Splurge Monday’s Workwear Report: Hutton Dress – Corporette.com

I very much want a “fresh start” with my style (clothing, maybe hair, and apartment decor). I’m turning 30 in three weeks, started a new job in April, will graduate with my masters in December, and am coming off of a breakup. I have maybe $1,000 to throw at the problem (I am cash flowing grad school, so can’t spend too too much).

I don’t love my apartment, it’s fine but not great but it’s affordable in a neighborhood that I LOVE. I signed an 18 month lease renewal in February, so I’ve got about a year left to embrace it. Luckily I’m set on furniture, but I couid use ti reorganize it / purge / redecorate a bit.

I have an appointment for highlights as a birthday gift to myself (my first time ever dying my hair!). I’m debating trying lash extensions or treating myself to more frequent professional manicures this summer. I want to change my look, not too drastically, but something. And, I want to feel more put together.

I love fashion and have been on a budget, so my clothes and accessories are a mix of cheaper brands or thrifted items with the very occasional splurge. I’ve dealt with some medical stuff over the last 18 months and am (finally) on the other end of it (I hope), but my weight has been all over the place as a result. I can’t decide if I should embrace where I am now and purge my closet, only keep what I really love and that fit, and invest in some new, nicer pieces or if I should wait and see where my body settles out. I know waiting makes more sense, but I feel like I’ve been in this bad slog of medical stuff and clothing not being what i want for so long now that I don’t want to keep waiting. And, FWIW by nicer I mean Madewell or BR, not designer!

I guess my life just felt so unsettled the last few years as I’ve known a lot of things were a) not right (old job, apartment, medical stuff) or b) not settled (being in school, being in a long distance relationship). I really want to go into this next year if my life feeling more permanent and put together and embrace coming out the other end doing alright!

Not sure what I’m asking, almost looking for a guide ir suggestions of how to decide what changes to make?

This short-sleeved shirtdress from Zoe and Claire is a great under-$100 option for hot summer days. It’s not lined, so you may want to consider wearing a slip for extra coverage. (They’re a little harder to find these days, but I’ve had something like this in my closet for years and years.)

I would wear this to the office with a pair of loafers or mules and bring a sweater blazer just in case the air conditioning is running at full blast.

The dress is $78 and comes in sizes S–XL. It’s also available in white and mocha.

For a wider size range, try this dress from J.Crew — it’s available in white and black in 00–24 for $168. (Note that the smocking at the waist makes it a bit more casual.)

A lot of fantastic basics from Banana Republic Factory have made their way into my wardrobe lately (this reader-favorite tee, for example), but this hot pink blazer caught my eye as a not-so-basic wardrobe addition for the summer. The linen blend is a lighter option for summer and the bright hue will liven up any outfit.

I’m always a little nervous about white pants, but I think this would look fantastic with white trousers and a white top for a fresh, summery look.

The blazer is $50 at Banana Republic Factory and comes in regular sizes 0-18 and petite sizes 00-14. It also comes in five other colors.

Macy’s has a plus-size option in their Bar III line — it’s available in 0X-4X and on sale for $54.

All of my sartorial role models are wearing fun blazers these days, so I’m on the lookout for some pieces to add to my wardrobe. This vibrant jacquard jacket from the Carlisle Collection is capital-F Fun. I would pair it with a coordinating pink top and my favorite trousers for a professional, but not stuffy, summer look.

As an aside, I wasn’t familiar with this brand until one of my beloved college roommates texted me in the middle of a Very Important Meeting to let me know that one of her colleagues was wearing this blazer and it was “stunning.” Lucky sizes only, sadly.

The blazer is $795 at the Carlisle Collection and comes in sizes 0-18.

The peplum top is back, whether we’re ready for it or not. I’m leaning towards a more subtle peplum than I wore 10 years ago, and this ribbed tank from Halogen is right up my alley. To make the look more 2024 than 2014, I would pair it with some wider-leg trousers (not brightly-colored skinny jeans), skip the statement bubble necklace, and go with some more delicate jewelry.

The “Miami green” color of this top is on sale for $47.40 at Nordstrom ($79 for navy blue) and comes in sizes 1X–3X. It also comes in more color options in straight sizes.

Shirtdresses are summer staples for me. They’re cool enough so I don’t look completely wilted after my commute, but still polished enough for the office.

This bottle-green number from Talbots is right up my alley. I would swap out the self-belt for something in a darker color and add some comfy flats and gold jewelry.

It’s a Friday and spring is here, so I’m looking for T-shirts that are office-appropriate, but still comfy enough for weekends. This peplum tee from White House Black Market might be a little bit of a know-your-office situation because of the detailing around the bust, but I think the shape is gorgeous.

It comes in six colors, but I love this olive green as an unexpected neutral.

The Talbots Charming Cardigan has been a long-standing bestseller for the brand, but this pattern is something else. (H/t to Kat who saw this in a brick-and-mortar store and recommended it!) The pattern is gorgeous and would pair nicely with a navy sheath for a more formal office, or dark denim for a casual Friday.

The sweater is $99.50-$109 at Talbots and comes in misses sizes XS-XL, petite sizes P-XL, and plus sizes X-3X.

I have a white poplin top in my closet that’s very similar to this one, and it’s consistently one of my most-worn spring/summer items.

(Did I buy two because I’m a spiller and I know that about myself? Yes, I did.)

My favorite way to wear it is with a comfy pair of linen pants on the weekends, but for the office, I’ve been pairing it with wide-leg cropped pants for these early spring days.

This pale blue blazer from Halogen looks perfectly spring-y. I don’t gravitate towards a lot of pastels (I’m a winter, remember?), but this might be the exception.

As a lawyer, I spend a lot of my time thinking about what lawyers wear and why they wear it, so it’s always fun to chat with folks from different fields about their work wardrobes. A friend who is a high-level executive with a lot of international travel on her schedule swears by M.M.LaFleur for her big events.

I took a look through some of the new offerings and am absolutely loving this electric blue midi dress. The half sleeves provide a little coverage, the pleats look fabulous, and the length feels more modern than a traditional knee-length sheath. And, while I was bummed that MMLF got rid of their plus-sized line, I’m delighted to see that this dress is available in up to a size 20!

The dress is $335 and comes in sizes 00–20. It also comes in four other colorways.

Not wearing many dresses lately? Vince Camuto has a puff-sleeve blouse in a very similar shade of blue, and it’s $69 at Nordstrom.

This side-knot dress from Nordstrom Rack comes in eight colors — usually a sign that it’s a hit.

We’re slowly creeping into spring in the Northeast, but I know that sweltering summer temperatures aren’t too far away. A lightweight dress is a necessity for the last few weeks of July when the short walk from the air-conditioned car to the air-conditioned office feels like it might break me.

This modal sheath will keep you cool outside but can also be layered nicely under a sweater blazer once you step indoors. At this price, it might become my new summer uniform.

The dress is $29.97 at Nordstrom Rack and comes in sizes XXS–XL.

A short-sleeved sweater is one of my summer wardrobe must-haves for an overly air-conditioned office. They look seasonally appropriate when you step outside the building but still provide a little extra warmth when some man in a full suit has cranked the air conditioning up.

This one from Banana Republic comes in four great neutrals, great for layering under blazers or cardigans.

The sweater is $80 at Banana Republic and comes in sizes XXS-XXL.

I am totally loving the cheery green print on this J.Crew Factory midi skirt. Something about the combination of the kelly green and the flowers is making my heart sing.

To me, the trick for making a skirt like this one work for the office is to keep the top super conservative. With this print, I’d probably do a crisp, white button-up or a shell with a blazer.

How pretty are these bright cobalt pants from Aqua? Every pair of pants I’ve purchased this year has been a similarly wide-leg cut, so I’m excited about the idea of adding some fun colors to the mix.

For work, I would wear this with a powder blue or turquoise top, just to really lean into the bright colors. If you’re feeling a bit more subdued, I would do gray or navy.

The pants are $78 at Bloomingdale’s and are available in sizes XS–XXL in eight (!) colors.

Here are two plus-size options (lucky sizes only): Talbots’ wide crop pants, for $89.99 on sale (also in three other size ranges) and straight-leg pants from J.Crew (up to size 24), on sale for $69.99.

I happened to wander past a brick-and-mortar Talbots store last week and this cardigan caught my eye. The colors are really fun, and the scallop stripes are just a little bit of a break from the norm.

With a pattern this bright, I would probably stick to a neutral color palette for the rest of my outfit, but if you’ve got an orange dress that you’ve been looking to wear, this might be the perfect match.

The sweater is on sale for $79.99–$89.99 at Talbots and comes in misses sizes XS–XL, petite sizes P–XL, and plus sizes X–3X.

I’m very into the color of this tweed dress from Misook. It’s not exactly spring-y, but I would seriously consider buying this and hanging onto it for that period in early fall when it’s still warm but you’re ready for the leaves to turn.

If you’re looking for something a little more suited to the spring months, it also comes in a much cheerier “sunset red” and “French blue.”

The dress is $250, marked down from $358 at Nordstrom, and comes in sizes XXS–XL.

Ann Taylor has a few more affordable (and more spring-y) options in light blue, pale yellow, and pink (all on sale for $109). For plus sizes, try this Calvin Klein dress in light blue and light pink for $89.99 and up.

Diane von Furstenburg’s recent collaboration with Target has spurred some discussion online about whether the wrap dress is a “dated” look in 2024. For my two cents, the look is a classic, but in a post-2020 world, everyone is a bit more casual, so there are just fewer situations in which a wrap dress feels appropriate.

Fortunately, if you are a wrap-dress-lover who happens to work in a formal office, that seems like one of the few remaining places where the dress will shine. I love this midi-length silhouette from DvF for a slightly more updated look.

The dress is $398 and comes in sizes S–XXL.

With a different style but also a fun orange print (and a lower price) is this dress from AllSaints that’s $169 in straight sizes at Nordstrom.

I love the easy elegance of this funnel-neck tank from Everlane. If you’re in an office where bare arms are acceptable, this would look lovely with a midi skirt for a fun spring look. If you are in a setting that skews more formal, it would be perfect for layering under blazers and sweaters.

With a high neck like this one, necklaces can be a bit tricky, so I’d stick to earrings or a fun bracelet for accessories.

The top is $40 at Everlane and comes in sizes XXS–XXL. It also comes in three other colors.

Here are a couple of plus-size options: a Lands’ End top for $23 on sale (1X–3X) and this Talbots shell for $79.50 with 30% off at checkout (X–3X).
