  • Walmart developer seeks Lake Norman town’s approval for a nearby restaurant

The developer of a Walmart Neighborhood Market in rapidly growing east Mooresville wants to add a restaurant and a gas station/convenience store nearby.

Iredell Avenue Residential Development LLC will seek a rezoning from the Mooresville Board of Commissioners on Monday for a Wendy’s and a 7-Eleven in its Harris Crossing development on Coddle Creek Highway (N.C. 3) at Harris Crossing Boulevard, Mooresville Planning & Community Development documents show.

At a neighborhood meeting held by the developer in May, residents raised concerns about traffic, safety, noise and potential pollution, according to the town documents.

The developer said existing trees, a proposed berm and an eight-foot-tall wall with landscaping on both sides would create sound and visual barriers along the southern end of the nearly five-acre property.

A proposed 50-foot-wide buffer of trees and other vegetation “would deter the possibilities of vagrants trying to walk through and get to the existing backyards of the adjacent homes along the east side of the property,” according to town planning documents.

On May 27, the Mooresville Planning Board sided with residents in recommending the rezoning be denied by the town board.

The Mooresville Board of Commissioners will consider the rezoning at 6 p.m. Monday at Town Hall, 413 N. Main St.

  • Wendy’s set to close hundreds of US restaurants: what we know

Fast food chain Wendy’s is set to close hundreds of restaurants around the country.

CNN are reporting that in a call on Friday, Interim CEO Ken Cook told analysts a “mid single-digit percentage” of approximately 6,000 US locations could close, which amounts to between 200 and 350 restaurants.

Cook said the closures will target “underperforming” locations in an effort to “boost sales and profitability.”

“These actions will strengthen the system and enable franchisees to invest more capital and resources in their remaining restaurants,” Cook said. “Closures of underperforming units are expected to boost sales and profitability at nearby locations.”

The closures will begin this year and continue through 2026. Cook did not reveal specific locations that would be targeted.

    Wendy’s closed 140 restaurants nationwide in 2024.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

  • Wendy’s is closing hundreds of restaurants

New York (CNN) — Wendy’s is set to close hundreds of locations across the United States as part of its turnaround plan.

Interim CEO Ken Cook announced Friday that a “mid single-digit percentage” of Wendy’s approximately 6,000 US locations could close, which would amount to around 200 to 350 restaurants.

Affected locations are those that are “consistently underperforming” and dragging down the chain’s overall performance, Cook told analysts. The closures will begin this year and continue through 2026.

“These actions will strengthen the system and enable franchisees to invest more capital and resources in their remaining restaurants,” he said. “Closures of underperforming units are expected to boost sales and profitability at nearby locations.”

A specific list of locations wasn’t announced.

This string of closures comes a year after Wendy’s announced the shuttering of 140 locations, citing similar underperformance issues.

Wendy’s could use a jolt after reporting another downbeat quarter. US same-store sales declined 4.7%, while rivals McDonald’s, Burger King and Shake Shack all posted positive earnings as customers gravitated toward their deals and marketing efforts.

Despite the decline, Cook revealed that it’s seeing positive results from its newly released chicken tenders, called “Tendys.” Demand was so strong that some restaurants sold out even before advertising began.

“We’re looking forward to continuing that momentum, and this is an encouraging first step as we look to reestablish our leadership position in chicken,” he said.

  • Duo accused of swiping $2K in clothes from Mass. TJ Maxx busted in drive-thru of nearby Wendy’s

Two women accused of swiping thousands of dollars in merchandise from a TJ Maxx in Massachusetts were busted as they tried to order food in the drive-thru line of a nearby Wendy’s.

Dominque Marion, 38, of Worcester, and 24-year-old Tynaja Williams, of New Haven, Connecticut, are both facing a charge of larceny over $1,200 and conspiracy in connection with a shoplifting incident in August, the Auburn Police Department announced Friday.

Tynaja Williams — Auburn Police Department

Officers responding to a report of a robbery at the TJ Maxx on Southbridge Street in Auburn on the afternoon of Aug. 13 spoke with a worker who said the suspects fled the store after stuffing $2,000 worth of clothes into a black Ford Edge with Connecticut plates, police said.

The suspects, later identified as Marion and Williams, didn’t make it far before they were caught.

“Apparently satisfied with their five-finger discount, the two decided to celebrate with a pit stop at Wendy’s because nothing says perfect getaway plan like sitting in a drive-thru line for fast food, directly across the street from the store you just stole from,” the police department wrote in a Facebook post.

Auburn Sgt. Gregg Wildman, who his department says “is no stranger to the Wendy’s drive-thru,” spotted the duo and took them into custody.

“If Wendy’s had a frequent flyer program, he’d already have a lifetime platinum status,” police said of Wildman. “The two women traded in their combo meals for a pair of handcuffs.”

Other responding officers spotted the stolen TJ Maxx merchandise in their vehicle, while also recovering a “large amount of additional items believed stolen from other area stores,” according to police.

Marion and Williams could face charges in neighboring jurisdictions.

The department ended its Facebook with a simple message, “Moral of the story: Felonies do not come with a side of fries.”

  • Wendy’s Closing 140 More Restaurants – KXL

    Wendy’s Closing 140 More Restaurants – KXL

(Associated Press) – Wendy’s plans to close 140 U.S. restaurants before the end of this year on top of the 100 it said it would close in May.

But the company says those closures will be offset by new restaurant openings.

Wendy’s plans to open between 250 and 300 restaurants this year.

Wendy’s President and CEO Kirk Tanner said in a conference call Thursday that the restaurants that are closing are underperforming compared to others, and many are outdated.

Wendy’s didn’t provide a list of restaurants that will be closed, but Tanner said they’re all over the U.S.

Krispy Kreme doughnuts are coming to McDonald’s

New York (CNN) — McDonald’s customers can soon pair Krispy Kreme doughnuts with their morning McCafe, in a new food partnership that seeks to expand both brands but that could wind up weakening them instead.

Three types of Krispy Kreme doughnuts — original glazed, chocolate iced with sprinkles and chocolate iced “kreme” filled — will go on sale at McDonald’s restaurants starting later this year, the companies told CNN on Monday.

Krispy Kreme shares jumped roughly 18% on Tuesday morning. McDonald’s shares lost 0.2%.

Wendy’s Says It Has No Plans To Raise Prices During Busiest Times At Its Restaurants – KXL

(Associated Press) – Wendy’s says that it has no plans to increase prices during the busiest times at its restaurants.

The burger chain clarified its stance on how it will approach pricing after various media reports said that the company was looking to test having the prices of its menu items fluctuate throughout the day based on demand.

Wendy’s said that its digital menu boards “could allow us to change the menu offerings at different times of day and offer discounts and value offers to our customers more easily, particularly in the slower times of day.”

Wendy’s says that it has no plans to increase prices during the busiest times at its restaurants.

The burger chain clarified its stance on how it will approach pricing after various media reports said that the company was looking to test having the prices of its menu items fluctuate throughout the day based on demand.

“Wendy’s will not implement surge pricing, which is the practice of raising prices when demand is highest. We didn’t use that phrase, nor do we plan to implement that practice,” the company said late Tuesday in a prepared statement.

Wendy’s Co. plans to invest about $20 million to launch digital menu boards at all of its U.S. company-run restaurants by the end of 2025. It also plans to invest approximately $10 million over the next two years to support digital menu enhancements globally.

Wendy’s said that its digital menu boards “could allow us to change the menu offerings at different times of day and offer discounts and value offers to our customers more easily, particularly in the slower times of day.”

  • Judge Dismisses Wendy’s, McDonald’s Burger Size Lawsuit | Entrepreneur

Judge Dismisses Wendy’s, McDonald’s Burger Size Lawsuit | Entrepreneur

A lawsuit against Wendy’s and McDonald’s, alleging that the companies had exaggerated the size of their burgers in advertisements, has been officially dismissed by a federal judge on Wednesday, The New York Times reported.

The plaintiff, Justin Chimienti of New York, had initiated the lawsuit in 2022, claiming that he purchased burgers at Wendy’s and McDonald’s locations, but they were significantly smaller than depicted in the ads, and he was “financially damaged as a result.”

Judge Hector Gonzalez of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York ruled that there was no evidence to suggest that the fast-food chains had served smaller burgers than what they advertised or that they had deceived their customers as the lawsuit contended.

In the 19-page ruling, the judge also expressed doubts about whether Chimienti had actually seen the specific ads for the fast food items which he had cited as examples in his complaint.

Related: Jack in the Box Employee Shoots at Customer Over Alleged Missing Curly Fries, Family Files Lawsuit

Chimienti argued that misleading advertising harmed customers by providing them with food of lower value than what was promised.

While the monetary damages Chimienti sought in the lawsuit are unspecified, he aimed to “fully compensate” individuals who felt “deceived” after purchasing an “overstated menu item.”

Chimienti’s complaint was one of several recent lawsuits targeting fast-food companies for alleged misrepresentation of their products in advertisements.

In August, a judge in the Southern District of Florida denied Burger King’s plea to dismiss a lawsuit originally filed in 2022, wherein plaintiffs are arguing that the chain engages in “unfair” and “deceptive” practices in relation to its Whopper size.

Similarly, an ongoing lawsuit against Taco Bell alleges that the company’s Crunchwraps and Mexican pizzas are advertised as containing “at least double” the filling they actually contain, seeking damages of at least $5 million.

  • Wendy’s Giving Away Free Food While Mercury Is in Retrograde | Entrepreneur

Wendy’s Giving Away Free Food While Mercury Is in Retrograde | Entrepreneur

Are you feeling a little dazed and confused? Astrologists believe this is because Mercury will soon be in retrograde.

Wendy’s believes it has a cure.

The fast food chain announced it would soon introduce its “Mercury Menu,” offering deals such as free Crispy Chicken Sandwiches, free 6-piece Crispy or Spicy Chicken Nuggets, and free hot & spicy fries with any purchase from April 20 to May 14, right when Mercury is in retrograde.

The deal is available exclusively through mobile ordering via the brand’s app. Here are the details:

    • BOGO $1 Premium Sandwich with any purchase from Friday, April 21 through Sunday, April 23.
    • Free Crispy Chicken Sandwich with any purchase from Monday, April 24 through Sunday, April 30.
    • Free 6-piece Crispy or Spicy Chicken Nuggets with any purchase from Monday, May 1 through Sunday, May 7.
    • Free Any Size Hot & Crispy Fry when you make any purchase between Monday, May 8 and Sunday, May 14.

    What is Mercury retrograde?

The phrase Mercury is in retrograde refers to a phenomenon where the planet Mercury appears to move backward in its orbit around the sun. The movement happens several times a year. Astrologists believe Mercury retrograde can cause people to feel disoriented and confused.

“When Mercury is moving forward, in its natural motion, communications go generally easily. Though when Mercury goes out of its natural orbit, say in retrograde, there tend to be all sorts of wires crossed and miscommunications,” astrologer Rebecca Gordon told CBS News.

But according to scientists at NASA, Mercury in retrograde is “not real in that the planet does not physically start moving backward in its orbit. It just appears to do so because of the relative positions of the planet and Earth and how they are moving around the Sun.”

Still, this hasn’t stopped Wendy’s from capitalizing on a good marketing opportunity. According to a 2022 YouGov poll, one in four Americans believes in Astrology.
