  • 55-year-old rescued after snowmobile gets stuck in swamp

St. Louis County deputies rescued a 55-year-old man Thursday around 12:30 p.m., after his snowmobile got stuck in a swamp.

The sheriff’s office reports that the man was riding his snowmobile when it became stuck in a swamp about five miles northwest of Meadowlands, Minnesota, on Wednesday night. According to the sheriff’s office, the man was able to reach a remote cabin, where he spent the night.

The man was able to get in touch with a friend, indicating that he would walk to the road on Thursday morning. The man did not make it to the road in the timeframe he had told his friend, causing the friend to call 911.

Deputies found the man about two miles from the trailhead where he had started. Deputies say that he was wet and cold but was otherwise ok.

Deputies would like to remind the public that, despite the recent cold weather, swamps, lakes, and other bodies of water have not yet had time to freeze.

  • 2 teen boys rescued after falling through ice on Becker County lake

Multiple agencies responded to rescue two teenage boys who fell through the ice on a northern Minnesota lake Tuesday afternoon.

The Becker County Sheriff’s Office said its deputies and dive team joined Carsonville Fire and Rescue, the Detroit Lakes Fire Department, North Memorial Ambulance, Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to rescue the teens.

The boys, ages 13 and 14, fell into Straight Lake in Osage, Minnesota, around 2:50 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office. They were in a sled attempting to ice fish at the time. Neither boy was injured, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office said it advises “everyone to stay off all area lakes at this time.”

The brothers say they noticed the ice looked thin, which is why they used the sled instead of walking across and wore flotation devices. They said it’s important to share their story to keep others from endangering themselves.

“It’s important to me because I want other people to realize that they should just wait and how dangerous it is to be out on the ice this early and when it’s this thin, just not a smart idea,” Gabe Savage, one of the brothers, said.

The National Weather Service notes that ice is never completely safe, but a minimum of 4 inches is recommended for ice fishing and walking.

Osage is about 30 miles northeast of Detroit Lakes.

  • Alameda water rescue underway at Encinal Beach

Alameda water rescue underway at Encinal Beach

Alameda police and fire personnel are working with the U.S. Coast Guard Friday to find a person who went into the water at Encinal Beach.

Authorities said the call reporting a person in the water came in at 4:33 p.m.

Fire units arrived at Ballena Blvd. and Tidewater Ave. and located an individual in the water. Alameda police were also at the scene.

Fire crews immediately attempted a rescue, but the individual apparently went further into the water. Fire crews have put a dive team into the water to attempt to bring the individual ashore.

So far, they have been unsuccessful. Authorities say they are still looking for the individual and are going to use their Alameda Fire Department sub team in the search. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter is providing air support.

No word yet from authorities about what this person was doing out in the bay or how they got stranded in the water.
