  • Everyone’s Favorite Webcomic Is Finally Headed to TV

    [ad_1]

Ancient mythology has been having a moment these past few years. The Odyssey is easily a lot of people’s most-anticipated movie of 2026. Hadestown continues to shatter audience’s hearts on Broadway. Men are, probably, still thinking about the Roman Empire a lot.

In and amongst all of that has been Lore Olympus, Rachel Smythe’s wildly successful Webtoon series retelling the relationship between Persephone and Hades in a modern context. After winning a slew of awards and being viewed millions of times during its tenure from 2017 through 2024, the series is finally getting adapted into a new medium.

On Tuesday, it was officially announced that a Lore Olympus animated series is moving forward at Prime Video. The project has been in the works at the streamer for over half a decade, first being put into development in 2019. It is being brought to life by Webtoon Productions and The Jim Henson Company, and is being showrun by Julia Cooperman (The Winchesters, Pantheon).

“I am beyond thrilled to partner with Prime Video, The Jim Henson Company, and Webtoon on the series adaptation of Rachel Smythe’s wildly popular web comic, Lore Olympus,” Cooperman said in a statement. “My fascination with Greek mythology has spanned grade-school libraries and college seminars. Reading Lore Olympus, I was reminded of the enduring power of these tales, which echo through so much of our modern-day storytelling. We can’t wait to share this frisky, soulful, and timely reimagining of Persephone and Hades’ story with new audiences and longtime readers alike.”

Lore Olympus redefined what mythology can look and feel like for a new generation, and we’re thrilled to bring this beloved story to our global Prime Video audience,” echoed Melissa Wolfe, head of animation for Amazon MGM Studios. “Julia’s vision, combined with Rachel Smythe’s iconic world and our extraordinary collaborators at Webtoon Productions and The Jim Henson Company, makes this an exciting addition to Prime Video’s growing animation slate.”

  • Disney and Webtoon’s Partnership Is Leading to a Massive New Comics App

    [ad_1]

Last month, Webtoon announced a major new deal with Disney to bring a litany of original licensed stories and past comics from across Marvel’s library to the scrolling format that has made Webtoon a significant force in the comics space. Today, however, the two companies confirmed that those plans are actually much, much bigger.

Today Webtoon Entertainment confirmed that Disney would be acquiring a 2% equity interest in the company as part of a non-binding term sheet that will also see the two companies develop a brand new digital comics platform that will be home to “current comic book runs and include decades of past comics from across Disney’s portfolio, including Marvel, Star Wars, 20th Century Studios, and more,” according to a press release.

The new, currently unnamed platform will host over 35,000 comics and is framed in the announcement as “an expansion upon Marvel Unlimited.” It’s currently unclear whether or not the new platform, which will be operated by Webtoon, will be set up to replace Marvel Unlimited, the publisher’s digital comics platform and subscription service that first launched in 2007. That said, further information provided by the companies says that the new platform will “provide decades of iconic comics for current Marvel Unlimited subscribers and bring in even more fans to experience storytelling from across the Disney portfolio along with a selection of Webtoon Original stories,” suggesting that the Unlimited subscription will continue to exist in some capacity alongside the new platform.

Subscribers to Disney+ will also be able to read a curated selection of comics in the new app as part of the streaming service’s perks program, and the new app is described as including “a mix of vertical and traditional formats” across its library of archived comics, current runs, and original content made by Disney and Webtoon, similar to how Marvel Unlimited currently includes scrolling-format exclusive series as part of its Infinity Comics line as well as standard digital comic formats. The new platform will also feature select translations of material for Korean and Japanese audiences.

The news comes in the wake of last August’s announcement that Webtoon will bring a selection of recent Marvel Comics output to its own service in the next few years, including the latest volume of Amazing Spider-Man, the 2015 revival of Marvel’s Star Wars ongoing, Jonathan Hickman’s 2012 Avengers run, and the 2021 Alien series, alongside a new adaptation of the 2016 Liz Braswell novel, As Old As Time: A Twisted Tale.

“With a new platform that will combine our product and technical expertise with Disney’s full comic catalog, we’re giving new and longtime fans all over the world a new way to discover these legendary characters and stories,” Junkoo Kim, Webtoon Entertainment’s CEO, said in a provided statement. “Disney’s extraordinary storytelling legacy is second to none, and we’re honored to work with them to build the future of digital comics. This is a powerful next step for our growing global business, and a strong foundation for even greater collaboration with Disney in the years ahead.”

The news of Disney and Webtoon’s partnership comes at an interesting time for digital comics, as the industry has seen a collapse into siloed, publisher-specific services in the wake of Amazon’s disastrous handling of Comixology, leading to the marketplace’s shuttering and folding into the retailer’s Kindle service in 2023. The union between one of the biggest studios in the world and one of the biggest digital comics platforms around will certainly raise some eyebrows.

  • Unpacking the Eventful Ending of ‘Sweet Home’ Season 3

Unpacking the Eventful Ending of ‘Sweet Home’ Season 3

    [ad_1]

Sweet Home season three had a bittersweet ending. In the past few seasons, some characters have transformed into neohumans, and many more have perished in the name of humanity.

Every sacrifice up to the last episode had been worth it because neohumans and regular survivors had found a way to coexist in peace. Although things will never be the same, society can at least start rebuilding itself. Sweet Home won’t be returning for another season, but its last episode left no stone unturned.

    The Final Stage of Monsterization

The third season of Sweet Home was somewhat confusing to follow because neohumans were introduced later in the drama compared to the webtoon. There is still a big difference between neohumans and special infectees. Neohumans are essentially the final stage of human evolution.

As seen with Eun-hyeok (Lee Do-hyun), neohumans are strong, hyper-intelligent, and immortal. They’re basically Twilight vampires that don’t sparkle under the sun. This means that those who’ve become monsters might hopefully evolve into neohumans one day.

    So Many Heartbreaking Deaths

    There are spoilers up ahead!

Sang-won’s daughter, who could turn people into monsters, was killed by Eun-hyeok (Lee Do-hyun). Yi-su (Kim Si-ah) had been controlled by Sang-won and was forced to turn monsters against Hyun-su (Song Kang) and Eun-hyeok. There was no other choice but to eliminate Yi-su so that the pair could go after Sang-won.

Sang-wook (Lee Jin-uk) has been a fan favorite character, and his last act has broken many hearts. Hyun-su (Song Kang) and Eun-hyeok (Lee Do-hyun) have been fighting to put a stop to Sang-won. But after his last body was burned by Hyun-su, Sang-won escaped and transferred himself into Sang-wook’s body.

In a shocking turn of events, it turns out that Sang-wook’s body still had some consciousness. Sang-wook took control of his body and crawled into the fire. It was necessary, but that doesn’t make the event less painful to watch.

    What Happened to Eun-yu?

Eun-yu (Go Min-si) became a neohuman. All she’s ever wanted was to be reunited with her brother, Eun-hyeok. But after becoming a neohuman himself, Eun-hyeok has lost his ability to feel emotions. There have been many tragedies in Sweet Home, but Eun-yu and Eun-hyeok were spared.

The two reunited with Hyun-su on top of the Green Home, and Eun-hyeok was shown smiling in the end.

  • Exclusive: Beloved Webtoon ‘Rigsby WI’ Coming to Print From Iron Circus | The Mary Sue

Exclusive: Beloved Webtoon ‘Rigsby WI’ Coming to Print From Iron Circus | The Mary Sue

    [ad_1]

Iron Circus Comics is bringing another beloved Webtoon series to print with its latest BackerKit campaign, and The Mary Sue can exclusively reveal the details. On Monday, the publisher released the pre-launch page for Rigsby WI, Volume 1: Foothold by cartoonist S.E. Case. The slice-of-life drama series has garnered more than 5 thousand views on Webtoon and an average 10-star rating since Case began cross-posting from the comic’s original site in 2023. Rigsby WI is currently on Volume 4 and has been going since 2019.

Rigsby WI follows a group of misfit teenagers named Jeordie, Anna, Erik, and Beth as they try to navigate small-town life in a scenic but unfriendly northern Wisconsin town during the early aughts. The series explores the intersections of race, sexuality, and poverty through the lens of raw teenage feelings and ever-evolving, complex relationships between friends, family members, and more. Case also incorporates a lot of levity into the story through a handful of central debates between the characters, including, “Is Phish a good band?”

“When you’re young, you have so little control over your own life—you are subject to the whims of your parents or guardians, which is not always a bad thing if they truly have your best interests at heart, but unfortunately that’s not the case for all kids,” said Case in a statement. “Part of being a teenager is trying to figure out who you are, and that’s hard—but even harder when those around you cannot accept who you discover yourself to be.

“Will anyone recognize your value as a person when your goal is not to make the football team, or get into a prestigious college, or be crowned homecoming queen, but to simply get through the experience of being a teenager relatively unscathed?” Case continued. “Maybe smoking weed in the woods and stealing sunglasses from the mall aren’t the most productive coping mechanisms, but what else is a disaffected 16-year-old in a rural town to do?”

Check out an exclusive preview from the 120-page print edition of Rigsby WI, Volume 1: Foothold below.

This comic is as bittersweet as it is funny, with a delightful cast of characters. Rigsby WI will appeal to fans of Forest Hills Bootleg Society by Dave Baker and Nicole Goux; Let’s Play by Leeanne M. Krecic AKA Mongie; and Mariko Tamaki and Jillian Tamaki’s Roaming (one of our best graphic novels of 2023).

The BackerKit campaign for Rigsby WI, Volume 1: Foothold will go live in April and run for one month. For updates on the campaign, including a link to support as soon as it’s published, sign up here.
