Three cheers for dresses with pockets! This blazer dress from White House Black Market is a perfect knee length and has an adjustable self-belt at the waist for a more custom fit.

I would add a blazer for a more formal look, but if bare arms fly at your office, it also looks great on its own.

The dress is $150 at White House Black Market and comes in sizes 00–18 and petite sizes 00–12.

(Unfortunately, the only plus-size options we could find were from ultra-fast-fashion brands and/or were inappropriate for the office!)

P.S. Eid Mubarak to those who celebrate!

I love a contrast detail on a blazer, and this double-breasted number from Alice + Olivia is no exception. My eye is always drawn to a classic black-and-white look, but I would love to see this jacket paired with a bright jewel tone sheath to add a little pizzazz. It would also look great with denim.

The blazer is $550 at Neiman Marcus and comes in sizes 0–14. (It’s also available at Nordstrom, but it’s selling out quickly, with only one in stock for most sizes.)

Looking for something more affordable? This Eloquii blazer is on sale for $97 (though it’s only available in sizes 14–22 at this point); this blazer from Karl Lagerfield Paris is on sale for $113 at Macy’s in sizes 2–12. Here’s an interesting take from English Factory with rickrack contrast trim — it’s $150 at Nordstrom.

It’s a little hard to get excited about spring when we’re still getting walloped with snow and ice in the Northeast, but I’m trying.

This floral-print top from J.Crew Factory will be perfect for that first sunny day when it feels like spring has actually arrived. I would pair it with dark denim if your office does casual Fridays, but if not, it would also look great with your favorite trousers.

The top is $39.50 at J.Crew Factory and comes in sizes XXS–3X.

Let’s hear it for the shirtdress as the perennial answer to “What the heck am I going to wear today?” I have one in my closet that has been to an important meeting, a baby shower, and a networking event in the past two months alone. This one from Mango has a polka-dot pattern that has just the right amount of whimsy to cover a wide range of events.

Wear it with black heels for work and add some colorful accessories for the weekend.

The dress is $59.99 at Mango and comes in sizes 0–20.

For plus sizes, try this dress from Jessica London (on sale for $49.97 at JessicaLondon.com); an alternative in tall sizes is at Gap ($54.99 on sale).

This pink tweed blazer from Ann Taylor is really calling out to my Elle Woods-inspired heart. With a color this bold, I try to keep everything else in my outfit neutral, so I’d probably wear this with a navy or gray sheath, but if you really want to lean into it, this Ann Taylor flare dress (on sale for $75.99) would be AMAZING.

The blazer is on sale for $91.29 (originally $179) at Ann Taylor and comes in straight sizes 0–14 and 00–16 in petites.

For something at a lower price, try this blazer at Macy’s ($33.99 with code) — or for plus sizes, this button-front sweater at Torrid (on sale for $53.94) or this Talbots blazer (on sale for $169.99).

I really can’t stop raving about all the great pants I’ve been finding at Old Navy lately. I bought these on a whim to get myself past the free shipping threshold during a recent sale, and they’re fantastic. They wash well (although I avoid the dryer to prevent fading), and the high-waisted, wide-leg look is something I’m really loving this spring.

I’m currently wearing these in the office with a black turtleneck and flats, but I’m looking forward to pairing them with some cute spring tops when it’s less gray and rainy.

The pants are on sale for $18.47–$32.99 at Old Navy and come in regular sizes 0–30, tall sizes 2–18, and petite sizes 0–18. They also come in two other colors.

This sheath dress from London Times has a fun little tie detail that is just speaking to me. Maybe I’m feeling nostalgic for the early aughts when Carrie Bradshaw convinced us all that we needed a giant Chanel flower affixed to our tops?)

This dress would be a great basic to have on hand if your office skews more formal, and it comes in a range of colors and prints. The pictured “shaded spruce” is my favorite of the bunch, but don’t miss out on the bright “cherries jubilee” or “high-risk red.”

  • Frugal Friday’s Workwear Report: Tapered Ankle-Length Pants – Corporette.com

    Frugal Friday’s Workwear Report: Tapered Ankle-Length Pants – Corporette.com

I don’t want to think about how many workout sneakers I have (probably 10ish pairs: 2x road running shoes and 2x trail running shoes, cross trainers, turf shoes, tennis shoes, and a few old pairs of running shoes)… and these aren’t even all of my athletic shoes (like cycling shoes), and I have chosen to make some of these shoes multipurpose even if they’re not meant to be. Side note, I’m glad I’m from a part of the country that uses the term sneakers, I think it’d be way too confusing to use a term like tennis shoe or gym shoe since they’re different shoes in my book!

I also have a pair of lightweight black Sauconys with white sole, they’re kind of a hybrid between a workout shoe and a fashion shoe.

As for fashion sneakers I have flat form black leather slip on sneakers, Adidas Grand Courts (black stripe), all white Sauconys, and gray Allbirds.

Allbirds are my errand running / casual shoe: not cute enough to be worn with a “nice outfit” or if I’m going somewhere but nicer than wearing workout shoes (and saves my workout shoes from unnecessary wear and tear). They’re comfy, trendy enough to feel good wearing out and about but nothing to write home about.

The other 3 I’m likely to wear with jeans, cute but comfy black pants, or other casual pants. I also wear them to work at my current job but couldn’t wear to other jobs. My favorite style wise are the grand courts, but they sometimes give me blisters so I don’t wear them as much as I’d like.

I don’t like longer pants with sneakers (ptsd from wet bootcut jeans and sneakers from childhood!) so I wear them with straight leg, kick flare, boyfriend, or similar cut cropped or ankle length pants (or cuffed boyfriend jeans). If I’m wearing flares or bootcut pants, I wear boots, loafers or sandals. I also usually wear black jeans or pants with my GCs so I feel like the black “matches”, but this is my personal preference.

If I were you I’d try the Treetorns with pants like I mentioned above and see if you like it.

If you’ve got a bunch of “summer outings” with interns or summer associates coming up, this dress will do it all. You can toss on a blazer for the office, but this would also be perfect to wear for your Broadway shows, your baseball games (add sneakers), your cooking classes, or your scavenger hunts.

I’m very into the dresses-with-loafers look recently, so I’d probably pair this with my favorite Rothy’s.

The fact that I haven’t featured this dress before feels downright criminal. This knot-front pleated dress from Eloquii is one of my favorite items. The fit is gorgeous, it comes in a wide range of colors, and it’s machine washable. Amazing.

This “lilac rose” color caught my eye, but it comes in black and four other beautiful jewel tones.

The dress is on safe for $54.97 with code (originally $109.95) at Eloquii and comes in sizes 14–32.

This short-sleeved dress from Quince looks like a great summer basic at a fantastic price. I know cap sleeves aren’t for everyone, but I find them to be one of the better options for wearing under a jacket or sweater.

I would pair the ecru dress with an olive blazer for a spring-y look, but it also comes in your classic black, charcoal, and navy if you’re looking for something a little more traditional.

The dress is $49.90 at Quince and comes in sizes XS–XL.

The Somerset dress from Anthropologie has been my go-to for a few summers now, so I was pleasantly surprised to find this blouse in the same cut. This cheery red print would be fantastic for the office.

I would add some navy trousers and fun jewelry for a casual Friday. (NB: If you are on the bustier side, I sometimes use this delightful micro-stitch device to add a little extra coverage with tops like these.)

The top is $98 at Anthropologie and comes in sizes XS–XL.

The J.Crew cashmere tees are classic for a reason. They’re well-priced (albeit frequently excluded from J.Crew’s sales), and the roomy fit is a pleasant surprise in a time when everything seems to be cropped and fitted.

For most of winter, you’re going to find me in shades of black and gray (or, as I like to call it, “black pastels”), but the minute the thermometer starts creeping up above freezing, I’m looking for the brightest, preppiest tops I can find.

The abstract swirl print on this blouse caught my eye during my monthly scroll of the Loft website. The bright blue color (or is it cerulean?) would work nicely with all of my winter neutrals, but I’m looking forward to wearing it with white pants and sandals in a few months.

Somehow, these pants from Reformation have never crossed my radar, but the fact that they come in ELEVEN colorways is always a good sign. (Like a lot of people on the internet, I was poking around the site after seeing the Monica Lewinsky ads.)

The slate blue color caught my eye as a fun alternative to a typical neutral, but I’ve been struggling to think about what to pair them with. I think I’d try out an ivory blazer for a more formal look, but I’d probably eventually end up with my go-to black turtleneck until the weather warms up a bit more.

The pants are $178 at Reformation and come in sizes 0–12 as well as petites and plus sizes.

We just rounded some up, and general favorites include pleated pairs like Favorite Daughter, Everlane*, Reformation*, and Abercrombie*, with flat-front pairs from Good American,* M.M.LaFleur, and Ann Taylor. I’m not even remotely surprised that Veronica Beard has created an absolutely perfect knit blazer. The brand is one of the best in the biz when it comes to women’s jackets (the Dickey blazer is a longtime favorite around here), and this perfectly-tailored number fits right in.

I would pair this mushroomy-brown color with a black turtleneck for as long as it’s still chilly out and swap over to some brighter colors when spring finally arrives.

The pants are on sale for $42 (marked down from $79) at Torrid and come in sizes equivalent to 10–30.

Athleta has an option in a wider range of sizes (0–26) for $46.97–$109.

Ever since I read the New York Times article about the “unexpected red” design trend (gift link), I feel like red things are popping out at me everywhere I look. This top from Of Mercer isn’t exactly “unexpected” in color, but the pintucks at the waist aren’t something you see every day!

I would wear this with trousers and a sweater blazer for a pulled-together business casual look.

The top is $118 at Of Mercer and comes in sizes XS–XL.
