    Lent is a 40 day season commonly practiced by giving up something beloved (drinking, chocolate, social media) as a sign of faith and sacrifice. This cocktail was created by at the 5 Point Cafe in Seattle, Washington.  Mixologist Sean Dunlap wanted something festive, fun and smooth. Regular patron Dan Luczkiewicz said the only thing wrong with this drink it is delicious and you want another!  Cafe owner David Meinert agrees and it will be featured at the famed dive bar during the holiday.

    Ingredients

    • 2 oz tequila perhaps a blanco
    • 4 oz pineapple juice
    • Splash of cranberry

    Create

    • Add add to a highball glass
    • Pour in tequila and pineapple juice
    • And a splash of cranberry juice for color
    • Stir and enjoy!

    The Peep-a-lious

    Peeps are iconic to Easter since the Just Born company premiered the colorful confection in the 1950s.  Why not combine a classic with vodka and make it even more enjoyable.  Consider reviving a childhood tradition but instead of dying eggs, you color champagne.

    • Granulated sugar
    • Unsweetened cocoa powder
    • Milk
    • Vanilla extract
    • 1-1.5 oz. of Baileys, Frangelico, Grand Marnier, KahluaWhiskey
    • 1 big marshmallow

    • Whisk the sugar and cocoa powder together in a small saucepan
    • Add the milk and whisk the mixture over medium-low to medium heat until the sugar and cocoa are dissolved and the hot chocolate is heated through

    The Aperol Spritz has been the fun drink of brunches, happy hours and those longing for the Riveria or Italian countryside.  Beautiful, tasty and full of fizz, it is the epitome of la dolce vita.  But what about giving it a spring twist by adding Blood Orange.  March/April is the tail end of their season and they should be rich in flavor.

    Ingredients

    • 1/2 cup (4 oz.) Prosecco
    • 1/4 cup (2 oz.) Aperol
    • 1/2 cup fresh blood orange juice (about 3 oranges)

    Create

    • Stir together Prosecco and Aperol
    • Pour over ice with blood orange juice in a tall glass
    • Garnish if desired

    Sweet Tea Julep

    Perfect for a brunch and day drinking, the Sweet Tea Julep is intoxicating and uplifting. The extra lemon gives it a hint of tartness.  This makes enough to share or to have a nice long morning.

    Ingredients

    • 6 cups water
    • 2 tablespoons lemon
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 6 mint herbal tea bags
    • 1 ½ cups (12-oz.) bourbon
    • 1 sliced lemon
    • Crushed ice

    Create

    • Combine water, lemon juice (more if needed), and sugar in a medium saucepan over high, stirring occasionally, until sugar is dissolved and mixture begins to boil, about 3 minutes
    • Remove from heat. Add mint herbal tea bags. Steep until cooled to room temperature, about 1 hour
    • Strain into a pitcher, and stir in bourbon and lemon slices
    • Serve over crushed ice, and garnish with lemon

    Hibiscus Martini

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup water
    • 2 tablespoons of hibiscus tea or 1-2 hibiscus tea bags
    • 1 cup superfine sugar (not powdered)
    • 2 ounces vodka
    • 1/2 ounce orange-flavored liqueur
    • 1-ounce lime juice (fresh squeezed is best)
    • 3/4 ounce hibiscus syrup
    • Garnish: twisted lime peel, edible orchid, hibiscus, or other flowers

    Create

    • Bring 1 cup of water to a boil
    • Add hibiscus tea, steep for 10 minutes
    • Take the teabag out and add 1 cup of superfine (not powdered) sugar
    • Stir until all the sugar dissolves, refrigerate until needed
    • Pour vodka and other ingredients into a mixing glass
    • Add ice and shake vigorously for 7 to 8 seconds
    • Strain into a chilled martini glass
    • Garnish with a hibiscus flower or edible orchid

    Daiquiri

    Made famous by Hemingway, the Daiquiri is frozen fun choice of summer time drinks!  It was either invented in 1902 by an American mining engineer named Jennings CoxWilliam A. Chanler in Cuba or a US congressman who purchased the Cuban iron mines and introduced it to New York.

    • 4 ounces white rum
    • 2 ounces lime juice, freshly squeezed
    • 2 ounces simple syrup
    • Garnish: 2 lime wheels

    Create

    1. Add all ingredients into a blender with a cup and a half of ice.

    2. Pulse until mixed.

    3. Divide between two glasses and garnish each with a lime wheel.

    Tequila Sunrise

    Created by Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice in the early 1970s while  working as young bartenders in Sausalito. They served the drink to The Rolling Stones’s Mick Jagger at the start of their 1972 American.  Jagger had one, loved, and he and the band order them throughout the tour.  He even dubbing the tour the “cocaine and tequila sunrise tour”.

    • 2 ounces blanco tequila
    • 4 ounces orange juice, freshly squeezed
    • 1/4 ounce grenadine
    • Garnish: orange slice
    • Garnish: cherry

    Create

    1. Add the tequila and then the orange juice to a chilled tall highball glass filled with ice.

    2. Top with the grenadine, which will sink to the bottom of the glass, creating a layered effect.

    3. Garnish with an orange slice and a cherry.

    Barracuda

    Developed in the late 50s by the bartender Benito Cuppari while he was working SS Michelangelo cruise ship, it is named after the Barracuda Beach Club in Portico.  It was initially served in a pineapple shell.

    Ingredients

    • ⅔ Part Galliano
    • ⅓ Part Grenadine
    • ⅔ Part Light Rum
    • ⅓ Part Lime Juice
    • ⅔ Part Pineapple Juice
    • Champagne

    Create

    • Fill a chilled highball glass with ice cubes.
    • Add galliano, grenadine, light rum, lime juice and pineapple juice.
    • Top up with champagne.

    OR

    • Shake Galliano, grenadine, light rum, lime juice and pineapple juice well.
    • Pour in a champagne coupe.
    • Top with champagne

    No pancetta? Use some made-from-scratch meatballs or use cheese or sausage-filled tortellini, if you like. Add veggies like spinach, chopped kale, sliced mushrooms, or peas.

    How to Make Vodka Sauce

    This Vodka sauce recipe is a classic sauce that’s super easy to make.

    1. Cook onion in butter or olive oil until softened. Add pancetta and cook until some of the fat is rendered out.
    2. Add vodka and garlic and cook per recipe below.
    3. Stir in the remaining ingredients and simmer until thickened.
    4. Remove from heat and stir in parmesan cheese and parsley.

    Tips for the Perfect Pasta Sauce

    • Boil pasta until just al dente and save a little pasta water to add to the sauce. This provides more texture to the sauce and helps it cling to the pasta.
    • For an extra smooth sauce without chunky bits of tomato, puree the sauce in a small blender before adding cheese in Step 6.

    Easy Vodka Sauce

    A creamy and tomato-based pasta sauce with a touch of vodka adds a unique richness and depth to the flavor.

    Prep Time 20 minutes

    Cook Time 55 minutes

    Total Time 1 hour 15 minutes

    • Using your hands, squish the tomatoes into a bowl to break them up (reserving the juices) and set aside.

    • In a medium saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, 3 minutes. Stir in the pancetta or bacon and continue cooking until some of the fat has rendered out, about 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook just until fragrant.

    • Add the vodka and bring to a low boil, let boil uncovered for 2 minutes.

    • Stir in the whole and crushed tomatoes (with any juices) and the pepper flakes. Simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.

    • Stir in the cream and simmer for an additional 9 to 11 minutes or until thickened.

    • Remove from heat, and add the parmesan cheese and parsley. Stir, taste, and season with salt and pepper.

    This is enough sauce to toss with 16 oz dry pasta.
    No vodka? No problem! Use a splash of white wine instead (although it won’t technically be vodka sauce anymore). If you’d like to make this recipe without alcohol, leave the vodka out. It will change the flavor but it will still be delicious.
    San Marzano tomatoes are preferred if you can get them. Break up whole tomatoes by hand before using or with the back of a wooden spoon in the pan.
    Add grilled shrimp, shredded chicken, or Italian sausage if desired.
    Save some pasta water, if you mix the sauce with pasta, add a bit of reserved pasta water. Not only does it help with consistency, but the starches also help the sauce cling better.

    It was a great holiday season for lots of fan of marijuana – and only a few Grinches in sight!

    The holiday season was great for the cannabis industry. In 2023, Delaware, Ohio, and Minnesota passed recreational marijuana. More than half of U.S. population lives in places where marijuana is legal for recreational use with even more having access to medical marijuana.  The holidays are a time of indulgence and spending. Consumers defied expectations for spending in December. Retail sales rose 0.6% in December from November, which was more than analysts expected. The holiday sales confirm marijuana is mainstream by the way the public spent on products.

    And in a major culture shift, Gen Z is moving away from alcohol and moving softly toward marijuana. Young adults not in college were even more likely to avoid alcohol. Nearly 30% of this group in 2018 reported that they did not drink beer, wine or spirits. The number was about 24% in 2002.

    Decreases in alcohol consumption by Gen Z coincide with an uptick in cannabis use, according to numerous reports. Is this a one-for-one trade in substances? Some signs point that way

    According to BDSA, a leading national data analyst company which covers cannabis, it was an important marijuana sales year.  Already, the day before Thanksgiving is a banner year  Comparing same 7 holiday days of 2022 to 2023 and they saw an average of a 19% increase year over year. The day before Turkey Day is known as Green Wednesday in the cannabis industry.  It is also a large alcohol sales day and is known as Blackout Wednesday or Drinksgiving. But alcohol sales only saw 3.8% rise.

    Christmas is historically a significant holiday for the legal cannabis industry, with the days leading up to Christmas bringing a sizable boost to legal sales. In 2022, the day before Christmas eve (12/23/22) saw the second highest daily sales total of any day that month, with daily sales totaling +38% higher than the daily sales average for December 2022.” shared BDSA.

    Edibles saw an even greater boost on the week before Christmas 2023. BDSA reports edible sales on the week before Christmas were +23% higher than the average weekly edible sales total for the month.  This is makes sense as gummies are the #1 way people consumer – almost 49% of users say the use have a gummy.

    States which started their program (except for NY) did especially well. Marijuana retailers in Michigan sold a whopping $3.06 billion in adult-use and medical products in 2023. There are few Grinches, the Governors of Iowa, Florida and New Hampshire are working hard to block sales and Senator Mitch McConnell is still working to block any national marijuana legalization.  And all eyes are on the DEA to see what they are going to do about rescheduling.

    Margarita 

    This sweet, citrusy frozen cocktail is a classic good times go-to drink that’s refreshing, sweet and leisurely. Likewise, a fragrant, citrusy preroll is easy to pick up and enjoyed at a relaxed pace.

    On a Sunday you want something easy, sip worthy and doesn’t pack to strong of a punch.  Also, in case you have friends and family around, you want something where the ingredient are handy.  The first one is a bit more complicated, but turmeric is good to help you start some body recovery after a period of feasting. Its most active compound, curcumin, have many scientifically proven health benefits. For Sundays, it is a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

    • 1 1/2 ounces tequila
    • 1 1/2 ounces grapefruit juice
    • 1 ounce cinnamon syrup
    • 1/4 ounce turmeric tea*
    • Club soda water, to top
    • Garnish: grapefruit twist

    Create

    1. Add all ingredients into a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled

    2. Strain into a highball glass over fresh ice.

    3. Top with the soda water.

    4. Garnish with a grapefruit twist

    *Turmeric tea: Add 1 teaspoon ground turmeric powder and 2 cups water to a medium pan, and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes, then strain.

    The Greyhound

    • 1 1/2 ounces vodka or gin
    • Grapefruit juice, freshly squeezed, to top
    • Garnish: lime wheel

    Create

    1. Fill a rocks glass with ice, then add the vodka or gin and the grapefruit juice and stir gently.

    2. Garnish with a lime.

    • 1 1/4 ounces bourbon (or rye)
    • 1 ounce Campari
    • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
    • Garnish: orange twist

    The day before and after Thanksgiving are known for being HUGE drinking holidays. In fact the Wednesday before turkey day is known as Drinksgiving or Blackout Wednesday.  After Friday comes the holiday season with parties, brunches, and happy hours, and maybe drinks with dinner, all leading to at least one hangover.

    Alcohol triggers an inflammatory response from the immune system. In turn, the immune system may trigger certain agents that commonly produce physical symptoms including a headache, inability to concentrate, memory problems and nausea. Not a pretty picture, but here are the best ways to recover from a hangover.

    There are two tracks to recover from a hangover – before and after.  Assuming you are going to drink heavily, you have to remember two things.  Drink plenty of fluids like water while imbibing to avoid dehydration. Next take a pain reliever — but not Tylenol. Aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, other brands), and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

    Also, avoid dark colored alcohol. Data has indicted  clear liquors, such as vodka and gin, tend to cause hangovers less frequently than dark ones like whiskey, red wine, and tequila. The main form of alcohol in alcoholic beverages is ethanol, but the darker liquors contain chemically related compounds (congeners), including methanol. The same enzymes process ethanol and methanol, but methanol metabolites are especially toxic, so they may cause a worse hangover.

    But, if you still wake up with a hangover, there is a hope and here are potential cures.

    People forget to eat when they drink, lowering their blood sugar. Toast and juice is a way to gently nudge levels back to normal. This should be followed by a a big brunch or brunch.

    Consider a gummy. A dose like 10mg will not only get you out of the painful headspace, it will begin to work on your inflammation as you get a body high. Use something non-aggressive like tincture (glycerin), a hard candy, or a beverage. Anything baked or food-like may just be overwhelming taste wise.

    Enjoy soda, coffee or tea. Caffeine may not have any special anti-hangover powers, but as a stimulant, it could help with the grogginess. Try it and go back to bed and sleep for a bit.

    Pop some vitamin B or Zinc. A study published in The Journal of Clinical Medicine evaluated the diets for 24 hours before and after excessive drinking occurred. It was a small study and results were based on the participants saying what they ate. However, they did find that people whose food and beverage consumption contained greater amounts of zinc and B vitamins had less severe hangovers.

    Since the hangover is at it’s most painful as the last of the alcohol is leaving your system, you could consider the age old cure of “hair of the dog” and have a Bloody Mary.

    Pepper Collins

    1 oz Nemiroff Honey Pepper Vodka

    ½ oz Pineapple syrup

    2/3 oz Fresh Lemon Juice

    Prosecco

    Fill shaker with ice. Add Nemiroff Honey Pepper, lemon juice and pineapple juice into a separate mixing cup. Shake with ice for 10 seconds. Strain into chilled champagne flue with prosecco.

    KYIV Mule

    2 oz Nemiroff Honey Pepper Vodka

    ½ oz Fresh Lime Juice

    1/3 oz Simple Syrup

    Ginger Ale

    Fill a chilled copper glass with ice. Add ingredients into copper glass. Mix using swizzle stick. Top with ginger ale and mix again with swizzle stick. Cover with crushed ice and serve with a straw. Garnish with lime.

    Classic Martini 

    2 1/2 oz Nemiroff Vodka

    1/2 oz dry vermouth

    Green Olive for garnish

    Cracked Ice

    In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine vodka and vermouth. Stir well, about 20 seconds, then strain into martini glass. Garnish with an olive and serve.
