  • Safe States and Partners Celebrate National Injury Prevention Day Nov. 18

Unified to Prevent Injuries and Violence

For the fifth year, on November 18, buildings, bridges, monuments, and homes across the country will shine green to recognize the importance of preventing injuries and violence, the number one killer of people 1-44 years. The color green is often associated with safety, growth, and prosperity – all things we want for our communities. Safe States and the nation’s top prevention advocates, unified in our common vision of safe, healthy communities that prioritize all people, no matter who they are, where they live, work, travel, and play, have joined forces to celebrate and recognize National Injury Prevention Day (NIPD).

NIPD is a day dedicated to working collectively to reduce the burden and instances of injuries and violence plaguing communities. Preventing injuries and violence is possible by creating environments where it’s less likely to happen. This is done by improving systems and conditions in the community through research-based policies and programs while empowering individuals with knowledge and tools to make the safe choice the easy choice. Safe States joins the Injury Free Coalition for Kids®, and other leading organizations, including Safe Kids Worldwide, American Trauma Society, American Academy of Pediatrics, Be SMART – program of Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, the Society for Advancement of Violence and Injury Research, Trauma Center Association of America, Juvenile Products Manufacturing Association, National Drowning Prevention Alliance, Gun Owners for Safety – Giffords, and Columbia Center for Injury Science and Prevention, to empower and equip communities to make a difference. The full list of supporting organizations is here.

Barbara Barlow, MD, Professor Emerita of Surgery in Epidemiology at Columbia and Founding Director of the Injury Free Coalition for Kids®, firmly believes that “it takes a whole community working together to create a community safe for children and families.” She is thrilled with the continued growth and success of NIPD, which reaches far beyond a single day.

    NIPD activities begin November 12.

The country’s top IVP organizations will address the need and promise of prevention with a “Unifying Voices” webinar at 1:00 p.m. EST. Featured presenters include Dr. Allison Arwady, CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control; Dr. Lois Lee, Boston Children’s Hospital; Dr. David Schwebel, University of Alabama Birmingham; and Dr. Sadiqa Kendi, Children’s National Hospital. Register here.

On November 18 at 1:00 p.m. EST, join the live conversation on Twitter/X with hashtag #BeInjuryFree. That evening, buildings in cities across America will shine green to highlight the burden of injuries and the need for prevention. Throughout the weekend, IVP professionals will lead activities and distribute tools to create safer communities. Learn more https://www.injuryfree.org/nationalinjurypreventionday/2024

“It has been exciting to see the growth of support for NIPD, now including a cross-section of some of the leading public health organizations in the country. United, we can reduce the incidence of injuries and violence,” Safe States Executive Director, Richard Hamburg adds.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WLS) — A stabbing spree in Rockford, Illinois, resulted in the death of at least four individuals on Wednesday, according to local police.

The initial reports reached Rockford police around 1:14 p.m., originating from the 2300-block of Holmes Street.

Police, paramedics, and deputies from the sheriff’s office quickly covered several residential blocks nearby, responding to various incidents that are believed to be linked across Rockford and Winnebago County.

Authorities reported that within Rockford’s city limits, four individuals lost their lives, one is in critical condition, and four suffered serious injuries, not all due to stabbing. Additionally, in Winnebago County, just outside Rockford, two more people were injured, making a total of seven injured victims and 11 people involved in the incident.

The deceased include a 15-year-old girl, a 63-year-old woman, a 49-year-old man, and a 22-year-old man, as per police reports.

A letter carrier from the U.S. Postal Service was among those killed, confirmed by U.S. Postal investigators, though further details about him were not disclosed.

“The Postal Inspection Service confirms that a victim of today’s incident in Rockford, IL, was a USPS letter carrier,” said a USPIS spokesperson. “As this investigation is ongoing, we cannot provide more details at this time. Postal inspectors are working alongside Rockford Police Department and other first responders.”

The Rockford Fire Department noted that one victim, initially in critical condition, did not survive after being taken to the hospital.

A 22-year-old male suspect was apprehended in the vicinity around 1:35 p.m., according to police.

After the stabbings in Rockford, police provided updates on the four fatalities and five injuries. Near Florence Avenue and Eggleston Road, a home invasion was reported by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Gary Caruana mentioned a young woman managed to escape the home invasion but was attacked by the suspect, suffering stab wounds to her hands and face, and is now in serious condition at the hospital.

Caruana added that a passerby who attempted to aid the woman was also stabbed by the suspect but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

A deputy from the sheriff’s department apprehended the suspect. According to Rockford police, the suspect is currently being questioned, and charges are pending.

Authorities believe there are no additional suspects involved in the incident. Federal agencies are also supporting the ongoing investigation.

There is currently no known motive for the attack.

Rockford police urge anyone with further information or video evidence to contact them at 815-966-2900 or submit anonymous tips at 815-963-7867.

Counseling services for those affected by the attack will be offered by the city, available Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Flinn Middle School, located at 2525 Ohio Parkway.

A statement from Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara addressed the violence:

“Today’s appalling act of violence against innocent community members has left us in shock. With the suspect now detained, our focus shifts to supporting those directly affected by this tragedy through their healing process. In collaboration with community partners, we aim to swiftly provide support and services. Further details will be shared shortly. As we navigate through multiple crime scenes across different jurisdictions, our goal is to understand the events that occurred in order to prevent future incidents. Updates will follow.”

Chicago radically expanding anti-violence program to 6 more neighborhoods

    [ad_1]

CHICAGO (WLS) — Elected, civic and business leaders announced plans to dramatically expand an anti-violence program in the city of Chicago.

The ambitious program takes what is already in place in one community and expand it into seven other neighborhoods where people are most at risk of shooting or being shot.

In the past week, the city has already seen the murder of two students outside Innovation High School last Friday and then a triple shooting outside Senn High School Wednesday night that killed one teen and wounded two more.

Thursday community and elected leaders announced a $400 million public-private partnership to expand violence intervention efforts.

“No other city in America has put together this kind of broad public-private partnership to achieve such a transformative reduction in gun violence,” said Vaughn Bryant, executive director of Metropolitan Peace Initiatives.

Officials noted Chicago has seen a 31% drop in shootings over the past two years, but the two recent shootings near schools have been a sobering reality check.

“We should celebrate the progress, we should celebrate the momentum, but everybody here knows how far we have to go,” said Arne Duncan, founder of CRED Chicago. “To live with that level of fear and trauma and heartbreak is unacceptable.”

Community violence intervention groups currently work together to tamp down shootings in North Lawndale. The new initiative would expand that effort in the coming weeks to include six more neighborhoods on the West and South Sides.

Those on the ground hope the expansion will help them better reach people prone to violence.

“Because even if they’re not listening, like you knowing them personally and being around them all their life, like even if you don’t hit them right, then and there, it’s going to sit on their mind they’re gonna think about it down the line,” said Jacques Green, Humboldt Park violence interrupter.

But despite the recent shootings near schools, Mayor Brandon Johnson is not backing down on his plan to remove all police officers from CPS schools. He said his focus will be on having officers outside schools during arrival and dismissal.

“We’re not going to allow these individuals who are taking their anguish and pain out on the rest of the community. We’re not going to allow them to terrorize our communities and force us to live in fear,” the mayor said.

Police Superintendent Larry Snelling also pledged support and partnerships with violence intervention groups. Business and philanthropic group shave raised $65 million of the promised $100 million for the campaign.
