  • Models have Hawaii in Hurricane Kiko’s path

    Kiko formed off the coast of southern Mexico from a tropical wave. It became a tropical storm on Aug. 31, making it the fourteenth named storm of the eastern Pacific hurricane season. Kiko intensified into a hurricane on Sept. 2. 


    What You Need To Know

    • Kiko is the fourteenth named storm of the eastern Pacific hurricane season

    • Models have Hurricane Kiko moving close to the Hawaiian Islands next week


    Kiko intensified into a Category 4 hurricane on Sept. 3, and currently has maximum winds of 130 mph. It is moving west at 9 mph and is located nearly 1600 miles east of Hilo, HI.


    Models have Kiko taking a west-northwesterly track over the weekend into next week, coming close to Hawaii. 

    While it’s too soon for impact details, the cooler waters near the Aloha State should weaken Kiko greatly. We’ll continue to monitor the track and provide updates. 


     

    Hurricane Hone passed just to the south of the Big Island of Hawaii in 2024 as a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 85 mph. Here are other cyclones that came close to the islands.

The winter solstice falls between Dec. 20-22. As a result, each season can be anywhere from 89 to 93 days long.

    That would make record-keeping for weather and climate extremely tricky. Making comparisons between years isn’t quite apples-to-apples if the start and length of a season change each year.

    That’s why we have climatological seasons. They always start on the first day of a particular month and only vary between 90 and 92 days long or 3 months at a time. This makes data and record keeping streamlined for meteorologists and climatologists.

    It also turns out that the warmest and coldest 91-day periods of the year line up better with climatological summer and winter.

  • USGS records 2.5-magnitude earthquake near Springboro

    DAYTON, Ohio — The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a 2.5-magnitude earthquake that shook the state’s southwestern side on Sunday.

    The USGS said the earthquake hit just a few miles northwest of Springboro around 11 a.m., which is between Dayton and Cincinnati. It was rated as a “minor” earthquake. The depth of the earthqauke was around 7.5 miles deep, according to USGS. 

    There have been no damage reports so far. Shaking may have been felt in Miamisburg and Centerville, according to USGS.

  • A look back at Hurricane Katrina, 20 years later

    Hurricane Katrina remains infamous as one of the deadliest hurricanes ever to strike the United States.


    What You Need To Know

    • Hurricane Katrina reached Category 5 status but made landfall as a Category 3 with winds of 125 mph
    • Record storm surge was reported across the Louisiana and Mississippi coastlines
    • 80% of New Orleans was under water on Aug. 31, 2005


    20 years ago on Aug. 29, it made its strongest landfall as a Category 3 hurricane in southeast Louisiana and brought devastation across the city of New Orleans and surrounding parishes.

    Meteorological history

    Hurricane Katrina developed from the remnants of Tropical Depression Ten and a tropical wave near the Lesser Antilles. It became Tropical Depression Twelve over the southeastern Bahamas on Aug. 23.

    On Aug. 24, it was classified as Tropical Storm Katrina, and it moved through the northwestern part of the Bahamas on Aug. 25. It strengthened into a hurricane on the evening of Aug. 25 just before making its first landfall near the Miami-Dade/Broward County line.

    The storm drifted southwest across southern Florida before moving over the eastern Gulf on Aug. 26. Over the warm waters of the Gulf, Katrina rapidly intensified, becoming a Category 5 hurricane with winds of 175 mph on Aug. 28.

    Katrina turned to the northwest and then north, making its second landfall near Buras, LA, in the southeastern part of the state on Aug. 29. It had weakened to a Category 3, with winds of 125 mph, just before landfall.

    Approximately five hours later, Katrina made a third landfall near the Louisiana/Mississippi border with winds estimated at 120 mph, still a Category 3 hurricane.


    Katrina moved over land and weakened but still maintained hurricane strength near Laurel, Mississippi. It was finally downgraded to a tropical depression on Aug. 30 before dissipating altogether on Aug. 31.

    Katrina’s impacts

    Katrina wasn’t just a Louisiana/Mississippi storm; at its height, it was 780 miles from east to west and about the same distance from north to south. Hurricane conditions were reported in southeastern Louisiana, southern Mississippi and southwestern Alabama, with storm surges reported as far east as Destin, FL.

    Storm surge affected coastal regions, with a 20-mile-wide swath of 24 to 28 feet along the Mississippi Coast. The highest surge was at Pass Christian, MS, at 27.8 feet. The storm surge was so high that it overtopped the levees in the city of New Orleans, leading to levee failures and extensive flooding. 80% of New Orleans was under water on Aug. 31.

    The damage and destruction it caused equated to $125 billion (un-adjusted 2005 dollars). Not to mention the thousands of lives lost.

  • Bradenton resident receive flooding from rainfall

    MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — Our Weather Experts have been tracking significant rainfall in Manatee County since Saturday. They say areas of East Bradenton have received five to six inches of rain, leading to localized flooding for residents.

    There’s been a lot of rain in Bradenton the last few days, and with this rainfall, you’ll see pockets of flooding here and there while driving through the area. But one resident said flooding has been a consistent battle on her property for the last few years whenever it rains.

    “It’s a complete lake all the way out to the road. This whole property from here forward floods. It’s a huge lake,” Barbara Ficklin said.

    Ficklin lives off Waterline Road in Bradenton. She says rainfall and runoff from nearby developments flooded her property. The water rose to within feet of her house.

    “It just starts coming and rising and rising from the runoff upstream,” she said.

    Ficklin says this has been happening for about three years now and she has contacted county commissioners several times.

    Manatee County officials released a statement regarding this specific area:

    “We have received numerous reports of standing water and street flooding in various areas around the county.”

    But her main priority is keeping her animals safe.

    “We haven’t let the horses out in two days because the land is so wet. If they run, they could hurt themselves. So, they have been in the barn for two days and they’re not very happy,” she said.

    Because of the consistent flooding on her property, she’s had unexpected expenses.

    “This year, we have paid to secure a hurricane flash flood stall at a facility — a stall for each of these horses we’ve reserved. And you pay in advance. But just to have that peace of mind was worth it,” Ficklin said.

    Now she’s hoping there will be a solution soon, not just to protect her home from potentially flooding, but also to protect her animals.

    “Fix what’s going on, put proper drainage in,” she said.

    Ficklin said she spoke with County Commissioner Carol Felts on Monday about the ongoing flooding issue. She hopes the commissioners can work together toward a solution.

    A tropical depression or storm could form this weekend southeast of Bermuda as the system turns north in the Atlantic. It has high odds (90%) to develop over the next couple of days.

    Another tropical wave that emerged off the African coast will continue to move westward with with much lower odds for tropical development. Conditions will be more favorable once it reaches the Caribbean Sea.

    Neither of these disturbances pose a threat to the U.S. right now.

    August is one of the busier months in the hurricane season, so activity will likely pick up in the coming weeks. The next name on the list is Fernand.

  • Changes to FEMA maps could mean Clearwater residents will need flood insurance

    CLEARWATER, Fla. — Hundreds of Clearwater homes could be added to special flood hazard areas on FEMA maps. That would mean some homeowners would be newly required to buy flood insurance.

    • Clearwater’s floodplain administrator says 369 buildings in the city are added to the special flood hazard area on the preliminary maps, while 203 others are removed
    • Homeowners added to the hazard area with federally backed loans or a mortgage would be required to get flood insurance
    • A 90-day comment period on the preliminary maps is expected later this year


    “This is very similar to what we currently have,” Clearwater Floodplain Administrator Gene Henry said of the preliminary maps.

    Henry said the city started gathering data for the updated flood insurance rate maps five years ago. That information was passed on to FEMA, which created the new maps. 

    “You’ll get this blue area, and that’s called the special flood hazard area,” Henry said, gesturing to one of the maps. “So, there are going to be changes on people’s properties.”

    According to Henry, the preliminary maps for the Alligator Creek Watershed add 369 buildings in the city to that hazard area, while another 203 would be removed.

    “It’s better data. So, more accuracy,” Henry said of the reason for the changes. “They’ve got the LIDAR now, they’ve got better contour interval information.”

    Henry said that the owners of any homes added who have a federally backed loan or a mortgage will now need to get flood insurance. Residents outside the hazard areas can learn from the updated maps about spots around them that are now in the hazard areas.

    “The orange areas are the .2%, or what we call the 500-year. Flood insurance is not required, but if someone would ask me, I would say get the low-risk policy,” Henry said. “That flood hazard area may not have been there before, or it may not have gone down that street, but you saw the water there in Milton, or you saw it in one of the other events. So, the models pick it up because we have to know that.”

    Henry told Spectrum News the city has time to work through what the maps mean for residents. A 90-day comment period will be held later this year for residents and businesses to weigh in on the maps and let the city know if they think any of the changes are incorrect. That will be passed on to FEMA for consideration. The city also created a website where residents can enter their address and see if they’re impacted by the changes.

    We’re watching three other areas of interest in the central and eastern Atlantic behind Erin with development potential in the coming days.

    A tropical wave in the central tropical Atlantic is moving westward producing some disorganized showers and storms. Conditions will become more favorable for development in the next couple days.

    A tropical depression could form late this week or this weekend as the system continues to move westward near the Leeward Islands. It has high odds (70%) to develop this week.

    Another tropical wave that has emerged off the African coast will continue to move westward with medium odds for tropical development. A short-lived tropical depression could form by late week into the weekend, but conditions will become unfavorable after that.

    An area of low pressure in the central tropical Atlantic has low odds for development over the next seven days.

    Neither of these disturbances pose a threat to the U.S. right now.

    August is one of the busier months in the hurricane season, so activity will likely pick up in the coming weeks. The next name on the list is Fernand.

  • Hurricane Erin’s high tides, rough waves threaten sea turtle nests on NC beaches

    The rough surf and high tides from Hurricane Erin are threatening sea turtle nests on North Carolina’s beaches, according to groups tasked with monitoring the nests.

    Sea turtles crawl up onto the beach to lay their eggs in the summer. Loggerhead turtles are the most common species seen in North Carolina, according to North Carolina Aquariums. But green, hawksbill, Kemp’s ridley and leatherback turtles will also nest on North Carolina beaches. 

    All sea turtle species are listed as endangered.

    “Eggs are able to handle some ocean over wash. In some cases over wash has a positive effect and keeps nests from lethal high temperatures. Nests underwater, eggs sitting in water for a sustained period, is something else, and usually not survivable,” The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center said.

    “We have to trust that the millions of years of biological strategy to deposit a few hundred eggs per turtle, into the sand every summer, can sustain some losses, as occur every nesting season around the globe,” the turtle rescue group on Topsail Island said on Facebook.

    Lost nests were reported on other beaches.

    “Sadly we are aware of the state of our sea turtle nests. Please remember that it is illegal to take eggs,” Emerald Isle Sea Turtle Patrol said on social media.

    The turtle rescue group on Oak Island also reported at least two nests lost there.

    Hurricane Erin is still a strong hurricane and is expected to grow even larger, expanding its wind field. Erin is expected to produce life-threatening surf and rip currents along the beaches of the Bahamas, the U.S. East Coast, Bermuda and Atlantic Canada this week.

It brushed past the northern Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico and Hispaniola, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds and dangerous surf, but it has avoided any direct impacts to land.

    During the next few days, Erin is forecast to take a turn to the north, and eventually the northeast. It’s expected to stay offshore of the U.S. East Coast, moving in between Bermuda and the U.S. 

    Erin is expected to remain a hurricane through late week. Cooler waters and increasing wind shear will weaken this storm by the weekend.


    The cone of uncertainty displays where the center of a storm could be located. It does not predict which areas may feel the storm’s impact. Anyone outside but near the cone should be on alert and make storm preparations.

    A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for:

    • Beaufort Inlet to Duck, N.C.

    A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for: 

    • Bermuda
    • North of Duck, N.C. to Cape Charles Light to Chincoteague, Va.

    Storm Surge Warnings are also in effect from Cape Lookout to Duck, N.C. The combination of storm surge and tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline.

    The water could reach up to 2 to 4 feet above ground level from Cape Lookout to Duck, N.C., and 1 to 3 feet southward to parts of South Carolina, and northward to the Delmarva Peninsula.

    The deepest water will occur along the immediate coast.


    The primary impacts across these areas will occur late tonight into Thursday as Erin passes closest offshore, especially during high tide.

    While the strongest winds will stay over the Atlantic, it’s likely that some strong wind gusts will impact the Outer Banks, and possibly the Canadian Maritimes.

    Storm Surge Warnings are also in effect from Cape Lookout to Duck, N.C. The combination of storm surge and tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline.

    The water could reach up to 2 to 4 feet above ground level from Cape Lookout to Duck, N.C., and 1 to 3 feet southward to parts of South Carolina, and northward to the Delmarva Peninsula.

    The deepest water will occur along the immediate coast.


    The primary impacts across these areas will occur late tonight into Thursday as Erin passes closest offshore, especially during high tide.

    While the strongest winds will stay over the Atlantic, it’s likely that some strong wind gusts will impact the Outer Banks, and possibly the Canadian Maritimes.

    Although the 2025 hurricane season seems like it’s been slow to start with only five named storms, there’s still a long way to go, and with NOAA’s above-average prediction, that streak won’t likely last.


    What You Need To Know

    What methods do we use to get information about a storm?

    If a storm is in the middle of the Atlantic, we use radar observations to get data, but if a storm is close enough to an area of land, we send scientists into the storm from above. This special group of professionals is called Hurricane Hunters.

    Hurricane Hunters

    Two branches of Hurricane Hunters now exist, one operated by NOAA and the other by the United States Air Force. Beginning in the 1960s, Weather Bureau aircraft began flying into storms to gain data about the intensity and conditions of the atmosphere. It wasn’t until 1976 that the aircraft had a Doppler radar.

    Peter Guittari, a retired Hurricane Hunter talks about his time in the squad and the most impressive storm he flew into. from the Air Force, remembers those days in the 1970s. From 1979 through 1991, he flew missions out of Keesler Airforce Base in Biloxi, MS. He flew WC-130 military planes, Bs, Es and Hs.

    “We got to see some very very nice places, including the Caribbean and the Pacific,” he said, recalling his time fondly.

    As for how he ended up a Hurricane Hunter. “I was in the 130s, and the unit needed some extra people. I was a flight engineer, and they needed extra people. A buddy of mine was in that squadron, and he called me up and asked if any of you guys would like to come here and do this? And we said yes, so that was 1979, and I was flying 130s for about four years.”

    Collecting data

    Once a storm was identified that needed data, a crew was assembled and briefed. Guittari says that when they took flight, they would fly as high as they could to save fuel and then drop down to 1500 feet so the weather and dropsonde operators could collect their data.

    While he flew hundreds of missions over his twelve years with the Hurricane Hunters, his most memorable storm occurred in the Pacific, specifically, Super Typhoon Forrest in Sept. 1983. “We estimated the winds to be in excess of 200 knots.”

    He loved his job, and the only reason he left was that they closed the squadron down. To this day, he has an appreciation for meteorology, and although he now lives in northern Arkansas, he still follows storms when they make news.
