  • Walt Disney’s 2025 Worldwide Box Office Clicks Past $6.5B; Co-Chairman Alan Bergman Says “It Showcases The Strength Of Storytelling”

    UPDATED with latest figures: Disney, the No. 1-grossing motion picture studio of 2025, has just updated its year-end global box office number to $6.58 billion. Broken out for Disney, that’s $2.49 billion domestic and $4.08 billion international through Wednesday.

    As we previously mentioned, it’s the biggest box office year for Disney or any studio since 2019. Disney has been No. 1 at the global box office for nine of the past 10 years.

    An estimated 700 million people saw a Disney film in theaters this year. The studio from 2025 releases counts three billion-dollar grossing titles: Zootopia 2 (now the biggest ever for a Walt Disney Animation label title), Lilo & Stitch, and Avatar: Fire and Ash which is crossing the mark this week. 

    “This has been a fantastic year for our Studio as we’ll ultimately have three billion-dollar hits from three different studios, plus a number of other strong performers throughout the year,” said Alan Bergman, Co-Chairman, Disney Entertainment, in a statement. “It showcases the strength of storytelling across our creative teams and the great work of our marketing and distribution teams, along with everyone who helps make these successes possible. I’m thankful to our Studio team, and the amazing talent we’re fortunate to work with – as well as audiences all around the world.”

    Upcoming releases in 2026 include The Mandalorian and Grogu over Memorial Day weekend, May 22; Avengers: Doomsday on December 18; Toy Story 5 on June 19 and the original Pixar feature Hoppers on March 6; the live-action adaptation of Moana on July 10; Hexed from Disney Animation Studios on November 25; sequels The Devil Wears Prada 2 kicking off summer on May 1, and Searchlight’s Ready or Not 2: Here I Come on March 27; plus Send Help on January 30, The Dog Stars on August 28 and Whalefall on October 16.

    PREVIOUSLY, December 24: Disney Studios continues to show the power of the theatrical window as the Burbank, CA lot is officially crossing the $6 billion worldwide threshold today.

    Broken out that’s $2.3B domestic, the best for any major motion picture studio stateside YTD, and $3.65B in international B.O.

    We told you this was coming, but with the $450M+ and counting global success of James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, it happened a few days sooner.

    Disney is the first and only studio to cross $6B this year, the next best major is Warner Bros with $4.3B. 2025 repped Disney’s biggest year at the B.O. since 2019 when it hit an all-time $13.1B ($11.1B from Disney titles alone, the rest being 20th Century Studios and Searchlight). That was the first and only time a major motion picture studio crossed $10B at the worldwide B.O. Note, Warner Bros, crossed $4B first this year before any other motion picture studio.

    This is Disney’s fifth time clicking past $6B, the previous years being 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2016. 

    Disney’s flew to $6B this year off the heels of 16 wide releases including two $1 billion-plus grossing titles with Zootopia 2 ($1.3B to date) and Lilo & Stitch ($1.038 billion) — the only two MPA titles to cross that mark. There were also three Marvel Studios movies which combined topped $1.3B global: The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World. In addition there was Predator: Badlands which became the highest grossing in the 38-year old sci-fi thriller franchise with a near $184M as well as Freakier Friday ($153.1M). Not faring well, but contributing to the pot were Tron Ares ($142.2M), and Pixar’s Elio ($154.2M).

    Avatar: Fire and Ash collected $50.8M worldwide yesterday, $16.5M of that coming from North America. The running total of the Cameron, Amanda Silver, Rick Jaffa, Josh Friedman & Shane Salerno story by threequel is $119M domestic, with $331.1M overseas. China continues to lead all offshore results with $67M.

    As we reported previously, Fire and Ash repped the second biggest global opening for an MPA title this year with $347M after Disney’s own Zootopia 2 ($560.3M). The threequel also repped the second biggest global opening for Cameron after 2022’s Avatar: Way of Water at $441.7M (historically reported).

    When she wasn’t enjoying savory and sweet treats like the classic Dole Whip, the A Wrinkle In Time star raced to the future on TRON Lightcycle / Run presented by Enterprise at Magic Kingdom, vibed out on Kilimanjaro Safaris at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and rocked and rolled on Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT.

    After her latest visit, she listed some of her favorite dining spots, including Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ at Disney Springs (chicken) and Roundup Rodeo BBQ at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (BBQ) but it was Morimoto Asia at Disney Springs (sushi and ribs) that won her heart.

    “Morimoto (at Disney Springs) is my favorite. I’m a big sushi lover. Big Japanese food lover.

    The spare ribs are probably the best. Not probably. I know (they) are the best spare ribs I’ve ever had because they’re crispy on the outside and the sauce was so good and then it was so tender, like, fall off the bone. You don’t even have to do anything. I really enjoyed that. I want some more. My mouth is watering.”

    Attracting over 160,000 guests a day, Walt Disney World Resort reigns as the prime theme park destination, especially for friend groups who turned themed baddiecations into a viral trend on social media.

    On the heels of applications launching today for the 2025 Disney Dreamers Academy, one of the academy’s recent graduates – aspiring entrepreneur Te’Lario Watkins II of Ohio – experienced a dream come true moment as a result of his participation in the Walt Disney World Resort mentoring program.
     
    Watkins, 16, recently spent an afternoon on the set of ABC’s hit show ‘Shark Tank’ as the personal guest of investor Daymond John, who was inspired to supercharge Watkins’ entrepreneur dreams after interacting with him during the 2024 Disney Dreamers Academy at Walt Disney World Resort this spring.
     
    John, who was one of several celebrity mentors at the Disney event this year, was impressed by Watkins’ story of running his own mushroom farm, Tiger Mushroom Farms, since he was seven years old and starting his own non-profit, Garden Club Project, to address food insecurity in his community.
     
    Walt Disney World arranged to fly Watkins and his father from their home in Blacklick, Ohio to Los Angeles, California where John gave Watkins an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of the show’s set, connected him with other entrepreneurs and introduced him to the show’s other “Sharks.’’ The highlight for Watkins was having the opportunity to learn business strategies from John, gain entrepreneurial insights, and acquire general life lessons. These experiences helped John become one of his generation’s most well-known, self-made millionaires—and Disney Dreamers Academy gave him yet another opportunity to share them forward.
     
    “Being able to meet Daymond John again was super exciting to me,” said Watkins. “I wouldn’t be here without going to DDA. To high school students: applying to DDA would be one of the greatest decisions you’ve ever made in your life.”
     
    Disney announced earlier today during the ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans, Louisiana, that applications are now open for the 2025 event at www.DisneyDreamersAcademy.com, where high school students looking to achieve their dreams can be nominated or apply themselves.
     
    Disney Dreamers Academy is an annual four-day transformational program at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, designed to broaden career and personal development for a select group of 100 teens from Black and underrepresented communities across America. The 100 selected students will receive an all-expense-paid trip, along with one parent or guardian, to Walt Disney World Resort to experience a combination of inspiration, education and fun at The Most Magical Place on Earth. 
     
    Students attend in-depth workshops in a variety of disciplines aligned with their dreams. These workshops introduce the Disney Dreamers to diverse career paths within business, entertainment, and sciences, including career opportunities within The Walt Disney Company.
     
    Watkins was just one of several teens from this year’s Disney mentoring program who had an experience-of-a-lifetime following their involvement in the event. Elijah Moore of Norfolk, VA., an aspiring producer and musician, was flown to Los Angeles where he received a special tour of Dolby Studios and Walt Disney Studios to name a few. And Orlando Ecung of Los Angeles, who dreams of being a business executive, attended the world premiere of the movie “Inside Out 2” as a special guest of Walt Disney Studios.  
     
    Over the years, Disney Dreamers Academy has inspired more than 1,700 students from across the country. Graduates have gone on to become doctors, engineers, performing artists, entrepreneurs, Disney Cast Members and more. Some have transitioned into mentors to the Disney Dreamers who followed them.
     
    Disney Dreamers Academy is an important part of Disney’s commitment to supporting diverse communities by encouraging the next generation to think big and use what they learn in their relentless pursuit of their dreams to help make a difference in the lives of others.

    Securing physical copies of a number of Disney classics is about to get a lot harder. Disney has announced today that after 23 years of service, it will be shuttering the Disney Movie Club later this year. Disney Movie Club is a subscription service for diehard fans that, since 2001, has provided an avenue for them to secure DVDs and Blu-rays of countless pieces of Disney media. Members would receive monthly releases, but the real boon of the service was the Disney Movie Club’s deep cuts, which were often mostly-forgotten classics that are otherwise very difficult to get a hold of.

    A statement from the company reads, “After 23 magical years, it’s time to say goodbye. After serving over 10 million valued Club Members, we have made the difficult decision to close the Disney Movie Club. We will miss the opportunity to be part of the lives of so many Disney fans, including you, but we will be forever grateful for the time you’ve chosen to spend with us.”

    Disney’s move to close the Disney Movie Club comes on the heels of a new deal the company has struck with Sony, which will see the latter taking over the production of physical media on behalf of the former. The deal, first reported by The Digital Bits, does not clarify whether or not Sony will offer its own similar service in light of Disney Movie Club being closed down.

    Physical media has been trending downward for a long time thanks to the emergence of digital releases and the advent of streaming services, making a move like this all but an inevitability. Disney launched its own streaming service, Disney+, in late November of 2019, and the service has largely been touted as an incarnation of the promise the Disney Movie Club once held. But you don’t own the films and TV shows on Disney+; they can be taken off the service at any time. And despite its status as Disney’s digital vault, Disney+ is still missing a number of titles that are currently only available in a physical capacity through the Disney Movie Club. The shuttering of the service in a few months, paired with these titles’ absence on Disney’s preeminent service, has many wondering what’ll happen to the precious titles that haven’t been brought over and have no other physical releases available.

    The announcement of Disney Movie Club’s shuttering notes that the service will be retired in July of this year, but current members will have until May 20 to place any remaining orders. If you’re a collector of vintage Disney movies and shows, or even just an advocate for the proliferation of physical media and ownership of it, it’s best to act fast.

    Disney is making its biggest push yet into video games. On February 7, the Mouse House and Fortnite creator Epic Games announced plans to create new games and an entertainment universe where consumers can “play, watch, shop and engage with content, characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and more,” company representatives said in a press release.

    “Our exciting new relationship with Epic Games will bring together Disney’s beloved brands and franchises with the hugely popular Fortnite in a transformational new games and entertainment universe,” said Disney CEO Robert Iger. “This marks Disney’s biggest entry ever into the world of games and offers significant opportunities for growth and expansion. We can’t wait for fans to experience the Disney stories and worlds they love in groundbreaking new ways.”

    “Disney was one of the first companies to believe in the potential of bringing their worlds together with ours in Fortnite, and they use Unreal Engine across their portfolio,” said Epic CEO Tim Sweeney. “Now we’re collaborating on something entirely new to build a persistent, open and interoperable ecosystem that will bring together the Disney and Fortnite communities.”

    This isn’t the first time Disney and Epic have collaborated. Fortnite has hosted several Star Wars-themed events over the years, including last year’s Find the Force event honoring the Prequel Trilogy. Back in 2020, Fortnite’s Nexus War with Galactus event based in the Marvel universe drew more than 15.3 million concurrent players, according to the press release announcing the deal.

    While it’s tempting to think of Disney as primarily a producer of movies, TV, and Baby Yoda merch, it’s had a finger in the gaming pie for some time. This little nugget from the press release surprised me a little. “Licensed games from Disney garnered more than 150 award nominations, wins and other accolades in 2023, including multiple Game of the Year nominations for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Disney mobile games have 1.5 billion global installs, and to date, nine Disney games franchises have each grossed more than $1 billion in sales.” Who knew?

    Anyway, congratulations to both these desperately cash-strapped companies who so sorely needed a chance to make more money.
