virus undetectable and intransmissible.

“Estoy que colapso,” he said. I’m falling apart. “Tengo que vivir para pagar la medicación.” I have to live to pay for my medication.

One way to prevent HIV is preexposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, which is regularly taken to reduce the risk of getting HIV through sex or intravenous drug use. It was approved by the federal government in 2012 but the uptake has not been even across racial and ethnic groups: CDC data show much lower rates of PrEP coverage among Latinos than among white Americans.

Epidemiologists say high PrEP use and consistent access to treatment are necessary to build community-level resistance.

Carlos Saldana, an infectious disease specialist and former medical adviser for Georgia’s health department, helped identify five clusters of rapid HIV transmission involving about 40 gay Latinos and men who have sex with men from February 2021 to June 2022. Many people in the cluster told researchers they had not taken PrEP and struggled to understand the health care system.

They experienced other barriers, too, Saldana said, including lack of transportation and fear of deportation if they sought treatment.

Latino health policy advocates want the federal government to redistribute funding for HIV prevention, including testing and access to PrEP. Of the nearly $30 billion in federal money that went toward things like HIV health care services, treatment, and prevention in 2022, only 4% went to prevention, according to a KFF analysis.

They suggest more money could help reach Latino communities through efforts like faith-based outreach at churches, testing at clubs on Latin nights, and training bilingual HIV testers.

    Latino rates going up

Congress has appropriated $2.3 billion over five years to the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative, and jurisdictions that get the money are to invest 25 percent of it in community-based organizations. But the initiative lacks requirements to target any particular groups, including Latinos, leaving it up to the cities, counties, and states to come up with specific strategies.

In 34 of the 57 areas getting the money, cases are going the wrong way: Diagnosis rates among Latinos increased from 2019 to 2022 while declining for other racial and ethnic groups, the KFF Health News-AP analysis found.

Starting Aug. 1, state and local health departments will have to provide annual spending reports on funding in places that account for 30 percent or more of HIV diagnoses, the CDC said. Previously, it had been required for only a small number of states.

In some states and counties, initiative funding has not been enough to cover the needs of Latinos.

South Carolina, which saw rates nearly double for Latinos from 2012-2022, hasn’t expanded HIV mobile testing in rural areas, where the need is high among Latinos, said Tony Price, HIV program manager in the state health department. South Carolina can pay for only four community health workers focused on HIV outreach — and not all of them are bilingual.

In Shelby County, Tennessee, home to Memphis, the Latino HIV diagnosis rate rose 86 percent from 2012 to 2022. The health department said it got $2 million in initiative funding in 2023 and while the county plan acknowledges that Latinos are a target group, department director Michelle Taylor said: “There are no specific campaigns just among Latino people.”

Up to now, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, didn’t include specific targets to address HIV in the Latino population — where rates of new diagnoses more than doubled in a decade but fell slightly among other racial and ethnic groups. The health department has used funding for bilingual marketing campaigns and awareness about PrEP.

    Moving for medicine

When it was time to pack up and move to Hermida’s third city in two years, his fiancé, who is taking PrEP, suggested seeking care in Orlando, Fla.

The couple, who were friends in high school in Venezuela, had some family and friends in Florida, and they had heard about Pineapple Healthcare, a nonprofit primary care clinic dedicated to supporting Latinos living with HIV.

The clinic is housed in a medical office south of downtown Orlando. Inside, the mostly Latino staff is dressed in pineapple-print turquoise shirts, and Spanish, not English, is most commonly heard in appointment rooms and hallways.

“At the core of it, if the organization is not led by and for people of color, then we’re just an afterthought,” said Andres Acosta Ardila, the community outreach director at Pineapple Healthcare, who was diagnosed with HIV in 2013.

“¿Te mudaste reciente, ya por fin?” asked nurse practitioner Eliza Otero. Did you finally move? She started treating Hermida while he still lived in Charlotte. “Hace un mes que no nos vemos.” It’s been a month since we last saw each other.

They still need to work on lowering his cholesterol and blood pressure, she told him. Though his viral load remains high, Otero said it should improve with regular, consistent care.

Pineapple Healthcare, which doesn’t receive initiative money, offers full-scope primary care to mostly Latino males. Hermida gets his HIV medication at no cost there because the clinic is part of a federal drug discount program.

The clinic is in many ways an oasis. The new diagnosis rate for Latinos in Orange County, Florida, which includes Orlando, rose by about a third from 2012 through 2022, while dropping by a third for others. Florida has the third-largest Latino population in the U.S., and had the seventh-highest rate of new HIV diagnoses among Latinos in the nation in 2022.

Hermida, whose asylum case is pending, never imagined getting medication would be so difficult, he said during the 500-mile drive from North Carolina to Florida. After hotel rooms, jobs lost, and family goodbyes, he is hopeful his search for consistent HIV treatment — which has come to define his life the past two years — can finally come to an end.

“Soy un nómada a la fuerza, pero bueno, como me comenta mi prometido y mis familiares, yo tengo que estar donde me den buenos servicios médicos,” he said. I’m forced to be a nomad, but like my family and my fiancé say, I have to be where I can get good medical services.

That’s the priority, he said. “Esa es la prioridad ahora.”

KFF Health News and The Associated Press analyzed data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the number of new HIV diagnoses and infections among Americans ages 13 and older at the local, state, and national levels. This story primarily uses incidence rate data — estimates of new infections — at the national level and diagnosis rate data at the state and county level.

  • California Assembly passes bill allowing Amsterdam-style cannabis cafes

California Assembly passes bill allowing Amsterdam-style cannabis cafes

    [ad_1]

A bill that would allow Amsterdam-style cannabis cafes in California passed the state Assembly Monday afternoon on a 49-4 vote and is headed to the Senate. But even if the Legislature’s upper chamber approves AB 1775, legalization remains far from a sure thing.

Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a prior iteration of the bill in October, citing the state’s long-standing smoke-free workplace protections.

The bill would authorize local jurisdictions to allow licensed cannabis retailers to prepare and sell non-cannabis food and nonalcoholic beverages. The bill would also allow the cafes to host live music and other performances.

Under current state law, consumers can consume cannabis at a dispensary, but dispensaries can’t legally sell non-cannabis products like coffee and food, as is legal in Amsterdam.

California’s symbolic position at the apex of weed culture has long been rivaled by the Dutch capital, where cannabis cafes have been legal since the 1970s.

Assemblymember Matt Haney (D-San Francisco), who introduced the legislation, has framed it as a matter of fairness. He argues that the cafes would level the playing field for the state’s highly taxed and regulated legal weed industry, allowing legitimate businesses to compete with black-market sellers who don’t operate under the same constraints.

“This is a bill that supports our legal small businesses that just want to diversify their businesses and do the right thing,” Haney said Monday on the Assembly floor. “The illicit illegal market is continuing to grow and thrive, while our legal cannabis market is struggling.”

Haney cited the governor’s prior veto, saying he had been working to address Newsom’s concerns through amendments to the bill. The new version would prohibit cannabis smoking or vaping in “back of house” of lounges, where food is being prepared or stored, creating separation between where people are consuming cannabis and other work areas.

Rather than taking a blunt statewide approach, the bill would put the decision to allow cannabis cafes in the hands of local jurisdictions. Should a jurisdiction decide to greenlight the lounges, it would have to hash out its own permitting process and regulations.

West Hollywood put a licensing system in place several years ago, and a handful of cannabis lounges operate within the city’s 1.89 square miles. The West Hollywood businesses operate with workarounds that separate the food businesses, The Times has previously reported.

No such licensing system exists in the city of Los Angeles.

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, the American Heart Assn. and the American Lung Assn. have all opposed the bill, raising concerns about the health effects of secondhand marijuana smoke. They argue that the bill would undo hard-fought workplace protections “by re-creating the harmful work environments of the past.”

Marijuana advocacy group Americans for Safe Access has argued that patrons and employees would face no health risks because of the highly regulated nature of such establishments.

A Newsom spokesperson declined to comment on pending legislation.

  • Goodbye to Sweet Lady Jane and the famous triple berry cake

Goodbye to Sweet Lady Jane and the famous triple berry cake

    [ad_1]

For the past three decades, it seemed there was only one cake worth having at your graduation, birthday, bridal shower or wedding. The cake sitting on top of the pedestal in the middle of the celebration table, the one being shoved into newlyweds’ faces and ushered out in neat slices to waiting partygoers, was the triple berry cake from Sweet Lady Jane.

The bakery, which had six locations in Los Angeles — West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Encino, Calabasas and San Fernando — closed all of its bakeries on Sunday.

The company announced the closures in a statement posted to social media.

“After 35 years we are closing our doors,” read the statement. “Our last day of business was December 31, 2023.”

The shop celebrated its 35th anniversary in June, recently remodeled multiple stores and had plans to open new shops in Larchmont and Marina del Rey.

“We did not come to this decision lightly nor quickly,” read the statement. “While the support and loyalty of our customers has been strong, sales are not enough to continue doing business in the state of California, allowing us to service our lease obligations and pay our treasured employees a living wage without passing those costs directly on to you.”

A representative for Sweet Lady Jane did not immediately respond to The Times’ request for comment.

“This business is brutal,” Erin McKenna’s Bakery commented on the Instagram post about the sudden closure. The vegan and gluten-free bakery has a location on Larchmont Boulevard in Windsor Square as well as bakeries in Florida and New York City. “I am so, so sorry. I know this wasn’t easy.“

The news comes at a time fraught with uncertainty for the Los Angeles restaurant industry, with dozens of notable closures announced in 2023.

Founder Jane Lockhart opened the first Sweet Lady Jane bakery on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood in 1988. The triple berry cake wasn’t on Lockhart’s opening menu, but it was a hit from the moment she introduced it a few months later. The cake accounted for more than half of the bakery’s sales.

It was a simple take on a strawberry shortcake, with rich yellow butter cake layered with whipped cream and fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. The whipped cream was improbably light and just a tad sweet. Each fruit had its own devoted layer so that when you sliced into the cake, you could easily pick out your favorite.

It was instantly recognizable at parties. The tall, pristine white cake was neatly piped with green buttercream leaves along the sides and decorated with fresh fruit on top.

I’ve probably eaten at least a hundred slices over the years. Growing up in Los Angeles, I watched as the cake became a status symbol of sorts. In addition to the right handbag, car and social circle, this was the cake you needed at your party. At the time of closing, a 9-inch cake was $100.

People made sure the cake was included in photographs from any party. They nodded approvingly when it was brought to the table.

Fans of the bakery, and the triple berry cake in particular, flooded the comments on the Instagram post announcing the closure.

“The berry cake is a part of my childhood and my memories forever,” wrote Lauren Ireland. “My own wedding, friend’s weddings, celebratory days and when you just wanted to make someone’s day happier.”

“This is truly an end of an era,” wrote Scotty Cunha.

“Oh no, this is so sad. Thank you for all the memories. The triple berry cake will live on in legend…,” wrote food writer Esther Tseng.

Many copycats have sprung up over the years, including the berry chantilly cake from Whole Foods, which features a vanilla cake with chantilly icing and berries. But there’s only one triple berry.

What will be the next “it” cake for Los Angeles? I suggest the chocolate with salted caramel from République, the Blum’s Coffee Crunch cake from Valerie Confections or any of Hannah Ziskin’s cakes at Quarter Sheets.

Are Rihanna & A$AP Rocky Spending Time Apart Amid His Criminal Case?? LOOK! – Perez Hilton

    [ad_1]

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky are doing their own thing in the wake of his criminal court case.

On Thursday, the Lift Me Up singer was spotted out and about in West Hollywood in gorgeous new blonde locks, a gray hoodie, gray jeans with a unique design, and a camel overcoat. What’s inneresting is that Rocky was also spotted in WeHo — but not in the same area as RiRi.

Rihanna was seen at the San Vicente Bungalows with a group of friends, while the Pharsyde rapper was in a different part of town in a denim outfit with his own friends.

The sightings came just one day after Rocky appeared in court for assault charges, according to DailyMail.com. He’s facing two felony counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm stemming from a November 2021 shooting where he allegedly fired at least four shots at fellow A$AP Mob member Terell Ephron. He could face up to eight years in jail if convicted. The duo both appeared to maintain straight faces throughout their sightings, which would make sense just one day after such a stressful court appearance…

Then, on Saturday, the parents were spotted out and about separately AGAIN! Rih dined at Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica while Rocky, born Rakim Mayers, was apparently leaving a recording session in WeHo, according to TMZ. The rapper flashed a grin at one point as he sported an all black ‘fit, but the Love on the Brain singer maintained her serious demeanor from Thursday night.

And you can also see more of the photos from the end of last week’s separate appearances HERE.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KABC) — A smash-and-grab robbery at a marijuana dispensary in West Hollywood happened early Tuesday morning.

The store’s manager said about 12 people broke in to Urbn Leaf on Sunset Boulevard around 5 a.m.

The owners say one of the burglars smashed through the windows, and then the rest followed, taking most of the product on the store floor.

“I was pretty shocked. I’m like ‘really?’ I can’t believe this actually happened on Sunset,” said Sol Yamani, a partner at the store.

The latest crime came just hours after the city of West Hollywood voted to add four new positions to the Sheriff’s Department to patrol the area.

Less than two weeks ago, four people were arrested in connection with a brazen armed robbery close to a nearby restaurant.

Ticketmaster To Require Purchase Of Round-Trip Concert Tickets For Exiting Venue After Show

    [ad_1]

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA—Updating the company’s terms of service, live-entertainment giant Ticketmaster announced Wednesday that it would soon be requiring customers to purchase round-trip tickets to cover the cost of both entering and exiting a concert venue. “Round-trip tickets will only be required in cases where the attendee wishes not only to be admitted to a show, but also to be permitted to leave once the show is over,” said Ticketmaster spokesperson Brenna Winfield, adding that there would be a limited number of tickets available for any given departure time, so customers who wanted to be among the first to leave a concert should expect to pay a higher fee. “Ticketmaster customers worried about the additional costs associated with exiting a venue should know that rates drop significantly on slower days, so if they attend an event on, say, a busy Saturday night, they can typically save up to 15% by extending their stay in the completely dark, empty arena until Tuesday or Wednesday. Another option is to leave the show before it ends, but please be aware we charge a $200 ticket-change fee for concertgoers who decide they want to go home early because the band sucks.” At press time, several hundred Taylor Swift fans had reportedly been trampled to death in Arizona after Ticketmaster’s demand-based pricing system pushed the cost of exiting State Farm Stadium to more than $10,000.
