  • White House blasts MS NOW correspondent’s ‘beyond sick’ reaction to DC shooting of National Guardsmen

    [ad_1]

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The White House is taking aim at MS NOW correspondent Ken Dilanian over his initial reaction to Wednesday’s shooting of National Guard troops in Washington D.C.

Dilanian appeared during the network’s breaking news coverage and was asked about the environment in D.C. since President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard earlier this year. He responded by noting how the National Guard’s presence has been normalized, and it was no longer seen as controversial after D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser embraced the deployment.

He then pivoted to the political climate around the country.

“Of course, you know, there’s so much controversy happening in the United States right now with ICE, who are also wearing uniforms and wearing masks,” Dilanian told MS NOW’s Katy Tur. “And so there’s — you don’t know — people walking around with uniforms in an American city. There are some Americans that might object to that. And so apparently this shooting has happened.”

Tur and Dilanian also questioned the legality of the National Guard deployment in D.C., citing a federal judge’s ruling that it was unlawful, which the Trump administration is appealing.

The White House’s rapid response team slammed Dilanian’s comments on social media

“@KDilanianMSNOW, two heroes were just shot protecting our nation’s capital — and this is your takeaway?” the White House wrote on X.

“Democrats have relentlessly demonized these Patriots, calling them ‘illegal’ and even suggesting THEY might start shooting Americans. Get help. You are beyond sick,” the White House added.

Other critics slammed the MS NOW correspondent.

“MS NOW is about to have to rebrand again. This is truly disgusting,” Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet reacted.

“How about blaming the murderer,” former ESPN reporter Ed Werder suggested.

“Ken Dilanian is a disgusting individual,” Red State writer Bonchie posted.

A spokesperson for MS NOW declined to comment.

  • 2 National Guard members in critical condition after ambush near White House

    [ad_1]

Two National Guard members were shot Wednesday afternoon near the White House. Officials provided conflicting reports on their conditions, but in the latest update shortly before 5 p.m., FBI Director Kash Patel said the victims are in critical condition.

The victims were ambushed, D.C.’s mayor and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said. A man turned a corner and fired at the guard members, MPD’s Executive Assistant Chief of Specialized Operations Jeffery Carroll said.

“This is a targeted shooting,” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said.

The victims were shot just before 2:30 p.m., right next to Farragut Square Park and two blocks north of the White House.

The scene at 17th and I streets NW has been secured and the suspect is in custody, MPD said on social media just before 3 p.m. Police believe there was only one suspect in the shooting.

Two National Guard members were shot Wednesday afternoon near the White House. Officials have provided conflicting reports on their conditions.

National Guard members from West Virginia, governor says

The two National Guard members who were shot are both from West Virginia, the state’s governor, Patrick Morrisey, said.

In a statement, Morrisey initially said the victims had died, but in an update minutes later, he said there were conflicting reports.

“It is with great sorrow that we can confirm both members of the West Virginia National Guard who were shot earlier today in Washington, DC have passed away from their injuries,” Morrisey said in a statement posted to social media about 3:42 p.m. “These brave West Virginians lost their lives in the service of their country. We are in ongoing contact with federal officials as the investigation continues.”

However, Morrisey posted again at 4:04 p.m., less than 25 minutes later: “We are now receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information. Our prayers are with these brave service members, their families, and the entire Guard community.”

Morrisey did not immediately say what agency or individuals were providing him information on the National Guard members’ conditions.

There were 180 members of the West Virginia National Guard on duty in D.C. as of Monday, the Joint Task Force said.

The FBI, the MPD and other authorities shared an update on a shooting near Farragut Square Park that critically injured two National Guard members.

    What happened?

The two National Guard members were shot in an exchange of gunfire with the suspect, a law enforcement source tells News4. No information was immediately shared about who opened fire or why.

Carroll said the crime appeared to involve a lone gunman.

The suspect came around a corner and immediately started firing at the National Guard members.

Other guard members in the area heard the gunfire and were able to intervene and hold the suspect after he had been shot within moments. Authorities are investigating who shot the suspect.

Officials didn’t provide any information on a possible motive. There was no information immediately available on the suspect’s name.

No one else was injured in the shooting.

News4’s Aimee Cho breaks down the crime statistics for the Farragut Square area.

One of the injured National Guard members was taken to a hospital via med-evac helicopter. The other guard member and the suspect were taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Two women who were in Franklin Square at the time said they didn’t hear gunshots, but knew something unusual had happened when they saw National Guard members running.

“We saw the National Guard specifically running toward this way and that’s why we were kind of shocked because I’ve never seen National Guards running unless it’s something serious,” said D.C. resident Nyla McGee.

“Especially, we saw undercover cars coming in and a helicopter at one point. That’s how I knew it was getting serious,” she said.

Another witness told reporters that she saw people in the area running while she was in her car.

“So then I look on the street. It’s so many people running opposite direction and it was little, little children, too, and they looked like school-aged children, maybe even as young as five,” the woman said. “So the individual who’s in charge of them, I just heard him say, ‘Go, go!’ and the kids … they’re on both sides of the street. And the kids are running. So then I heard, ‘Help, help!’ Someone yelled out ‘Help!’ twice. I didn’t know if it was the individual that was shot or was it someone yelling for help.”

    Reactions and responses

Neither President Donald Trump nor Vice President JD Vance were at the White House at the time of the shooting. Trump is at his home in Mar-a-Lago, while Vance is at Ft. Campbell, an army base on the Tennessee-Kentucky border.

Trump described the two Guard members as “critically wounded” in a social media post.

“The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price. God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!” he said in a Truth Social post.

Ward 2 D.C. Councilmember Brooke Pinto, whose jurisdiction includes Farragut Square Park, shared a statement to social media shortly after the shooting, which said: “Today’s shooting near the White House is devastating and unacceptable,” Pinto said. “As the Councilmember representing this area and the Chair of the Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety, I am deeply disturbed and saddened that there was a shooting injuring two National Guard troops.”

“These are public servants and they should not be harmed while doing their jobs,” the statement continued. “We must be more proactive as a country to get firearms off our streets. I am actively working to get to the bottom of what happened.”

    Effects of the shooting

The area near Farragut Square Park is shut down while law enforcement investigates.

Several law enforcement vehicles were at the scene moments after the shooting took place. News4 saw an ambulance and a Park Police vehicle, and NBC News cameras saw several MPD cars parked near Farragut Square Park.

Metro Transit Police said in a social media post that they are also assisting in the investigation, since the shooting happened close to the Farragut West station.

The east side entrance to the Farragut West station is closed during the investigation, Metro said. The west side (18th Street) entrance remains open.

The FBI is also assisting with the investigation, Patel said in a social media post.

The FAA put a brief ground stop in place at Ronald Regan Washington National Airport (DCA) at 3:20 p.m. for safety as helicopters flew over D.C. No planes took off from the airport amid heavy Thanksgiving travel until the ground stop ended at 4 p.m.

DCA shared a statement shortly after the ground stop was lifted.

“Passengers should check with their airline for schedule updates,” the airport said. “There may be delays related to a law enforcement incident in downtown Washington, D.C., earlier today. Flights have resumed, and the airport is open and operating normally.”

  • White House Defends Witkoff After Leak of Conversation With Russian Official

    [ad_1]

The White House is defending special envoy Steve Witkoff over a reportedly leaked conversation in which he told a Russian official that praising President Trump would help smooth over a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the war in Ukraine.

Witkoff also suggested that Putin call Trump ahead of a White House visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a conversation that gave the Kremlin an opportunity to press the case against giving Kyiv Tomahawk cruise missiles.

WASHINGTON—It started with an October order from President Trump to his national security team: Come up with a plan to end the Ukraine war just as they had halted the fighting in Gaza.

On a flight back from the Middle East, in the afterglow of brokering a deal between Israel and Hamas, envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner began writing the first draft of what would eventually become a 28-point peace framework to end the four-year war, according to U.S. officials and a person familiar with the situation.

European officials pushed back against a U.S. proposal for ending the Ukraine war, saying that Kyiv must approve any plan and that the conflict must not end with a Ukrainian capitulation.

The Trump administration drafted a 28-point peace plan that calls for Ukraine to make major territorial concessions to Russia and drops demands for a peacekeeping force to deter future attacks by Moscow, U.S. officials said, resurrecting ideas that Kyiv has already rejected.

Navy Yard Halloween melee prompts new curfew for youths

D.C. police said a total of 18 curfew violators were stopped by officers on the first night of Mayor Muriel Bowser’s limited juvenile curfew, which went into effect Saturday.

The curfew was implemented in response to an incident Halloween night where D.C. police, as well as Metro and Capitol Police, worked alongside the National Guard to disperse a large group of teens that had congregated in the Navy Yard neighborhood.

Five arrests were made, with charges ranging from possession of a knife to resisting arrest.

Special juvenile curfew zones have been established in Navy Yard, the U Street Corridor and along Union Station and the Banneker Recreation Center.

Anyone under 18 cannot be in the zones without an adult between the hours of 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. A citywide youth curfew then goes into effect at 11 p.m. and lasts until 6 a.m.

Under the mayor’s order, those curfews are set to take effect every night through Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. But, in recent weeks, Bowser has called on the D.C. Council to enact a permanent curfew.

On Saturday night, D.C. police said they stopped 14 juveniles who refused to leave one of the established curfew zones in the area of 14th and U Street, Northwest around 10:40 p.m.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser joins WTOP to discuss the youth curfew in effect through Wednesday, Nov. 5.

Early Saturday, at approximately 12:24 a.m., officers found two juveniles in violation of the citywide curfew in the 1100 block of New Jersey Avenue SE. Two more were found in the area of 9th and U Street NW, just before 3 a.m.

Police said youths who were engaged by officers generally complied and dispersed the zones when asked.

  • Federal judge blocks Trump order requiring citizenship proof on federal voter registration forms

    [ad_1]

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration cannot enforce an executive order requiring documented proof of U.S. citizenship on federal voter registration forms — a decision the administration defends as a lawful effort to protect election integrity.

U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly in Washington, D.C., on Friday found the requirement unconstitutional, writing that the president “lacks the authority to direct such changes.”

“The first question presented in these consolidated cases is whether the president, acting unilaterally, may direct changes to federal election procedures,” Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly wrote in her opinion. “Because our Constitution assigns responsibility for election regulation to the States and to Congress, this Court holds that the President lacks the authority to direct such changes.”

However, a spokesperson for the White House told Fox News Digital that Trump acted within his legal powers.

“President Trump has exercised his lawful authority to ensure only American citizens are casting ballots in American elections,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Abigail Jackson told Fox News Digital in an email. “This is so commonsense that only the Democrat Party would file a lawsuit against it.”

She added, “We expect to be vindicated by a higher court.”

The judge sided with the plaintiffs — including the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the Democratic National Committee and the League of Women Voters Education Fund — arguing that the Constitution “assigns no direct role to the president in either domain.”

The ruling says the U.S. Election Assistance Commission is permanently blocked from adding the requirement to the federal voter form, according to the Associated Press.

The lawsuit will continue as the judge examines other parts of Trump’s order, according to the Associated Press.

In March, President Trump signed an executive order mandating that anyone registering to vote provide government-issued proof of U.S. citizenship.

The order also directed the attorney general to enter into information-sharing agreements with state election officials to identify cases of election fraud or other election law violations and conditioned federal election-related funds on states complying with federal election integrity measures.

“There are other steps that we will be taking in the coming weeks,” Trump said just before signing the order. “We think we’ll be able to end up getting fair elections.”

Kollar-Kotelly had previously issued a preliminary injunction in April, and another federal judge blocked the same March 25 executive order in June following a separate challenge brought by Democratic state attorneys general, the Associated Press reported.

If you’re heading outdoors Friday night to take part in any Halloween events à la trick or treating, make sure to bundle up as windy and chilly conditions are in store across the D.C. region.

Friday’s high temperatures are expected to only get into the low 60s as wind gusts of up to 50 mph have the potential to make it feel a bit bone-chilling.

Wind advisories are expected to remain in effect for much of the day for residents in central Maryland and parts of Virginia west of the District, according to the National Weather Service.

While winds are expected to die down by sunset, around 6 p.m., the teeth-chattering conditions won’t necessarily be dying along with it.

“Temperatures will fall out of the 50s into the 40s tonight for the trick or treaters,” said 7New First Alert Senior Meteorologist Eileen Whelan.

So, stay safe, watch out for spooky skeletons and make sure to score some hot chocolate to keep those bones warm.

  • What are your rights while interacting with federal law enforcement? DC town hall offers insight – WTOP News

    [ad_1]

A Thursday night town hall in D.C. saw judges and attorneys offer insight on how residents should interact with federal law enforcement amid the surge in the District.

D.C. courtrooms have seen an influx of low-level offense and gun possession cases since the start of the federal law enforcement surge, several judges said during a community town hall on Thursday night.

The event, which featured a panel made up of judges and attorneys, also offered residents insight into what their rights are during interactions with federal law enforcement.

Milton Lee, chief judge of the D.C. Superior Court, said judicial vacancies are complicating matters. By January, there will be 15 vacancies on the Superior Court, Lee said.

Lee described a significant increase in “lower-level misdemeanor cases” — things such as fare evasion, unlawful possession or use of marijuana in public, possession of an open container of alcohol and gambling.

While the surge didn’t result in a significant change in the serious crime cases appearing in court, “we saw an influx of gun possession cases coming in. It was just the raw numbers that were significantly higher than before,” Lee said.

The boost in cases has meant arraignment court is running later than usual, and there’s a “significant increase” in new cases on misdemeanor and general felony calendars, Lee said, adding that the spike has also increased the caseload for defense attorneys.

Separately, the panelists offered tips for how to engage with federal law enforcement, after a Homeland Security officer fired into a car during a traffic stop earlier this month.

The incident, which happened on Benning Road in the District’s Northeast, came as officers said they tried to pull a car over for not displaying a front license plate. But the car fled, and once it was stopped, a Homeland Security officer fired multiple rounds into the car.

Phillip Brown was the driver but none of the bullets struck him. D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith denied allegations that officers tried to cover the incident up in their reports.

    Knowing your rights

“People are afraid to let their children walk to school alone,” advocate Russell Ellis, who also goes by the name “Jolly Good Ginger” online, said. “People are afraid to just be out and about like they normally do.”

If the public is witnessing a situation involving federal law enforcement escalating, Ellis recommended filming what’s happening.

“I make it a habit of, I film them, and I show what they’re doing, and I have found that to be very effective,” Ellis said. “They don’t want to be exposed for what they’re really doing, which is next to nothing.”

ACLU Attorney Michael Perloff said people don’t have to answer questions if they get stopped.

“You have a constitutional right to remain silent and refuse to answer questions,” Perloff said.

There’s an exception in D.C. law for pedestrian or traffic offenses, in which providing a name and address is required if asked, Perloff said, but otherwise, “the Constitution is very clear about your ability to refuse to answer.”

Noncitizens do have to carry paperwork and share it if an immigration official asks, Perloff said.

Federal Public Defender Alexis Gardner, meanwhile, said if stopped, the only question to ask is, “Am I free to go? Never answer, just return that question. And if they say yes, then calmly walk away. If they say no, well, then now you’re being detained.”

If arrested, Gardner said the only question that has to be answered is for a name.

“If you want to get the full benefit of these rights, you actually have to say, ‘I’m invoking my right to remain silent. I want to speak with a lawyer,’” Perloff said. “You need to use pretty much that exact language. There’s some really unfortunate court decisions where people have said things that are a little bit different.”

And if mistreated by a federal officer or agent, Perloff said the ability to seek compensation is limited. However, he said, the officer’s agency name is enough to file a claim.

Despite their circumstances, some furloughed government workers are single and ready to mingle. One local is helping them meet up.

Emily, the person behind “furlough-nely,” invited federal workers to meet at the kiosk cafe that sits in front of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum on the National Mall.

She has spent the last 11 years working for the federal government.

“It can be a very isolating time,” she said. “We’re used to being around people every day, and it just seemed like the right time to gather together.”

Emily, who loves puns, said she thought “furlough-nely” seemed like a nice pun that encompasses everything that’s going on right now.

The topics that started the meetup shouldn’t surprise anyone that works in the D.C. area.

“What we do, where we work, what our day to day looks like,” Emily said, describing some of the frequent conversation starters. “Also talked about local activities we like to do.”

One of those who joined the meetup was Mel Harper. This is Harper’s fourth shutdown as a federal employee, and she said it’s nice to be able to be with other federal workers who she can relate to.

“It’s a very specialized language. We use a lot of acronyms, and it’s like we’re getting together and like speaking our little code,” said Harper. “You can’t even really talk to your family and close friends a lot of times about this, because they get so worried about you.”

During the shutdown, Harper said she has been doing a lot of decluttering at home, and has not been on Netflix or Hulu. “Binging is what I do when I am working and I need to decompress,” she said.

While there were some at the meetup who did have a special person in their life, and just wanted to hang out with work friends, Harper made it clear why she was there.

“I am looking — heavy on the lonely,” Harper said with a laugh. “I’m open to a nice, nerdy federal man, maybe an IT bureaucrat who’s self aware? Yeah, I’m down for that.”

  • How One Ad Sent U.S.-Canada Trade Talks Into a Tailspin

    [ad_1]

Canadian officials were just starting to get their hopes up.

Negotiators from Ottawa and Washington had spent weeks hashing out a potential deal to reduce punishing 50% tariffs President Trump had imposed on steel and aluminum, and the Canadians were growing optimistic in recent days, according to people familiar with the talks. The discussions were punctuated by an amicable Oval Office meeting earlier this month between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Both leaders expressed confidence that they could get the trade relationship back on track.
