I just can’t take my eyes off this belted sheath from Karen Millen. The gray color is a perfect neutral, but the notched collar and slightly puffed shoulders give it a little something special.

If you’re looking for other colors or sleeve lengths, we’ve got you covered.

The dress is on sale for $239.40 (marked down from $342) at Karen Millen and comes in sizes 2–12.

A more affordable option is from Donna Morgan — it’s $30.99 on clearance at JCPenney and also available at Amazon.

This shade of purple looks like a crocus peeking out to signify the start of spring. Boss always has top-notch dresses, but this might be my favorite of the season.

If you’re looking for a blazer to pair with it, you could always go for a traditional black or charcoal, but I think I’d probably choose something tweed-y, like this double-breasted jacket from Veronica Beard.

The dress is $495 at Nordstrom and comes in sizes 0–18.

A couple of other purple sheath options include one in deep plum from Hobbs ($116.25 on sale at Bloomingdale’s) and one in “opal” from Calvin Klein ($99.98 at Macy’s); for plus sizes, check out this wine-colored dress from DKNY ($39.98 on clearance at Belk).

Gap was one of my go-tos for workwear basics for years, but I’ve fallen off recently. I was pleasantly surprised when I came across this gorgeous short-sleeved sweater in the New Arrivals section. It comes in six colors, including several spring-y hues.

The length looks a bit cropped on the model, so if you have a longer torso, the tall sizes might be your friend here.

The sweater is on sale for $39 (marked down from $49.95) at Gap and comes in regular sizes XXS–XXL, tall sizes S–XXL, and petite sizes XS–L.

I love the drama of this tie-neck blouse from Saint Laurent. If I were wearing this, I would want to keep the focus on the fabulous top, so I’d keep the rest of my outfit classic and tailored. I’m leaning toward some slim-fitting pants to balance out the proportions of the top, perhaps with a gorgeous trench coat over the top?

The top is $1,990 at Saks Fifth Avenue and is available in lucky sizes.

Olive green is an underappreciated neutral, in my book. If you find yourself gravitating to black, gray, and navy most days, these pleated trousers from BR Factory would be a fantastic way to incorporate a little color without going too far out of your comfort zone. And if you’re already comfortable with bright blues, pinks, and yellows, they’ll still pair nicely.

I would probably wear these with a navy striped top for a casual day and a black blazer for a more formal look.

The pants are now $48 on sale at Banana Republic Factory — with an extra 15% off at checkout — and come in regular sizes 0–20 and petite sizes 0–18. They’re also available in khaki and black.

This twist-front shirt from White House Black Market is a fun take on a traditional button-up blouse. It also comes in white, but I particularly like the look of the navy color. I’d wear it with a charcoal suit for a look that’s formal, but not too stuffy.

The shirt is on sale for $62.30 (marked down from $89) at White House Black Market and comes in regular sizes 00-18 and petite sizes 00-12.

We’ve had several sunny days in a row, and my brain is getting ready for dresses, bare legs, and warm weather. Yes, it’s going to take a few months, but a girl can dream. This midi shirtdress from Old Navy would be a great choice for the first day it really feels like spring.

If black feels too wintery for you, this also comes in “mocha taffy” and “reishi.” (I don’t know who’s naming the colors at Old Navy, but they’re really working hard over there.)

If you’re someone who loves a button-up blouse and you’re not checking out Boden, you’re missing out. Yes, sometimes their patterns and ruffles can be a little too twee for my taste, but this blue-and-white print is right up my alley. I also love that it’s 100% cotton and machine washable.

This elevated version of a T-shirt dress is making me pine for summer Fridays. Vince is a brand that knows what it’s doing when it comes to basics, and this 100% cotton dress is no exception.

It’s too chilly for me to wear this in the Northeast right now, but I would probably wear it to my business casual office once a week from May through October.

The dress is $195 at Vince and comes in sizes 1X–3X.

This black dress from Kensie is available in straight sizes and is $59.99 on clearance (lucky sizes; many other colorways). It’s selling quickly, so another option to check out is this $128 Donna Morgan dress that comes in 2–18.

I’m absolutely loving the color of this begonia-pink merino wool polo from Joseph. Kat did a roundup of her favorite merino wool sweaters last week and noted that this type of knit has the benefit of being warm, but not bulky.

Few things get me more excited than a great dress with sleeves. You just grab one thing from your closet and you’ve got a whole outfit! Perfect for dark winter mornings when just getting yourself out the door is hard enough.

This black-and-white number from Melloday would work beautifully with black tights and flat boots. Throw on a cozy cardigan if you’re looking to dress it down, or a blazer to jazz it up.

I’m a huge fan of Spanx pants and dresses, but this is the first time I can remember seeing a top that jumped out at me.

This sleeveless, tie-waist top is super flattering and would work with a variety of outfits. I haven’t seen it in person yet, but the “perfect” ponte fabric I’ve worn in the past has the perfect amount of thickness and stretch for smoothing and flattering a variety of figures.

Wear it under a long blazer for the office or with some bright ankle pants for a fun summer weekend.

Great basics can be hard to come by in the plus-sized space, so I was thrilled to see this fantastic short-sleeved sheath from Maggy London. My favorite part is that the sleeves are substantial enough that this could be worn on its own, but not so bulky that you can’t tuck them into a blazer.

If you’re already set with a basic black sheath, it also comes in navy.

The dress is $138 at Nordstrom and comes in sizes 14W-24W. It also comes in straight sizes starting at $83.

For me, the line between athleisure and workwear comes down to fabric. Yoga pants with a flared leg are athleisure. A similar silhouette in a thick ponte is workwear.

If these tapered pants from Toteme were made from terrycloth, they’d be the fanciest sweatpants in your closet, but in a stretch-crepe material, all you need are a turtleneck and some nice loafers, and you’re ready for most business-casual offices.

The pants are $440 at NET-A-PORTER and come in sizes equivalent to U.S. sizes 2–10.

I’m always wary when I hear the phrase “denim blazer,” because the first thing that pops into my mind is a Gap jean jacket that I wore over every sundress from 2002 through 2010.

Fortunately, this contrast-trim blazer from Cinq à Sept is that jean jacket’s cool, rich aunt who just flew in from NYC. The tailoring is stunning, and the contrast trim is so chic. I’m not cool enough to pull off denim-on-denim, so I’d wear this with black trousers.

With the cropped look being so prevalent, I’m constantly on the hunt for “full-length” tops and tees these days. (Tall and long-torsoed folks, I’m sure you feel my pain.) I came across these “tuckable” long-sleeved tees at Abercrombie & Fitch while I was on a quest for denim, and I quickly added to cart.

While the length is a major draw for me, the soft matte, seamless fabric looks like it would be great for wearing under a blazer. Gray and navy are on their way to my house now, and I may be adding more.

The tops are $45 at Abercrombie & Fitch and come in sizes XXS–XXL. (And for those of us who are still carrying some A&F-related high school trauma, please know that the fit is much more true to size now and the denim goes up to a size 37!)

I’m seeing a lot of this color this season, and whether you’re calling it ochre, acorn, or burnt sienna, I’m loving it.

This top from Veronica Beard would look great paired with black or navy trousers this winter or tucked into a midi skirt this spring. For the weekend, I would wear it with some bootcut or slightly flared jeans, thus perfectly replicating an outfit I’m pretty sure I wore and loved 25 years ago.

This navy floral top from Tanya Taylor is a stunner. The hand-painted navy floral print is gorgeous for winter, and the satiny fabric looks so luxurious.
