Most of my favorite work pants these days are of the pull-on variety, and this burgundy pair from Old Navy looks like it would be a fabulous option for the fall.

This cut can skew a little casual, so I probably wouldn’t wear these to a business formal office, but I think the pleated front and creased legs would make these pants appropriate for most business casual offices. Pair with your favorite work-appropriate tee and a sweater blazer for a comfortable, but professional, autumnal outfit.

The pants are $39.99 at Old Navy — with 40% off at checkout! — and come in regular sizes XS-4X, tall sizes S-XXL, and petite sizes XS-L. In addition to burgundy, they come in gray, black, navy, tan, and houndstooth.

Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

Most retailers have their autumn collections out by now, but I know I won’t be wearing sweaters for at least another month or two. This tie-waist dress from Nordstrom is a perfect end-of-summer piece to hold you over until you can break out the warm sweaters and tights.

Once the weather turns a bit cooler, you could even layer it with the long cardigans that are starting to make a comeback.

The dress is $79.50 at Nordstrom and comes in black, olive, and brown in sizes XXS-XXL. It also comes in plus sizes, but sadly only in the olive color.

I keep hearing good things about the cashmere selection at Garnet Hill, and this gorgeous polo sweater is really calling my name. If you work in a place where lots of folks are wearing polos and khakis, this feels like a slightly elevated way of matching the vibe.

I would pair this with a pair of slim-fitting trousers and flats for an elegant business casual outfit.

The sweater is $179 at Garnet Hill and comes in sizes XS-XL. It also comes in seven other colors.

I know Barbie summer was last year, but I still couldn’t resist this cheery tweed jacket from L’Agence. Not everyone can pull off a hot pink blazer, but if you can, this one’s for you. I love the gold buttons and orange trim, because this is no time for subtlety.

I would probably pair this with a white top and navy trousers because I’m a wimp, but if you’re feeling particularly bold, a hot pink sheath would make for a gorgeous monochromatic look.

The blazer is $542.50, marked down from $725, at Bloomingdale’s and comes in sizes 0-14.

What are we wearing on humid August days when we are required to show up in the office and look somewhat put-together, despite the fact that we’re melting? Let’s do a linen shirtdress. Will it get a little bit rumpled as the day goes on? Yes, of course, but aren’t we all a little bit rumpled at 80% humidity levels?

This short-sleeved dress from Karen Kane has slightly puffed sleeves and a breezy, but still structured feeling to it. I would probably swap out the self-belt for a braided leather belt to add a little more structure, but otherwise this looks perfect for getting us through until the heat breaks.

The dress is $166-$238 at Bloomingdale’s and comes in sizes XS-XL. In addition to this gorgeous green, it also comes in black and orange.

This cardigan from ba&sh is described as a “little couture jacket that’s revisited in a knit,” and that feels spot-on. I love the round neckline and 7/8-length sleeves, which lend themselves perfectly to accessorizing.

The best part is that it comes in 12 (!) different colors, perfect for topping off any fall outfits. This olive green caught my eye, but I could also be persuaded to add the kelly green or navy versions to my collection.

The sweater is $380 at ba&sh and comes in sizes XS–XL, but size availability may vary depending on color.

A more affordable option is from J.Crew Factory — it’s available in XXS–3X for $48.50.

Bar exams have just wrapped up around the country, which means we’ve got a brand-new crop of baby lawyers relaxing for the first time in months and getting ready to start new jobs any moment now. If they’re anything like I was, they’re very excited for the next chapter and absolutely up to their ears in student debt.

Building a new work wardrobe on a budget can be challenging, but grabbing a few key pieces at great prices can help until the paychecks start coming in.

I wore Gap pants almost exclusively for my first few years of business casual, and these high-rise, slightly flared trousers look like a great option. Plus, they come in three different inseams, so you can save some money on tailoring.

The pants are $39-$47, marked down from $79, at Gap and come in sizes 0-20 in regular, tall, and petite inseams.

Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

I’ve been thinking a lot about “starter” wardrobes for folks just starting out in the workforce lately, and when I came across this short-sleeved dress from Banana Republic Factory, all I could think was “I would have worn that at least once a week when I was a junior associate.”

A basic black dress that fits well is worth its weight in gold when you’re trying to build a professional wardrobe from scratch. Wear this one on its own, under a cropped cardigan, with a non-matching blazer — the sky’s the limit. And if your budget allows, grab the blue color too!

The dress is $54 at Banana Republic Factory and comes in regular sizes XS-XL and petite sizes XXS-L.

Hunting for something similar? Some of the best dresses for work as of 2024 include options from J.Crew, BOSS, T. Tahari, and Lands’ End. For really affordable options, check out Quince and Amazon sellers Miusol or MUXXN. We’ve also rounded up the best plus-size dresses for work!

There are a handful of influencers who routinely show up on my feed modeling their latest selections in fast-fashion trends. Every once in a while, I take the bait and order something they’re selling, but I’m usually disappointed.

This shirtdress from Old Navy has been a notable exception. It does tend to wrinkle a bit, so I’d lean toward the darker colors, but it’s a perfect breezy option for those hot summer days when you want to be hanging out in a bathing suit but need to look like a real person.

The dress is $25, marked down from $49.99, at Old Navy and comes in regular sizes XS-4X, petite sizes XS-XXL, and tall sizes XS-XXL.

I am absolutely smitten with this sweet mock-neck sweater from Anthropologie. (The brand calls this colorway “rose,” but it looks more like a poppy to me?)

My office leans on the more casual end of the business casual spectrum, so I would wear this to work with some slimmer-cut pants and a pair of loafers. If you’re on the more formal end of the spectrum, I would zhuzh it up by tucking it into a high-waisted skirt and adding some great shoes.

The sweater is $98 at Anthropologie and comes in plus sizes 1X-3X, petite sizes XS-XL, and standard sizes XXS-XL. It also comes in seven other colorways, but sadly, not all colors are available in the non-standard sizes.

This striped midi skirt looks so summery that it makes me want to drink a glass of lemonade on a patio. I love that it comes in both regular and petite sizes. (I’m not usually a petite, but with midi skirts, I sometimes find the petite lengths more flattering.)

Wear this with a short-sleeved sweater and some flats for a perfect business casual look or with a tank top and sandals for the weekend.

The skirt is $45 at Banana Republic Factory — with 20% off at checkout — and comes in petite sizes 00-12 and regular sizes 0-18. It does come in two other patterns, but only in the regular sizes.

The traditional knee-length pencil skirts that I wore for the first 10 years of my career don’t seem to be as prevalent these days. If you like the silhouette and are looking for a more current interpretation, this midi-length number from Banana Republic is gorgeous.

For workwear with a bit of stretch to it, I always prefer a thicker fabric, like this ponte, to avoid any potential mishaps.

The skirt is $140 at Banana Republic and comes in regular sizes XXS-XXL, tall sizes S-XL, and petite sizes XXS-L. It also comes in “hyper navy blue.”

While the Anniversary Sale is kicking off over at Nordstrom, I always like to take a look at Nordstrom Rack to see if there are any good deals to be had. I’ve had really good luck over the last few years finding some great items over at the old Rack while everyone else is distracted with the NAS.

This Adrianna Papell cardigan jumped out at me as a perfect choice for those days where a blazer is too formal but you definitely need a topper of some kind. I like the contrasting detailing and patch pockets on the front.

The cardigan is $29.97 at Nordstrom Rack and comes in sizes XS-XL. It also comes in cream.

M.M.LaFleur has been making some of the best jardigans in the business for over a decade, and the Jolie is the newest addition to their collection. I’ve had the cropped Sant Ambroeus jardigan in my closet for several years now and I still wear it at least once a month.

The Jolie is similarly cropped but has chic lapels for a little extra flair. With the cropped length, I would wear it with some high-waisted trousers or an A-line dress.

I’m always on the lookout for better versions of the basics that are already in my closet, and this cashmere shell from La Ligne looks like a winner.

It’s made from a cashmere/Lycra blend, so the fit is impeccable. I would wear this striped version with a pair of navy pants on a casual Friday in my bare-arms-friendly office.

For a more buttoned-up, but still summery look, I would pair the black version with black pants and my favorite white blazer.

The tank is $175 at La Ligne and comes in sizes XS-XL. It also comes in red and navy, and has a matching cardigan. You can find it in some colors at Neiman Marcus and Saks as well.

It’s hard to make an article of clothing that contains both stripes and polka dots but still looks sophisticated, but somehow, this Elie Tahari dress is pulling it off.

This would be a great piece for a higher-level exec in an organization that skews a bit more casual. It’s polished, but not stuffy, and would look fabulous under a blazer.

I always love a snakeskin print (in fact, I have been wearing this one for almost four years now), so this python-inspired blouse with a twist from Boss is right up my alley. I like the idea of pairing this with coordinating burgundy bottoms for a monochromatic look.

If you’re feeling really bold, a full-on burgundy suit (jacket & pants) would look absolutely fantastic.

The blouse is $398 at Boss and comes in sizes 0–14.

I’m back at it with another recommendation for a work-appropriate T-shirt. This shirt from Boden has some cute frill detailing at the neck and sleeves to elevate it a bit.

I would wear it with a fun midi skirt on a casual Friday or layered underneath a sweater blazer for a more business casual look.

The top is $40 at Boden and comes in sizes 2–22.

I love a square neckline, and this top from Banana Republic looks perfect. I have a few pieces from the “Everywhere Ponte” line and have been really happy with the quality so far, so this might be the newest addition to my collection.

It comes in black and “iced vanilla,” either of which would be a great option for layering under blazers and sweaters for the office or pairing with your favorite denim for the weekend.

The top is $60 at Banana Republic and comes in sizes XXS–XXL.

An even more affordable option (that goes up to XXL) is from Ann Taylor; it’s $27.65 on sale and available in three colors.

This knit top from Banana Republic would be a fantastic layering piece if you like a scoop-neck top. Even on hot summer days, I prefer short sleeves to sleeveless tops under blazers for a couple of reasons: 1) if I take my blazer off, my shoulders are still covered, keeping me “office-appropriate” in even the most conservative offices, and 2) having an extra layer between my underarms and my blazer cuts down on my dry cleaning bills.

This top comes in four colors, perfect for wearing with your favorite summer suits and layering under chunky sweaters this fall.

The top is $54.97, marked down from $110, at Banana Republic. It comes in sizes XXS-XXL.
